I have a new imac and macbook. my itunes library is currently located on my imac and i would like to add this library to my new macbook. I can move the files using an external storage device however does anyone know how i can keep the 2 folders synchronised? when i buy a song from itunes on one computer i would like to update the other.
many thanks in advance

The easiest way, presuming you don't want to have just a single library on an external drive and have both systems access that library, would be with a third-party utility such as Synk.
(I'm not recommending Synk, per se. There are doubtless other utilities that will do the same thing. That's just one I happen to know about).

  • Can I have two identical iTunes Music Folders for my Laptop and my desktop

I have an iMac Flower Power, 20GB of HD running OSX 10.2.8 as my desktop, 2 users, with an 80GB External HD (Firewire). I also have my new MacBook. Right now all my music and pictures are in my MacBook and I have BUps of everything in my external HD. My problem is that when I'm away, my wife can't listen to our music with the iMac 'cause I have all the files (iTunes is using the Library located at my Laptop). My questions are... Can I have 2 identical iTunes Music Folders, one in the XHD and one in my MacBook? How can I do to have both Folders sycronized so when I add music being away with my Laptop, then when I get back home the "home" Folder gets updated with the new music or viceversa? I have an iPod but I want to have the ability to also change the playlists in my iPod when I'm away. I hope this is not too hard to do.

This is what I did: First, I backed up my iTunes Music Folders. Then, I disconnected my xternal HD from my iMac and connected it to my MacBook where I had my iTunes Music Folder. Then, I copied the whole iTunes Music Folder to my xternal HD. Then I ejected the xHD from my MacBook, and connected back it to my iMac and restart. When the iMac was up I sent to the trash all the content of the iTunes Folders in my iMac, there is one in the root directory /Documents/iTunes and another in /Users/Home/Music/iTunes. Be aware that you need to "clean" the iTunes Folder which includes the iTunes Music Folder. Then I went to the xHD and copied the iTunes Library file (the data file) to /Users/Home/Music/iTunes Folder in my iMac, then open iTunes. After doing that you should be able to open your iTunes program in your desktop without having your laptop conected to your network. The only thing is that, in order to keep both libraries identical, you have to update podcasts in both computers every day, and import CD's in both computers every time you add one to your library, if you want to have the same thing in both computers. There might be another way to keep them both syncronized but I'm still searching for it. Make sure after you have your iTunes running, to go to Preferences/Advance, and set up you iTunes Music Folder Location exactly where you want it. I hope this help you guys. Let me know if you need clarification in any of this.

I have2 iTunes Music Folders on the hard drive of my iMac. Each folder is 80+ gigs and there are many duplicates in each folder. Currently iTunes is pulling songs from each folder. I would like to combine the contents of each folder in to one. What is the best way to do this, with out making a complete mess of my iTunes library.

  • How to move from 3 separated itunes music folders into one new hard discs??

So : i bought a new external 6TB thunderbolt hard disc (for extra speed for my huge library) and i copied from 3 other 2TB hard disc into there. I named the sub folder the same like an original. I thought it is enough to determine the new place of each in "media folder locations" and updated.... but its not working
What should i do? How will see the itunes these music folders like an originals??? I dont want to reimporting, because  i dont want to loose  all of my "date added, played etc" informations.
If I'm doing three  partitions with folders, as were the old ones will work?
..or should i rewrite the iTunes Music Library.xml with text editor?
pls help me and thx for answering!!!!!

Best to give the new iPad a different name. I assume you have purchased an iPad 2 or the next generation iPad which is just called "iPad"? If so, you can name the iPad 2 "Kens iPad 2" or "Kens iPad 3" since the new iPad just introduced is the 3rd generation.
The first time you connect your new iPad to iTunes on the computer used for syncing your existing iPad, you will be prompted to transfer the backup for your existing iPad to the new iPad, or set up the new iPad as a new iPad. Both must be followed by a sync with iTunes.
Each device has its own sync preferences with iTunes, which can be the same or different for each device synced with the same iTunes library and computer.

  • Compare two iTunes music folders and eliminate duplicates

Through various Mac upgrades (MBA to Mini-both with Yosemite), as well as HD storage changes, I've ended up with 3-4 music folders with 80-95% correlation among them. They are not exactly alike, however, and I fear losing some good toons if I don't pick a "master" and transfer missing files in other folders into the master, so I end up with all my tunes in one music folder.
Can anyone point me to an AppleScript or other alternative that will allow me to semi-automate my search process? I've been doing it manually, and I've got about 4-5 weekends of part time efforts into it with no end in sight - boring!
Thanks in advance to anyone with more advanced knowledge and experience than I.

