Synchronization issue (apps and contacts affected)

I have a Verizon iPhone 4, and my understanding has been that iTunes doesn’t back up contacts. So I tried to back up my contacts to my Google account by going to devices > info > synch contacts with google contacts. I hadn't changed any settings for synching apps, I hadn't even gone to that tab, but iTunes decided to randomly start removing apps from my phone. Can anyone explain why this might've happened? Is it because I forgot to “transfer purchases” beforehand?  I don’t understand what synching contacts had to do with the third party apps, though.
Next I re-synched the apps and they went back on the phone in a different order, but I unchecked the “sync contacts” and “sync apps”options so that it didn’t automatically sync my Google contacts every time.That actually wiped out ALL the contacts on my phone.  What can I do to avoid deleting all my phone contacts and apps but setting it so that it won’t automatically sync them everytime I hook up my phone to iTunes?  My intention with this whole thing was just to back up the contacts the one time and take out the Google account afterwards. I didn't want to change any sync settings, but now I feel like I am stuck with these settings or else I will delete everything again.
If anyone can offer any insight, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I have the same problem with Active Sync.
At the moment I have only 4 contacts out of the 1500+ I normally have. And no idea how to initiate the sync. I need to make a call, but cannot make it because the contact does not exist anymore.
This happened to me a few times already. Previously I tried to restart the device, but still it takes hours before the contacts have been synced.

    No.  In fact, it is possible to uninstall iTunes and then re-install iTunes without losing any content.
    Removing, updating, and repairing the application has no affect on the media stored on the system.

    You are talking about the menu bar of Itunes, right?
    Yes. With iTunes open the menu bar is at the top of your screen.
    where exactly is the Store/synck you iphone option?
    After you authorize the computer connect your iPhone then follow the instructions here > iOS: How to transfer or sync content to your computer
    When you are done transferring the data to the desktop, right or control click the iPhone under Devices left side of the iTunes window then click Back Up.
    That way you will have a backup just in case you need to restore your iPhone.

    I did a restore from backup but that did not change anything.
    I can see my apps in iTunes - it is like the update got some apps but not all, no contacts.
    Total waste of my Friday. 
    What steps can I take to bring the phone back.

    I got my contacts back by doing another restore!  Relief..
    But only a very few odd apps are showing up on the 3GS
    Any suggestions?

    My iPhoto app and Contacts list have disappeared from both my desktop and my Time Machine ( recently restored my internal harddrive from external HD ).
    1)  Can I select just iPhoto for installation from the system disk ?
    2)  I can highlight my complete Contacts list from several weeks ago in Time Machine, but when restored to today, the desired target  ( Contacts ) is grayed out. Do I need to create a temporary "Contacts*" app to be later renamed without a distinctive character ? I have created "Contacts" folder, which is unrecognized by Mail.
    Any guidance would be appreciated.

    The iPhoto app needs to be reinstalled form its original source - either the restore disks that came with yoru computer, the pruchased iLife upgrade disks or the App store

    Use your backup copy of your old computer to put everything on your new computer, then sync the iphone to that comptuer.

    Is this a new iPhone?
    If so, when connecting a new iPhone to iTunes for the first time that has been used to sync with another iPhone or iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device to the new iPhone, or set up the new iPhone as a new iPhone.
    If you don't want to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device, select set up as a new iPhone. No existing data or settings will be erased or changed when selecting as a new iPhone. Not that difficult or difficult at all.

    Have recently downloaded iOS5 on iPhone 4, using Vodafone New Zealand Carrier.  I have sync and power off the phone several times.  I cannot ADD a new contact, I cannot EDIT a contact.  The Calendar, is also an issue, with not being able to add an event, reminder on any given day, the + sign has disappeared off both Contacts and Calendar
    Anyone else having this issue? :-(

    I have found the way for it to work, after checking my iCloud email, thinking that may have something to do with it.  Go into your Settings, iCloud and turn on Calendar and Contacts, then the + sign appears in both :-).  Let me know how you get on, and if it works for you too :-)
