Synchronize Two Cameras

Hi,
I am an novice video guy. I am supposed to video a ballet using two cameras; one pan and one close-up. I would like some sort of trick to help me synchronize the two cameras so that I can easily edit the close-up video into the wide-angle shots. I thought of a flash prior to the beginning of the dance so that I can line up the video of both cameras during editing but flash photography is forbidden.
There must be an established technique but I can't seem to find it.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Tom's suggestion of a clapperboard or a handclap is probably your best bet. Just keep those cameras running once they are started. If you do so, after you capture, you will have 2 long clips (one from each camera) that you can put on the timeline & align once. After you have them aligned in the timeline, you should unlink the audio tracks from the video tracks, and then you can do your video cutting in the timeline and the audio can remain sync'd with both video tracks throughout.
If you start/stop either camera, you will end up with multiple clips, each of which will have to be aligned individually on the timeline - laboriously, one by one - and I can assure you that is a real b**.
The alternative is either a video mixer where you do your transitions in real time (as if you were broadcasting live) and feed them to a single recording deck or some pretty expensive equipment to sync audio & video between the two cameras.

  • How to synchronize two USB webcams (each at 30fps) for a combined 60fps video? Three for 90fps?

    Hello All,
    Multiple-Camera Lab Application: How-To?
Exploring a loose-synchronization for cameras, low resolution, B&W=gray video capture, that may require up to 200fps, laboratory application.
Frames would be recorded serially, from 1_frame/10msec at 100fps to 1_frame/5msec at 200fps.
Consecutive frame-to-frame intervals do not need to be fixed at 10msec, they may vary a lot +/-50%, are non-critical.
Video recording may last up to 1_minute maximum real time (no sound recording needed at any time).
Specs say a generic USB2.0 webcam can record up to 30fps.
    And USB2.0 is a half-duplex serial protocol.
Using two or more webcams in parallel, focused on the same scene, may yield a composite video capture at multiples of 30fps.And much lower price than a single dedicated high speed camera.
Ultimately all frames have to be assembled -in sequence- into one big video recording.
Any comments, any ideas? Did anyone try this?
    Thank you,
    Dan

    Hi,
Sorry I am not much help about this. Creative webcams aren't built to work that way.

  • How to synchronize video camera with logic for recording?

    Hi guys,
I have a Sony VX 2000 and logic pro.
I'd like to do a multitrack audio recording of a musical theatre performance and simultaneously record video with two cameras.
I want to record the sound into logic pro, that way I can mix the sound later (multitrack audio).
At the same time I want to record video with the cameras.
There may be 100 takes or more....
What is the best way to synchronize logic with the video recording?
I don't want to synchronize each audio take with each video take later, there must be an easiser way!
Is it possible to start recording of video and audio at exact the same time?
Do I need any additional hardware?
    Any feedback highly appreciated!
    Thanks Eddie

Have the drummer make a 2 pop (click) at the beginning of every take.
Set the camera to 16 bit audio and you can import the camera audio into Logic.
Record multitrack into Logic at the same time.
You can align the takes to the audible click.
Sorry, It's the only thing I can think of,
without having very expensive externally synced cameras.
Logic doesn't record video, it plays it back.
So making some type of slate is the way to go.
It will be a pain to manually align all that stuff.

  • Can I edit from two camera angles?

    Hello
I'm an iMovie lover struggling with Final Cut Express! I want to use two camera's to shoot some interviews, is there an easy way to edit these two pieces of the same footage (different angles) in Final Cut Express?
    Cheers
    Derek

    Hi
Yes - but not as easy as in FinalCut Pro (old one e.g. 6) where there is a multicamera function.
    If FCE - I do
    • Put Camera one on Video Track one in TimeLine
    • Put Camera two on Video Track two
    • Select track one clip
    - by double click it and then in Viewer turn on Image + Wireframe and
    - resize it to 50% and
    - move it to a corner e.g. top left one.
    • Same with track two - but up to the right
    • Now move one track so that it synchronize with the other one. You can use the audio Wave-form to do this - I use a flash-light from a Camera to get one white frame on both cameras to set them exactly right.
    • Now by changing the transparency of the track two (pen tool and set to show transp.-line) one can select what Camera to view.
    • When all's done - Just scale back and center picture
    And Done

  • Can PE3 synchronize two video sources for post edit AB roll?