What exactly is the scenario? Do you already have multiple media folders but only one iTunes library?  If that is the case, consolidating should get iTunes to put all the files listed in that library in the main active media folder and the others can be deleted (or better yet, put on an archive drive, then delete and see if everything is as it should be).
I use an older iTunes so I can't give you a step-by-step in new iTunes.  Here's some references.  I guess "consolidate" is now called organize.

  • # of Files in iTunes Music Folders Don't Agree with # of Songs

I regularly monitor the properties of my iTunes folders to ensure that my two computers and backup drives all agree. Recently, for the first time ever the number of files in iTunes Music / artist & album folders did not agree with the number of songs in them.
I tracked it down just artist folders starting with 'A'. The additional files were invisible even with 'show hidden files' selected. There were typically two per album folder and they took up storage space. A security scan did not show a problem. I got rid of them by transferring the music files to new artist & album folders and deleting the ones with the mystery files.
Does anyone know what could have caused this? I am running Windows 7 64b and have had to use the Task Manager to close iTunes a couple of times when it froze. Thanks.

+"And i have done a "Consolidate library". Has anyone else done the same check and noticed similar discrepancies? Are there possibly some files in the iTunes folder that do not end up in the iTunes program?"+
Consolidate will not help; it only looks at songs that are already in the library. Run File > Add Folder to Library on your iTunes folder. That will try to pick up any songs that are in the folder but not in the library. It will however skip any file that is not compatible with iTunes.

  • ITunes Music Library and iTunes Music Folders Contain Different File

I recently lost all of the music off of my iPod because of a defective hard drive. I have now reloaded it all and bought an external hard drive to back-up my music (which music I either purchased from iTunes or copied from CDs I own). When I open iTunes Music Library all of my content is present and it is all on my iPod as well. When I look at iTunes Music Files on my C drive - not all of my content is present (for example, only 2 of 3 Billy Joel cds show up). Thus, when I attempt to back-up, I am not capturing everything that is in my iTunes Music Library. Is there a way to synch these, or is there a reason that they are not the same. Again, in the case of the Billy Joel example, all three discs were owned by me so presumably there is no source issue.
    Thanks

Assuming that you're using the external drive strictly for back-up purposes and keeping "working" copies of your music on the C drive, you can use the Advanced menu > Consolidate Library option to make sure that the entire contents of your Music Library is placed in the iTunes Music folder - default location C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\My Documents\My Music\iTunes .

  • How do I determine what folder my library is attached to if I have two iTunes music folders on my computer?

I am trying to backup my music to an external backup disc. The problem is that I have two iTunes folders on my computer. So I need to determine which is the correct folder to backup. Please help.

Run iTunes, select any track, and Get Info on it (File menu). On the Summary page it will show you the path to the file which will tell you the correct folder. This of course presumes that your iTunes library isn't split between two folders, which is entirely possible, so you may wish to check more than a single track.
    Regards.

  • My Itunes Music Folders are a Mess

A bunch of my music in My Itunes library for some reason is divided up outside of their music folder. An Album that contains 16 tracks might only contain one song in that albums folder while the other fifteen tracks are scattered independently in another folder with the same albums name. How can I fix this problem??

as long as iTunes knows of the files (i.e. no "!" next to any), you might want to try consolidating your library.
    (a) go iTunes > preferences > advanced and make sure +iTunes media folder location+ is set correctly. on the same tab, ensure you have put a tick in the boxes next to +keep iTunes media folder organized+ and +copy files to ... when adding to library+. okay out.
    (b) next, file> library > organize library > consolidate files. this will copy all files to the location you specified above (unless the files are already there). if the option to +upgrade to iTunes media organization+ is available, select that as well.

  • Sharing Itunes Music Library among Multiple User Accounts on One Mac

I have 3 user accounts set up on the computer and one itunes account authorized on all 3 user accounts. I have the music library files placed in the shared folders and permissions set up to allow all users to read & write the music. However, only my user account (the main account with admin privileges) is able to access the music unless I log into my user account, run iTunes with sharing enabled, then exit to the login window. Then the other users can access the shared iTunes library. I have preferences setup to use the same library folders.
An earlier version of iTunes used to allow me to do this, and iPhoto still does allow a similar setup with my photo library.
Is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks!

I have an iMac at home with 4 users. I've recently struggled with this and thought I had a working solution ...
I created a new iTunes folder off of root. I then logged in as each user and set the path on their Advanced Tab to /iTunes/iTunes Music/ and dragged and dropped their local iTunes Music folders (~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/) into iTunes. This copies files that aren't there but skips anything that might be in two peoples library.
Then iTunes 8.1 came out and now things are broken. I've rebuilt the index by doing an Add to Library but my Podcasts don't download any more. 8-(

  • How do I remove song files from my iTunes Music Folder that are deleted?

