Synching Mail across computers

Are there any other ways to synch mail across iBooks without an .Mac account? I have Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger on an iBook G4 and 10.3 on an iBook.

Well, without more information about whether you're using POP because it's free, it's the only option your employer offers, etc., etc., it's hard to say what the best solution for you will be.
POP is optimized for users who access their mail from the same computer everytime. Its default behavior is to download the mail to the computer and then delete it from the server. To get the mail to another computer, you will have to synchronize all of your mailboxes between the computers, which will be a big hassle, easy to forget to do regularly, and easy to mess up, especially if you get mail regularly and use both computers often. You can tell POP servers to keep the mail on the server, but many POP servers have low limits on how much data you can store. If you're using a POP account because it's free, then there's a tricky work-around you could use, if you're not willing to find a free provider that uses the IMAP protocol. Set up a second POP account, then access the first account from the same computer every time, and set up that account to forward every mail you receive to the second account. Then access the second account from the second computer every time. This is an ugly solution, especially if you get a lot of mail, because you'll have to repeat filing/deleting actions on the second computer.
The short answer is that if you really need to access your e-mail from two computers regularly, you should use an IMAP account. Alternatively, use a web reader to access your POP mail. If you must use a POP account and don't want to use a web-based e-mail client, then you can copy the mailbox files from one computer to the other. You'll have to keep very careful track of which computer last accessed the account and is the up-to-date machine. I don't recommend this, because there's a lot of danger that you will accidentally delete mail you don't intend to.
Maybe if you provide a little more information about your mail provider (which will give us an idea of what options may be available to you - for example, Gmail allows one-time download by a second computer) any special circumstances, or specific needs you have, etc., someone can offer more useful information.

  • Synching mail across devices

I've been helping a friend with email on her iPad.  She actually has two iPads, one for her and one for her husband.  They also have a laptop each.  They share one email address (BT Mail) between them, and access it on all four devices.  The problem they are having is that although the inboxes etc appear to be synching properly, when an email is sent from one device they are unable to check the sent email on all four devices.  So for example, if iPad #1 sends an email, if laptop #2 is the first to look in the sent mail on the email account they will see that sent email, but none of the other devices will ever download it - it's as though laptop #2 got there first!
I've checked all the settings in her BT Mail, as of course my first thought was that a copy wasn't being left on the server after a mail client is used, but unfortunately BT Mail no longer has the option to check/uncheck a box.  I went through a long online-chat with BT tech support, at the end of which I was just told to contact Apple.
Does anyone out there have any ideas?
    Many thanks.

A better solution is if your email provider uses IMAP. IMAP sync email folders between multiple devices. Meaning any device will receive the email, all sent email can be seen on the devices. If you delete email from one device the email is deleted from all the other devices. Check with your email provider to see if they offer IMAP services.
If they do not your choices are to 1) configure email on the PC to keep Mail on the mail server or 2) change email providers to something like Gmail or Outlook.com (as examples). FWIW I use Cox IMAP email and fully sync email between a Win 8.1 Update 1 laptop, a Win 7 desktop, an iPad 4, an iPhone 4 and an iPhone 5S.

  • Where do I find the "On My Mac" mailbox files and can I Sync them across computers?

I want to find out if I can sync them across computers and have the files show up on my desktop and my notebook.

Here's where mine seem to be:
    Macintosh HD > Users > (MyName) > Library > Mail > V2 > Mailboxes > (etc.)
Not sure if yours are there.  I haven't tried syncing them between computers with a program such as Chronosync but it may work.
    Maybe this helps.

  • HT2500 how can I synch mail between an iMac and Macbook Air?

I have a Macbook Air running10.7.4 and an iMac running similar.  I use Mail as local tool for my hotmail account but this means inevitably that mail is nt synched between the iMac and MBA.  I want to be able to access my mail from both computers but only do so nce.  I would love to be able to synch mail folders between the two so that I could keep my mail in order.  Only having to read/delete once would be a further benefit

set it up as an IMAP account instead of POP. IMAP syn with server (which also means other devices using that mail sync too) where as POP doesn't modify what's on the server. most hotmail accounts setup by default as POP

  • If I set up Firefox synch on two computers, will I lose the bookmarks on one of the computers, or does synch combine the bookmarks of both computers onto both browsers?

