Synching iCal via Dropbox

Hi there,
I wish to sync my iCal calendars and Address Book data using Dropbox. I wondered whether anyone on the forums has been able to do this successfully, and whether they could offer any insight as to how reliable this is.
I know there are a few tutorials on the web on how to achieve this, but I am a little reluctant to move the iCal data folder to dropbox (would prefer to create the symlink within the Dropbox folder).
Any advice appreciated!

Hi Stig,
Merry Christmas to you too! I managed to get this working in the end, so I'll replicate the directions here for completeness.
*Before you begin ensure you have backed up your data, and have quit iCal and AddressBook on ALL computers that you intend to run this process on!*
1. Download and install [SymLinker|http://seiryu.home.comcast.net/~seiryu/symboliclinker.html] on ALL computers that you wish to sync to.
2. On the 'master' computer, create a Symlink for the entire AddressBook and iCal folder. These are stored at:
iCal Database is at: ~User/Library/Calendars
AddressBook Database is at: ~User/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
3. To create a symlink, right click on each of the above iCal and AddressBook folders and select 'Make Symbolic Link' from the context menu.
4. Move both of these symlinks to your desktop, and rename them to 'AddressBook' and 'Calendars', i.e., the exact same names as they appear in the Library folders (this is important).
5. On Dropbox, you may wish to create a folder called 'Applications'. This is not really necessary, however it helps with keeping the folder organised.
6. Drag the two symlinks from your Desktop to your Dropbox folder. This should then begin the process of uploading them to your Dropbox account.
7. On each of the 'slave' computers, delete the Calendars and AddressBook folders which appear in the library (Obviously back these up if you need to);
8. Quit Dropbox on the slave computers;
9. Right click on the Calendars and AddressBook folders (in your Dropbox folder) and create the symlinks for each. Drop the generated symlinks to your desktop and rename them to the names as per step 4.
10. Place these renamed symlinks to their Library positions (see step 1);
11. Start dropbox on the slave computer. Wait for Dropbox to complete synching.
12.Done!
Your data should now begin to trickle down on your 'slave' computers. Please bear in mind that it is best to only ever run iCal and Addressbook on one computer at a time, otherwise there is a risk of creating data conflicts.
For even faster synching, ensure all your computers are running version 0.7.2 of Dropbox which supports LAN synching.
I already have 1Password and The Hit List working this way and it's great!
Hope this helps all Dropbox users!

  • Using iTunes w/ Mac AND Windows via Dropbox

I'm doing my best to move my life to "the cloud" and the final missing piece is iTunes. I'm currently using iTunes on a Sony Vaio, storing all of my music and video on a 1TB external hard drive.
I recently got a MacBook Air and want to have access to at least my favorite music from anywhere via Dropbox. Can I copy my music (there's nowhere near enough room for the video) to my Dropbox account and then point the MacBook Air iTunes installation to my Dropbox account?
It seems that all of the library info is kept in a separate file, so I think this should work--but I would really appreciate it if the experts here can point out any problems, issues, or "gotchas" associated with this plan.
Of course I want to be able to enjoy my music anywhere, but I'm planning to make the MacBook Air primary at some point in the future so that I can sync my iPod Touch and my iPad to it.

Wow, first time I've seen this question. You are breaking new ground.
From the discussion I can see on the Dropbox Forums, there are people using it for iTunes backup, but no success using it as a source for streaming music. Take a look at this thread, for example.
Somebody else here may know more, but also you may want to post a very specific question on the Dropbox Forum.

  • When I try to sync my iPod iCal with my MBP iCal via WiFi I get a message saying "Safari Downloading Safe Browsing Data" but I am connected to a local network and thus the syncing does not complete"

When I try to sync my iPod iCal with my MBP (OS 10.7) iCal via iTunes and WiFi I get a message saying "Safari Downloading Safe Browsing Data" but I am connected to a local network and thus the syncing does not complete because the downloading never completes because I am not connected to the internet.
Why does syncing iCal need Safari Safe Browsing Data?  How can I turn this off?

    See:

"Safari Downloading Safe Browsing Data" is just some data that is synce with the computer. To turn off on the Mac go to System Preferencs>iCloud and turn off Safari

  • Share a .webloc file with Windows 7 via Dropbox

I like to simply drag a favicon of a website to the desktop to revisit this page later or to collect relevant sites while doing some research. I have created a folder structure for that on my Mac and put all this into my Dropbox to share it with a Windows 7 PC - assuming this would work like it does on my Mac.
I just realized that the PC can't open these files like my Mac does, by simply double-clicking them. It opens empty tabs in Firefox and/or Safari on the PC. When I open the file in notepad I see the actual URL is still inside the file, but it is not convenient to open each of these files in Notepad first, copy the URL and paste it into a browser.
Is there a better solution to share URLs (not all my Bookmarks) with a PC via Dropbox?

