Synching MBP to Mac Pro

Dear Board,
Can I have the MBP "talk" to the Mac Pro via the Airport Extreme cards without a cable running between the two, or do I need a wireless router?
Thanks for your help.
B3

you do not need an airport base station.
you can network your two computers together using the airport cards installed in them.
- you will need to select the airport menu in the upper right hand corner. in the drop down, you will need to choose " create network"
- then you need to go to network preferences. change the Show menu to " airport." click on the tcp/ip tab. get the ip address.
on the other computer, join the created network from the Airport menu.
open finder. from the Go menu , choose, "connect to server"
enter in the ip address and connect as a registered user. you will need to enter in the user name and password for the computer you are trying to connect to.
the end result will be to mount the hard drive of one computer on the desktop of the other. you can copy files to and from the hard drives after that.

  • 13" MBP vs Mac Pro desktop

Ok, help me out here... The new MBP seems pretty powerful, I am going to be upgrading, and I am torn on the direction to go..
In a perfect world, I would go with a Mac Pro desktop, a little older, but with 10.7, soemthing I can run two monitors off of, and expand in the future... With that I would get an 11"  MBA, to travel with (I travel a lot)
My other choice is to get a 13" MBP - fully loaded (SSD etc) - and use that as my primary, but can take it if I need to...
My problem is when I travel I have to lug my 15" work DELL with me, and it would get HEAVY with the 13" MBP and that.
I barely have room now with the DELL and my 1st gen 13" MBA.
I do not do heavy video, just lots of pictures, and office suite type work.
The desktop might be overkill, but I HATE the computer lagging behind, or crashing due to low resources.
I want to run Parallels as well.
    Any thoughts???

A MacBook Pro can run off of two monitors with solutions by Matrox.  However, those are nowhere near as fast as PCI or AGP based cards that can be put in a Mac Pro.   Save your money, and get http://www.virtualbox.org/  it works just as well in most instances.   SSD is another case where you can save money.  Currently there is no means of erasing SSDs, meaning if you sell the machine, your personal information is still hidden somewhere on them.   Stick to standard hard drives.   Macs only crash, if they are subject to bad memory, or overflowing hard drives, or the rare program that is incompatible and doesn't keep up with an operating system update, or a peripheral that does not have the latest driver support.   Upgrading is not as necessary on the Mac*: http://www.macmaps.com/upgradefaq.html
Any MacBook Pro will have enough room to handle photos and e-mail.  If you take a lot of RAW photos, you'll want to either invest in DVDs to burn on or get extra external hard drives to backup to*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
I'd only get a Mac Pro if I do a lot of heavy Photoshop manipulation, video, or video games.

  • Accessing MBP and Mac Pro from iPhone (back to my mac? VPN?)

i am running Mountain Lion on the Mac Pro and Mavericks on the MBP and i am wondering if i have options for accessing these computers from my iPhone 5.
is this Back to My Mac and if so should i be able to access both computers from the iPhone while running this and what should i search for for setup instructions? or is this a utility only for getting back to my MBP running Mavericks from the iPhone or for getting back to my Mac Pro from my MBP? i am a bit confused about all of this.
also, does VPN get me something that Back to My Mac does not?
    TIA for any help

Back to My Mac is for connecting from one Mac from another Mac with your iCloud account. iOS is not a Mac, so that isn't a supported feature – tell Apple you want it – http://apple.com/feedback/
A VPN is not the same as Back to My Mac. A VPN is a way to 'securley connect into a network from the outside' so that you can access your home network whilst away etc. VPN's can be created on computers or some routers. A VPN on a network can potentially allow you access to everything on that local network.
You should probably read up on what each of them is…
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_to_my_mac
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vpn
You will need to explain what exactly you want to access - e.g. the files on the Mac, or use the UI to control the Mac (as if you were in front of it).
Apps like Screens can allow you some access to the Mac via iOS http://edovia.com/screens
You may find is much simpler to store required files in Dropbox & access them on iOS, it really depends on what you hope to access.
VPN's can be setup with Mac OS X Server, but that is probably not something to run unless you really need it (and have time to learn how to set up correclty - it will require you open up ports on your router which is a real security risk).

