Syncing 2 ipads with different users

I play in a band using ipads ( 3rd gen) I want to sync the ipads (2) so we can share the same music simultaneously and change music using either as the control. Possible?

I said nothing about Airdrop. I said sync the two devices to the same computer.
One iPad can not sync directly to another iPad for any purpose whatever. However, as I am suggesting here, multiple iPads/iPods/iPhones can sync (wirelessly or via cable) to the same computer.

yes, just make sure you turn off auto-sync to keep everything organized before you try syncing

What you are entitled to is the MBP and the original OS that the MBP came with which is Lion and the associated applications.
In order to install Lion, you will have to boot your MBP with the OPTION COMMAND R keys held down. That will connect you to the Apple servers and they will check your MBP. A 4 option menu will appear. Select the Lion installation option and install Lion.
Now your MBP will be registered in your name and you may open your own Apple account. If you want Mt. Lion, then you will have to purchase it from the Apple online store.

You should be able to accept this message, it will cause existing music, photos (not camera roll) and videos (also excluding those in camera roll) to be removed and replaced with those from this computer. All other user data on the iPad will be unaffected.

The problem is that all services are bundled with your Apple ID ([email protected]):
Your iCloud account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Backups, etc.),
also iTunes & App Store purchases (Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc.),
and the iTunes Match services.
(I guess that all your devices - yours and your wife's are connected to one iTunes library, right?)
If you want that your wife gets her own iCloud account for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc. but gets also access to your media then you have two set up two things on her device:
iCloud (Settings > iCloud) with her account (e.g. [email protected])
and
iTunes & App Stores (Settings > iTunes & App Stores) with your account (e.g. [email protected]).
In this case she gets access to your library and could use the same iTunes Match account.

You can definitely have different sets of iPads with different apps loaded. When you "supervise" your iPads, you will see that on the left side of the Configurator window there is a "+" sign in the lower left corner. Click it to create a new device group. With this new device group you can choose what apps and configuration profiles you want to install on that group of iPads. Create as many groups as you want to customize the apps and profiles you want on them.

Uncheck the option to automatically sync new apps to the device.
Other than that, syncing is by device.
Connect one device, tell iTunes what to sync, then sync.
Connect second device, repeat.
Connect third device, repeat.

Yes, just plug it in to the computer, when iTunes is open in the second user account and you will be asked if you want to change the the sync settings on your mobile device.

When I use find file http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/30073/find-file (which does tend to find files that "Finder" can't), it's not coming up with any other itunes library files that have been modified in the past week, which I know it would have been - unfortunately, I don't have a very recent backup of the hard drive. It would be a few months old so it wouldn't have the complete library on it....any ideas? Transferring photos from your computer has nothing to do with your iTunes account/Apple ID.
Photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring photos from another, all photos on the iPad that were transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPad first - even if the photos were transferred from the old or different computer to the new computer being used for syncing.
When transferring photos from your computer, what is named the iPod Photo Cache is created on your computer for the photos that are transferred and why you see new photos being transferres are optimized before the actual transfer process. The iPod Photo Cache for these photos on the computer the photos were transferred from is not available on your new computer.
Since all photos on your iPad that were transferred from the old or different computer should remain on that computer, transfer the photos from that computer to your new computer. These photos on your iPad will be erased with the first sync but will be re-transferred along with a new iPod Photo Cache for these photos being created on your new computer.

The new iTunes has a somewhat different look from the previous version. You can get the old look back if you prefer it by doing View > Show Sidebar in iTunes. Or you can adapt to the new look.