In PE3, is there a way to synchronize two digital video files (AVI) to create a AB roll type post edit.  My two captured video files seem to have different frame speeds or frame durations.  How do I align and frame match 2 video sources?  The situation is a 2 camera shoot.  How to best create an AB roll edit of the 2 videos sources with audio from one video file as the common element?

    Wes,
Armed with Steve's article, you should be able to do what you want.
I've got a question, and maybe a suggestion to address the frame-rate problem early on, to help solve that problem without a lot of fiddeling. What are the two frame-rates? G-Spot will tell you exactly, if you can not find this in Properties. If the source files are DV-AVI, they should be of the exact same frame-rate to begin with, but if one is off a bit, I'd convert the non-DVD spec one to match. First place I'd try this would be to simply Interpret Footage in the Project Panel. If that does not work, then Windows Movie Maker can do this for you, or you can use other conversion tools to get them to match. I use DigitalMedia Converter, but it's not freeware. Getting the two sources into perfect sync in the beginning will go a very long way to achieving success.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[Caveat] I do not have PE3, only PE4, but I think that this will apply to your version.
[Edit] After reading Steve's article, the one thing that I would do (after establishing sync) to assist me in editing multi-camera would be to set the Video Track Display to show all "frames" and the expand the height of each of the two Video Tracks (VT's), so that they occupy most of the vertical real estate in the Timeline. Then, I'd zoom in on the horizontal display of the Timeline, so that I could see fairly clearly, each frame. This basically makes the Timeline like a detailed Sceneline, but keeps you in Timeline Mode. Because you do not have the Multi-camera Mode that PrPro does, you will not be getting anything but your upper Video Track footage in the Program Monitor. You will be viewing the footage ON the Timeline. This WILL necessitate a lot of horizontal scrolling on the Timeline, but is doable. Then, when you wish to be using the footage from VT1, you will cut out (Sissors Tool) the overlaying footage from VT2. I'd personally arrange my main footage (like the main Audio Track in Steve's article) on VT1, and my "cutaway" camera's footage on VT2. As VT2 takes prescedence over VT1, you can leave VT1's footage pretty much alone, and just cut the footage on VT2. I would use Cross-dissolves on the Head and Tail of the the "cut" Clips on VT2. Remember that if you use these, you will want to make sure that the cut has come where you want the scene on VT2 to absolutely start, or end. The Duration of the Cross-dissolves will determine when the scene either becomes 100% visible (Head), or 100% invisible (Tail). Also, remember that Dip-to-Black on VT2 takes the image on VT1 to black, hence my use of Cross-dissolves.
Using this method, also allows one to do a bit of nudging of the Clips (cut from the original) on VT2, to compensate from any loss of sync. Though you could possibly use this to adjust for the differences in framerate, I'd still try to get the footage as exact, as is possible, to start - a lot less work that way. Also, once the "holes" have been cut into the footage on VT2, you can start to use the Program Monitor much more.
As Steve points out, PrPro makes it easier by locking Tracks and a Multi-camera dual monitor, when in Multi-camera Mode.
This was exactly how we did it with film, except that we had to splice in black leader, where the cuts were made, and could not keep our VT1 footage intact, as we can with an NLE and video. Since we were dealing with sprocket holes, we had spiked gears (sprockets)  on a "sync block" and once we'd get the alignment right, would physically flip down a guide, that would "lock" the film to those two rolls of film to the sync block. Even though it sounds tough, when you read it, it's really not, and so very much easier, than it was with film.

