Synchronizing with two computers

My computer crashed and having bought a new one,, i loaded the new iTunes 7 software and tried to synchronise with my iPod. The iPod (30 Gb with video) was synchronized with the crashed computer in an earlier version of iTunes and now would not allow me to synchronize with the new computer saying that it already has a connection with another computer. How do i get the tunes on my iPod into the iTunes 7 library onn the new computer??

If your iPod is set to update automatically you just need to take care when connecting to your new computer and an empty iTunes. When you get the message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No* (or "Cancel" if you are using iTunes 7). Pressing "Yes" (or Erase and Sync in iTunes 7) will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. In iTunes 7 Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Don't uncheck Sync Music it will be unchecked by default when you choose the manual setting: Managing content manually on iPod
You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward. As iTunes 7 is just out some of these may not have caught up with it yet though I haven't experienced any problems with the Mac software I use.
YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
iGadget Windows Only
iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
PodPlayer Windows Only
CopyPod Windows Only
There is a new function in iTunes 7 under File, "Transfer Purchases from iPod" which transfers iTMS purchases. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: How to use your iPod to move your music to a new computer
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

  • How to sync with two computers not at the same time, I'm registerd with one computer

How to sync with two computers (not at the same time), I'm registered with one computer and am trying to connect with second computer with same iPhone. To sync the first time with the second PC "Firefox Sync Option tells me Create New account or Connect, when I connect it gives me a Passcode and on iPhone it also gives me a Passcode, than how do I connect? Both the iPhone and PC gives me a Passcode and have now idea what to do with them.
Where do I find my Sync Key ? so I can install manually if it works ?

Use the Sync Key ''(Recovery Key)'' from the PC that you used to initially setup your Firefox Sync service, when setting up that 2nd PC with Sync. You need to use '''Add a device''' to setup the 2nd and subsequent devices on a Sync account. <br />

  • I got a new computer and now iTunes is telling me it can't sync with two computers

I got a new computer and now iTunes is telling me it can't sync with two computers, it's telling me it will erase what's on my iPad and re-sync. Will I lose my iPad data that's on it?

No - not at all. Look at that one app that I gave you the link for. That is supposed to transfer all of the iPad content to the new computer. I have no idea how much it costs, but it's worth a look. There are other out there as well. Google "apps to transfer iPad content to computer" or something to that effect. These apps claim to transfer everything.
Several things to remember - you can still transfer all of the iTunesicon tent that you purchased by using the Transfer Purchases option in iTunes. Just remember to turn off auto syncing before you do it. You will also have to authorize your new computer to transfer the purchase if you haven't done so already. From the iTunes menu on your computer go to Store> Authorize this computer.
Plus any apps or music that you have bought can be downloaded again at no charge with the cloud feature in the latest iPad iOS.
EDIT - I see that you did transfer the purchases. Look at one of those apps that I described and they should be able to get you set up. You should also invest in an external hardrive for backing up all of your computer content ... don't want this to happen again!

  • Using PalmVx with two computers

I have been using a PalmVx with my Desktop computer (WIN XP Prof) and also with my laptop (WIN XP Prof). I recently formatted the HDD of my laptop and have re-installed my palmOne software ver 4.1.4 on my laptop. While installing the palmOne software in my laptop when asked for <User Name> I gave the same Username as in my desktop computer. So now my laptop indicates the identical Username as my desktop computer.
My desktop computer is connected to the palm cradle using a serial connection while my laptop is connected through a Serial-to-USB adaptor to a USB port on my laptop.
I need to have all my data in my PalmVx transferred to my laptop, so I set all the conduits in my laptop to "Handheld overwrites Desktop" and carried out a Hotsync.
The Hotsync dialog that comes up on the laptop shows a UserName <blank> instead of the Username that I set (similar to the desktop).
Please advise how I can get all my data currently on my desktop and in my handheld into my laptop?
    TIA

Actually, there are several articles on the web about the fact that you CAN
synch the itunes with two computers. Music, Video, and Ringtones can be done from one computer, and Mail, Contacts, etc. can be done from a second computer.
Just do a Yahoo search on "synching iPhone with two computers."
If you are trying to do music from two computers, you are right, that will not work. There is a program, which I think the Yahoo search above will also uncover that allows you to do a "swap," where you can have the songs from one computer show up on the iPhone, and when you swap, the songs from the other computer show up. I am not sure if this utility survived the upgrage to version 2.0 of the softweare.

