Synchronizing multiple Mac Mini Server Open Directories across branch offices
Greetings from Central Asia -
The non-profit that I work with has been undergoing a long-overdue IT upgrade and we recently purchased some Mac Mini Servers (still running Snow Leopard Server) to act as the core of our network across our 3 offices in 3 different cities.
We have employees moving between offices regularly, so I'm hoping to find a way to synchronize our user database between our head office and our branch offices instead of creating separate databases in each location. We use RADIUS and pfSense with a CaptivePortal for controlling who has internet access as well as have file shares, so keeping user database management to a minimum is an ideal.
I come from a mostly Microsoft Domain background with regards to these things so I'm not entirely sure where to start. Hopefully some hopeful folks here will steer me in the right direction!
I have a (mostly) unrelated question though - OS X Server seems to have two separate user databases - the "local" DB and the LDAP/OpenDirectory DB. Is there a way to make these function together? When creating users and assigning them to groups, which is best practice to use? How do I give an LDAP/OD user login rights to the server?
Thanks in advance,
Tim
I would prefer to keep the two databases seperate, with the local database providing a few specific users with access when OD is inaccessable.
The local database is basically a self-hosted LDAP server.
The local and OD databases do function with the appearance of one single user account presentation at login and for typical operations, too.
Do keep all of the usernames unique; the local users, as well as the OD users.
For your configuration, the usual pattern here is one or more open directory replicas in each lobe of the network.
These replicas then coordinate with the master copy among themselves. You'll have one distributed copy, but the lobes won't be tied to authentication across what may or may not be an entirely stable network; users authenticate off the local replica.
There are also folks that use Microsoft Active Directory as the back-end for Mac OS X, as well; there are various means to this end, including what is known as the magic triangle configuration.
As for learning more about OD, I'd read the Snow Leopard Server Open Directory administration documentation as a starting point. The Lion Server documentation is thin.
The Mac Enterprise Mailing List archives can also be enlightening; that's probably the most concentrated source of information on more complex management environments.

Mac Mini Server - Best Way to Enable Multiple Users to Connect via Remote Access Concurrently?
Hi
Is there a limit on the number of users that can connect simultaneously via remote access to a Mac Mini running Mac Mini Server? If you have the server application on your Mac mini there is an upper limit but it is so high that I wouldn't worry about it. Depending on how you will be using the server and what it will be supporting there is a practical limit based on performance not software. If you reach the limit of satisfactory performance, the solution is adding another Mac mini server.

Mac Mini Server Setup for Print Shop
Hello!
I run a digital printing company. We get lots of large files from customers all day long. So far, we have been using Dropbox as our file server. It's great in every way except for speed. Because we run about 7 computers in our shop, every time we add a client file to Dropbox it has to sync with the internet plus those 7 computers. When we get the exceptionally large file from a customer, our network is toast and it can sometimes take us hours to recover.
I tried the OSX Mini Server route months ago but because I found it difficult to get it to do what I wanted, I turned it into one of our production computers. However, I'm getting more desperate and I want to put more research in to figure out what I need to do. The primary problem we had with the Mac Mini Server was that we could not easily remotely access it. In fact I couldn't figure that out at all. That's one thing that's super nice about Dropbox is that if our designers go home and want to work on a file in the evening, they already have it on their computer with Dropbox.
Is there an easy way I can accomplish this with an in house server? I need the following:
Easy access to files in-house
Easy access to files remotely
Fast speed, no bogging down the network
Off-site regular backups (in case the computer gets stolen or our shop burns down)
We run 3 of Apple's latest Airport Extreme's, one in each main room. And all the computers connect via ethernet for optimal speed. This may sound to simple, but have you considered SFTP instead of dropbox? Let people pull the file when they need it as obviously the large files syncing across multiple mac bringing your network to a halt is not working. You could monitor the incoming FTP with Hazel and push "small" files to Dropbox, but put the large files that cause the problem in a FTP folder for people to pickup when needed. That way you get the best of both worlds. Maybe combine that with selective sync on the dropbox client.