  • On holidays we took pictures with two cameras and an iPad. I put everithing on my PC. Rearranged them by date, time and or subject putting a number in front of the picture name. I synchronised with my iPad and my pictures show in misselaneous order. Help

We took pictures during oue holidays with two cameras and an iPad. I put all the pictures on my PC and reorganized them by date, time and/or subject, By putting a number in front of the picture name. Then I synced with my iPad. All the pictures show in a misselaneous order. What went or did I wrong?

You did nothing wrong, but the photo app puts stuff in chronological order.
You can look for another app. Afraid I don't have one to suggest, but I do understand that other apps will sort photos differently.

  • Two cameras at the same time Lab view (NI MAX)

I have two similar Point Grey Firefly MV cameras. I need to use them simultaneously in LabVIEW, but NI MAX only detects one at the same time (the two cameras are detected properly separately). I think that NI MAX identifies both camera as the same camera, but I dont know how to change the name of one of those cameras, or maybe change the serial number. Also NI MAX gives the same serial number to both of them. I would apreciate your help
    Thank you.

    Hi Aurelio,
This is a commom issue for USB Cameras. Once IMAQdx calls the camera driver to acquire image, if the camera driver cannot acquire from 2 cameras, IMAQdx cannot acquire from 2 cameras too.
You can ask to camera vendor about how the camera driver works.

If somebody has any idea that will help me a lot.
    Thanks and regards
    Srikant

Of corse I have an idea, but not good!
If you know the database stucture then copy data from one to another.
Open 2 connections: one to source and one to dest.
    And:
String sql = "SELCET * from mytable1";// from source
    string sql2;
    Statement st1 = connSrc.createStatement();
    Statement st2 = connDest.createStatement();
    ResultSet rs = st1.executeQuerry(sql);
    while(rs.next()){
    sql2 = "INSERT INTO mytable1 ('field1', 'filed2') VALUES ("+
    "'"+rs.get(filed1")+"',"+
    "'"+rs.get(filed2')+"'"+
    st2.executeUpdate(sql2);
// the destination was cleared before this: DELETE FROM mytable1 WHERE 1
This is a mysql sample without processing the errors.

  • Is it possible to synchronize two OEM DAQpad-6016's?

I’m currently using several 6030E DAQ cards and synchronizing the gathered DAQ samples by using the RSTI cable/connection. Now I need to make this process mobile using a laptop and have selected two OEM DAQpad-6016’s. Is there anyway to synchronize two cards DAQ samples? I found something in the manual which leads me to believe this isn’t possible. “DAQCard and DAQPad devices do not interface to the RTSI bus. These devices can only directly use their own internal 20MHz timebase as the primary frequency source”
I though perhaps someone might have some thought's on how to do this or perhaps at least control the sample difference with a fixed delta.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Dave Werner

    Hello Dave,
You can try routing the AI sample clock of one DAQpad out to a PFI line, wiring that PFI line to a PFI line on the second DAQpad and configure the second DAQpad to use an external clock. I think that the statement, "These devices can only directly use their own internal 20MHz timebase as the primary frequency source" might be a little misleading. I would go ahead an try to route out the sample clock to see if you can share one sample clock between the two DAQpads.

  • How can I get two cameras to aquire at the same time rather than one after the other

I've got (2) PCI-1428 cards, Two Uniq Vision cameras with power supplies, cameralink cables, and IMAQ-D6804 cables. Both cameras are being triggered by the same switch, but they are not grabbing images at the same time. Right now it is triggering one camera as desired, but the other doesn't aquire until after the time-sensitive event. On the next test, the two camera will trade these roles. I am using 2 cards, so they should acquire at the same time. How do I change it so that they grab images at the same time? Thank you for your help.
                                                                  Deater

