Synchronize sigle item in webform possible or not?

Hi All,
I have a program that uses a remote scale for weighing products. While the scale is busy i need to show a message in a field on the form that shows the current status off the scale (e.g. 'waiting for scale', 'scale ready', etc). I a 6i form this works perfectly using synchronize to update the status in the field, but when using forms 10G the synchronize slows down the performance off the form to a level that is not acceptable.
Is there any way to synchronize just this 1 field without using the standard synchronize functionality. Maybe a java bean or some other plug-in could help me solve this problem.

The tcp connection is hosted by the client. But this should not matter in my opinion (or do i assume wrong). The problem lies in the loop where the processing is done
We don't use the webutil library in that program, we use the utl_tcp.open_connection.
For testing purpose, i tried using a button to show text while in the loop. I use a second button to start the loop:

set_item_property('BLOCK.SHOW',label,'counter='||counter);
Select * from table in the database to be able to see the changed label;
counter := counter + 1;
exit when counter > 3;
end loop;
end;
The select could be seen as the processing done by the scale. Without using a synchronize the text on the button will not be modified while in the loop. The only label change shown will be 'counter=3'.