  • Connection issue MBP to Mac Pro

i have an old issue where when i access my mac pro from my MBP it is called "MyName Mac Pro (2)" and i have always wanted to get rid of the "(2)" because it annoys me that i cannot control why it is there.
now i have an issue where the Mac Pro just comes up with a blank Finder window and shows that i am connecting via my iCloud account email address (which seems just plain bizarre) and i can't get the "disconnect" to work so i can't access my desktop from the laptop.
anyway i am going to turn off wifi and try to connect again but i would like to solve this name issue and if anyone has any tips on either of these issues it would be great.
    TIA

  • How to copy a project from MBP to Mac Pro without media

    Explanation:
Our Director takes all the video interviews, imports this media into a Mac Book Pro (FCP X 10.1.1), creates a Project, makes his audio selects, and edits the video onto the timeline.  Then he copies the Project to a portable hard drive.
In the meantime, we have imported all the media into our main edit station, a Mac Pro.  Now we plug in the portable drive, open that Library, and copy the Project with the video interview selects to our main Event with all the media on the Mac Pro.
The problem is ... the media of the interview selects is also copied.  Then we have duplicate media in our Event.  With the previous version of FCP X, we could copy over the timeline without media, then reconnect it.
    Any solutions?  A better way?
    Thank you.

    Hi Cliff,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
For your particular workflow to be successful, the media needs to be stored outside the Library (External Media). It is important that the media that is being shared is identical on all drives or computers.  The resource below will provide additional information and best practices for working with media in the new Final Cut Pro 10.1.1 environment.  See Page 4 regarding Managed vs. External Media.
Managing Media with Final Cut Pro X Libraries
    www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/docs/Media_Management.pdf
    Managed and External Media
Media that you import into a specific library is stored inside the library and is referred to as managed media. Media can also be imported or copied to any location on a connected volume and linked to the library as external media. Multiple users can access this external media instantly on shared storage, including a storage area network (SAN) such as Xsan, Apple’s SAN file system.
Page 16-18 includes suggested workflows for collaborating with other editors.  The Transfer Library option on page 18 may work well for your particular situation:
To hand off new events to a working library using a transfer library
Another way to hand off new events to a working library on shared storage is to create an intermediate library, or “transfer” library. For example, an assistant editor can create a transfer library containing new events to be handed off to the primary editor, and then copy the new events from the transfer library to the primary editor’s working library.
    1. On the system you want to transfer from, select the events you want to hand off.
    2. Choose File > Copy Events to Library > New Library.
    3. In the window that appears, type a name for the new library, navigate to a location for the new library, and click Save.
    4. If you want to include optimized or proxy media in the new transfer library, select the appropriate checkboxes in the window that appears, and click OK.
    5. In the Libraries list, select the newly created library and choose File > Close Library.
    6. On the destination system, open the new transfer library by choosing File > Open Library > [library name], and drag the updated events to the working library.
Note: Motion templates are not managed as assets within the library but are instead stored in ~/Movies/Motion Templates/. If a project is dependent on custom titles or other Motion templates, these must be handed off separately. Placing updated Motion templates in a central location on shared storage as a last step in any handoff process guarantees that all editors working on a project can access the templates at any time.
I hope this information helps ….

  • Can I use Lion Server to sync files from my MBP and Mac Pro tower?

I have a 2008 Macbook Pro and a Mac Pro I'd like to sync files between. I also have a Mac Mini that I'm considering for an OS X Lion Server install if it could help sync all my files across computers. Any suggestions would be greatly appriciated!

