Synchronizing Lightroom with Bridge Changes

I am having a problem with synchonization between Lightroom 2.4 and bridge (using Photoshop CS4, Camera Raw version 5.3.0.21).
I have lighroom preferences set as follows: unsaved metadata is checked for cell icons in grid view and automatically write changes into metadata is checked in catalog settings. Furthermore Camera Raw settings are set to save image settings in sidecar xmp files.
Here is the problem:
If I make a change in Lightroom the changes are automatically reflected in Bridge. However, if I then make a change in Bridge (Camera Raw) the changes are not recognized in Lightroom. In fact, the upward arrow on the Lighroom cell that indicates that metadata was changed externally does not appear automatically. Is there a refresh that is necessary? How would I know that a file has been changed externally? If I make a change to the file in question and then undo the change the update icon appears!!! but this is a strange way to find out that the file has been changed. Any suggestions? would much appreciate your input.
Thank you.

Lightroom doesn't continually monitor what goes on outside of the catalog and the method that it uses for periodically checking for external changes is a tad slow. The best way to ensure that Lr catalog accurately reflects any externally applied edits/metadata that has been applied to an image is to use the Synchronise Folder command. This command scans the folder looking for external changes and new images. You then have the option of reading the edits and changes back to the Lightroom catalog.
BTW: Upgrade to Camera Raw 5.4

  • Why Does the Photograph's Preview Change in Lightroom and Bridge? | The Complete Picture with Julieanne Kost | Adobe TV

In this video tutorial Julieanne explains one of the great mysteries of Lightroom and Bridge – why Lightroom (or Bridge) displays a photograph one way and then changes the way it looks a moment later. It will all become clear with just a little information about how digital camera files are captured and displayed by different applications.

This tutorial was outstanding in explaining why Bridge and LR may have different renditions of the same photograph as well as why it changes after a few seconds.  This camera calibration video is one of the best that I have seen.

  • Lightroom or Bridge, which is best to change 20m photo names

I would like to completely change the naming structure of approximately 20,000 images and would like to hear opinions on which program, Lightroom or Bridge, to use and if there are any precautions with either program that I should be aware of.

Ray, I have LR and CS4.  In the last few days I've tried to use Bridge to rename a folder with about 250 photos in it.  I've never had more problems with such a simple operation.  Bridge would stop renaming them and half would end up with temp file names.  I would select all of the files and do a batch rename and then nothing would happen.  I would wait and wait and nothing would happen.  Then I would quit Bridge and get the Windows message that Bridge experienced a problem and would I send an error report, and when I reopened the folder half of the files would again have temporary names assigned by Bridge.  It took me hours to finally get them all renamed.  I don't know if it is my computer, my OS, or what but it was an irritating mess.  I will never use Bridge to do file management again.
Like was said, if they are in LR then you have to use LR to do this.  But if they aren't in LR I would download Irfanview to do the batch renaming.  I've never had a problem with it and it's fast and easy.

Hi I have been having a problem with Bridge in CS4 recently. So uninstalled CS4 and Lightroom 4.4 and reinstalled them on my Desktop PC. When I turned on Bridge through CS4, My thumb nail images disappeared and a thumb nail icon with CR2 appeared. Now some of my images have disappeared from Light room 4.4, but I can find them in CS4 and Bridge now shows some thumb nails as images and some as an icon with CR2. I have spent two weeks going through preferences etc. to find how to resolve my problem. Please can you Help? Meany thanks in advance

I don't use LR and rarely use the bridge so I can not answers about thumbnails in them,  However thumbnails in windows file explorer and windows dialog for CS2 files will only show if you have installed codec into windows that will produce them. Windows does not do CR2 thumbnails on its own. I use FastPictureViewer Codec package for RAW File and PSD files thunbmail support.

