Thanks

  • Sharing files between my imac and my MacBook Air?

How do I share files between my imac and my 2nd generation MacBook Air?
I have my imac that holds alot of files that I want to transfer over to my MacBook Air. How do I do this at home through a wireless network. I enabled file sharing on my Imac and MBA. This did not work. Any Help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.

I've used Apple's file sharing for years but two programs have made my life tons easier. One is the freeware DropCopy - install it on both computers and you'll see a black dot on your desktop. Drag a file onto the dot and it is copied to the other computer. If you have more than 2 computers you can easily select which computer gets the file.
The second is the freeware program DropBox. Like DropCopy you need to install the program on both computer. Unlike DropCopy, DropBox watches a folder on your computer called DropBox and any file put into it gets synced to the cloud and from there copied to the other computer. One of the great things about DropCopy is that you can also access your files via the Internet.

  • Syncing Mail Between My iMac and Macbook

I am new to the Mac world (I am a PC convert) and I now have an iMac and a Macbook for work.
I have a couple of questions (some of which belong in this group and some elsewhere but I figured someone here could point me in the right direction):
    1. My company's email does not support IMAP, only POP. What is the best way to keep my email clients sync'ed? Ideally I would like my Inbox and all of my folders to be the same on my desktop and laptop and it would be great if it was automated somehow.
    2. What is the best way to handle my iPhone? Should I make my Macbook the "Sync Master" and only sync it to that?
    3. What is the best way to keep my folders and iTunes sync'ed between my iMac and Macbook? Someone suggested Martian Slingshot as the best way to keep them together. Do other people concur?
Any other advice/experience that people may have on the easiest way to use a Desktop in the office and travel with a sync'ed laptop is appreciated.
As I mentioned, I am very new to the Mac world. I can't really think of any great way to sync them in the PC World either but I am grateful for your help. I know I should have gotten a Macbook Pro but my boss didn't want to get me one so I am stuck with the hardware I have.
    Thanks.
    Jeremy

What I've done with email in the past is set only one of the machines to delete email from the server (if your company allows you that option). But you need to make sure you check with the one that doesn't delete before the other. You may be able to delete manually as well, so don't delete anything from the server until mail has been downloaded to both (I think this can be done in Apple Mail under advanced prefs). But that won't help with tracking replies, etc. And you'll have to manage mailboxes seperately.
.Mac has a bunch of syncing options, but you may not want to go to that expense.
Sorry I don't have any advice on the other stuff, only running 1 Mac.

  • My host name changes every few days, since Xmas adding a macbook its changed 6 times. Do I need to stop this? Does it cause problems with sharing between the iMac and macbook?

my host name changes every few days, since Xmas adding a macbook its changed 6 times. Do I need to stop this? Does it cause problems with sharing between the iMac and macbook?

There are several possible causes for this problem.
    1. Two (or more) computers on the local network have the same Bonjour name, such as "X's-MacBook-Pro.local".
    2. You have two simultaneous connections to the same local network: probably Ethernet and Wi-Fi. If applicable, disconnect the Ethernet cable or turn off Wi-Fi.
    3. A Mac wakes from sleep due to network traffic. This is due to a bug in OS X that may only affect some models.
    4. A device that gets its network address from the router wakes from sleep, and the address it was using before has been assigned to another device.
    5. A third-party wireless router has incompatible settings or firmware. In that case, refer to the manufacturer or ISP for support. Restarting the router may help, temporarily.
    6. See also this support article.
Rename the computer in the Sharing preference pane.

  • What's the best way to share my Aperture and FCPX projects between an iMac and MacBook Pro?

    Greetings,
I own both an iMac and MacBook Pro and I'm interested in figuring out the best way to have access to my iTunes, Aperture and Final Cut Pro X files not only when I'm at home using the iMac, but when I'm out and about with the MBP.
I'm sure there are others among us who require a similar setup so I was hoping you guys could share with me how you solved this little problem, and also inform me of any potential negatives for your method so that I'm well prepared. Thanks.

Best is a subjective term, as it will ultimately come down to preference. The fastest however, would be to wait until they market has a few thunderbolt drives available for purchase...
But like the first poster stated, a firewire 800 drive, would be the more convenient choice for now. Or you could set the shared folder on your iMac to be avaible on your network and use it to allow your MBP to access it wirelessly.
Obviously whatever you change, just save it back to the same folder on the iMac. Keep in mind it will not be as fast as the first suggestion (unless it is a wired network), but may be usefull for smaller files.
However, you should have everthing backed up via an external drive, that is always useful...

  • Sharing Files between Windows Vista and Macbook Pro

    Hi everyone!
I have just bought my first Macbook Pro and I love it. I am running Windows Vista on my desktop and connect wirelessly to the internet via a Netgear router. I have managed to connect to the internet with the Macbook Pro wirelessly too.
I am not sure how to set up file sharing between the PC and Macbook - can anyone point me to some SIMPLE instructions please?
    Many thanks

this is a wonderful article! thanks so much!
only one small change though. you don't really need to create another user ID to access the windows machine. i used my existing ID and it logged on fine!
but still, thanks for the rest of the article. i was totally lost without it...