As for remote access to the Mac Mini, that is actually quite easy. In the sharing preference panel select screen sharing then Click on Computer Settings, Set a VNC password and check "anyone can request permission to control of the screen". Open up the ports on your router and set up the port forwarding and you should be able to connect with a VNC client. It works remotely either with the screen sha
Good luck. -
Is the Snow Leopard Mac Mini Server the right solution for my office?
I'm the de facto "sysadmin" for my small office, which usually just means I set up the wireless, configure network printing, troubleshoot little issues with Mail and MS Office products.
Currently, we have 4 employees all on iMacs. We share files through a slapped-together setup, where there is a public folder on our owner's iMac and we all share files there. There are a few problems with this:
- If the owner's computer is off, no-one can get to the shared files.
- The owner's computer has had some strange "permissions" issues so sometimes files in the "Public" shared folder end up being read-only, or "read & write" for "nobody".
- A 5th employee telecommutes on an iMac, and can't access the shared folder or files.
So, we're considering getting a Mac Mini Server to do file storage and sharing, both locally and with telecommuting employees (of which there may be more in the future).
- Is this the best solution to our needs - really just file sharing, no web hosting or anything like that?
- What level of access control / authentication can we do on the Server? For example, could we have a password protected folder on the server to restrict access?
- Would we need to upgrade our standard DSL service if we want to share files on the server with folks not on the local network?
- Am I biting off more than I can chew here, given that my technical knowledge is slim but I am the most computer-literate of anyone in the office, so I will need to trouble-shoot any issues that come up with the server? For your stated goal, network-attached storage (NAS) or an always-on Mac client would be a simpler solution. Either preferably with RAID, and with provisions and storage for periodic archives.
A Mac OS X Server box is overkill. The Mac client boxes have 10-client sharing.
If you want single-signon and shared directory services and mail and web and various of the other pieces and services that are available within, then you can grow into a Mac OS X Server box.
A server is rather more to manage, regardless of what you choose. You're getting DNS and networking and other core pieces, minimally, and you're also responsible for many of the configuration settings and services and details that a client box receives from a server box. And you're definitely dealing with protections and such across multiple boxes.
For some other perspectives, there are various previous discussions of this posted around the forums. A search that includes NAS should kick over a few of these; this is a typical low-end alternative to running a server. -
Mac Mini Server with Windows installed?
I have a windows application for a business otherwise all mac OS. Want to run the windows app on a mac mini server allowing access from multiple workstations. Desire to not committ entire mac mini server to windows so will need to partition I assume. Any thoughts?
You could try virtualizing the windows machine
Virtual box is free I can't remember if it's free for commercial
use
Or VMware or parallels
You could also try wine it's open source
And allows running of (some) windows programs on Mac
I've had mixed results with wine I haven't used it for ages
Personally I think virtualizing would be the way to go
Virtualizing would allow you to have snapshots and
Backups would be somewhat easier
If your unfamiliar with virtualizing
It basically runs a compete OS as software on the host machine
You can virtualize osx server on osx server if you desired
Or most other OS, Linux, BSD, windows, windows server
You just need enough grunt hard drive space and ram to host the virtualized OS -
Mac mini server mid 2011 lion mouse pointer disappears after sleep
Hi,
I bought a mid 2011 mac mini server (quad core) running OSX Lion (10.7.2), and I use it with the magic trackpad. Sometimes (not every time) when I wake the computer from sleep (I let it sleep via the menu at night), the mouse pointer is not visible. I can use the trackpad, and move the mouse and click, only I cannot see where I click because the mouse pointer is not visible.
The batteries in the trackpad are OK.
When I plug in a USB mouse, I can move and click that too, but the mouse pointer is still invivible.
