Synchronizing Mail between iMac and Powerbook; Both 10.4.6

Is there a way to get my e-mail account (quite large) synchronized between my 2 Macs?
Thanks very much!
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

For IMAP or .Mac accounts, yes -- that's what IMAP was designed for. For POP accounts, no, but you can get close:

  • Insufficient privledges when sharing between iMac and Powerbook

    I just upgraded both my powerbook and iMac to Leopard and want to turn on file sharing between the two. The way it used to work with Tiger, I would just click on the drive on my network and it would give me read and write privledges. Now it is saying that I have insufficient privledges. I can get the powerbook to mount the iMac and vice versa but can't seem to do much else.
    I am trying to move my iPhoto library from my Powerbook to my iMac.
    Thanks

    If you are trying to write directly into the iPhoto Library, note that it is not a regular folder but a package. The permissions on the iPhoto Library package only allow writing by the owner, so another approach is needed, such as those mentioned in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198

  • Synching mail between iMac and iPad

    Is it possible to sync my mail folders on my iMac with my iPad?  In other words I want the same folders on both.  Thanks

    I think that I misled you because I worded my response incorrectly.
    The folders that you set up in Mac Mail are for local storage only. If you set up the folders on the server - do it in your webmail in a browser - those folders will sync to the iPad, but the ones that you set up in the Mac mail client will not sync - unless they are the folders that were on the server.
    That's how it should work anyway. Setup a test folder on the server and see if it syncs to the iPad, it should. Mine do.

    I am changing to iCloud on my iMac, MacBook Air and my iPhone. My iMac and MacBook both moved over to iCloud but my iPhone when I go to Settings and click on iCloud it shows my Mail setting turned Off. When I turn it on it wants me to create a new email address to turn on iCloud Mail. I already have to "me" accounts plus another email address and don't want to create another one. I don't understand why it's asking me to do this on my iPhone but didn't ask on my iMac or MacBook and is there a way around creating another @me.com email address?

  • How is it best to keep files synced between iMac and Macbook?  I work from home on my iMac and then out in meetings on my Macbook and need to have access to the same files on both.

    How is it best to keep files synced between iMac and Macbook?  I work from home on my iMac and then out in meetings on my Macbook and need to have access to the same files on both.  The folders are using Microsoft programmes as this is compatiable with 90% of my colleagues, therefore I can't use the Icloud service.

    No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
    For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • I have a Domain name with email forwarding to my Service Provider which worked very well when I had a PC. Now I have iMac and have changed to IMAP from POP3 so I can sync. between iMac and iPad but how?

    I have a Domain name with email forwarding to my Service Provider which worked very well when I had a PC. Now that I have iMac I have changed the account type to IMAP from POP3 so I can sync. between iMac and iPad but how?
    I do receive emails into my iMac for which I have 3 email accounts but am struggling on how synchronise between iMac and iPad so that both are up to date at all times.  I have also set up a iCloud email account thinking this was the way to go but have drawn a blank.
    Any help would be very much appreciated.

    Linc Davis,
    I have set up my email address both within my iMac and my ISP as IMAP accounts and I receive all emails without problem on my iMac. I have also set up an iCloud email address using my iMac.
    I have enabled the email within "setting" on my iPad and have used the iCloud account.  I have sent emails from the iMac to iPad using the iCloud account address and vice versa.  I have also sent emails from the iPad to the iMac using my non-iCloud email address and they have gotten through.
    The one thing I would like to have is for the iPad "mail" mailboxes to mimic the iMac "mail" mailboxes and both to be "in sync".  I am not really interested in using the iCloud email address for my email but would really like to use my "normal" addresses as these are what most people know me by.
    Do I need to set additional accounts within the iPad which are the same as the email accounts I have within the iMac and my ISP?  I have reached the end of my knowledge as regards email synchronsing.
    Thanks