Lightroom 4 supports Soft Proof capability that also lets you see an accurate histogram for different output RGB spaces. Lightroom 5 now also supports under 'Edit In' > 'Open As Smart Object in Photoshop.'
I agree the tutorial was excellent, thank you very much. I would just like to add that there is no reason why you can't use both Lightroom and Adobe Bridge for"digtal asset management." Keyword metadata added in LR can be written to the file or XMP sidecar using CTRL+S keys that will appear in Adobe Bridge and vice-versa. I do most of my InDesign layout image processing using LR, but keep track of ALL my project assests using Bridge. Keywords are added using BOTH applications with no issues to date.

Not sure why it changed. Could I have accidentally changed a setting?

  • Workflow issue with Bridge and everything else

Short and sweet. Well, not really.
I use windows - so as a result, for some reason unknown to man (after a decade of waiting), I still cannot see "previews" of most, if not all of any adobe software in the windows dialogue boxes.
think PDF's and the registry hacks we have to do to "enable" previews. But on a mac I can?
So I have to use bridge - a lot.
Now when I have a linked image in illustrator (or whatever) and choose "reveal in bridge" it will hunt and drill down through a multitude of folders and display the image in it's native folder - which I can then open in photoshop for instance - edit it - and Illustrator will detect the change and update. Awesome.
    But aside from running a script to send a batch job to a program, it really doesn't "do" anything else that one would expect a "bridge" to do;
I cannot create a "project" portfolio that would track a client project and all it's related documents.
         Or collaborate with a team.
I cannot have non destructive edits of a document (such as using an instance of a file like lightroom does) - or "send copy to photoshop" and have Bridge stack the results.
I cannot combine and tag collections of documents (make a database of stuff).
I cannot ask Bridge to tell me which documents have placed documents, or (vice versa) which documents are placed into other documents - that would be so cool.
imagine being able to select a jpeg or psd file and have the option to "Find documents using this file"
or looking at a "project" and having a list of all first level documents with all their subsequent "placed content" listed all drop down expandable
So my beef today is that I finally spent an hour messing about thinking I had something "wrong" and went through Bridge CS6 with a fine tooth comb trying to find out if anything had changed.
and nope - it still doesn't behave as one would think it would.
Currently, I have some documents that require monthly changes to images, which for the most part came from one photo shoot, and all have essentially the same perspective, appearance, lighting and shading, but all different products and I have a folder of "preformatted images". So monthly I really only need to update the images, and a bit of text. Being posters, InDesign whines a bit for vector art manipulation, so I stick to Illustrator for this job.
    But in Illustrator, I cannot choose another image to replace my linked image - without either;
a: (reveal in bridge), select new replacement image - place as a new image, which then needs to be manipulated as the "old" image was, "remaking" all the adjustments, and then finally deleting the original linked image.
b: (reveal in bridge) keep bridge open on the image I need (and it's name), go back to illustrator to open the "relink" windows dialogue and "blindly" browse till I find the image I want as shown in bridge.
c: simply relink and browse blindly to find a file you can't see a preview of and guess, or drag and drop, or all the other non practical ways to replace the image.
Option B gives the desired end result where the image I have in a clipping mask, buried in a document in a certain way, with certain effects, is simply replaced without impacting anything else.
But this takes quite some time when there are a lot of images.
So Bridge and its promised workflow functionality still isn't living up to it's purpose exactly.
    Bridge isn't bridging.
With indesign, it's the same issue - you can't "relink" by revealing in bridge, choosing a "replacement" image and "update"
Maybe a "relink with Bridge" choice in the Links menu?
and in bridge, since Illustrator triggered the request, a button appears to "Replace" - once you finish browsing and highlighting the replacement image you need, just click it and it's done.
    So two issues -
Why can't previews of adobe files be shown in windows explorer (still)?
if they did, I'd really have no use for Bridge.
Why isn't bridge actually communicating with the apps connecting to it?
    - and yes, I understand that I cannot ask bridge to go find a placed file and replace it with "this" file, but when illustrator "asks" for "this", bridge should be able to "respond" and give "that" since the app initiated the request.
Bridge should be a workflow tool as advertised - it should literally be able to be a proper workflow hub for all things adobe (and be able to catalogue and track all design file type previews - corel files, cad, 3d, etc)... but as it stands it's just a glorified windows explorer without workflow options.
Bridge hasn't been altered in years, and it's still lingering around - I think - so that we can simply see thumbnails, rather than just allowing each adobe program to make "previews" windows needs.
I can change metadata in windows, I can use freeware to change it extensively.
So aside from the "open in" options and the ability to browse all adobe file types, what's the point?