So it seems to be OSX related
The only thing that seems to help is to restart the system. After reboot the mouse is back as normal. Still this is very annoying as it makes sleep quite useless.
Anyone else suffering from this? Any solutions? Thanks.
Thanks,
GinoI also have this issue intermittantly but fairly often.
But sometimes the cursor comes back but the screen stays black except where the cursor has moved across, revealing the screen, a bit like using the spraycan tool in MacPaint years ago.
And to top it off I have a problem with sleep making all the open apps try to quit, but one is always unable to, and it seems to lock everthing up until I wake up the mac, and then all the apps that were open do resume, but in the meantime any TV programs that should have recorded (by waking up mac to record) using my Elgato EyeTV have been missed ... -
Mac Mini Server Airport Express with Server Firewall Settings
I posted this in the Server forum, but I've had no responses so far - so I'll try it here instead! Any help is appreciated...
I've got a new Mac Mini Server (mid 2010) with Snow Leopard Server v10.6 that I intend to use as a file server in the long term, and as my main computer replacing my old PC in the short term.
One of it's uses will be my iTunes server for my Airtunes network with two airport expresses.
When I disable the server firewall iTunes can connect to the airports with the check box in the 'multiple speakers' menu in iTunes. If I enable the firewall with the default settings of 'allow these ports' I cannot. I have used the Apple document on well known TCP and UDP ports to open for Apple software packages with particular attention to streaming audio / iTunes etc. Still doesn't allow the speakers to be selected in the 'multiple speakers' check box.
I also tried the 'allow all traffic' option for the firewall, again no connection to the remote speakers happened. If I turn off the firewall it all works fine. It seems that there are some ports that need to be open in order to establish the connection - I just don't know what they are.
Does anyone know of the appropriate ports to open? I tried searching the forums and I did try some of the suggestions for port 5000, 6000, 6001 etc but it doesn't make any difference!
Thanks in advance...
Message was edited by: Not_SoI found this works too. Though I came about this a slightly different way.
I moved over to Airfoil as Airtunes didn't work without the firewall and Airfoil did. I then had problems with Airfoil not reconnecting to the remote speakers when you cycled the power on them, I don't want all of my remote speakers powered all of the time. They were set to automatically connect, yet they refused connection a couple of times before connecting, which meant logging into the mini and reconnecting manually, which wasn't what I wanted to do. During an email conversation with Rogue Amoeba I sent them a debug logfile - they pin-pointed it as a connection denial with IPv6 addressing.
Once I had that info, I disabled IPv6 for my network adaptors and Airfoil worked and reconnected fine even when airport expresses are power cycled. I then tried Airtunes again and now the speakers can be connected. It's down to the first choice for connections is IPv6, if this is not available it's IPv4.
It's definitely a bug with the IP6FW control and link-local traffic.
Hope this helps. -
How to set up my mac mini server to use two drives seamlessly?
I have a mid 2010 mac mini server, with OSX Lion installed. It has dual 500gb hard drives.
I've been moving all my important files to it, and I've always assumed that once I filled one disc, it would seamlessly transfer over to the other and continue backing up. This does not seem to be the case.
I'm at roughly 495gb of data, and when I try to move a 10gb file onto my server, it tells me that I don't have enough disc space to continue the operation.
What can I do to make use of both drives?
-ThanksIt sounds like what you're asking for is to have the two drives in a RAID 0, where the two 500 Gb drives look like a single 1 Tb drive. I'm not sure the exact procedure for installing RAID 0 on a mini's internal drives, but the process would involve backing up, reconfiguring for RAID (which destroys all data,) restoring data from the backup, and more risk than I would personally find acceptable. I'd expect to lose a full day with the backup and restore steps. I can guarantee, there will be pain.
Instead, I'd suggest looking at what's consuming the 500Gb, and seeing if there are particular folders that can be moved. For example, a shared folder is pretty easy. Copy it over. In file sharing setup, edit the share to point to the new location. Make sure remote users disconnect, and reconnect to the "new" share. When you're happy there is no data loss, delete the old location.
