Synching Address Book with Apple Mail contacts

I have recently cleaned out and reorganized Address Book. I deleted dead people, replaced old email addresses, phone numbers etc. But the contact list that comes up when I click the Address icon after New Message is clicked is not the same email list as Address Book (though its icon is).
How can I synch the two? There is no pull-down "synch with Address Book" command.
Grateful for any help

I looked and found Previous Recipients under Window (never noticed it before). But that is manually repeating what I have just done with Address Book. That took two days. I'm looking for a way to sync the two with one click

  • Synching Address Book with Google Contacts

I currently use Google Sync to keep Google Contacts and Google Calendar synched to my iPhone and it works perfectly. I want to also sync Google Contacts to my Apple Address book, and while I know where to configure this, I have a question before I turn it on.
In Address Book preferences if I check the box to sync Address Book with Google contacts is this going to wipe out my Google Contacts? Or will there be an opportunity to select which way I want the sync to occur? I want my Address Book to be the target in all cases and my Google Contacts to be the default master. I do not use Apple Mail, iCal, or Address Book on my Mac...I use Google Apps for everything, but I would like to keep my Mac Address Book as a carbon copy of my Google Contacts.
Thanks for any help before I start this sync.

I have had a similar problem. I can't find "contacts cleaner" in versiontracker. Is this an iphone app?

  • I get an error trying to use Apple Address Book with Word Mail merge - says it cannot open data file?

I am running MS Word 2011, latest Mac OS, and trying to use the Mail Merge option with the Apple Address Book as the data source.
However whenever I select the Apple Address Book as the data source, I get the error "Word was unable to open the data source".
    Anybody got any idea why?
    Thanks for your help

I am guessing you could have solved this little problem already but perhaps someone else may benefit:
I struggled with the same problem - not being able to use Mac Address Book (i.e. Contacts) with Word 2013 for mac mail-merge (on Mountain Lion and, now, on Mavericks) - with the exact same error message reported by Klausngigtoas above .
So I read lots of techie stuff on forums which passed a nice few hours but didn't help. Finally, with slumped, defeated expression, I gave up.
But I just now (such is life) I accidentally stumbled upon the simple solution:
    1. Enter System Preferences and click Security & Privacy.
    2. Select the Privacy tab and then on Contacts on the left hand panel.
    3. In the right hand panel ("Allow the apps below to access your contacts") just tick the Contacts box.
    4. And Voilà! - at least it worked for me - hope it does for you.

  • Sharing Address Book with e-mail only accounts

    Hello:
I have created two email only account and would like to share the primary address book with these accounts. I have added these accounts in sharing folders and sent the invite.
The main functionality I am looking for is access my contact information via the .mac interface with the email only accounts. I have created the new emails accounts based on the fact Tiger was going to allow the contacts to be shared across multiple accounts.
    Can anyone help??

Address Book sharing uses the iDisk to store the contact data. So I am fairly certain that this feature doesn't work with email-only accounts.

  • Sync Address Book with Google Mail

Since the update to Mac OS X 10.5.3 I expected to sync my Address Book with my Gmail account. But no can do, and I don't know why. Is it just for iPhone users?

There are several ways to do this, but it all depends on whether you prefer a simple solution versus a more technically involved solution. If you're like most non-technical people, I'll assume you prefer the simple solution, so you should check these out and decide which of them you want to use:
Soocial: [www.soocial.com] (currently in closed beta)
    Syncman: [wateree.net]
    GooSync: [www.goosync.com]
    ABGMerge: [homepage.mac.com]
    Spanning Sync: [blog.spanningsync.com]

Or, if you want to go with the technical method that involves no money, just skill and patience, read this article: <http://www.zaphu.com/2008/05/29/how-to-enable-mac-address-book-syncing-with-go ogles-gmail-contacts-without-an-iphone-or-mac/>

  • Problem with Groups from Address Book in Apple Mail

I have set up a group in my address book. When I use Apple Mail I use this group to send specific messages to. But for some reason I keep getting error messages saying that my outgoing sever encountered a problem with the messgae. It only happens when I send messages with a group, not if I send messages to single recipients. The group consists of 90 emails, so I can't enter their emails each time I want to send a message to the group.
    Thanks in advance,
    Regards

I am having a similar problem. All the addresses are correct, and I know this because I use them all the time with no errors. BUT when bundled into a group - actually any group I set up I cannot send successfully. I have two groups in my mail program and neither will work.

  • Synching Address Book with Gmail

According to the instructions I've found I should be able to sync my Address Book (v4.1.1 - updates say this is current) with Gmail address book. But when I go to Preferences>General I only get choices for MobileMe, Exchange Server and Yahoo. Any advice how to add the choice (and then choose) Gmail? I use the Gmail account elsewhere (main Mail account, iCal) with little hitch.
    Thanks!

you need to have either an iphone or an ipod touch for this option to show up. if you don't have either but have a regular ipod you can use the following hack to do it.
    http://lifehacker.com/393855/enable-google-contact-sync-without-an-iphoneipod-to uch
however, that hack is incomplete. to make it active you have to set up a free yahoo account and enable yahoo address book sync. after that you'll be able to sync your AB with google.

  • Launch Address Book from Apple Mail

Has anyone come across a means by which to add a shortcut to address book to the Mailboxes navigation panel on the left side of the screen?
I have tried googling without success. I've searched the forum without success. It maybe that I've used the wrong search terms (wouldn't be the first time.)
Anyway, I tried dragging the address book from the dock into the nav panel with no success.
Also, yes, I'm aware of the toolbar link to "Address". Thanks in advance to anyone who points that out. I am talking about launching and bringing up the actual Address Book application.
    Cheers!

