Synchronise two computers

Hello.
I have a 20" iMac that I generally use for most of my work. I am thinking about getting a MacBook Air for the times that I need to meet my clients.
What I'd like to know is:
Can I synchronise data between the iMac and the MacBook Air? I don't mean in the .Mac sense, but a total copy of my account from the iMac appearing on the MacBook Air which gets updated whenever I am logged on to my local network.
I work in a PC environment and I know (think) that users on a PC can log-in to the server from any computer and can view all of their documents as though they were on their own machine.
Sounds possible, but how could I do it?
Thanks in advance.

I've been syncing notebook to desktop(s) since 1990. There are quite a few programs that will let you sync data files (word processing and the like) while the two computers are connected. I've been using ChronoSync for the last 5 years or so. Using .Mac or third party programs you can also keep your address book, email, bookmarks and the like synced.

  • Synchronisation two computers with one ipod?!

    Hi @All!
    I have two computers (mac and win) and want my itunes songs on both machines. Actually the ipod works with the win computer. How can I get the songs from the ipod to the mac? How can I transfer/sync these songs over the ipod on both systems.
    Thanks for any reply and hints.

    Probably the easiest way to use an iPod on both Mac and Windows computers is to format the iPod (using iPod Updater) using the PC. This will force your iPod to use the Windows file system (FAT32) which both the Mac and PC can read from and write to without the help of additional software. Of course then all your software updates for the iPod will have to be done on Windows.
    If you need to use a Mac (HFS+) formatted iPod on a Windows PC, you'll need to install some 3rd party software such as XPlay 2.0 (which you can get from MediaFour Software). This will enable your Windows PC to read a Mac-formatted iPod.
    However, please be aware that Apple does not officially support cross platform use.

  • Two apple ids, two computers, one phone#-how to sync messages on on both computers

    Okay apple world, I'm a bit stumped with this one: I have two macbooks, one for work (a 2009 15" macbook pro) and a personal one (2014 13" macbook air) and two apple ids, one for work and one personal one. I also have a 5S iPhone, which I use for both work and personal use. The iPhone has been set up with my personal apple id and my iMessages sync perfectly with my personal macbook air. Now what I would like to do is sync my iMessages through my phone number with my work macbook pro. But when I try to add an additional account, I am only given the option to add a google account or I am told that my (personal) apple id is already in use. Has anyone encountered this issue and do you have any tips on how to trouble shoot through this?

    Sync is about synchronisation to Lightroom Mobile, the iPad/iPhone app, not about synchronising from one computer to another. There isn't really a way to sync two computers automatically, but you can use methods such as File>Export/import as Catalog, Dropbox, or copying through the operating system.

  • Connecting iPod to two computers

    I'm not sure if this is possible, but I was under the impression when I bought my iPod that it could be synchronised with two computers. I have 2 Macs at home and want to also sync with my PC at work. Is there any way to do this?
    Thanks

    You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply. In this mode you can directly access the content of the iPod and play it through iTunes and you can drag and drop whatever you want to the iPod from either library:
    Using iPod with Multiple computers
    Managing content manually on iPod
    iPod 101: Fill 'er Up
    Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device: Safely Disconnect IPod
    One final thing, If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats): How to determine your iPod's disk format
    Macs can read Windows drives so you could restore and format the iPod on a PC. iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac. One proviso is that all future software updates for the iPod would have to be carried out in Windows to maintain the formatting. Alternatively there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, this is one for instance gets good reviews. It's a commercial program so you'll have to purchase a license to use it: XPlay 2

