Synching same iPod to PC and Mac possible?

wondering if i can add songs at my friend's house on his Mac/iTunes. i manage mine at home on a PC/iTunes. do you have to register it again? does it have to be reformatted? is it worth it?

Thanks Jeff for helping me out with my query re. my ipod. It has clarified my problem somewhat but not fully. I'm still wondering why it went wrong in the first place. I mean, it was working perfectly since I got it in Feb. '05, why then did it suddenly start skipping in August '05? I did nothing differently, so I still don't understand what went wrong.
Considering that I'm not a technician, and I had no idea about Fat32 and HFS+ formatting (I do now, thanks to you!) how would I have had any idea about software I might have needed to install?? And why do I need to install it anyway, as it was working fine without it til recently? Do you see what I mean? It's all very well getting defensive about Apple ipods and how good they are, but why are there so many problems with them?
"Ah yes, that old chestnut. This is a support forum for folks who have issues with their iPods so what exactly would you expect to see here?"
Why should there be a forum if everything was fine and everything was straightforward. That's the problem, when something goes wrong and you go back to the shop expecting help, you find that half the time they don't have a clue and you're left on your own to sort it out.
Don't get me wrong, I love my ipod, but I haven't a clue about software and haven't the time (I wish I had) to search around on websites etc. going from pillar to post to try to find straightforward answers, so that's why I was so frustrated. You can't even update your software on the PC or Mac because if you do it on one, it wipes out the other's Library. So in the end, all that's left is to buy another ipod and keep one for the Mac and one for the PC!

We have several iphones, ipod touches, ipad and mac's if we all install icloud under the same apple account will they all sync together...we don't want that to happen!!

If any of you are like me, I had one single AppleID under MobileMe.  Under my AppleID I had two additional Email addresses, one for my wife and one for her Mother.  Each used their individual email accounts on their login on the home Mac and on their individual Iphones.
In order for them to not lose their email acounts when mobileMe goes away and/or you move your appleID acount from MobileMe to iCloud, you simply need to beaware of the folowing.  Have each person with an email address under your AppleID MobileMe go to www.me.com; enter their email account and password in the corresponding fields.  However, don't press the login button. Instead press the sentence under the login fields that says something to the effect of "do you want to move/migrate to iCloud.  Follow the prompts from there.
In essence what Apple has done--albeit not communicated anywhere--is that they automatically created AppleIDs for each of those additonal email addresses you have/had under MobileMe.  Therefore, use that email and password after moving from MobileMe to iCloud and your good to go.

If you  have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar

  • Help please with ipods dock windows and mac based

    Hello everyone,
I have an ipod but want to upload from two different locations. I found out from a reply from a previous question that I can do that but my problem seems to be that I have a windows based laptop at home but at my other location in my office I am using a Mac. From what I read I can not do this from one location to the other without reformating my ipod everytime which would be useless to me sense I do not have the same music or do all of my purchases from one location. Is this possible to upload from a windows and mac computer from two different locations or is this impossible? Thanks in advance!!!

Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows.

If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.
    Then see this.

  • IPod with PC and Macs

Is there any way that if my iPod is formatted for PC i can also use it on a MAC?

In addition to the other responses in this thread (which are correct) you should know that you will NOT be able to update the iPods firmware from the Mac if it is formatted for Windows. When you need to do a firmware update, you'll need to do it from the PC.

  • It is possible for linux version to use the same icons of windows and mac version in the navigation bar?

Firefox for linux uses the gtk theme icon in navigation bar, instead mac and windows uses other (trasparent) icons . I find more beautiful icons used in mac and win. Is there any way to force firefox to use this type of icons?

Have you checked the themes add ons? You may find a "Windows 7" theme or something similar!

