Synching new iPhone to iTunes

I've updated iTunes to 10.7 on my PC, my old iPhone 3GS was previously synched to this laptop computer. I want to now synch my new iPhone 4 to my laptop but iTunes wants me to synch using the old iPhone information which I do not want to synched to my new iPhone. How do I remove the old synch information so that iTunes only recognizes my new iPhone? If I choose to synch as it is now it will erase everything on my new iPhone which is not something I want to happen.
On a whim I created a backup of my new iPhone through iTunes and let it synch, it erased all the info and replaced it with the previous info just as I suspected it would. It deleted all my contacts and apps.
Can i uninstall iTunes and reinstall it and it will recognize it as a new synch? This is very screwed up that iTunes will not allow a new device to be synched without trying to erase all your data and synch to old information.
Does this make sense? I've scrolled through previous questions but none, that I could find, match what i'm trying to do unless I read over a previous post. Thanks for any and all help.

To prevent a sync when plugging in the iPod/iPhone with the cable - hold down the 'option' and the 'command' keys when plugging in the iPod/iPhone - key the keys down until the iPod/iPhone is listed under the Devices list in iTunes - this will prevent a sync from taking place and you will be able to change your settings.
You should then be able to transfer purchases from the iPhone to your iTunes.
To transfer other content you can use PhoneView from www.ecamm.com.

  • I would like to synch my iPhone with iTunes so that some of the music is SYNCHED to the device (i.e. certain playlists). Currently, it seems like the phone will only allow me to play music via MATCH/Cloud (wifi or cellular network)

We recently got a new iMac.
Synching has been a bit of a challenge. We also recently upgraded to include CLOUD / Match service.
Now, when I synch my iPHone to iTunes, the music section does not allow me to download certain songs / artists / albums / playlists DIRECTLY to my iPHone. I would prefer to have the music resident on the phone vs relying on wifi or my cellular coverage.

Right. That's you signed up for iTunes Match.

You can do either or both.
Download the songs to the iPhone when on wifi (to avoid using all your cell data)  adn they will be resident ont he phone.
Or simply stream them when you want and not download them.
You can create playlists in iTunes on your computer. These will get transferred to the iPhone via iTunes Match.
Then select these playlists on the iPhone to download them to the iPhone.

  • When i tried to sync my new iPhone to Itunes, I accidentally clicked on sync with my ipod, instead of creating a new one. So now my iphone is the replica of my ipod, deleting my contacts and pictures etc. Is there a way to get it restored?

Only if a backup of the iPhone with all that data on it exists.  If one does, restore the iPhone using that backup.

  • I can't synch my iPhone with iTunes because the device does not show up in a device window when I plug it in...it's missing in action and thus I'm not able to add any content from the iTunes to my iPhone, e.g. podcasts

I can't synch my iPhone with iTunes because the device does not show up in a device window when I plug it in...it's missing in action and thus I'm not able to add any content from the iTunes to my iPhone, e.g. podcasts.   All the instructions on synching start with "find your device in the device window".  But what if you have no device window?

Missing "message" from above: The iPad "DGMTR" is synced with another iTunes library on DGMTR's MacBook Pro. Do you want to erase this iPad and sync with this iTunes library? An iPad can be synched with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iTunes library.
I thought the libraries were the same.

iTunes Match is a subscription system that allows you to upload your own music (e.g. coped from CDs) to the cloud so that it shows (in the cloud) on your devices and computers without having to sync/copy it.
Automatic downloads allows to, for example, buy an app on your computer's iTunes and have it automatically download on your phone without having to connect and sync it or go to the Purchased tab in the App Store app on your download and download it yourself - but doing that, going to the Purchased tab and redownloading an app, should get it associated.
But no, I'm not aware of any problems that not having it associated causes.

I don't understand this answer. What do you mean " your contacts should be in whatever program/service you have selected to sync."? The address book is created on the phone not in Itunes or any other program/service. When Itunes says backing up phone I have to assume it backs up everything on the phone. Most of what's on my phone does not come out of itunes. I download apps directly on the phone. When the software updates it does not bring those apps back. I have to go into the appstore and install them all over again. Itunes music library syncs with whatever is on the device your linked up to BUT the phone book just dissappears after you update the phone. There is no way to save it anywhere else.

  • Moving to a new iPhone without iTunes

My friend just bought a new iPhone. He had been syncing it for awhile to his old PC, which is now just dead in the water. He got a new iPhone and wants to move his data (contacts etc) to the new iPhone, without iTunes.
He doesn't have an iCloud account yet, so I *think* he can just make an iCloud account on his old iPhone, turn on syncing, then go to the new iPhone and do the same.
If not, then I have a Mac with iTunes. I can make a new user account for him, and then plug in the iPhone and I *think* backup the iPhone to iTunes.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

You need to contact Apple to get the questions reset. Click here, phone them, and ask for the Account Security team, or fill out and submit this form.

  • HT201269 I just synced my new iphone through itunes and it deleted my new pictures.  is there any way to get them back?

I just syned my new iphone through itunes and it deleted all of my new pictures.  is there anyway to get them back?

Do you sync your iPhone with iTunes every once in a while? If yes, there are chances that iTunes has taken last backup of your photos, contacts, etc. that you want back.
Connect your iPhone with your PC. launch iTunes, right click on your device and click on "Restore from Backup". Choose the latest backup to proceed.
If you configured iCloud for backup before you restored your iPhone. Go to Settings -> iCloud -  > and login using your Apple ID. Once you've logged in, all the photos, contacts, mail, messages should be back on your iPhone. This may take a while (depending on your network).
Alternatively, if you are only now setting up your iPhone, choose 'Restore from iCloud Backup' in the setup screen. Login with Apple ID and the iPhone will be restored from the latest iCloud backup.

  • New iphone and itunes question

    Hi all,
I just upgraded to the 4s from a 3gs. I have synched the new phone itunes. it all seems to be ok except that itunes seems to think that my phone is new every time i connect it. it brings up the lets get started screen. when i go into icloud and send my phone a test message it goes to the old on even though the number i am using for the new phone is the same i used for the old one. so im not sure where i am going wrong. it seems like itunes does not see my new phone as my primary device.
    any help is appreciated!

We've run into the "authorization loop" problem with iPhone syncing as well. After moving the user account to the new MacBook Pro, iTunes keeps asking us to authorize the computer, then tells us that it is already authorized (which it should be). When you click "ok" to the already authorized message, it pops up with a new request to authorize the computer.
This was a minor problem with songs purchased with iTunes, but now if we sync the iPhone on the new laptop, it says it will delete all the apps and their data unless we authorize the computer. But we run into the same loop described above. This is a real problem, and if anyone can point me to a good working solution, I'd appreciate it. I hope Apple is listening!