User's home directories can also move, but the process has a few more steps, and depends on how the accounts are built (local vs. OD)
If the majority of the data is in a single "your backup files" folder, shared or otherwise, then I would just set up a second folder on the second drive and write to it, leaving the first alone. If it is truly a backup, then you could make the first folder read-only at this point for extra protection. If you go the 2 folder route, keep in mind your boot drive is operating with 1% free space, I like my drives to have at least 15% free, and OS drives more like 25% (you'll find some range in recommended %-free, but most will agree 1% is too little) so move SOME stuff to the new folder, before closing the old. -
Please help me decide on a Mac mini server or MacBook Pro i7 for Logic
Hi folks,
I've really taxed my brain trying to figure out what's the smartest way to go. I'd love to know what any of you think I should do.
My current setup:
2007 MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz Core 2 Duo
2GB Ram
FSB 667 MHz
M-Audio ProFire 610
WD-Passport external drive for samples and audio files
Logic 8 (looking to upgrade to 9)
Record 1.5
Various AU plugins including Omnisphere, Miroslav Philharmonic, Amplitude 2, FM-8, BFD 2 and Korg Legacy Analogue
Final Cut Studio (latest version) for modest HD editing but sometimes multiclips as well
I tend to use lots of tracks - around 10 vocals, 4 guitars and lots of software instruments.
As you can imagine, Omnisphere runs like a dog past 2 instances and BFD practically makes everything grind to a halt.
Since going to Record 1.5, rewiring also seems to be unusably slow.
I'd love a new iMac or Mac Pro but I make several plane journeys to visit my Mum in another country. My solution has to be mobile, although I have got monitors, a keyboard and mouse that I can use at my Mum's.
As far as I can see, there are 2 options:
1
A new MacBook Pro 2.66 Ghz i7
2
A Mac Mini Server 2.66 Ghz Core 2 Duo
Physically, the Mac Mini is the better option:
- much lighter in my hand luggage so I could take it in addition to my existing MacBook Pro.
- more USB ports
My worries with getting a Mac Mini are:
- Is it powerful enough or at least significantly better than my MacBook Pro?
- Will it run the latest version of Final Cut Studio (a little off-topic, I know but I couldn't seem to find any straight answers elsewhere).
- Is it noisy when under a heavy workload?
- There is no Superdrive so can I use my MacBook Pro to install the software DVDs across a network?
Thanks for reading this. Let me know what you think.
Kind regards,
SteveThe mini will be about as powerful as your current MBP. You could have more RAM in the mini, 2 GB is certainly not enough for any serious work.
People on this list were initially(LP 9.0.0) underwhelmed by the MBP i7 dual core, it is a step up from your older MBP, but don't expect miracles. Get lots of RAM/a SSD for optimum performance.
9.1.3 may have improved performance, not sure,
Fast and relatively cheap: iMac i7 quad core. Not very portable, though.
Not ideal either is your M-audio interface, its drivers are below par making your Mac sweat more than necessary.

Monitor Not Going To Sleep on Mac Mini Server With Lion
Summary: I am attempting to configure a Mac Mini Server that runs OS X Lion. This machine was originally shipped with OS X Lion; it is not an upgrade. My current specific problem is that my Viewsonic VX2835wm monitor will not go to sleep when the minutes setting on the Display Sleep setting for Energy Saver has been reached. Instead, the screen goes blank for a couple of seconds and is replaced with a blank blue backlit monitor. (Ironcially, the display sleep menu cautions: "Never letting your display go to sleep may shorten its life".) I very much want and need the ability to have my monitor go to sleep so as to save energy and to extend the monitor's life for as long as possible.