  • I need help synching my iPod to my older Mac

    Hi,
I have a 3rd gen iPod Touch (is that the generation before they came out with the camera?).  And, I had it synched with my home computer (a G4 running 10.4.11) for the longest time.  Well, then (in efforts to getting the latest iOS) I synched it with my work computer (a MacPro running Snow Leopard).  Clearly, I understand the difference in the Mac OS's and therefore the different iTunes version.
However, I'd like to reformat my iPod to begin synching it with my home computer.  (I utilize iCal at home, and would like to integrate it on my iPod).
So, I've erased the iPod (using it's proprietary erasing feature) and then plugged it in at home.  However, I still get the error: "upgrade your version of iTunes to the latest version."  I've upgraded everything I can, but I still get this error.  I'm guessing the iPod is still looking for the MacPro (or, at least, the latest iTunes -- which I can't install on my PowerMac G4).
Any suggestions?  Is there anyway to format the iPod so it thinks it's a brand new iPod?  I'm not worried about my apps - those are all saved in my Apple Acct.
    Thanks,
    J

I can't downgrade even if the iPod was originally setup on the older G4 ??  I guess I could check into leopard on my G4.  I didn't think I could run leopard.  I thought 10.5 was for Intel-chipped Macs.  But, I guess yours is running fine
Yeah, I have a Dual 1.25Ghz processor, so, apparently, it should work fine.
And, I guess I have the 2nd gen ipod touch -- determined by the list (thanks Carolyn Samit) and by the fact that it's the 8Gb flashdrive.
Ok, I'll check into 10.5 for the G4!

  • How can I use the same catalog on PC and MAC?

I keep my catalog and photos on an external hard drive.  I have both PCs and a MAC and I would like to be able to access the same catalog of photos on both my PC and my MAC using LR2.  I am using v 2.3.  The problem is the location of the photo is referenced differently on the PC than on the MAC.  Does any one have any idea how I might accomplish this?
If this is impossible, then can anyone at least tell me how I can convert my catalog file (lrcat) so that the location of photos that are currently referenced using a drive and path (eg, p:\myphotos\...) to a format that can be used on the MAC so Lightroom running on the MAC will know about the photos on my external drive?

I have figured out the answer to my question.  Thanks to those who tried to help.
First of all, I found that Lightroom's 'Locate folder' didn't work for me.  It might have if I had tried that the first time I tried to convert things, but I had tried to locate a few photos already, so I was always told that the folder I was trying to locate was already in the catalog.
Breifly, what did work was to locate individual photos using the ? you see on the photo when in grid mode in the Library view and specify that other photos nearby should also be relocated.  By choosing a photo at the top of the directory tree, Lightroom will search for all photos in the directory containing your photo and all subdirectories of it.
    The details:
What did work, was to individually locate photos using the ? you see on the photo when in grid mode in the Library view.  If you turn on the choice to locate other photos nearby, then Lightroom will search for other photos in this directory and in all subdirectories of the one containing your located photo.  This was a good start, but the problem for me is that my photos are stored in many directories below an organizing directory (eg, \2009\2009-01-02) and the organizing directory (\2009 in this example) does not contain any photos to locate.  Furthermore, each of my orgainizing 'yearly' directories are organized in one top directory (\Photos) that also has no photos in it to locate.  So, to make use of this feature, I had to create a photo in at least the top directory that I could use for finding the rest.  I call this a 'FindMe' photo.  I found that it needed to have a totally different file name than any other photo in my library.  So, I created on be exporting another photo (with very poor resolution to keep the size small) and giving it a name of FindMe-<directory_name>.  I also found it helpful to give it a caption of 'FindMe' to use in locating the photo.  I imported this photo into the top directory (\Photos) on the PC.
The next step was to open the .lrcat on the Mac.  Looking at the grid of all photos, I narrowed down the photos to just those that had a caption of 'FindMe' or a file name of FindMe.  That located the photo in \Photos that I could use to start the search for all the rest.  (Note that giving your locating photo a name you can easily find is important because all you will be able to see when you look at all of the photos is just a blank square and I couldn't find any way to tell Lightroom to only show me photos in this one directory, excluding subdirectories (this is a feature they should add to Lightroom).)
Now theoretically, this trick should have located all of my photos.  However, in a library of over 55,000 photos, there's bound to be some problems.  It turns out that my library that started in Adobe Photoshop Elements had some entries that didn't point to the file properly...in fact there was a blank space at the beginning of the filename.  We had caught this problem and renamed the file on the hard drive properly, but a few catalog entries had missed the correction of the filename before we converted this to a Lightroom catalog.  (Elements tolerated the blank space in the file name, Lightroom does not).  This caused Lightroom to hang when it was locating file.  I solved this problem by fixing a lot of these in the PC catalog.  (This took some doing, because Lightroom would first give me a ? to let me locate the file, but it quickly realized it had a problem and changed the ? to a danger sign that would not allow me to do anything with the photo.  So, I had to act quickly to correct the problem with these photos.)  That fixed a lot, but there were apparently still some problems in the library that caused Lightroom to hang when locating photos.  Also, as the number of photos that were properly relocated grew, I found that it took too long to let Lightroom try to fix the entire library.  So, I started creating FindMe photos in the few remaining 'yearly' organizing directories and locating files in each of these.  That pretty much did the trick.
My wishlist for Lightroom new features:
    1.   I would like it if I could tell Lightroom to locate all photos within a directory (with the choice to includ subdirectories) in a particular place.  By this, I mean to go from the directory, not from a specific photo within a directory.
    2.  I want to be able to tell Lightroom to only display photos within a particular directory (excluding those in the subdirectory).  This would make it a lot easier to locate my 'find me' photos and would eliminate the need to make the so identifiable.