  • IPhoto on two computers

    For reasons of my own, I wish to have identical iPhoto libraries on my two computers: an iMac and a MacBook. These computers are presently linked on an airport network.
    I tried to send the iPhoto library from one machine to the other by ethernet, firewire and then over the network. This proved to be impossible and I was obliged to copy the library to an external firewire drive and pass it from one machine to the other that way.
    The egregious MobileMe somehow got in on the act and so the file that ended up on my laptop was incomplete.
    Can anyone tell me how it could be possible to 'synchronise' one iPhoto library between two computers such that any editing, attribution of titles to photos, albums and events would be preserved after the process.
    Incidentally, MobileMe appears to be an ill thought process and not at all up to the standards that we have come to expect from Apple.
    Hopefully,

    There is no ability to "Sync" two iPhoto libraries
    You can copy one from one computer to another but as soon as you make a change in either they are different again
    MobileMe is in no way involved with this you use only the finder and copy from one computer to the other - they can be connected in any way - Network (wired or wireless), firewire in target mode - however - if you can see one from the other you can use the finder to drag the iPhoto library across

  • Can two computers use the same backup??

    I restored a seperate Macbook pro from the Time machine backup of MY Macbook. So I have two computers operating from the same backup. Is that recommended??

    Yes, it should do. Once you change the name of the computer make sure you reset TM
    See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    When you start the backup it will create a new sparsebundle.. (like a virtual disk that holds the backup on network drives) and you will be able to check that it is correct because it should be a new full backup.
    Then you can do a full backup of one of the machines.. the other machine can continue to use the original backup.

  • Can I have the same library on two computers?

    I would like to run iTunes off two computers..work and home with my same library. Can I? How?
    Thank you much

    I have seen the same info in a few different threads, but I'm still confused. My daughter has ITunes on an older computer, and wants to back up all the info for a new computer. I have ITunes on my computer, and tried to save her files on a flash drive (1 GB) and here's what happened: When I save either or both the .xml or .itl files, and tried to import them to my itunes, I got folders but no songs. When I saved the ITunes Music folder, that gave me the songs, but its more than 1 GB, so I guess I need more flash drives. [However, I was able to import a song that had been downloaded from a CD onto my daughter's computer while the drive was in place on my computer, but when the drive was gone, so was the song......is that always the case?] Do I need to copy the entire ITunes folder (including the .xml, .itl and Music) to the flash drive, and then copy that to the hard drive on the new computer? Help!

  • Computer with CS6 Died on one of two computers. I need to install and activate CS6 Web Premium on another computer. How can I activate it on new computer?

    I have Adobe Creative Suite CS6 installed on two computers. One of the two computers experienced a catastrophic failure. The hard drive is damaged and the computer will not boot. So now I only have access to CS6 on one computer.  I would like to install CS6 on a new computer so that I have two working computers each with an installation of CS6. How do I do this and activate both installations? I tried calling Adobe but the only number I have to troubleshoot problems is for Creative Cloud problems only. Any way to contact a live person at Adobe would be appreciated. Any other solutions would also be appreciated..
    Thank you.