  • Using iPhone with two computers

    Home PC - MacBook Pro
    Work PC - Windows
    both running iTunes 7.7
My music is on my home Mac and I manually create playlists, add music etc.
With my 3G Nano, I can connect and listen to songs on my iPod from my work PC. I can't seem to do this with my iPhone - my PC sees the iPhone but all of the music is greyed out and cannot be selected.
Is it a limitation of the iPhone that I cannot use it with two computers in this way, or is it a configuration issue?
I would prefer not to have to buy a set of external speakers just to use my iPhone to play music at work.
    thanks

  • Working with two computers. One of them not working

I've been working with two computers. In one of them where I have already  installed several programs downloaded with the Adobe Application Manager, when I try to open a program is giving me a message to sign in for a 30 day trial of the program? Why is this happening?

  • Mighty mouse with two computers

Is there a way to pair a Mighty Mouse with two computers and to them switch back and forth between them easily? I realize I could unpair from one and then pair with the other, but I’m trying to use a Mighty Mouse in lieu of a KVM switch with a wired mouse.

Yes and no. It all depends on the device, and I can't speak from experience when it comes to the Mighty Mouse, but I can speak from experience with other Bluetooth devices.
You can pair a device with multiple computers, but you cannot use it with multiple computers simultaneously. When switching, you'll have to tell your computer to disconnect from the mouse before the other computer can connect to it. Since we're talking about a mouse, reconnecting the mouse might be a little tricky, if you want to use only one. Perhaps adding something like an Optimus Mini Three (or similar HID) with an AppleScript attached to one of the buttons to trigger mouse reconnection could work.
There are software based solutions to your problem, enabling you to connect any HID (Human Input Device) to your computer, and then use a virtual KVM over the network. I've seen a few pieces of software like this in the Apple Downloads Database, but I don't know if they're free.

You cannot transfer from the iPhone to the computer.
You must move the contents of your old computer to the new one directly.
Use an external hard drive perhaps or restore your old computer backup to your new computer.
The iPhone is not the source of your data, that is the computer, the iPhone is only a slave device to iTunes.

  • Synching I touch with two computers

I would like to know if it is possible to synch an itouch with two computers, without losing the music that is on the itouch. FYI: First computeris no longer operational due to a virus...
    Thanks

You can sync with only one computer.  However, you can manage music with multiple computers.  See:

  • Synch iPad with two Computers?

I have the iPad 3 Wi Fi genertion. Can this iPad be Synch to two Different computers. One computer has windows vista home premium and the other has windows XP Pro. If so, how is it accomplished? Thank you.

The key word in your question is the word "sync". The answer to your question is - No- you cannot sync to two different computers. Syncing with iTunes will transfer content from that iTunes library to the iPad. If you sync with another computer, iTunes will overwrite the iPad contents from the first iTunes library with the content from the second iTunes library.
You can use multiple computers for the purpose of putting music onto the iPad, but you cannot sync with two computers. You can read about that process here.

  • One wireless keyboard with two computers?

This has already been asked probably but there is no specific area for Apple's new wireless keyboard (aluminum).. so here it goes:
I have a desk with a MAC MINI and a monitor on it. (currently wired keyboard, wired mouse)
Planning to buy the wireless keyboard.
I also have an additional spare monitor on my desk so it would be nice if I could just plug that into my MACBOOK and use the wireless keyboard from the Mini to wake it from sleep.
Somehow tell the keyboard (and mouse...) to control the other computer
One keyboard and one mouse on desk -- two computers. Can this be done?
    Greg

I'm in the same boat with you on this one. I have to unpair it with one before it will pair with the other. Too much to fiddle with just to reduce clutter on the desk. I eagerly await someone's creative solution.

  • Syncing Contacts/Calendars with two computers?

    Hi,
I'm using my iPod touch more as a PDA than iPod and want to be able to sync my Contacts and Calendars with both my home Mac and work Mac. Right now I have it sort of working; at home I have it set to sync everything (Music, Movies, Photos, Info, etc.). On my work computer I have it just set to sync "Info".
The problem is that every time I plug it into the "other" computer, the Sync checkboxes for Contacts and Calendars are turned off. So I have to click them 'on' and hit "Merge" to merge the data.
That isn't a show-stopper, because it does work, but I'm wondering if there's a way to make those settings 'sticky' so I don't have to keep reselecting Sync. It's just more of a nuisance than anything...
    Thanks!

I guess this raises more questions for me. I tried synching contacts and calendars from the two computers, but with iTunes set for syncing different groups on each computer. That did not work - whichever groups were on the iPod from one computer disappeared and were replaced when I synced to the second computer.
The text you referred to implies (to me) that I can change or add contacts/events and they will be tracked on all 3 devices, but all 3 devices have to be syncing to all contacts and groups. Is this correct?
    Thanks again
If you originally chose to replace the contacts on the iPhone with contacts from the computer, the contacts will not be merged on the following syncs. You can reset the sync history on the computer before syncing, and then choose merge. This would make the contacts and calendars look the same on both devices.
If you want to have the same information on all three devices(or more), it would be better to setup an Exchange or MobileMe account.