  • Trouble using AirPlay between iMac and AppleTV

    I'm running OS X Lion 10.7.5 and I'm having trouble using AirPlay between iMac and AppleTV (2nd Gen).  It used to work fine, but for some reason it just stopped responding.  I can see my media on my iMac from AppleTV and I can see AppleTV from my iMac when attempting to use AirPlay.  However, when I try to pull or push media from my iMac to AppleTV it just stalls and never loads.  AirPlay works fine from my iPhone and iPad with AppleTV - it's limited to my iMac only.
    I'm using a Netgear R7000 wireless router and a Netgear AC120 WiFi Extender and as such, I have 4 available wireless networks (2 from the router and 2 from the extender / 2 - 2.4 GHz and 2 - 5 GHz).  My internet access is great and my network performance is good across the board.  All of my software/firmware is up to date (iMac, AppleTV and router/extenders). I've tried all combinations (mixing/matching) all of my wireless networks between devices (iMac/AppleTV) - nothing makes a difference (again, AirPlay works fine between my mobile devises/AppleTV).  Netgear Genie has been making changes to my network settings as new firmware has been installed in both the router and extender.  I'm guessing there is something screwy going on with the network settings on the iMac, but I can't figure it out.
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    I'm glad you got it all working. Out of interest, how do you (or your son) connect to the internet now? Is it just a dial-up connection? If it is, I am sure you know that, even if you get the Apple TV to share the connection, the speed will seriously limit the use of many of the Apple TV's features.
    The Airport Extreme is a great router but you will need a DSL or cable modem as well as it won't connect to the internet without one. There are many great (and cheaper!) combined modem/routers available if your son wants to get a high-speed network up and running at lower cost. Any other computers, phones, games consoles etc that you may have in the house can then all connect easily.
    I hope that I have helped a little and I will look out for future posts in case I can help again.

  • I am planning on recycling an old iMac and Powerbook.  However, the display on the iMac is so messed up I can't read anything and the Powerbook is unusable (no power) so what do I do about erasing the hardrives for security?

    I've been reading up on how to clean your hard drive so personal information can't be accessed, but if you can't get to your hard drive to clean it up, what are you supposed to do?  My town is offering an electronics recycling and I was hoping to drop off my old iMac and Powerbook.   I can turn the iMac on, but the display is really bad and almost unreadable.  The Powerbook is completely dead.   Any suggestions?  Thanks.

    Since both computers have operational problems, I'd suggest removing the hard drives from them.  That way, you'll have possession of the drives and their data.  Considering their age, I doubt that the recycling program will attempt to repair these computers for donation to needy parties, but if you thought so, you could buy a $15 adapter that would let you connect the bare drive to a USB port on your functioning computer.  Once connected, you could erase the drives and reinstall them.  You didn't indicate which iMac you have, but if it's a G3 model, this Macworld article has illustrated directions for hardware upgrades, which would show you how to remove the hard drive.  If your iMac is a G3 (400 MHz or faster) with the additional VGA port concealed under the plastic door on the rear of its underside, you could connect a VGA display and attempt setting up video mirroring.  Once done, you could wipe the drive, while using the connected display to navigate through the procedure.  This would eliminate the need to open the bottom of the housing, to access the hard drive for removal.  As for the PowerBook, you could post a topic in its specific Forum (depending on the model) and request directions for hard drive removal.  Post back as to your preferred option, if you have any questions regarding it.

  • I have a year old iMac and Macbook, both on 10.7.3.  Every time the iMac goes to sleep I lose wi-fi.  No problem with the Macbook and iPad.  A lot of people seem to have the same problem.  What's the solution?

    I have a year-old iMac and Macbook, both on 10.7.3.  Every time the iMac goes to sleep I lose wi-fi from  Airport Express.  No problem with the Macbook or my iPad.  It seems a lot Mac users are having the same problem.  Is there a solution?  Does Apple have a solution?

    Sometimes there are problems.
    Somethings to try but probably won't help....
    1. Repair Disk Permissions
    2. Startup in Safe mode by holding down the "Shift" key....
    3. Reset the P Ram by holding down the "Command/Option/P/R" keys at the same time...
    The above are standard items to do on any Mac from time to time.
    I repair permissions at least once a month....
    The other 2 periodically as they do straighten things out when they get out of whack....
    Thanks for the feedback.

  • A problem to sync emails in Mail app between iMac and Macbook Air

    Hello members,
    I have had a problem that can't sync emails in Mail app(OSX Mavericks) betwee iMac and Macbook Air. I have iCloud mail account and several Gmail accounts on the mail app.
    Is there anyone to help me?

