Synchronize mail between computers

Is there a way to synchronize mail between my main computer and my laptop. So If I read messages on one computer, the other will also appear as if I read it. Both computers are running latest OS. Thanks for any help.

Comcast does not provide an IMAP type account - you can access your Comcast email account as a POP type account only.
Is your old Mac running Tiger? If not, you can't transfer the Mail folder from a Mac running Jaguar or Panther to a Mac running Tiger since the mailbox format used by Tiger Mail is significantly different than the mailbox format used by Jaguar and Panther Mail.
If both Macs are running Tiger, you need to transfer the Mail folder and the Mail.app preference file from the old Mac to the new.
I used the Migration Assistant to transfer everything from a Mac running Tiger to a new Mac with Tiger pre-installed without any problems but the Migration Assistant should have worked regardless.
If both Macs are connected in some fashion, you can use the Import Mailboxes feature with the Mail.app on the new Mac to import all mailboxes from the Mail folder on the old Mac.
This link includes some basic information on the differences between an IMAP and POP type account.
http://www.imap.org/
An IMAP type account is beneficial when accessing the same account with an email client on multiple computers. In addition to the account's Inbox mailbox, you can also store Drafts, Sent, Trash and Junk messages on the server with the email client on multiple computers so all account mailboxes/messages stored on the server are kept synchronized with the server by the email client used on each computer. When a received message is marked as read with the email client used on one computer, the message will be marked as read when the account is checked with the email client used on a different computer. You can also create additional server stored mailboxes to sort/store selected messages by category on the server and all messages in any user created server stored messages will be available and kept synchronized with the email client used on each computer.
None of this is available with a POP type account which is primarily designed to be accessed with one computer only.
An Apple .Mac account can be accessed as an IMAP or POP type account but most internet service providers such as Comcast support POP type accounts only.

  • Stop synchronize Mail between Mac's

    Hi everyone,
last holidays,  I decided to deleted some mails on my iPhone or iPad... only ! because it took too much room on my phone memory.
But when I came back home, and decided to work on my macbook, I discovered that all my mails were deleted too ?
I realized that all my MAC stuff were synchronized !
Now my question is : how can I do to STOP the synchronization between all my Mac goods ?
You certainly understood : I want to keep everything on my macbook , even if I delete things in my iPhone and iPad.
    Answers ?  Ideas ?
    Thanks to everyone.

You'll need to use an email system that does not sync (so not iCloud, or Gmail, or most of the email systems in existence). Look for a provider who can give you a POP account.

  • Sync Mail Between Computers

I am running 2 macs. I have one problem...is there any way that I can have my mail sync on both computers without .mac ... It can be quite a pain having to check then delete the mail on one computer, and then come on my other computer and have to delete all the same messages. Again, I would not like to have to subscribe to .mac ... I know it is a great program from mac, but the fees can be a pain, so if there is any way to do this, I would thank you!!!!
    Thank You.

    Hi.
With .Mac mail, it allows you to run it as a IMAP mail, which stores everything on the mail server.
That is the kind of mail you probably looking for, to "sync" between two or more macs, you basically access your entire mail account, which is on a mail server, via an email program like Mail or Entourage.
So if you do not wish to subscribe to .Mac, then you would have to look for another mail account, that supports IMAP.
Incidently, if you are looking for a free email account, and don't mind accessing it fromt the web, (i.e. web-based mail) then there are a lot for you to choose from: GMail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail
    Cheers

  • Moving Mac mail between computers

    Hi!
As I am considering switching from Entourage to Mac OSX Mail, I'm pondering this question: is it easy to move the e-mail archive from one machine to the other? In Entourage it all sits in Microsoft User Data/Office 2008 Identities. Where does it all sit in OSX? Info would be appreciated... Thanks!
    Rad

