Synchronizing user data between Laptop and Desktop

We have a Macbook and an iMac. While my kids and wife went to visit the Grandparanets I lent them my Macbook, used SuperDuper to create a copy of my Laptop's drive and booted it on the iMac (ok, that is pretty cool!).
All worked very well and now they are returning and I need to merge the information on the Macbook itself and the SuperDuper drive I have been using on the iMac.
There are multiple user accounts on each and all that was really added on the Macbook would be photos and movies and iTunes music one 3 of the accounts.
Is there an easy way to sync user accounts between two computers? I am quite familiar with .mac and syncing wha I would call preferences. It cannot handle stuff like synching iTunes, iPhoto or iMovie though.
Appreciate any suggestions
JIm

Well ... here is what I ended up doing. Hope it helps someone
Once the laptop came home:
1. I made a SuperDuper image just in case (to another Firewire drive partition)
2. Then I logged into the user accounts on each and used Backup to backup Home, iLife ... for each user on the laptop that logged in while they were gone (I asked them)
3. Then I used SuperDuper to overwrite the hard drive on the laptop using the SuperDuper image on the Firewire drive.
4. Then I logged into each account on the laptop where I backuped up data and restored it.
It took a little while but everyone is happy and has their data

  • Moving Music Videos between laptop and desktop

I have purchased 4 music videos from iTunes store. They are on my laptop. I was travelling on business and wanted to try out the new music videos.
Now that I am home and using my Dual G5 desktop, how do I move or share these videos off my laptop top to my desktop? Is there any way to sync two iTunes libraries to keep them the same. Since I own both laptop and desktop seems rather stupid to not be able to do this.
I really just started using iTunes when the video part was released, so I maybe overlooking something really easy to fix this issue.
I have turned on iTunes music library sharing on the laptop but only audio music is shown when viewing from my iTunes desktop. No videos are listed. I event made a playlist folder on my laptop called Videos and copied the videos into this list.
The list "Video" shows up when looking from my desktop, but no vidoes are listed in the playlist.
    thanks

    Bill,
"Is there any way to sync two iTunes libraries to keep them the same. Since I own both laptop and desktop seems rather stupid to not be able to do this."
I have the very same situation as many others do, so I've asked the very same question to an Apple Genius at the Manhattan Village Store in CA, and the answer is no. Why? You can have multiple iPods connected to a single computer, but not multiple computers connected to a single iPod. The reason for that is DRM.
Your best bet is to keep both libraries synched using apps like "You Synchronize" or "Folder Synchroniser", this way you'll have the same library across both Macs, and you can use any one as a Master for your iPod. Works for me!

  • Syncing Lightroom between laptop and desktop

I  did large, two day studio shoot last week.
I do the majority of  my work on my desktop, and for the first time I used a laptop for this  shoot.
I used an exteranl hard drive that I plugged into the laptop, and I kept my catalog and all my images on that external hard drive. I shot tethered directing into Lightroom. I did a little  work at the shoot, changing things in the develop module, cropping, and  adding metadata.
Now, I'm at home, I've got my external hard  drive still plugged into my laptop, and on my  laptop I selected all my images and chose 'Save Metadata to file'  (command S) so all my changes would transfer.
A window popped up that said 'One or more of these  photos has been changed in an external application. Should Lightroom  overwrite the Settings on disk??' I then have the option of hitting  'cancel' or 'Overwrite Settings'.
I'm confused by this as I have  only amended these images in Lightroom. If I say 'Overwrite Settings',  will I loose information? For example, every image has been cropped, but  I would like to be able to retain access to the full image, and I'm  nervous if I hit overwrite settings I'll lose this.
    Am I being crazy?
    Ellen

    Ellen,
This is a long-standing bug that seems to get better but never completely go away.  There is probably one or two images that LR "thinks" have been changed from somewhere outside of LR and when you select all images it is just telling you that at least one is in this state.  Unfortunately there is no way I know of to sort or automatically isolate images with potential metadata conflicts except to browse the grid display looking for conflicting icons.
I usually select less than all (say 40 or 50 at a time) and keep saving until I isolate the image or images that is in question such that I save data to all the other images that are not in conflict first, then attack the error images one at at time.  In all cases though, I end up overwriting the data since I trust the database of LR to have stored the most correct data.  I just want to know what images were at risk so I can review them immediately after overwriting the data to make sure indeed they are alright.  I generally use a temporary quick collection to isolate them.
The good news is I have never had a result that required me to go back in and re-develop an image.  The bad news is I still am not comfortable hitting "overwrite" after selecting all images and just letting it rip.  Hmmm ...

  • Share one copy between laptop and desktop Macs?

I intend to do recording with Logic Express on location using my MacBook, then to transfer the projects to my desktop Mac with the good studio monitors and work on them at home. Do I have to buy a 2nd copy of LE8 to do this legally?

The package showed up today, and yes, it explicitly states in the license that I can install one copy on my laptop and one on my desktop.
I wasn't sure if the fine print differed across the Atlantic. Thanks Fox!

  • Having problems transfering music to my Nano between laptop and desktop.