    Hi,
When I deleted unwanted songs from my iTunes Library I selected the option to Keep Files instead of Moving Song to the Recycle Bin. As a result I've now got a load of unwanted music files clogging up my music folders.
So how can I identify music files that are in my iTunes Music Folders but have been deleted from the iTunes Library and then remove them from my hard drive?
    Cheers,
    Andy.
    Sony laptop   Windows XP Pro

Here's a thought, have you added any new items to your library recently?
If you add your iTunes music folder to your library, anything not already in your library will be added.
Now go to your library view and make sure you have the date added column visible. (Right click in the header row to get a list of columns that can be selcted).
Now sort by date added and everying you just added will be together and can be easily identified for deletion.
Note this only applies if files are in the iTunes Music folder, files in other places have to be deleted in Windows Explorer.
PS iT is usually a good idea to make a copy of iTunes Library.itl before experimenting. Copy it from your iTunes folder to somewhere else.

  • ITunes Music not showing up in Library

I have read a number of similar questions on how to restore the music library. Of those I tried none worked. So, can anyone tell me:
How do I recreate the library so that it will pick up all music in iTunes Music folders?
    Thank you,

When I disconnect my ipod from my computer all the music on my ipod dissapeares from itunes[
    THat is working correctly.
The iPod is not connected so iTunes cannot see the iPod.
isnt it supposed to transfer to my library once I disconnect?
It cannot transfer when it is disconnected because it is disconnected.
    Whats wrong with my Ipod/Itunes?
    Dunno?
With the iPod not connected, do you have music in iTunes?
    Does it play?

  • Gettting itunes music/playlist back same way after new install of XP Pro

I did a full image copy of my hard to an external drive, then blew away my hard drive and reinstalled XP Pro. I've installed itunes 9.x and now want to bring back into itunes my music from the saved image on the external drive. Can I bring back my music and or playlists to itunes exactly the same including the "date added" feature? I have tried to do many things people and others suggest such as renaming <itunes library.itl> and other files, moving <itunes music library.xml> to the desktop, doing something with Previous iTunes Libraries. I'm so confused and STUPID!!! I have this <itunes music library.xml> files in both itunes and itunes music folders which are both in doc andsetting\myname\mydocs\mymusic\itunes\itunesmusic.

The four updates where as follows:
    KB839645
    KB841873
    KB840315
    KB842773
One was an update for BITS, one was an ie6/outllook express update, one was xp security update and one was v5 update ( to replace v4).  Was getting the odd blue screen crash and slow load times but have fixed these, caused by services such as  BITS, Workstation etc running when not needed.
Yeah the 9800 pro is not sharing power with anything
The fix for it just now (when xp doesnt load)is to manually hit the reset button, boot into safe mode. shut down again and wait 20 seconds and reboot, if that doesnt work do it again boot in safe mode and delete keyboard restart and boots up.  though with old keyboard sometimes had to do this a few times.  thats why though my keyboard was faulty.
Am now begining to suspect mobo is faulty, which i really hope is not the case as that'll be another faulty MSI part within 6 months.

  • Best way to organize/use multiple Music folders

I have a situation where I want to keep all of my classical music separate from the rest of my music. I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion as to the best way to go about doing this. The way I have done it is this: I created a new user account on my computer, and while logged into that account, I import all of my classical music into iTunes. This creates a separate music folder in the new separate account. Then, in order to access that music from my primary account, I enabled myself to access that folder by giving myself permissions. Is this the best way to go about this? Is there a way to create separate iTunes music folders from within the same user account? If not, is the way that I am sharing the best way to go about it? Would it be better to copy the music folder (or drag it) to the public folder, or shared folder?
Thanks for the input in advance.

    teedoff087,
I've used (and use) the smart playlist option for many things. I would use it in this case, but I have a ton of classical music and I don't want to fill my main music library list with so much classical music. I sometimes listen to music straight from the main music library, and then there is the problem of it playing a rock song and then a classical, etc. Also, it becomes much more difficult to navigate through my main library when there is so much more content in it. I know with the use of smart lists, you can really create well organized music sub libraries, and I do use this feature often. I use it in my non classical library, as well as my separate classical one. I create lists for the different composers, or the era, such as Baroque, Romantic, Classical, etc. Also, Sonatas, Concertos, etc, and even musical instrument. Anyway, I guess my point is that it is just easier to keep the classical music separate. I had all of my music integrated on my last computer, and was often frustrated by it.
Thanks for the suggestion though. Any other thoughts you might have on the topic would be welcome and appreciated.