    Tony,
    Haha! Thanks!
Now, since you seem to know this stuff, more help needed...
I created my elaborate mail setup on my MacPro, all tweaked and working (I confess: 14 different IMAP email accounts spread between 3 domains on my server. I just like things a precisely certain way, and emails to land in proper mailboxes).
I was ready to move all this to its proper destination, which is my MacBook Pro laptop - so I copied the contents of Users/Rad/Library/Mail/.. to the same folder on the laptop, rebooted everything, and... to make a story short, that whole setup DID NOT transfer. There is some chaotic structure with some bits and pieces, but definitely not a clean transfer.
Then I tried archiving mailboxes and importing them on the laptop, but in that case none of the actual IMAP account settings transferred to the Mail app.
So - any ideas on how to just move the whole mail setup cleanly from one machine to the other? Or it is not possible, and I will have to manually retype all the account settings again?
Your help graciously appreciated again! I will post this separately on the forum too...
    Best,
    Rad

  • Is it possible to synchronize mail between all iOS and OS devices?

I am running an iPhone 5 and iPads 3 & 4 with iOS 8.1 plus 2 MacBook Pros, and 3 (4th ordered) Mac minis with OS Yosemite 10.10. I also use an iPhone 4 and iPad 1 with older iOS software but mail is not important on them. I am the only user of these devices (reason = personal convenience).
I have mail accounts with Hotmail, Live, iCloud, Yahoo and Centurylink.
My problem is that because the mail is not synchronized (deleting an email on one device does not delete it from other devices or from the server) I now have up to and over 10,000 accumulated emails on various devices. I don't mind keeping all my old emails IF I could eliminate all the emails I choose to delete from any of the devices.
The result is that email has become unmanageable for me.
I had very high hopes that Apple would fix this with Yosemite and iOS 8.1 but that does not appear to be the case.
I suppose I could work around it by always going to Hotmail, Live, Yahoo, Centurylink etc. on the internet and not using iOS and OS mail but that seems a dumb way to have to do it.
Every time I buy a new iOS or OS device (like the new mini) it compounds the problem with yet another disorganized mail mess.
There is so much spam, phishing, data mining etc. going on that I use the multiple email accounts to pre-filter anticipated email responses. As an example I need a Yahoo account to use Yahoo but I know almost all Yahoo mail is spam so I can ignore it most of the time.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Thank you for your reply.
I am somewhat new to iOS and OS having grown up with DOS and Windows. I am not familiar with IMAP and iCloud and I am not even sure which types of servers my various emails use.
The problem I would anticipate with iCloud is that (I assume) it would limit my access to data (including mail) on the iCloud to when I happen to be logged onto the internet. I also assume(?) that large files (photos etc.) would require some time to download whenever I wish to access them from whichever device I happen to be using (I hope I am wrong about this).
I have kept my devices to 500gb - 1TB for OS and 32gb - 128gb for iOS but since I have pretty slow WiFi (shared with DirecTV Whole Home and Netflix streaming) it is my impression that iCloud might be quite limited due to data transfer times.
Perhaps a factor would be that I have 2 DSL lines and my main DSL line is connected to two wireless routers (to also provide WiFi in a metal building that blocks WiFi and Cellular signals)
I may be totally wrong in my assumptions regarding iCloud. My mail is not so urgent that I need access to it instantly and I could wait until I had internet access or I can get it on my iPhone. My main concern with iCloud would be my data files (Word, Pages, Excel, Numbers etc.).
On the other hand, if I wanted to keep my 10,000 emails that would take up a lot of iCloud memory and I don't know how to measure how much storage it would take or how to move Hotmail or even iCloud mail to iCloud.
It may take me some time to figure this out.

  • Does MobileMe sync e-mail messages or only the account settings between computers?

Does MobileMe actually sync e-mail messages between computers or only the account settings?