Recently my desk top PC broke down. I then got a Nano for my birthday (cool) so bought some podcasts and tracks from i-store and downloaded a small proportion of my cd collection using my laptop. For some reason it takes a couple of hours to download a cd into i-tunes. For that reason, now my PC is back with me I downloaded the rest of my cd collection onto the hard drive then transfered the music into the recently installed i-tunes.
Here's the problem, when I connected the nano to the PC for the first time I was asked if I wanted to replace the present library (laptop) with the new PC library. I want both as I don't see how to get the bought and paid for stuff off the laptop, onto my PC and then on to the Nano.
I can understand why this may of happened as you could just plug your i-pod/nano etc into someone elses laptop and bootleg their music but I don't want to have tp pay for my downloads twice. Can anyone help me out?

your iphone can only synce with one pc at a time, but when you want to add songs to your iphone for another pc, and you don't want to lose the data that you already have,
1- on your music store creat a new list(on your iphone)
    2-press synce
3- the songs that are on the pc, drag them to the play list you created and synce.

  • Tranferring video between laptop and desktop

Is it possible to -via a USB/Firewire- to transfer some FCE work from my laptop directly to my Imac or do I need to pop it onto a DV tape and load it into the Imac?
    Thanks.

You can transfer files from one Mac to another via Firewire using what's called Target Disk Mode.
To do this, power on your iMac while holding down the letter T key. Keep holding down the T key until you see the standard yellow firewire logo appear on the iMac's screen (that's all that will be on the screen, just the firewire logo.) Then connect your laptop to your iMac with a Firewire cable and start up your laptop. Your iMac will show up on your laptop's desktop just as if it were another disk drive. From there you can use the Finder (on your laptop) to copy files & folders to your iMac.
When you're done, shut down your laptop. Then turn off your iMac by holding down the power button until it shuts off. Then turn off the power to both Macs. Then unplug the firewire cable.
    Voila ... done.
ps. This is not a hack ... this is a standard Apple procedure. And, obtw, it cannot be done via USB

  • Coordinating Aperture between laptop and desktop

I'm working on a photo archival project that involves several thousand images, mainly scanned.
I do my scanning and image cleanup on my desktop (a 24"3.06 GHz iMac with 4 GB RAM). Then import the images into my Aperture project.
However, when I am meeting with colleagues working on this project, I need to use a laptop (Macbook Pro 2.4 GHz, 2gb RAM) so we can meet outside my office.
Here is my question: how can I keep the copies of the Aperture project on both computers reasonably synchronized?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Rich

I have a single Aperture library that I move between my desktop G5 and my laptop MBP.
The library resides on a portable 2.5" drive (200 GB) that has both eSATA and USB 2.0 connections. On my G5 I get the speed of eSATA, and when I'm using my laptop, the USB speed is tolerable.
The great thing is, I keep some images IN the library (managed), and most of the images on another, much larger drive (referenced). Any projects I'm actively working on, I can keep the images managed in the Aperture library, so I have them on both my desktop and laptop. The rest of the images I simply "push out of" the library and reference them on the big hard drive, which stays attached to the desktop G5.
For me, this arrangement works very well. If I am on a trip, shooting, I create a new project and Aperture "manages" my images in the library. When I get home, I tell Aperture to "push" the images in the new project out to the big hard drive, and "reference" the images. It works quickly and easily.
Perhaps something similar would work for you?
    Enjoy!

  • How do I manage User folders on laptop and desktop?

I've had an iMac for a year and now I'm adding a laptop for travel reasons. I would like to know the best way to keep the User folders identical on both machines? I don't want to use something clunky like a back up drive or drag and drop across a network. Thanks.

There are a couple of ways, one which uses a third-party app - http://www.econtechnologies.com/pages/cs/chrono_overview.html - and one which is available with no other software other than what's built-in to your Mac - although it does involve using another drive - http://www.maciverse.com/two-macs-and-keeping-things-together.html.

  • Transferring photos between a laptop and desktop

I am using Lightroom 3 on a laptop and desktop.  I am trying to export photos with adjustments that I have made to my desktop.  I have selected the photos as tried to export as a catalog and have checked the boxes for export negative files and include available previews.  I saved the files to a portable hard drive and then tried to import the files into lightoom on my desktop.  Only the original photos (with no adjustments show up).  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Instead of importing the files try importing the catalog.  The catalog contains your information about the adjustments.  The catalog you exported can be moved to your desktop machine and you can use your master catalog on you desktop to import the record from it.

  • Can I synchronise laptop and desktop files?

We have a Powerbook G4 and will soon be getting a MacPro desktop. Both will at that point have Leopard. How can I automatically synchronise some or all of the user data between the two machines? Are there simpler solutions than having the MacPro run the Server OS X?
    Thanks
    Nic

But won't Migration Assistant only copy files, not synchronise automatically chosen files/folders between two machines? (I am thinking of something like Briefcase from those other people.)

  • When frequently switching between mobile and desktop view

When I frequently switching between mobile and desktop view I have to open the layers every time since they get closed/collapsed. Adobe may need to fix it for the next version.