  • HT2500 how can I synch mail between an iMac and Macbook Air?

I have a Macbook Air running10.7.4 and an iMac running similar.  I use Mail as local tool for my hotmail account but this means inevitably that mail is nt synched between the iMac and MBA.  I want to be able to access my mail from both computers but only do so nce.  I would love to be able to synch mail folders between the two so that I could keep my mail in order.  Only having to read/delete once would be a further benefit

set it up as an IMAP account instead of POP. IMAP syn with server (which also means other devices using that mail sync too) where as POP doesn't modify what's on the server. most hotmail accounts setup by default as POP

  • BT Yahoo mail no longer syncs between two iMac and MacBook

I've used BT Yahoo Mail on an iMac, Macbook and iPad successfully for some time with IMAP settings.  Following recent upgrades, the inbox is no longer kept in sync on the different computers.  Messages read on one computer are not marked as read on the other, and newly arrived incoming mail is not displayed on the second computer, having appeared on the first.  The only solution seems to be to rebuild the mailbox - tedious as it takes time, and you don't know until you try whether there is mail to be synced.
I'm using Mail 6.5 (1508) on the iMac, and Mail 5.3 (1283) on the MacBook.
Is there any solution to this please?
    Thanks.
    Stephen

  • Syncing project files/paths between an iMac and Macbook Pro

I work in music production and am looking to purchase a new iMac. However, I'm on the road about 30% of the time, and need to continue to work on in-progress projects on my Macbook Pro. So I need my project files, and all the associated files (plugins, WAVs, soundbanks, etc) to exist in sync on both computers with idential paths.
Basically I'm looking for the easiest way to create and make edits to a project on my desktop, be able to access/edit that project on my laptop when I'm travelling, and have all the changes I made on the road back on the desktop when I return.
Thanks in advance for any help!

You need to do three things:
Set up a way to find your desktop computer when you're on the road
Establish a network connection to the desktop
Send changed files over the network
There's more than one way to meet each of these requirements. This is only an example.
1 and 2 are most easily accomplished using the "Back to My Mac" feature of iCloud. You then need to enable Remote Login (SSH) on the desktop, and follow the instructions linked below to connect to it:
Remote SSH using Back To My Mac
If you have a static external IP address for the network the desktop is on, you don't necessarily need "Back to My Mac."
For 3, you can use the Unison File Synchronizer. It's free and works well, but it's not easy to configure. See the documentation for details.

  • How do I transfer files between my iMac and my MacBook Pro using an ethernet cable (not with AirPort)?

Even though I connect my computers with an ethernet cable the files are still being transferred wirelessly.  I can tell because the transfers (usually around 4GB) take a few minutes with AirPort off, but 30 minutes to an hour with AirPort on.  I want to transer the files and still have AirPort on since I work on both computers at the same time and want to maintain the connection to the internet.

Be sure Ethernet is listed first in System Prefs > Network.
If it isn't, click the "gear" icon and select Set Service Order.

  • How do I share directories between my iMac and Macbook Pro?

    Hi there,
I have a Macbook Pro (13 inch, Mid 2010, 8Gb RAM and 1Tb SSHD drive) and an iMac (2012 model, 8GB RAM, 1TB hard drive). Both run the most recent version of Yosemite.
At the moment I tend to use the iMac as the master computer, its the one I put new music on, new photos, etc. The Macbook I use when not at home but it obviously does not have anywhere near as much music or photos on it. It's annoying as I can't synch my iPhone with the Macbook without losing files that are on the iMac.
Is there a way that I can share the same directories for iTunes and iPhoto (And it's replacement Photos when it comes out). The ideal situation being that if I update one, it also updates the other.
Would having cloud storage be the answer? Then again would the Macbook have access to these directories if I'm not in range of WiFi?
    Thanks!
    J

I use iTunes Match ($25/year – not too expensive) and iCloud Photo Library for this. I sync my phone with the desktop computer, but I don't store all my music and photos on the phone because there's not anywhere near enough capacity.
All of your Apple devices can access these services.

  • My light room 5 can't read my files on my iMac and MacBook Pro any help pls

my light room 5 can't read my file on my MacBook Pro and my iMac I already update my camera raw on ps cs6  any help with this issue pls

If the error message is “files cannot be read” then this is usually a problem with the destination at the right of the destination import panel.
If the issue is something different than not being able to import then please give a more detailed description.

  • Can I synch iPhoto between an iMac and MacBook Air?

My boss has been working on a book to be printed in iPhoto on her iMac (10.6.8) and now wants to work on the book on her MacBook Air (10.9.2). Can I sync the two machines so she can work on the book on either one of the machines? She also wants the photos to sync. iCloud is not an option on the iMac unless I update the system. What's the easiest/best solution?

    no
you can move the entire library to a differnt machine and work on it then move it back - there is no way to work on a book or other project on two different systems at the same time
