Synchronizing Laptop iTunes to iPod

I just received a 5th Gen iPod from my girlfriend, who performed the initial setup using my laptop, importing her iTunes library and synchronizing her library and playlists to the new iPod before giving it to me. I then went through the process of "validating" the music in the Library, and created my own series of playlists. When I try to synchronize the iPod, nothing happens. The following is the sequence of events:
1) Started laptop.
2) Initiated iTunes.
3) Connected iPod.
4) iPod says "do not disconnect"
5) iPod "do not disconnect" goes away, and iTunes "recognizes" the iPod in about 2 minutes, and "George's iPod" appears on the left "Source" list, complete with new Playlists.
6) A check of the Playlists shows the existing playlists as initially installed.
7) Click on "File" and "Update Songs on George's iPod".
8) iTunes program says ""updating iPod, do not disconnect", and iPod responds with "do not disconnect" and the slashed circle symbol.
9) After about a minute, the "do not disconnect" messages go away.
10) Check the Playlists again, and there's no change. The update didn't happen.
11) Did the whole sequence again, highlighting "Library" as the source, then again highlighting "George's iPod". No change.
12) Rebooted Laptop.
13) iPod shows "do not disconnect", and iTunes launches on laptop.
14) Click on "File" and "Update Songs on George's iPod".
15) "do not disconnect" appears for about a minute on both iPod and iTunes screen.
16) Check iPod playslists again, no change, no update.
If someone can tell me what I may be doing wrong, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

It sounds like you're using USB 1.1 or something. Always use FireWire on a Mac if possible, its just better. Other than that, you should check what encoding format your songs are in. If they are in AIFF, WAV, Apple Lossless, or some other HUGE format then obviously it will take a long time. If most of your songs are in AAC or MP3, then they shouldn't take long to transfer as long as you are using FireWire (or are 100% sure that you are using USB 2.0)
If this isn't the case, then restart your computer and reset your iPod by pressing the center and menu buttons for 6 seconds. Other than that, I'm not sure what could be causing your problem.

  • Full usage of one iTunes account / iPod and two laptops

Basically, I want to purchase, upload, sync, etc. music files to / from one iTunes account / iPod as necessary via two different laptops (mine and my wife's).
Does the one iTunes account that we currently have allow for this functionality? If so, it seems I should see the same view from my laptop (as I see from my wife's laptop) when logging onto our iTunes account but I don't...
When logging in to our iTunes account from her laptop, I see everything. And when logging in from my laptop, I see nothing. While the iPod is up-to-date, I'm afraid to sync using my laptop for fear of losing everything...
I’ve reviewed the forums as well as the two help topics titled "moving iTunes Store purchases to another computer" and "sharing your iTunes library across computers" but have come up short.
I hope this makes sense. Please advise...thanks

Yes you can use the same account with iTunes to login on two computers or even two user accounts on the same computer. Just not at the same time.
Purchases made on one machine or user account will not be on the other machine unless you transfer the files yourself from machine to machine. If you look at the account info within iTunes your purchase history will include purchases from both machines.

I have an iPod nano 6th generation and I downloaded 3 music videos but they won't play on my iPod. They only play on my laptop/iTunes. How can I get it to work? I know that my iPod should take music videos because there is a pre-made playlist called "Music videos". Can anyone help me please????

You can sync the music videos, but they won't play on your 6G Nano, because it does not support video playback. Sorry.

If you  have iTunes 11 turn on the Sidebar. Go to iTunes>View and click on Show Sidebar. You can also do a Crtl+S to show the sidebar. The sidebar is where Devices appears. and Control+B to show the Menu bar
Then make sure that you have the right boxes chacked to sync. See:

Have you successfuly synced from that iTunes library before?

I just bought a new laptop and my ipod nano will not stay connected to my computer. When I first connect the ipod it starts to sync on my ipod but not on itunes. The ipod is initially connected to my computer, I can see it when I look on devices in my computer. However, when it finishes syncing it is no longer detected to my computer. I cannot transfer any of my songs to my new laptop because of this. I have tried to reinstall itunes, reset my ipod and use a different port. None of these things worked. Any ideas?

  • Can I use more than 1 laptop to download iTunes for iPod touch please

Can I use more than 1 laptop to download iTunes to iPod touch?

My daughter disabled her iPod we took it into the shop to reset it but when I'm starting to add details again it says connect to iTunes we have never used a laptop with this as ours is broken. Someone has offered to do it on their laptop that's why I have asked. Is there no way we could use another laptop in the future. We only buy iTunes cards for it at the moment.

  • I have restored my iPod classic and everything has been wiped off, now when I connect it to the laptop, iTunes doesn't recognise it and windows won't format it, an error message comes up "unable to format"

I have restored my iPod classic and everything has been wiped off, now when I connect it to the laptop, iTunes doesn't recognise it and windows won't format it, an error message comes up "unable to format". Can someone please help me sort this problem, it's so frustrating!!!!!!

It could be an indication or a damaged or dying hard drive.  I would recommend doing a disk diagnostic on the iPod's HD using the instructions given by turingtest2 in this older thread.  He also covers what the resulting numbers indicate.

Go to www.ecamm.com and d/l PhoneView.
To prevent a sync when plugging in the iPod/iPhone - hold down the 'option' and the 'command' keys when plugging in the iPod/iPhone - key the keys down until the iPod/iPhone is listed under the Devices list in iTunes - this will prevent a sync from taking place.
With PhoneView you can take the content from the device to the iTunes library.

  • Why can't I sync my iTunes Library from my second laptop to my iPod?

I just synced my iPod to my iTunes library on my OLD laptop and then used Home Sharing to import that content to my new laptop.
Then, I tried syncing my iTunes Library from my new laptop to my iPod and it said " This will delete all old music, videos & movies from your iPod and replace it with your iTunes Library" wich is exactly what I wanna do! So I clicked continue and it started syncing...
During the middle of the process a pop up appears and says " Your iTunes LIbrary cannot be synced to your iPod because there is not enough room on your iPod (additionaly 2.33GB required) "
But I thought it would erase my songs from my ipod ( approximately 2.40GBs) and replace it with the new ones from my library (2.33GB) ???? Why didn't it? What can I do to have my iTunes Library from my new laptop to my iPod Touch?
( I want my iPod to be able to sync anytime to my new computer because I'm getting rid of the old one.)
    Please help, thanks.

So I copied everything in the iTunes folder from my old computer
and sent it to an 8GB USB,
which I'll insert into my new computer and paste the files on to /Music/
    Will that work?

"how do i get my itunes and ipod contents that i've downloaded and bought onto my new laptop?"
The transfer of purchased content to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

"When i sync my ipod it wants to erase all my songs"
When you get the message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows with iTunes 7 installed hold down the Control and Alt keys (or Shift + Ctrl keys in older versions). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer: iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.