If I set up Firefox Synch on two computers, will I lose all the bookmarks, preferences, etc. on one of the computers, because they will be replaced with the other computer's Firefox bookmarks, etc.? Or will the synch combine bookmarks, etc. of both computers, so that bothe browsers have all the bookmarks that were present in both browsers? If I add synch to a third computer, will those bookmarks also be added to the existing ones for all the other computers?

You can use Migration Assistant in Applications > Utilities to get all your files from one iMac to the other. If you want to upgrade your older model to MtLion you need to have at least a mid 2007 Intel Core 2 Duo with a bare minimum of 2GB of RAM. Then you need to buy the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 DVD , update with
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
at which point you can access the App Store to purchase and install MtLion 10.8 where you would then have access to the iCloud.

  • Is it possible to synch Mail and Outlook which running in Parallels?

I'm working on a Mac G5 running Leopard 10.5.1 and running Windows XP in Parallels. I mainly use the Mac side and have been told that I have to use Outlook in the Windows environment so I can access all it's wonderful features (most of which I find useless). I prefer to pause Parallels and use it only when I need it, which, as it turns out, is to mostly check for e-mail.
Is it possible to synch Mail up with Outlook so that I can easily glance at the dock and see if I have any new messages? If so, how?
    Thanks in advance

I'd be interested in knowing this as well!

  • Can't synch mail, contacts, calendars in iCloud since IOS 7

Since I installed IOS 7 on all of my devices, I cannot synch "mail, contacts and calendars" in iCloud Control Panel 3.0. When I try to check the box, a sync appears to be setting up but I get an error message before it can complete. I have sent the "Report" but this issue continues. I have reinstalled iCloud 3.0 and trid again, but to no avail. HELP! I need my iPad and iPhone to syc with my Outlook 2010 Contacts, Calendars, and Tasks.

If you get the error "Backup not successful" and you've tried deleting the last backup and trying to back up manually without luck, try the following test:   Go to...
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>manage Storage, tap your device name in the Backups section, then look under Backup options.  Turn off all apps from backup and then do a manual backup.  If that doesn't work, then this post will not help.  If the backup works, then go back to the app list and turn some on and try another backup.  If successful, keep repeating these steps.  If it fails at some point, then try to zero in on the one app that seems to make the backup fail.  (I had this problem and found one app failing, probably due to a corrupt data file.)
This process will take time, but if a backup works with no app data being used but clearly fails with the original settings, then somewhere in the mix of apps is a "bad" one.

  • What is the best way for my partner and I to share our work across computers?

What is the best way for my business partner and I to share our work (projects, libraries, images) across computers without emailing items?  Is there creative cloud storage place we can share?

Can't I just purchase the 200 GB storage, throw our photo library in it, share it with her, and have both of our new and future pics dumped into it?  If so, how do I do that?
The iCloud Photo Library cannot be shared between users, unless you are using the same AppleID.
You can share selected photos with shared albums:  iCloud: iCloud Photo Sharing FAQ
Or create a Photos library on an external drive, that you both can access, as described here for iPhoto:   iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users

  • Sharing iTunes purchases across computers

I have a Powerbook G4 and a MacBook Pro, both using the same iTunes account. If I purchase something (say, a television show) and download it to one computer, can I also download the same file from iTunes to the other at no extra cost?
iTunes allows this for free applications when using my iPhone and my iPod Touch (both synching to different computers but using the same account), but I am not clear on whether this principle applies to other content.
If not, is it possible to transfer the files via a flash drive, or will they only play on the computer to which they were downloaded?

Yes, you can. You can only download a track (or video or movie) once, so you'll just have to copy the tracks from one computer to the other. See:
iTunes for Mac: How to copy purchases between authorized computers
Though it refers to items purchased from the iTunes Store, it applies to all your iTunes content.

  • Any update on synching catalogs between computers...