Additional Background: I have had a couple of calls with Mac support and they have been unable to tell me whether this is a "design feature" or a flaw in the Lion OS because they have had no similar reports and they do not have the latest hardare available running Lion Server to test to see if this happens with other monitors. (They also, of course, don't have the VX2835wm monitor.)
I do, however, know the following:
(1) My HDMI monitor is connected to my Mac mini via a DVI KWM switch (ATEN CS1784) such that the HDMI output from my Mac is converted to DVI (using the DVI to HDMI converter that came with my Mac Mini) and is then run through the KVM and then converted back to HDMI (using a full pin DVI to HDMI cable). However, I have tested the monitor with a straight HDMI to HDMI cable running directly from the Mac Mini to the monitor and it has not changed anything.
(2) The Lion operating system correctly recognizes (in Hardware / Displays) the model of my ViewSonic monitor.
(3) I have a MacBook Pro running Leopard (OS X 10.5.8) that is connected to the same monitor through the same KVM switch (by way of a BookEndz docking station) which properly shuts down the monitor when there has been no activity for however many minutes are set in the Display Sleep setting under Energy Saver. (Indeed, all I want is the same functionality on my Mac Mini that I have enjoyed for the last two years with this MacBook Pro.)
(4) When fully connected to the KVM, if I switch from my Mac Mini to my MacBook Pro and my Mac Mini display goes to sleep while I am working on my MacBook Pro, when I switch back to the Mac Mini, my monitor backlight will be off (and the power light will be standby yellow rather than the blue on) until I wake my computer up by touching the mouse of keyboard. I wonder if this may mean that the Mac Mini's signalling of the change in status from on to standby is somehow dysfunctional.
(5) Shutting down the server functions (and other open applications) has no effect.
I would greatly appreciate feedback from anyone out there running a Mac Mini with Lion regarding whether or not their monitors go into standby mode when the Display Sleep time is reached (please note whether or not you are running the Server or Client version, whether or not it is a new install or upgrade, and what monitor you are using).
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help. No, I didn't solve the problem. The monitor still goes to sleep with WIndows but not with my Mac Mini. About 8 months ago I basically wore out the power switch on my monitor so I bought a wireless power switch to shut it off at the outlet. The VX2835wm monitor itself is now starting to fail as well-- a couple of times it's gone through a weird sequence of flashing screen colors on power up and ended up in an overscan mode (that took me for ever to figure out how to fix). I have decided to replace my VX2835wm with a Dell u2412m once it fails for good partly because I really want to keep the 16:10 resolution (very hard to find these days) and partly because I want to see if a different make of monitor will go to sleep properly based upon my Mac Mini power down settings.

FileMaker Server problem on Mac Mini Server - Mac Mini won't boot
I just installed a brand new Mac Mini Server today, and also FileMaker Server 11. A first-timer for both Mac OS X Server and FileMaker Server, I made an error as explained below, and right now I don't know how to get back on track with the system. It won't boot.
So, how did this happen?
At first everything was proceeding according to plan. I configured the pre-installed Mac OS X Server on the Mac Mini with users, groups and services. This was tested from clients and this seemed to work just fine. Then I installed and configured FileMaker Server. This was also tested from a client, and the example database that came with FMS was served up just fine.
The problem arose when I tried to install my existing FileMaker databases. I simply checked to see where in the file system the example database was located, and then copied my old databases to that location (I think it was Library > FileMaker Server > Data > Databases or something close to it - can't check it now...). I had the FileMaker Server Admin Console running, and hit the Refresh button hoping that this would make FileMaker Server find the databases.
This was my first error. I should have read ahead in the instructions to see that one is supposed to use an Upload Database assistant instead...
What happened when I hit refresh was that the FileMaker Server Admin Console became completely unresponsive with a spinning ball as cursor. I left it for about an hour hoping it would terminate, but gave up and tried to shut it down. It wouldn't close, so I force quit it from the Finder. Then I tried to shut down FileMaker Server, but I needed to force quit this as well. After this I thought it would be best to reboot the Mac Mini, so I shut it down, but now it won't even boot, it just stays on the screen with the spinning wheel for ever!