You can use CTRL+# to switch between Code and Design View.
By the way, this is the Dreamweaver Application Development forum which deals with questions about using server-side scripting languages like PHP or ColdFusion. General Dreamweaver questions should be posted in the regular Dreamweaver General Discussions forum.
And while I´m at it: please use descriptive headlines such as "how to switch between Code and Design View" for your posts -- mentioning your screen name "Goula129" is not helpful to other users.

  • Should I use a macbook pro as my laptop and desktop, or have a macbook pro and an iMac?

i was wondering if i should use my macbook pro as a laptop and desktop, or if i should go ahead and buy a mac desktop too?

Just look at how many posts are on this forum, let alone the Boot Camp forum, about Windows on a Mac.
Got to any of the virtual machine software forums and take a look. Why do you thing there are 3 different virtual machine program available for the Mac to run Windows, let alone Apple's own Boot Camp system.
If it wasn't needed do you think Apple would have there own system for installing and running Windows on all Mac computers.
I personally don't know of any Mac users, and I know quit a few, that do not have a version of Windows installed on there Mac computers. Either in a boot camp partition or in one of the virtual machine programs.
There is some software that has just Windows versions. If you need that software and you own a Mac you need Windows to run it.

  • Users mapping between EP and ABAP system

    Hello
I'd like to ask for some guidance in my quest
    Current situation looks like this:
I've configured UME in AS Java to work with LDAP as read only data source. Then I've configured SPNego to run SSO - It works, users from MS AD can log into portal.
Now I have application in WD which authorizes via EP/AD - works fine.
And next step is users mapping between AD and ABAP backend (serving some BAPI's for WD app)
I've found a bunch of help pages starting from
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nwce711/helpdata/en/0b/d82c4142aef623e10000000a155106/frameset.htm
But somehow it's quite complicated to achieve this mapping. I've tried to set RFC destinations logon type to user mapping but without succes.
Can anyone point me to some more clear example or give path to configure this scenario? Is there a way of configuring this with NWA or some XML file editing is required?
    Any help will be appreciated.
BTW: whole environment is in version 7.11
    Best regards
    Maciej

There is no equivalent to SPNEGO on the ABAP side.
If your goal is to propagate the user, then possible options are:
-> Wait for SAML 2.0 or invest now in a SAML 1.0 provider.
-> Use the same kerberos ticket for the EP as what your ABAP system will accept: route = SNC and 3rd party libraries.
-> Issue SAP logon tickets for the ABAP system from the EP, and use these in your WDA.
Another option is to expose the service with saved logon data in the ICF. If the service is just a wrapper for the BAPI, then you can also consider using trusted RFC between the service and the backend, but this might not be acceptable for your service.
I have only done experimental stuff with this and some of the above is not released yet. Also consider the consequences, even if it "does work"...
    Cheers,
    Julius

  • Synchronous message handling between OSB and MQ

    Hi,
I have a requirement to have a PS in OSB that gets some XML data from another application.
The PS implementation has to be synchronous.
    The interface is like
    External Application<->OSB PS<->MQ<->OSB <-> External Application
Can anyone help me with the request-reply implementation(i.e. synchronous call handling) between OSB and MQ.
    Required functionality :
OSB will get XML data from the external application, will do the data transformation to make it compatible with MQ interface and will then send data to MQ and will wait for the reply from MQ that it then sends back to the external application after transformation.
    Queries:
How to correlate two messages i.e. request msg to mq and reply msg from mq in OSB?
What kind of Proxy Service implementation is required to have such functionality?
If someone can help me with similar kind of implementation,it will be of great help to me.
    Thanks in advance

OSB support this pattern out of the box . You can implement the MessageID pattern as specified in this link:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13159_01/osb/docs10gr3/interopjms/MsgIDPatternforJMS.html
When you configure the business service to use MessageID as the correlation pattern, the following happens under the hood:
    1. Business service sends request to the MQ request queue. The MQ JMS provider sets the message ID on the message and this is returned to the bs. The business service also sets the reply queue details in the JMSReplyTo Header in the request.
    2. The business service then waits for a response message which has a correlationID equal to the messageID in the request message.
    3. The system which processes the request from the MQ should set the correlation ID of the response to the same value as the Message ID in the request.
    4. The business service process the reply if it is received before the timeout interval. No need to purge the queues for message arriving out after timeout since OSB does this automatically for you.
A point to note here is that if you deploy this in a cluster , you need to create 'N' local MQ queues for reply, where N is same as the number of managed servers in the cluster. Else you could lose replies in a scenario where the reply for a request sent by man server 'X" is processed by man server "Y". The request-response correlation tables are maintained internally on man server memory. Since Y had no clue of the requests sent in X it would just discard the reply received.
So create dedicate queues for each man server and specify them in the business service definition.
Another key thing for this to work would be to get right the MQ setup between the queue manager in OSB domain and the remote system which process the MQ requests. A simple setup would be for you to create all reply queues as local queues under your OSB queue manager and create only a transmission queue with the same name as your OSB queue manager in the remote system. You need to ask the remote system to do the MQOpen with the ReplyToQueue and ReplyToQM names for queue and queue manager names. This will put the replies to the transmission queue to your QM and through it can reach the right reply queue.