    Hi Deater,
Thank  you for your post.  Triggering from two cameras at the same time may be a little trickey, but it can be done.  There are multiple ways to tackle this problem.  If you have a RTSI cable, you can RTSI the two PCI boards together internally to lock them in HW.  You should also be able to use the triggering line on each board.
One of the best methods for triggering multiple boards is called GenLocking.  The following Developer Zone page describes GenLocking more fully and has several examples to help you out: http://zone.ni.com/devzone/conceptd.nsf/webmain/a387b5c0ac6f6f4e86256c87005fcddf.
The "HL Grab with two boards.vi" shipping example is also a good example of the code needed to trigger two individual boards in LV.  I found a similar post that may be of some help as well: http://forums.ni.com/ni/board/message?board.id=230&message.id=2691&requireLogin=False
    Hope this helps!

  • Editing from a two-camera shoot

I shot a classical concert with two cameras. I've imported both tapes into my project. I want to use the closest camera for the soundtrack and cut-aways and the far camera for most of the video. Can anyone advise me on the easiest way to do this? I need to import the whole of the soundtrack tape (minus top and tail). Is replacing the video with footage from the second tape whilst keeping the original audio track uninterrupted straight forward?

only way to acomplish your task with iM ...
but.. I assume, you stumble soon into sync problems.. due to lack of two video timelines, it is very hard to find the right 'in' in your 2nd video ..
I would really susggest investment of 200$ and some time learning into FinalCutExpress.. (ok, FCpro has 'real' multicam support, but .. FCE does it)
the two/many tracks simultanously makes it much easier...

  • How can I adjust video from two cameras that are out of sync?

Hi - I've just recorded someone speaking on two cameras with the intention of cutting clips in from the second camera while using the video and soundtrack from the main camera, however the two video files are out of sync by half a second or so by the end. How can I 'stretch' the shorter clip so they coincide properly? Thanks, David.

    David
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
    Typically, select the clip,
as you hold down the Alt key of the computer main keyboard, tap the left or right arrow key once. Each tap = 1 frame nudge.
as you hold down the Shift+Alt keys of the computer main keyboard, tap the left or right arrow key once. Each tap = 5 frames nudge.
If you are working with audio editing, consider Edit Menu/Project Settings/General with Audio Display Format = Milliseconds.
Please let us know if any of the above worked for you.

  • How to synchronize two fpga DIO?

    Hi!
I am using two FPGA 7962R (flexrio) with each 6581 terminal board in PXIe-1082 chassis. My problem is how to synchronize two 7962R digital output with PXIe-1082 chassis backplane signal Dstar* or Clk10 or DAQ signal.
Actually I tried the synchronization with one DAQ counter clock (confering 'Gen Dig Pulse Train-Finite_NI. vi') , and get the signal PXI-Trig0 by source terminal and target terminal connection, but that one does not work properly. Especially, one trigger signal in HOST to set the starting point of each FPGA (7962R), make error by depending on the trigger signal value(Hz value and Timed loop clock in FPGA vi). It was very tricky and not reliable. (I am attaching figure files as explaining the situation)
My aim is simply to use two FPGA 7962R Digital output as one FPGA, for controling X-axis, Y-axis with each FPGA, while able to change each FPGA (X-axis, Y axis) digital output value. Because the synchronization is not correct, X,Y axis control with Two FPGA currently is out of target if I use simply while-loop design in HOST and timed-loop design in FPGA vi. What is correct design to synchronize the two FPGA 7962R without using PFI line, only with PXIe-1082 chassis backplane signal and able to change the digital output value? Please let me know any idea for HOST vi, FPGA vi programming.
    Many Thanks

You're being really ambiguous. You could "synchronize" those methods by adding the synchronized keyword to their method signature, in which case they will implicitly lock on the object they belong to. That's what most people will think you mean when you say synchronized. Is that what you meant? Or did you mean what BDLH was thinking in that you wanted to lock something, then do 1,2,3,4, then unlock it? That's something different. Be specific!