I couldn't read all through your post as I am jetting out of here.
    Buy this:
    http://www.fastpictureviewer.com/codecs/
and install it. It's relatively cheap. Screen shot is from Windows Explorer.
Handles ID, PSD, etc., files as well. Though the preview uses greeked text for the most part for the ID files.
    Take care, Mike

  • Adobe Bridge Changed Cr2 Files to CR2.Jpg

I'm so exhausted trying to figure this out! I'm a new Photoshop user. Just purchased it. Imported or opened Canon 40D raw files to see slideshow. I usually copy the original raw file from the cf card to a folder on my external drive. Now I need to go in and edit them in Lightroom 2.5 and I only see a small size ( 256x170) file "IMG_8611.CR2.jpg (what?). Does Adobe Bridge change file formats on its own? This is scary! Are the original cr2 files still located somewhere on the external drive? What's going on here? Also, is there any person to person support at Adobe? This is terrible. Thanks.

In the first post you said you edited the RAW file in Lightroom.  Now you do not mention it.  Where are you editing the file?  If in Lightship I don't believe the normal mode is to generate a XMP file.
When you open Photoshop it does not automatically open camera raw, so confused here also.
The least confusing way to edit is to open Bridge and right click on RAW file, then choose "open in camera raw".  You edit and then click done to save edits, or open image to go to PS.  If you double click image it will open PS and the same ACR window.
You can set up Bridge so that the external drive is a "favorite".  Beware that if you have Bridge set to "open on startup", the external drive may not be recoginzed as Bridge can load before the computer can recognize it is connected.  Disable this function.
You say "I go to the folder and open the image directly into Camera Raw".  Is this a separate window with all the adjustment sliders that is titled "Camera Raw 5.x"?  Once you do your edits here and click Done it saves the edits and puts a little weird circle in upper right corner of thumbnail to show it has been edited.  If you click Open Image it opens it in PS with the edits.
How do you save the picture once you have made your edits, Done, Save, Save As, or ?
You ask "Is there a way to find where the XMP's are and if I can find my original CR2 file in there somewhere? "  As I said in previous post you use Win. Explorer.  It should be in same folder as file, with same name.  NOTE - not all files generate an XMP file, depends on the edit.  Some of the info is written directly to the file.

  • Date Time Original different in Lightroom and Bridge

Why is it that the Date Time Original in Lightroom is affected by whatever time zone the PC is set to? This is not the case in Bridge.
    Example:
I fly from San Francisco to Washington DC and set my notebook's time zone from Pacific Time to Eastern Time upon arrival. I also make the necessary adjustment to the Time on my camera. I shoot a photo at 6pm in Washington DC, upload it to my notebook and import it into Lightroom. Lightroom shows a Date Time Original of 6pm. So does Bridge. So far so good.
I return back to San Francisco and set my notebook's time zone back to Pacific Time. In Lightroom, the Date Time Original of that photo is now 3pm. In Bridge, it still gives a Date Time Original of 6pm.
Confusing? Yes, especially when traveling across lots of different time zones. In some cases, the Date Time Original will change not only the time, but the Date as well (if the change crosses midnight).
Try it for yourself. Take a look at the Date Time Original of any given photo in Lightroom, change the Time Zone on your PC, and see the Time change for yourself.
Since Bridge and Lightroom are both Adobe products, I have to wonder why they display EXIF times differently. Is this a bug? Or intentional?