    When both are at home on the same network and sharing drives, you can use a variety of tools.  Check the App store for fily syncronization.  Also, OS X includes rsync if you are a UNIX command line person, and there are shareware GUI's for rsync as well (RsyncX was one I remember).  Then there are commercial tools like Chronosync.
    Another, albeit to my mind cumbersome way, is to use an airport time capsule and time machine.  You use TM to backup each machine, and use the option in TM to browse another TM backup to restore from (eg. come home from a trip, backup the MacBook Air, then log on to the iMac, browse to the MBA backup volume and restore what you recently worked on from there).
    Or get a NAS device for home and use that as a common personal form of dropbox.  The key would be keeping a neat uniform directory structure for the things you need sync'd - like maybe just the Documents folder & subfolders.

  • Synchronizing contacts between calendar and mail

    All,
    I'm supposed to be implementing synhronization of contacts between calendar and email - unidirectional sync. in the direction from calendar to email is acceptable. I'm starting out with a sample program that somebody made and which should be working, but I have a problem when I get to calling CSDK_SetIdentity (CSDK_CreateSession and CSDK_ConnectAsSysop works fine).
    The returned status code is either CAPI_STAT_DATA_USERID_ID or CAPI_STAT_DATA_USERID_EXT_FORMAT, depending on my input. Examples of what I've been trying: "?/mail=[email protected],cn=users,dc=asker,dc=kommune,dc=no,cn=UM_SYSTEM,cn=EMailServerContainer,cn=Products,cn=OracleContext"; "[email protected]" ; "marius.heggstad" or "mheggsta"; and so on...
    Question 1: Examples of correct user id. format? Note that I don't understand the format examples given in the Calendar SDK Dev. Guide (s for Surname etc.).
    Question 2: If you have already developed a solution for this kind of sync. job, I'd like to get my hands on it - anything that could help me get going. I'm currently using the C language; Java would be even better.
    Other details: We're on linux, running OCS 9.0.4.2 on server as well as client (SDK). I've been trying the Windows as well as the linux SDK - same result.
    Thanks,
    Erik Hagen

    All,
    Hi again - summer holidays didn't help... the problem with CSDK_SetIdentity remains the same as noted in my original posting. This time, I've also been testing on another installation. The only special config I've done is "allowsysoplogon_capi = TRUE" in unison.ini, which was necessary to be able to logon as SYSOP.
    Please let me know if anyone of you actually used the SDK to connect the way I'm trying, or if you have other hints. Sample working Java code?
    I'm pasting my code below for you to see exactly what I'm doing:
    CAPI_SetConfigFile("capi.ini", "con.log");
    stat = CSDK_CreateSession(CAPI_FLAG_NONE, &gSession);
    if (stat == CAPI_STAT_OK)
    stat = CSDK_ConnectAsSysop ( gSession, CAPI_FLAG_NONE, "akoraapp.asker.kommune.no","1","akora77" ) ;
    else
    CSDK_GetStatusString (stat, &errorName);
    printf("You were unable to create session \n");
    exit(1);
    CSDK_GetStatusString (stat, &errorName);
    /* Establish connection to calendar server */
    printf(">>%s\n", errorName ? errorName : "(null)");
    if (stat == CAPI_STAT_OK)
    printf("\nCongratulations! You are now connected to your calendar server.\n");
    else
    printf("You were unable to connect to the server\n");
    CSDK_DestroySession(&gSession);
    exit(1);
    sprintf(p_filename,"userlist.txt");
    if ((fileid = fopen(p_filename,"r")) == NULL)
    printf("Unable to Open userlist.txt ....");
    while (fgets(p_buffer, BUFFER_SIZE, fileid))
    stat = CSDK_SetIdentity(gSession,p_buffer, CAPI_FLAG_NONE);
    if (stat == CAPI_STAT_OK)
    printf("\nIdentified.\n");
    else
    printf("Unable to set Identity for %s", p_buffer);
    CSDK_GetStatusString (stat, &errorName);
    printf(">>%s\n", errorName ? errorName : "(null)");
    continue;
    Thanks, Erik

  • Is it possible to sync mailboxes between iMac and iPad

    I am trying to sync up my mailboxes between my iMac and my iPad.  Using Apple Mail App on both devices.  Using non-mac email on App.  The only place I have previous messages stored is on my iMac. Is there a way to sync them up?

    The folders that you set up in Apple Mail on the Mac are for local storage only and will not sync to the iPad.
    If you had an IMAP email account, any folders that you had in the account on the server would have already synced to the iPad when you created the email account in the mail app.