  • Ipod on windows and mac

i hav a ipod that i used for my desktop, which is windows
is there any way to alternative from my desktop and my macbook, using itunes on both of them?

Strictly speaking using a Windows formatted iPod on a Mac isn't supported however many people use one without any issue. iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac; however Apple currently only supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac. An alternative if you do have problems is to restore and reformat the iPod on the Mac then use a third party program that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows. This is one for instance gets good reviews: XPlay 2
You can read another user's experience of using XPlay at this link: iPod on Mac and Windows

  • Same license for Windows and Mac?

Hi, I just got Production Premium CS6 for Windows, but I'm about to buy a Mac. Will my license work for both? Do I need to uninstall it for Windows when I switch to Mac? Do I need to purchase a completely different license?

    No.
The perpetually licensed Suites (which includes Production Premium) are platform specific: Windows only or Mac only.
The Creative Cloud is multi-platform. The same license works on Windows and/or Mac.
    ccccccory wrote:

If you buy a new full Mac version (most expensive route) then no. You will then have a Windows only license and a Mac only license.
If you choose to "crossgrade" (swap the Windows only license for a Mac only license) then your Windows version will no longer be licensed so you'd uninstall that.
    ccccccory wrote:

Yes if you want to switch your Windows only CS6 to a Mac only CS6 - known as a "crossgrade".

  • Having trouble connecting my ipod to iTunes and mac

Today my ipod decided to stop working altogether and not play anything. Literally, I was listening to a song and the next song never played. Couldn't figure out why, so I came on here and tried the 5 R's.
I want to restore my ipod (because obviously nothing else I did, worked), but I can't even connect it to my MacBook Pro, let alone, see it in itunes. I just want to see of restoring it might actually fix it before I do anything involving the apple store.
There's all sorts of threads about having troubles connecting ipods to PC's, but nothing I could find about connecting them to Macs.
I know for sure the USB wire is fine. I downloaded the new version of itunes and blah blah blah...it's definitely all the ipod, but I can't seem to come up with any other solution than to go to an apple store.
I only bought this within the last year and just recently started using it on a regular basis.
If anyone would like to shed some light on what might've happened, please let me know! I'd be so grateful! Thanks!

Try putting the iPod into Disk Mode
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1363
If that works, connect it to the Mac. See if it is now recognized by the Mac and iTunes. If it is, use Restore to erase the iPod and initialize its software.

Well there are TONS of posts here on the many free applications:
Rip with Mac the Ripper - usually the main title.
Use iSquint or MPEG Streamclip to make MP4 files for iPod.
Some people swear by handbrake but it seems to be out of date. If you want to make the 640X480 better quality size use iSquint TV setting, H264 and the 3rd or 4th quality setting.
Or MPEG Streamclip export to MPEG-4 setting and press the iPod button and select either size.