I have been als been plagued by LR displaying the capture time to be, say 3 AM (03:00), when I know I took the picture at 1 PM (13:00). I decided to try and see why this happens. With the help of Phil Harvey's exiftool, I can see that my Canon cameras embed the time into the EXIF data without any time zone information i.e.: Date/Time Taken = 2008:04:02 16:09:23.
    Here is what I found:
If the image is now edited with Bridge, the information is changed to: Date/Time Taken = 2008:04:02 16:09:23-08:00 (time zone of the editing computer for the date the image was made. In this case the date was before daylight savings time started.)
When edited with GeoSetter (good for adding GPS information) the information is changed to: Date/Time Taken = 2008:04:02 16:09:23+02:00 (time zone for Cairo where the picture was taken.)
Lastly edited with LR, the information is changed to: Date/Time Taken = 2008:04:02 16:09:23-08:00
When the above images are viewed in LR, using PDT, they display the time as 17:09:23 except for the image tagged with the Cairo time, which displays 07:09:23. If the computer's time zone is changed the displayed time changes accordingly.
If the images are displayed with Photoshop CS3 all the times are correctly displayed as 16:09:23 as one would expect.
It appears that the factoring in of the time zone into the displayed time was a conscious decision by the Adobe designers. A decision that several of us are not happy with.

  • Help! Bridge Changing my created dates

Oh dear ... I am just learning Bridge and into the Keywords area. I have been adding some Keywords into my photos and occasionally rotating a photo. All was going well, then suddenly the Date Created started changing to today's date ... what am i doing wrong?????
I'm in Win Vista everything current with the updates and using CS4.
    Thanks,
    Sherry

Sherry - Both links still work for me, but I copied post #7 on second link about lightroom for you. Hope this works for you.
    John O'Connor - 12:07pm Jan 30, 08 PST (#7 of 13) Edited: 30-Jan-2008 at 11:08am
In Bridge, "Date Created" is the date the Photograph was taken: i.e the date recorded by your camera and stored within the file. "Date File Created" is the date when you created the file on disc, that is the date/time when you downloaded the picture from your camera.
In Lightroom, you can change "Date Created" by using Metadata->Edit Capture Time. The metadata panel shows this as "Date Time Digitized" and "Date Time Original".
(take a look at Exif specification, http://www.exif.org/specifications.html.
On page 30, it explains DateTimeDigitized and DateTimeCaptured; both are usually the same for a digital camera, maybe not if it is really slow!).
So, Bridge's sort by "Date Created" is that recorded by Camera, whereas "Date File Modified" is the date your file on disc was modified.
A pity, though, that different Adobe programs would not use the same terminology.

  • Bridge CC cache not compatible with bridge CS6

Starting the Photoshop CC adventure. First install was Bridge. First test was to see if the Bridge CC cache is compatible with Bridge CS6 cache. First result is NO.
      Test method:
      1. Set the Bridge CC cache location to the same folder I use for CS6, which contains 10+ gigs of thumbs for my library.
      2. Navigated Bridge CC to a sub-folder with about 30 images, see Bridge CC re-do the thumb extractions.
      3. Close Bridge CC, launch Bridge CS6, navigate to the same sub-folder, see Bridge CS6 re-do the thumb extractions.
      4. Close Bridge CS6, launch Bridge CC, still pointing to the same sub-folder, see it re-do thumb extractions again.
      5. Repeat steps 3&4, always with same result, a redundant re-generation of thumbs.
      Conclusion:
The actual thumbnail files in the cache are the same. But something happens in the index files (data/store) to make each version think it does not have thumbnails, so it re-generates them. IOW, when Bridge CC looks at the cache last used by Bridge CS6 it says "I have not been here, must re-cache", and visa-versa.
      Solution:
Must let Bridge CC have its own separate cache, so the two versions don't walk over each other. Must let Bridge CC re-cache everything, which for me (and most users I assume) will be a long and time consuming process.
Not much surprise here. The same was true for CS5 vs. CS6.

Not much surprise here. The same was true for CS5 vs. CS6.
Then it also should not be a surprise for you that this behavior already started in the Filebrowser (Bridge predecessor that came with CS1 and by far the most stable and fast cache ever in the history of Bridge) and has not changed since. Nor is it likely it will chance in the future.
Hence my advice to not use Bridge for long term DAM because you need to recache the lot every new version...