    Found a solution:

  • Numbers file created w new version of Numbers on my mac and then transferred  via Dropbox to my ipad: file cannot be opened by iOS version of Numbers

Numbers file created w new version of Numbers on my mac and then transferred  via Dropbox to my ipad: file cannot be opened by iOS version of Numbers

    Hi Jocomo,
That's correct. Dropbox does not handle Numbers 3.0 for Mac and Numbers 2.0 for iOS documents well at all. They will probably fix this.
But why are you using Dropbox for this?  Numbers has built-in iCloud integration for the very purpose of syncing documents back and forth.  It's much easier than using Dropbox even if Dropbox could handle the new Numbers format.  And it's now quite reliable.
To enable iCloud with Numbers on your Mac:
In System Preferences>iCloud make sure you have Documents & Data turned on:
And after clicking Options, make sure you have checked Numbers.app:
On your iPad you need to make sure iCloud sync is turned on in TWO places:
      Settings>iCloud>Documents & Data>Numbers
      Settings>Numbers>Use iCloud
If you have entered the right iCloud credentials on your Mac and iPad, Numbers will then sync back and forth. It's much easier than putting in Dropbox and then having to Open in... , etc.  You can of course still keep backup copies of your documents in Dropbox if you want.

  • I have a password protected Numbers document I created on my MAC and share via DROPBOX. Is there any way to simply view this doc on my IPAD without purchasing NUMBERS for the IPAD?

I use NUMBERS on my MAC to create a password protected document.  I share this doc via DROPBOX.  Is there any way I can view the doc on my IPAD without purchasing NUMBERS for the IPAD?  The doc opened fine on the IPAD before protecting it with a password.

Using the term "opened" may have been incorrect on my part.  Before password protection, I simply viewed the doc by selecting it within my DROPBOX app.  No revisions could be made, but I could view the doc.    Now, with the doc password protected, the IPAD states this file can not be viewed.
The IPAD users guide gives a list of files IPAD can view. Unfortunately, I find no info on how to open/view that file should it be protected. If

  • Can, and if so, how do you synch iCal with your Google calendar?

Am trying to synch my iCal information with Google Calendar.  I can find information to get Google info into iCal but not synching iCal information with into Google.

You can sync to one computer at a time.
When you sync to another it will delete the current content and replace with content from the new computer.
That would have nothing to do with it it not recognizing the device.

  • How to synch ical on ipad to mac

I am failing to synch ical on my mac with all the entries on ical on my ipad2.  Anyone know what I can be doing wrong?  I have ticked the box in itune to synch both calenders....

If you haven't tried already, plug your devices into iTunes, and on each device next to the "Summary" tab at the top is another tab called "Info." Click that and scroll down to Contacts, Calendars, etc. There should be a pull down bar under each category for "Sync contacts from..." and you should be able to select from that pull down list Outlook.  Hit Apply at the bottom and see if that does it.

  • One Keychain library on both iMac and MacBook Pro via Dropbox or...?

    Hi guys
I would like to have the same Keychain library on both my Macbook Pro and iMac?
Can I get this done via Dropbox or how can I fix this?
    Thanks!
    Bob

Why do you want to do this (I'm curious)?
I found this article which explains how to copy keychains from one Mac to another.  Keep in mind that this does not sync the keychains; it's only a snapshot of your existing keychain at the time you copy it.   And ... you are on your own doing this, especially if your Macs have different releases of OS X.

  • Google has synched iCal without my permission

    Google is out of control.
First it hijacked me into its "+" world via Youtube. Forcing me to create a "+" account (which I didn't want) if I wanted to keep all of my Youtube preferences, etc.
Now it has somehow dovetailed into my calendar app with IOS7, and is now synching events from one to the other. Without my permission.
How do I get Google out of my Calendar. It's now alerting me via email, several times a day about events, etc. Very maddening and creepy.
I did nothing to change settings, etc. This all started on its own after the IOS7 update.

OK, it was post Mavericks update. Somehow (NOT by me) the GMAIL option became checked in the ACCOUNTS section of iCal's preferences.

  • Synching Invites Via MobileMe

All of my synching of iCal is via MobileMe. Four devices are involved: iMac, MacBook Air, iPad and iPhone 4. Most items synch across all devices flawlessly. However, since the 4.0.2 and 3..2.2 updates for the two "i" devices, there is a problem.
Specifically, if I receive an iCal invite via email, it will add to iCal on the iMac just fine. Shortly, it will appear on the Air. BUT it will not show up EVER on the iPhone or the iPad. Any events that I originate on any of the four devices synch fine without any problem or delay. Anyone else have this problem or a possible solution?? (P.S. I have not updated to the "new" MobileMe.)

    Hi Darryl,
Reset the iPad, then try syncing.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
If that didn't help, Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPad. To turn iPad back on, press and hold the Sleep/Wake until the Apple logo appears.
    Try syncing.

  • Family sharing iCloud ID to synch iCal&Address Book, but do not want to share email.

    Hello,
I have both mine and my wife’s iphone paired to my icloud account so we can share/synch our Address Book, iCal, Find my iPhone, etc.  Plus, we share my iTunes account, though that is under a different Apple ID.
My email address is not in her mail folder, however she gets my mail  in her ‘All Inboxes’.
How do I stop this, yet still share my iCloud features (family plan - type)?
    Thx - Erik

Firstly, I've asked the hosts to edit your email from your post, it's not a good idea to post it in the open it will attract unwanted mail.
If your wife simply doesn't want your email she can turn off mail syncing in her iCloud settings.
If she wants her own me address she should have her own iCloud account, you could then add each others iCloud to your own a s a secondary account and just turn on the sync services you want.