    1. The address book button doesn't launch the address book. It launches a pseudo address book (PAB). When I double click on an entry in the PAB, instead of seeing the entire entry I end up with a new email addressed to the entry. I'm not sure I can even get to the actual Address Book entry from the PAB!
So, from a user-interface prespective, you've got two different applications with virtually the same name, "Address Book" and "Address". The apps have different actions when you do the same thing. I find that irksome to say the least.
    2. Why can't I customize the Nav bar regardless of how other people use it?
that's something of a loaded question. I'm not privy to apple design decision but they have to walk a fine line between allowing too much stabilizability or too little. allowing too much of it may result in unwieldy and very hard to navigate interface, lead to bugs, software conflicts etc. allow too little and people complain. in this case the right thing to do IMO would be to fix the addresses button in Mail. quite a few functions in it were broken in Snow Leopard compared to previous versions of Mail.
also, Snow leopard does provide a much higher degree of stabilizability than previous OS X versions via services. as i said, you can make a service available in mail that will launch Address Book. you can also bind a shortcut to it.
I appreciate your presence and knowledge based on 20,664, soon to be "5" posts so I assume you're either a direct employee and or consultant who works with Apple on a daily basis.
    no, I'm neither actually.

  • Sync address book with Google Problems

I have just enabled the option to sync my address book with my Google contacts account. Before i sync'd i deleted everything in the google contacts as it was way out of date, The sync process appeared to have worked as all contact info from address book appears in my google account, but then i get a message indicating that more than 20% of the contacts in the OSX Address book are going to be changed, how can this be? ...
    Any ideas??
    thx
    John

John, I believe the answer lies in the subtle differences between contact fields used and populated by Address Book, and those used and populated by Google Contacts: they do not utilize the same fields for what, on the surface, appears to be the same info. For example, if your Address Book entry contains two words in the last name field, Google imports this as one word for middle name and one word for last name. The sync back from Google to Address Book results in "duplicate" entries, and the warning message that your Address Book entries will be changed.
I just spent two days trying to get this to work the way I wanted it to (I just got a new phone that syncs with Google Contacts. I did just what you did and found just what you discovered. It drove me nuts.
I concluded it what possible to line it all up between the two, but the amount of manual actions necessary on my part was not, for me, worth the time expended to do it. That's as far as I got.

  • Contact photos are not showing up in Mail message list, even though the message will link to the contact card in Address Book with the photo in it.

I'm using Mail 5.3 and Address Book 6.1.3 on X 10.7.5. I want my contact photos to show up in the message list on Mail, but only some of them do, even though the message will link to the contact card in Address Book with the photo in it. I've even tried replacing a photo that doesn't show up with a photo that does show up for a different contact but no luck. I am syncing to one other Mac, an iPhone and an iPad via iCloud.

  • High CPU usage for Mail/Address Book with Exchange/GMail

I reinstalled 10.6 on my MacBook Pro because it since the upgrade from 10.5 performance has been generally lousy and I wanted to make a fresh start. I am finding that my performance problems with Mail (which connects to both Gmail and Exchange) is still poor At all times, even when Mail is not processing any connections to either mail server, it consumes about 25% CPU just being idle. Oddly, Address Book uses 25% minimum CPU at all times. Also, in Address Book, I see the contact list for my Exchange account has the progress meter spinning at all times, even after a full reboot of the computer. My Mail and Contact lists are fully synced up at this point so I am not sure what all the overhead is for. It really drags down general performance of the machine, especially when I attempt to load any complex pages in Safari where I constantly see the pinwheel. This is all pretty troubling since this is a fresh install of the OS and I actually have same problems as I had with Mail before plus I now have new problems with Address Book that I DIDN'T have before. I haven't even turned on Time Machine because after the way it affected performance on my previous install for 15 minutes out of every hour it will surely render my machine useless.
    In a word, "Help".

My problem doesn't align exactly with yours, but I'd suggest you try this anyway (especially if you aren't using RSS within Mail - this is sure to blow away any Mail.app RSS feeds):
+So, if you see the Mail application growing in size until it aborts, it appears that the most direct fix is to quit Mail and delete the ~/Library/Mail/AvailableFeeds and ~/Library/Mail/AvailableFeeds-journal files. No reboots or other actions are required.+

  • Sync Address Book with Google Contacts

    Hi,
recently I am syncing the Mac Address Book and my iPhone with Google Contacts.
If I add a birthday to one of my contacts on my iPhone, the birthday also will be added on Google Contacts. If I sync my Mac Address Book with Google Contacts now, the birthday doesn't show up on my Mac Address Book.
So my birthday calendar in iCal always is empty...
    Any solutions?
    Regards and thanks,

    Hi,
Google uses Google Sync to synchronize your contacts with your iOS and OS X. But this, from Jan 30, 2013, is only available to the paid versions of Google Apps (read more on http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2716936).
You can continue to sync on both iOS and OS X using the CardDAV protocol, which, IMHO, is even better.
Follow the instructions in this post: http://support.google.com/mail/answer/2753077?hl=en
Mountain Lion Contacts also supports CardDAV accounts. All you need to do is add the CardDAV account with your account credentials and it will synchronize again.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    Ramses