  • Problem with Bridge CS6 and MCXRedirector (OS X 10.9.5)

Good afternoon all, I have a very irritating issue with Bridge CS6 that I've pretty much given up on now, so I'm wondering if anyone out there can help me before I do.
The issue lies with Bridge CS6 running in a networked Mac environment, first, a little background: I am using OS X Server's Workgroup Manager facility for various restrictions and folder redirection. Our users had a nasty bug a little while ago that caused saved Photoshop files to end up in ~/Library/Caches/TemporaryItems instead of the actual network home location they selected to save in. While this was happening, a single entry was being used in the MCXRedirectory preference to redirect the entire of ~/Library/Caches/
This was resolved by changing that preference and branching it out a little more, so now the folders subject to redirection are as follows:
    ~/Library/Caches/Adobe
    ~/Library/Caches/Adobe Camera Raw
    ~/Library/Caches/Meta
    ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe
Doing this fixed the saving issue with Photoshop, but has in turn broken Bridge. When launched, Bridge immediately fails with the error "Adobe Bridge CS6 quit unexpectedly" and gives the three options to ignore, report or reopen.
Taking away the ~/Library/Caches/Adobe redirection allows Bridge to work as normal again, but then I'm back to square one with Photoshop files saving in TemporaryItems again.
Does anyone have any advice to remedy this annoying problem please?
    Thanks in advance.
    EDIT: Bridge version is 5.0.2.4

Sorry, did not solve the problem. The info given did not bear much relation to what I could see in the print drop down box. I have been through all settings I can access and every thing appears normal. The print preview in the print box appears normal and shows colour, but this does not translate to the actual print.
When printing a docuement of 3 pages or more using double sided the result is the first docuement page on one side of a sheet and the last page on the other side, but upside down, despite orientation set to long edge binding. All other pages between first and last are ignored.
When printing docuements originating from printer software such as Print Quality Diagnostic and Make The Most Of Your Printer, the printer performs correctly with good quality printing and colour.
I assume that the Mac update to 10.9.5 has corrupted something but I am not knowkedgeable enough to understand what. Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated.

  • Organizing image library with Bridge

Hi! I'm new to the Adobe Forums but very experienced online. I need some help with Bridge.
I've been tasked with cleaning up an existing image library of (currently) ~40,000 images. I have another batch of ~8,000 files I'll be adding later. I'm using Bridge CC on Windows 7. I don't have access to Lightroom, haven't used Bridge much since CS3, and use Aperture as my DAM at home, so I'm re-discovering how things work.
We have numerous, not well-organized folders with many duplicates, retouched versions, multiple sizes, etc. I want to be able to search, delete duplicates manually, and move remaining files into a new folder structure. I'm also assigning labels and adding copyright/ownership metadata.
I'm having a couple of problems using the Edit->Find command.
When I've run Find and built a list, then do any editing operation like delete files, the Find command starts over instead of retaining the existing results. This is obviously time-consuming and throws me out of whatever set of images I'm trying to manage. Is there a way to use the Find results and NOT have Bridge start the search over?
I also need a way to search with both AND and OR operators. Example: Find JPEG or TIFF or Photoshop or Camera RAW images and filename foo. I can't use specific criteria to narrow my search, so I'm getting a huge set of results. This takes forever, eats RAM, and my first issue makes it impossible to do any editing.
I'd also appreciate any tips or suggestions to make this job easier.
Thanks in advance for the assistance.
    Dave

I'm not sure why that functionality isn't just built into a better Find command? Adobe?
As this is a user to user forum you are not addressing Adobe here, you need to use the Feature request site from Photoshop Family for this:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/
Also be aware that you have very specific needs and while Bridge can be a very powerful tool for organizing files it s not that very good for archiving in long term with large numbers of files. ideally you should use a combination of Bridge and a real dedicated DAM (digital asset management) application like Canto Cumulus (can be costly for custom build solutions but has also a single user version at a reasonable price) Canto can find duplicates by itself and has the option to build customized queries for searching.
You also have Extensis Portfolio and some other reasonable cheap solutions you could take a look at. However, for the ideal DAM you need a custom build one that sadly comes also with a price