Here's a scenario:  We have an iPhone, an iMac, and a MacBook Plus that we want to sync with MobileMe. So let's say that we check our e-mail using the iMac tomorrow. We save some new messages and delete the rest. Does MobileMe then sync (i.e. save the same messages and delete the rest on the iPhone and the MacBook Plus)? Or do we need to go through the same process with the iPhone and the MacBook Plus as we did on the iMac?
Also, does MobileMe sync addresses, favorites, documents, etc.?
If you delete a message on the iMac it would also automatically delete that message on the iPhone and MacBook. If you send a message from the iPhone it would appear in the sent messages folder on the MacBook. If you receive a message on the MacBook and read it then it would appear as read on the iMac, etc.
Yes, MobileMe will sync your address book, Safari bookmarks and documents. However it's a little trickier with the documents as it involves localizing your iDisk. I'm personally not a huge fan of the tech that Apple uses for the iDisk (WebDAV) and I feel there are some better solutions out there but it will get the job done.
It's important to add that Apple offers a 60-day, no obligation, trial of MobileMe for you to try out and see if the features are worth it for $99/year.

  • Problem syncing Mail between two computers

I know this is a well worn topic and I've read the posts on syncing mail between two computers. Overall, I've gotten it to work pretty well. Whenever I move from one computer to another, I copy my ~/Library/Mail folder to my thumbdrive and sync it w/ the same folder on my other computer before I fire up Mail on it.
But here's the problem: I rebuilt the "sent" mailbox on one of my computers (let's call it computer A). This apparently gives new message numbers to the messages. Things worked great on computer A after that.
Then I synced the mailbox with my other computer, computer B. On computer B, the change in mailbox numbers apparently was not recognized. Every message in the "sent" folder gave me the message that I needed to go online and download the message. So I rebuilt the "sent" mailbox on computer B. Things then worked great.
Then I synced back with computer A and the same thing happened. Every message in the sent folder gave me the "download from server message."
It seems that I'm in some sort of infinite loop. The rebuild on one computer is not recognized by the other computer. Clearly, there is some file somewhere that contains info that's not being conveyed when I sync the ~/Library/Mail folder.
    Any suggestions??

That is interesting. To that effect I have thrown together this Applescript:
(CAUTION... do not run this script, experimental only!
    set flashDrive to "FLASH"
tell application "System Events" to exists process "Mail.app"
if the result is true then tell application "Mail" to quit
-- copy files to mounted disk
    do shell script "rm -r /Volumes/" & flashDrive & "/Mail/"
    do shell script "cp -r ~/Library/Mail /Volumes/" & flashDrive & "/"
    do shell script "cp ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist /Volumes/" & flashDrive & "/Mail/"
    --copy files to userfolder
do shell script "rm -r ~/Library/Mail"
    do shell script "cp -r /Volumes/" & flashDrive & "/Mail ~/Library/"
    do shell script "cp /Volumes/" & flashDrive & "/Mail/com.apple.mail.plist ~/Library/Preferences/"
Problem is, I don't know how to tell the script which version of mail data is older or newer. If you know of such a way let me know and I'll script it in, otherwise the user is stuck with manually choosing what to copy to where.
And as we all know, any user choices are error-prone.

  • Stored passwords not syncing between computers.

I'm trying to use Firefox to Syncronize data between computers. It was working, but somewhere along the way it has stopped. I now have three computers, of which I'm trying to have two of them synced together. I thought that the issue was account related, so I deleted my original account & had to create a new one (with a different e-mail address - I'd like to change that back if possible). Anyhow, now it seems as if bookmarks are synced OK, but my saved passwords are not. Given that I can't tell what the status is of a sync, it is hard for me to tell where the process is.
So, I have one computer (a Macbook) with passwords on it that I am syncing and I have another (a new Dell Laptop), that I would like to have updated.
What do I need to do to get my passwords synchronized?
    Thank you,
    Paul

Make sure that you are forcing syncing by pressing Sync Now in your computers and allow some time (several minutes) to have all the information sent to the server and down from the server. If this still doesn't work, follow the steps in this blogpost to create a bug:
    https://philikon.wordpress.com/2011/06/13/how-to-file-a-good-sync-bug/
This would be really helpful. I've seen other people having issues with passwords but I'm unable to replicate it.