  • Synchronising two different objects

    Hi everyone,
    I am asking for your help while i am writing an example code. I want to learn how to synchronise two differents objects.
    The first class is actually a MIDlet, which has to increase a counter and display it until the second class send a message to the midlet. At this moment, the midlet has to display the message. I am actualy thinking about adding another thread, but lets speak only about the midlet and the calculator :)
    I think there is a problem in my way of thinking, that's why i am asking for your help :
    Here is an extract of my midlet code :
    public class Main extends MIDlet implements CommandListener {
        private static boolean isFromCalculator    = false;
        private static boolean displayUsed = false;
        Command exitCmd = new Command("Exit", Command.EXIT, 1);
        Command pauseCmd = new Command("Pause", Command.OK, 1);
        TextBox tb = new TextBox("Principal", "", 200, 1);
        int cpt = 0;
        Calculator calc = new Calculator();
        public Main()
            calc.start();
            tb.addCommand(exitCmd);
            tb.addCommand(pauseCmd);
            tb.setCommandListener(this);
        public void startApp() {
            process();
        public void pauseApp() {
        public void destroyApp(boolean unconditional) {
        public void process()
            // Tant que l'on a pas d'infos des deux autres threads, on compte !
            while ( !isFromCalculator )
                if ( displayUsed )
                    synchronized(this){
                        try{
                            wait();
                        catch (Exception e)
                            e.printStackTrace();
                display("Principal : " + cpt + "\n", 1);
                cpt++;
            deroute();
        public void display(String message, int time)
            displayUsed = true;
            tb.delete(0, tb.size());
            tb.insert(message, tb.size());
            Display.getDisplay(this).setCurrent(tb);
            synchronized(this)
                try{
                    wait(time);
                catch (Exception e )
                {e.printStackTrace();}
            displayUsed = false;
            notifyAll();
        public void deroute()
            if ( isFromCalculator == true )
                // Manage Calculator message
                display(calc.Message(), 1000);
                isFromCalculator = false;
            process();
        public static void setBoolFromCalculator(boolean b)
            isFromCalculator = b;
        public static boolean isDisplayUsed()
            return displayUsed;
    }And here is my calculator code :
    public class Calculator extends Thread{
        private int iterator;
        private boolean quit;
        public Calculator()
            iterator = 0;
            quit = false;
        public void run()
            while ( !quit )
                iterator++;
                // 100 Boucles maxi
                if ( iterator > 100)
                    quit = true;
                try{
                    sleep(1000);
                catch (InterruptedException e )
                    System.out.println("Calculator sleep error : ");
                    e.printStackTrace();
                if (iterator % 10 == 0)
                    if ( !Main.isDisplayUsed() )
                        synchronized(this)
                            try{
                                wait();
                            catch(Exception e)
                                e.printStackTrace();
                    Main.setBoolFromCalculator(true);

You synchronize methods or blocks of code on objects (or, more properly I suppose, on their locks). This may seem like a petty distinction, but when you say "synchronize objects," it sounds like you think that you're controlling access to an object. That is not the case. If you need further explanation, let me know.

  • I have an Iphone 4S and two computers, can I sync with both computers? When I click on manual manage it says I have to delete songs from phone

    I have two computers, my desktop has much more music on it, but my laptop is 10 times faster.  I originally sync'd my iphone 4s with the desktop to try and keep the hard drive on the laptop from bogging down.  My desktop is on it's way out and I'm trying to sync with the laptop but itunes won't let me.  When I go into my iphone on the computer I check off to manual manage music and when I hit apply it tells me that the iphone can only be sync'd to one computer and requires the contents of the phone being deleted.  Is there anyway around this or am I going to have to delete everything and go through my laptop?

    This is from article on device with multiple computers:
    iPod shuffle and iPhone are intended for use with a single computer. You cannot load music from multiple computers or iTunes libraries onto iPod shuffle and iPhone like you can with other devices.

  • Is it possible to share 1 bluetooth keypad and 1 mouse pad between two computers in target mode?