I didn't see this mentioned in the Victoria's posted release notes...
I'm wondering if there are any plans to add synching capabilities between computers?  Having one catalog to use while tethering, exporting that catalog then importing it to my main catalog is just a lot of work that I wish didn't have to take place.  I'd even be fine with a requirement to never have both catalogs open at once.
It would also be nice to do processing work on my MacBook Pro while away from home and then be able to easily sync those changes back to my Mac Pro (something like how ChronoSync works).
    Jeff

I would also like to have an easy way to work with one LRCAT set between multiple computers. With LR3 you cannot store LRCAT files on a network drive. If we could then we could use it more like a central database. Sometimes I am editing images on my main PC but other times I want to work on my catalogs elsewhere in myhome from my laptop and have to import/export to  keep things in sync. I like may people that value their images like to keep my files on NAS storage to take advantage of the RAID1 protection and I belive with gigabit network equipement being the norm even for SOHO this should be acceptable performance, or at least a minor paus between image loads being much less of an anoyance than having to go through extra import/export processes.
I can also see a need for server based version of LR. Currently LR3 is conceptualy similiar to MS Access, and I can see a need for a self sufficient version of LR Server that would be conceptualy similiar to MS SQL Server. LR4 or a future version of the current LR product could be enhanced to be a required UI 'front end' or (a.k.a. fat client) to access the server based image reposator I will call LR Server.
This theoretical LR Server product would/should be licenced out of the box for single simultanious access so i lines up with the LR and PS EULA ability to use the same licence on a second portable comptuer for non simultanious use. Then there should be a way to upgrade the licence for multiple simultanous access for small companies that need one LR database accessed by multiple simultanous users. LR Server would not need security controls of its own as it can rely on usual server permissions, we just need easy central access without the anoyance of import/export processes.

  • Sharing iTunes library across computers

Step 5 of the Help file says "select 'Automatically import new purchases from [Computer Name].'" Where is that selection found?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd be happy to elaborate. In iTunes Help, enter "home sharing" as the search term, and select the top topic, "Sharing your iTunes library across computers." The five items are under the heading, "To import items from other libraries using Home Sharing."
I have gone over the steps again and found my problem. I was signed onto the Store under different names (different Mobile Me email address, both mine) on the two computers. I switched to the same name, then turned Home Sharing off and then on on both computers. When each opened the other's library, the other library window has a Settings button in the lower right hand window. That button produces a pane with setting for automatic transfer.
The Help file could be improved. Or iTunes could recognize multiple email addresses for one Mobile Me account. Thanks again.

  • Firefox sync is not syncing my bookmarks across computers I have set up for firefox sync,

  • Synchronize Mail Across Two Computers

    Hey everyone!
I have two iMacs running 10.5.7 with Apple Mail set to download email from my own domain with a POP server. I have a gigabytes of locally stored mail that I would like to have synchronized to another, iMac also running 10.5.7. I don't have the option of IMAP, but even if I did, the gigabytes of saved mail would go over my quota.
I tried using Live Mesh, but it does not support files in the /library directories, and MobileMe does not support IMAP/POP accounts.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks in advance!

there is no good way to keep POP mail synced across two computers. one time syncing is possible by exporting a mail archive and moving it to another computer but it's not something you want to do on a regular basis. the best i can suggest is to check the option in mail preferences->accounts->advanced to keep messages on the server after retrieval. this way you can download them to both computers.

  • Is there a way to sync mail across multiple computers without using .mac?

I'd like to be able to use either of my machines to check/respond to email, and have both of them be updated with both incoming messages and my replies. Is this possible outside of using a .mac account?
I'm using 10.4.6 and also the latest version of Mail.
Thanks in advance for any insight!

Yes, there are several people that have published the steps to set up your own .Mac service by reverse engineering the protocol and rolling their own server to provide web services to emulate .Mac.
If you are looking for a hobby, I would encourage you to try it. Assuming you are sophisticated enough to google it and find some steps you can use, it should not be that hard to set up.
Please note - I haven't looked over the licenses for all of the software involved (Mac OS and .Mac) - you might be in violation of your license term by reverse engineering parts of the system or violating copyright/patents. As long as you don't go into business or diverting income from Apple - you may well be fine by learning how they did things.
P.S. I assume you mean syncing the mail settings, not the actual contents of the mail box.