There is a simple way for unmanaged clients.
To point an unmanaged client to your update server, enter the following command in terminal:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://<your_server>:8088/index-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.sucatalog
(replace <your_server> with the dns name of your update server.  If the unmanaged client runs snowleopard or leopard, adjust the url accordingly. For snowleopard clients, remove the "lion-" part. For leopard clients, remove the "lion-snowleopard-" part

  • Share MBP wifi with Mac Pro using Bluetooth

hey there, is it possible to share my MBP wifi with Mac Pro 2009 which doesnt have and airport extreme installed (yet) using bluetooth? I sort of paired both devices, and internet sharing is ON on MBP, my Mac Pro connects but there is no internet! Im using Time Capsule as a router. Maybe someone knows the answer? Thank you

No. You can share it to an Ethernet connection, though: run an Ethernet cable between them and share to that connection.

  • Mac Pro 2013 Using Too Much RAM

I have a 6-core Mac Pro (2013) with 64GB of RAM. I have this feeling that the computer, and some assortment of processes, is sucking up a lot more of the RAM than they need to. As a point of reference, I use the vast majority of the RAM for audio production.
My concern is that, when I turn my computer on, it is already using 10 GBs of RAM right off the bat. One particular process, kernel_task, likes to use anywhere from 2-10 GBs. I can't imagine there is any reason for the Mac and all of its other processes to ever exceed even 4 GBs of RAM, let alone the upwards 20-30 that it will eventually consume. I say this because I migrated all of the data and processes form my 2010 Macbook Pro, which only has 8GB. Upon start-up, it is never using more than 2-4 GBs of RAM. I would assume, then, that my Mac Pro can get by using little more 4GBs (preserving the other 60GB for my much more resource-intensive music work). Both the MBP and Mac Pro have Mavericks 10.9.
Is there a way to cap the amount of RAM the computer, and any other process, uses, so I can preserve the majority of it for the tasks I know need it most?

Have you seen www.macperformanceguide.com ? focus is more on graphics and photography and where 128GB is shown to help.
The old method, to conserve and not use memory, went away years ago so as not to let a valuable resource sit idle and not being used.
Even if you don't have pageouts the system dynamically will use more if and when there is more memory present.
The numbers you report are not unusual. 1-2GB in today's world is like 50MB might have been 20 years ago - people were moaning over the fact that OS 7 was a memory hog as it now needed 40-50MB just to launch the Finder.

  • Networking my MacBook with my Mac Pro - Firewire

Does anyone know of the correct settings to network your macbook pro with your mac pro for file sharring over firewire?

    This is not very hard.
Make sure both machines have firewire networking turned on - make sure that they both get IP addresses assigned by DHCP.
    1) Go to System Preferences - Networking and select the Nework Status pulldown.
    2) If Firewire is not on the list, press configure select the network port config on the pulldown and tick Firewire.
Both machines are now set up to use the Firewire port as a network connection.
On one machine (the Mac Pro) - go to the sharing tab and share your internet connection (Ethernet or Airport) with computers connecting via Firewire.
That's it. You are good to go.
When you plug in the MBP the Mac Pro will act as a DHCP server and assign an IP address to the MBP.

  • Mackbook Pro with iPhone - now plus Mac Pro

    Hi,
Is there a way to add my Mac Pro into the Sync mix? I normally sync my iPhone with my MBP laptop but now I may also Sync my iPhone with my office Mac Pro.
    1) Can all 3 units share iTunes, iPhoto, iPhone apps & info, etc?
    2) What's the best way to have both my MBP and Mac Pro have access to the same files or contain the same info? Networking, iSync, Mobile Me - what's the best way to achieve this?
    Thanks.

iSync is only for syncing non-Apple mobile phones. It doesn't sync the iPhone or between Macs.
The best way to keep your iPhone, MacBook Pro and Mac Pro in sync is using MobileMe. However that won't keep your iTunes Library contents or iPhoto Library contents in sync between the machines. To do the latter is somewhat harder.
The MobileMe forums start here: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=116
To have the same files available on two or more Macs (or iPhones, Windows & Linux PCs) I'd whole heartedly recommend Dropbox which seamlessly, and quickly, syncs any files you want between such devices.
(MobileMe's own iDisk is very slow and clunky in comparison.)