I have tried all the keyboard options while booting, but nothing seems to help. In safe mode, the grey progress bar just grows to about one third, then disappears and leaves the eternally spinning wheel.
The server version of the Mac Mini doesn't have an optical drive, only two internal hard drives. I tried to reinstall from scratch using the optical drive on another Mac on the network. The startup disk appeared when I tried to boot the Mac Mini holding down the option key, and after about 20 minutes or so of the spinning wheel I could actually access the discs. I started by running Disk Utility to check disk permissions. There were a lot of repairs concerning permissions and groups, especially on "Library". It said "ACL differs on Library", I don't know what this is but this was repaired. I then ran Repair Disk. The volume appeared to be OK.
When I tried to reinstall Mac OS X Server however, this failed with the message
"You can't upgrade this version of Mac OS X because a newer version is installed. Mac OS X Server couldn't be installed on this disk." I don't know how this can be, but I may have run software update earlier today.
What should I try next? Should I erase the primary HD and try to install again? Or should I install the system software on the secondary HD? Or should I just try to reboot as is in the hope that the disk permission repairs did the trick...?
Any helpful pointers would be greatly appreciated!Hello there, I came across your post when browsing the forum for passive advice. I am in the same boat as you and am a first timer for both of these tools. I work for a company who now needs to expand its network and database capabilities. I have been assigned this task and these are the tools i have opted for. I have not yet purchased them and i am pleased to find someone who has my desired setup. Could you please advise on the simplicity of the setup and whether an advanced knowledge is required.
I want to use it in a mixed operating system environment. Is this possible?

Maybe you have an old version of Melodyne or a demo version? I'd remove it and see if that fixes it anyway - not entirely sure, maybe someone else has more of a clue - there must be a solution anyway, so this response will take it back to the top. -
I am looking for step by step instructions to configure my mac mini server to support the following:
1. Central itunes server for all my devices (ipad, ipod, iphone, etc.)
2. Central file server so that my windows devices can save and retrieve data from the central system (the mac does not show up in the network for the windows systems - all running windows XP or 7)
Thanks,
KeithYou will need to enable file sharing in System Preferences
as well as setting up sharing and permissions for the
directories that you want shared. You may also want to
setup a non-administrative user or allow limited guest
access. The user would require entering a user name and
password to make the connection, but would allow remotes
to change files, if set up tat way.
As for serving iTunes media, better to post in the iTunes forum. -
Can I run 4 super drives with my Mac Mini Server
I have Lion Server downloaded to my Mac Mini (set up as a TV server) and would like to be able to access the 4 USB Super Drive ports via other Mac Mini's in other rooms, 2 Apple TV's if possibe through Apple TV software and maybe Macbook Pro via AirPlay. Are these things possible. The Mac Mini Server is the Best Home television distribution network. Cheaper hardware and fast internet connection based on devices. The above is my goal.
My individual questions...
Can I place 4 Super Drives in the 4 USB slots and run them?
What is the most effiecent way to be able to server those drives on ONLY my Apple Network (other Mac Mini and 2 Apple TV's)
Can I access multiple drives at once from different devices on my Apple Network?
Can I restrict access to teen and child users based on the TV Rating displayed on DVD in Super Drive? (ex: iTunes recognizes CD's by times of songs and digital fingerprint when I input my Store bought CD or adds it to the Database if its a new title.)
These would help so much!
Thanks,
Stefan
Have any questions on how to turn your Mac into a home Multimedia System, ask.no
a dvd drive can never be shared over a network in order to play the dvd drives content
the dvd encryption makes this imposible
you have to rip (which is illegal) each dvd disc to a computer in order to do what you wish to do
and it's not an apple thing it's the case no matter which computer you own