    Is it possible to share 1 bluetooth keypad and 1 mouse pad between two computers in target mode? Grab a drink and let me tell you my story.
    I purchased two computers... an iMac 27" i7 3.4 16GB RAM and a Mac mini 2.3 i5 8 GB RAM. Both have Thunderbolt capability and are in fact connected by thunderbolt. I have 3 problems...
    1. My Mac mini WILL NOT recognize any bluetooth keyboard. Let me back up for clarification. I set my iMac up first. No problems there. I then went on to set up my mac mini. A couple of interesting things happened concering bluetooth activity. First thing is that the keypad, which was already paired with my iMac wouldn't be recognized by the mac mini, and yet my bluetooth mouse which was paired with my iMac became paired with my mac mini and thus wouldn't be recognized by my iMac anymore. I had to go to my back room and dig out my other bluetooth mouse so that my iMac would at least recognize my second mouse. So now I have two "mice"presently. One for the mac mini, the other for the iMac. Thankfully I also had a USB keypad for my mac mini. My bluetooth keypad is still paired with my iMac but won't pair with my mac mini, which brings me to another question....
    2. CAN 1 KEYPAD AND 1 MOUSE PAIR WITH TWO DIFFERENT COMPUTERS SO THAT WHEN I GO INTO TARGET MODE VIA THUNDERBOLT I CAN USE THE SAME KEYPAD AND MOUSE FOR BOTH COMPUTERS? Anybody have some thoughts on that problem?
    3. WHY IN THE WORLD IS MY MOUSE CURSOR DISAPPEARING EVERYTIME I EXIT TARGET MODE VIA PASSWORD AND COMMAND F2. I'm using target mode to access my mac mini. But when I exit target mode to get back into my iMac I'm looking at my iMac screen but I can't see the mouse pointer! I can move the pointer around even though I can't see it. Wierd. And this has apparently been going on for some time with other users for over a year. I am presently completely up to date on Lion updates. Both systems are running 10.7.4. Does anyone have a solution or heard a rumor of a solution coming soon regarding the invisible mouse cursor "curse". I hate having to restart my iMac everytime I exit out of target mode just so I can get my mouse cursor visible again.
    Food for thought.... Wouldn't it be really cool to have a target mode capability to see your other computers desktops in seperate window screens on your main display. You then could go back and forth from each window by just double clicking or by certain key commands. You could drag and drop from desktop to desktop. Tell me this is coming soon.
    Thanks

  • Can two computers use same iTunes library on a network drive?

    Can two computers use directly (rather than share) the same iTunes library on a network drive?
    My media library is on a network drive attached to my Airport Extreme. Right now I share the library with my desktop Mac. I can share fine, but I would like to be able to add, delete, and make other changes in the media library from both computers. The two computers would not be accessing the library at the same time as I am the sole user of both.

    I appreciate your input and I think you're right about this being impossible. But just to clarify, you say I can't "have multiple machines accessing the same music files from a shared location." I can have multiple machines accessing the same music files from a shared location--I just can't have them accessing the same music files simultaneously--which may have been what you meant. For my situation, I think it will be less work to just quit iTunes on my server when I want to run it on my client (using Chicken of the VNC). It's not ideal, but it's less time-consuming than periodically syncing three computers.
    Again, thanks for the input.

  • Can two computers share same ITunes library over Airdisk?

    Hi all,
    I have a Macbook and a PowerPC G5 and a Drobo (external hard drive) hooked up to my AEBS with only ITunes music stored on it.
    I want to be able to edit and browse my ITunes library from both my G5 (which I can already do) and my MacBook (which I can't). When I try to change my ITunes library location from within my MacBook, nothing shows up. It's a blank library, even though I can edit and browse the Drobo (as an Airdisk) through the finder. How can I edit and browse my ITunes library from my Macbook if my G5 is also using the same library? Two more quick points...
    1) I have tried the "sharing" feature and don't want to use it. It doesn't allow editing of my library and won't show cover art.
    2) The above situation happens whether my G5 ITunes is open or closed.
    Thanks everybody for your help.

    They aren't using a single library. Each computer is using its own copy and you have two sets of library files.  It can certainly be done that way but if between copy sessions you edit a bit of each library then it is a bit of a muddle trying to make sure your versions are synchronized with each other.  For example, ratings are stored only in the .itl file, so if you rate a song on your second computer it will get lost the next time you copy over from your first.

  • Can two computers share one iTunes library?

    I am trying to map out a new plan for how we store and play music via iTunes at home. Currently, our music is stored on a windows PC and played via iTunes and an airport express.  I recently bought a new macbook and am considering an airport extreme with the hope that I can store the music on a hard drive attached to the airport extreme and play music from either computer.  Can the two computers share one library? I already have home sharing turned on and can access my library from the macbook, but if possible, I would prefer having the hard drive separate of the desktop.  Any reason this won't work?
    Thanks!