  • Very slow network connection on Mac Pro

I have a FiOS connection and good speeds on my Macbook Pro and iPad. However, my 2010 Mac Pro connects like a dog. I just connected to my yahoo page which gives typical results. On my Macbook Pro it took 3-4 seconds. On my Mac Pro it took 58 seconds for the initial page content to arrive on my screen and 1:40 for the page to be fully loaded. This is typical. It doesn't matter if I connect through ethernet or wireless - same results. It doesn't matter which browser I use.
I ran speedtest and the results were actually better on the Mac Pro - I have no ide why
Mac Pro ping 16 ms  DL 30.73 mbps   UL 14.28 mbps
Macbook Pro 17 ms  DL 20.58 mbps   UL 14.22 mbps

    Any suggestions.

Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. *Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Hot Synch does not work, Treo 755p, USB, 17" Mac Pro Laptop, even with RevD installed and Allow other HotSynch applications preference check box checked

    Hi,
I am a long time Palm enthusiast who is frustrated.  No more Palm products for me or anyone I speak to until I solve this problem.  Someone at Palm should be paying attention to their long time cusotmers.  I bought Palms in 2002 and 2003.
The support literature coming with two Treo 755p that I bought was so poor that never saw the fine print that there was three months of support if I registered the devices.  The registration page does not let me register.  All the fields are ghosted after I put in the serial number.  I bought one in June 2008 and the other in early 2008.  So never registered and can get no help from Palm now it seems.
So beside that gripe below is the problem issue info.
I can't get a Verizon Treo 755p to USB cable Hot Synch with my daughters 17" Mac Pro Laptop.  It is using OS 10.5x  She lives in another city so I am trouble shooting this remotely.
Did - Revd Palm upgrage has been installed.
    PalmDesktopMac421Revd.dmg (17MB)

Did in advanced settings on the Treo select in the Synch preferences allow other Hot Sync applications.
That process worked however on my own Treo 755p Verizon as below:
After much work, hours over several months, I got my my Treo 755p Verizon to Hot Synch with a QuickSilver desk top Mac running os 10.5x.
    Did the RevD upgrade.
Did in advanced settings on the Treo select in the Synch preferences allow other Hot Sync applications.   Otherwise the Wireless Synch feature prevents a Hot Synch.
Once those both were done than Hot Synch works fine, and Wireless Synch works fine and does not interfere.
The Wireless on both PDAs is scheduled to be removed on both Treos due the economy on Feb. 4th, so I would like the HotSynch to be working so her Treo is backed up.
Thanks so much to anyone who replies to help out.

Works now, she had created a user ID as prompted when installing the HotSynch Software, but it was not the same name of the Treo 755p.  The default ID was the one she from installing the software, so it showed nothing in address or contacts, but when she switched to the Treo ID than all her stuff was there.

  • Mac Pro 2.66 Logic , still synch error ? is this possible ?

well , here goes my suprise . got recently Mac Pro 2.66 , one of the fastest machines around and i still get "could not synchronise data in time " error when CPU Usage of OS X is only on 12% !!! with not much happening in a Song ? is this still draging every body else down ? i used to have a lot of synch errors when i was on Pentium 4 Logic 5.5
now i switched to Mac hoping to have better workflow and still having Logic stoping because of that annoying synch error. what about you out there , quad owners !
p.s. i have audio buffer on set 125 . should not be a problem

i think logic is fine Instrument it needs to be improved just as any other major DAW's . synch errors like , coundn't process data in time etc, is 20th century . there is enough tech knowelege nowedays to sort this legacy of the past out . what i'm afraid to go into is to start twicking OS till i would go Grey and not having any improvement as i did when i was usin PC & Windos . Melissa .., i have those error poping up without audio files in a song , only logic Synths and Stylus can cause those pop up . i don't want to dramatize it i have qute bearable interaptions but still those kind of Audio or whatever related problems they might be should be sorted out once and for all by Apple . also i constructed audoload on a new system i was using Cubase before i moved to Mac .
for Chris', attention i've got quite qood Audio interface hooked up : Yamaha i88x Mlan interface .
i'm hopeing to hear more feedback on this thread though.