  • Synchronizing Mail between iMac and Powerbook; Both 10.4.6

Is there a way to get my e-mail account (quite large) synchronized between my 2 Macs?
    Thanks very much!

For IMAP or .Mac accounts, yes -- that's what IMAP was designed for. For POP accounts, no, but you can get close:

  • How to synch app tab between computers

How do I get my pinned app tabs to synch between computers?

This is what the Adobe help file says about syncing site settings: (http://helpx.adobe.com/dreamweaver/using/synchronizing-dreamweaver-settings-creative-cloud .html)
Site settings: All site settings (except username and password) are synchronized between computers running on the same operating system. username and password cannot be synchronized.
The path and name of the local site folder is synchronized if a folder with the same name exists in the same path.
If a site does not exist on a machine, Dreamweaver creates a new site folder in the default location and all the paths are relative to this folder. You can change this path at any point in time. For all subsequent synchronizations, only the changes in the site folder are synchronized.
The only point here I can see thats might be relevant is "running on the same operating system". Are your two installs of DW CC on the same operating system?

  • Synch itunes between computers

Is it possible to synchronize itunes between two computers? I have a one computer which is backuped to an external drive. On my MacBook, I have some different songs including my wife's ringtone for my iPhone. If I just replace the file on my MacBook, I will erase said songs and ringtone. Is there a solution other than transferring one song and ringtone at a time?

    No idea?
Assuming that I have the same content/songs on both pc and mac how can I keep both libraries up to date? I am not talking about synchronizing the music files but rather their settings and ratings. When I listen to the music on my pc the counter of played titles will increase. When I switch between pc and mac (and then mac and pc) how can I transfer these attributes?

Add another e-mail account to your messages, so people could reach you on that e-mail from messages. As soon as you are online (if you have wifi only iPad) you are able to send and receive messages. i.e. your son can send you a messages from his iPhone addressing it to your (that additional) e-mail address.

  • Sync Mail between multiple devices

Can anyone help? I own a MacBook Pro, an iMac, an iPhone, and iPad. I have managed to sync mail between the iPhone and the iPad using Microsoft exchange, so that if I delete an e-mail on the phone or the iPad then it is deleted on the other.
However I can't sync the two computers in the same way, can anyone help and tell me how to sync Mail across all 4 units?
(I used Exchange because the e-mail account is a Hotmail account and I was told, that's the only way I can do it).
    Regards and thanks in advance.
    Colin

Microsoft publish the settings needed for Hotmail Imap, they work, use them.
    They are:
    For incoming connections:
    Server address: "imap-mail.outlook.com"
    Server port: "993"
    Encryption type: "SSL"
    For outgoing connections:
    Server address: "smtp-mail.outlook.com"
    Server port: "587"
Encryption type: "TLS" ("SSL" can be used if TLS is not an option)

  • ITunes Library shared between computers?

I have an iMac (OSX Lion) with two user accounts that are both sharing the same iTunes Library.  We now have a Macbook Air with the same user accounts.  The Macbook Air obviously does not have the same hard drive space and I therefore did not choose to migrate the library to the Air...What is the best way for each user to access the shared iTunes folder from the iMac?  I would like to do this while on the same LAN as well as remotely if possible.
I assume that simply setting iTunes up for "Sharing" will handle the local area question, but what about while we are away from home?  I assume that iCloud with iTunes Match would be the only answer?

Rented movies cannot be shared between computers. They can only exist on a single device at a time, and can only be moved from a computer to a player such as an iPod, iPhone or Apple TV. You cannot move a rental from one computer to another.
And yes, actually they do say that, in the Rentals FAQ, among other places.
