Syncing a mediathek between a MAC and a WIN-PC possible with Dropbox?

Hi everybody,
Is this a WIN or a MAC question? I try it here first... X)
I have a MAC at one place - and a WIN-PC at another place. Both have a Drobox-folder (Dropbox = a sync tool) to keep the data on them in sync.
That works like a charm, besides iTunes:
I would like to use the exact same iTunes mediathek on the WIN-PC and on the MAC.
(It must be a iTunes-based solution, as I would like to sync my iPhone on both locations with iTunes - so I would have fresh podcasts etc. going to AND coming from work, and do not need to think on which computer I include new Music, Apps etc.).
Physically I actually have the same mediathek files on both computers already - via Dropbox - but the location description in the iTunes library file is not matching:
MAC: <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Users/xxx/Dropbox/Music/iTunes/...</string>;
WIN: <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/C:/Users/xxx/Documents/My%20Dropbox/Musi /iTunes/...</string>;
So it does not work yet.
Is there a way to do what I want? (Like a script to fire up iTunes, that replaces the locations each time..?)
I assume there is quite some people with this problem...
Thank you very much for any help/hint!!
Best wishes,
Daniel

Hi,
I never really gave a final report to this question:
Things did not really work the way I wanted (having the libary file itself synced).
What I did in the end, was letting the media files sync via Dropbox (i.e., letting the iTunes Media Files folder of both computers point to the same folder in Dropbox).
I kept local library files for both computers, but used a HEX editor to change the library ID of one computer to the library ID of the other computer (so that my iPhone syncs to both computer). If you want to do this, there are several post on how to edit the library file with a HEX editor. For me, it did work with iTunes 9, it did not work with iTunes 10 (as far as I remember). So you might which to downgrade before attempting this.
Best wishes,
Daniel

  • Is there a way to Move files to the iCloud thus freeing up disk space on my Mac? Or does iCloud only sync (replicate) files between my Mac and the cloud?

Is there a way to Move files to the iCloud thus freeing up disk space on my Mac? Or does iCloud only sync (replicate) files between my Mac and the cloud? I want to free up disk space on my Mac and assumed that the icloud would be a good way to do this, but having 'moved' 70Gb of files to the iCloud drive (I've upgraded to 200Gb storage) my Mac is still nearly full and I've realised that it seems to just Sync files just like dropbox.

So, the big question is did the Apple guys confirm that this is how the new iCloud drive should be working?  I'm guessing, from your response, that this is indeed the case.  Are they going to fix this anytime soon?  I thought that this was a new function of the iCloud drive in Yosemite.
I just want an online storage facility to back up my photo & music collections.  I did look at Dropbox as they have a good deal going with their Dropbox Pro, however this is still just a sync service where the Master files reside on your local disk drive - although I have read that there may be a way to work around this.  Still not ideal.

  • Did Mountain Lion break calendar and note sync between the Mac and iPhone?

When I was running Lion, my calendars and notes synced properly between my Mac and iPhone (with notes going into Mail.app). After upgrading to Mountain Lion, the notes on my Mac were moved into Notes.app and my calendars appeared to be unharmed. I've recently noticed that neither my calendars nor my notes are syncing between my Mac and iPhone.
I use iTunes to sync my data (either via USB or WiFi) and have no interest in moving to iCloud. I have tried the suggestion of enabling iCloud sync on my iPhone, then disabling, as well as telling iTunes to overwrite the calendar data on my iPhone. Neither of these approaches has solved my sync problem.

I found a solution to my problem. Hopefully it helps someone else too.
I deleted the following file and folder:
         ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache
         ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Sync Changes/
When I synced my iPhone, I was presented with several sync conflicts to resolve. I resolved them and applied the changes immediately. Now my Mac and iPhone are in sync and I've confirmed that changes are syncing from my Mac to my iPhone (I'll confirm that it works the other direction tomorrow when I can look at my calendar at work).
This is the thread that helped me:

  • My icalendar is not syncing between my mac and iphone

My icalendar is not syncing between my mac and iphone.  Everything for icalendar and icloud is turned on for all devices.  PLEASE HELP

Settings>icloud.  Assuming you have already set up the connection to icloud (ID, password), then turn on Calendars on that screen.
If they don't appear, then log into icloud.com using a computer's browser and look at the calendars page.  If empty, then you are not syncing calendars from your device to icloud.  If there, then be sure Calendars is turned on in Settings>iCloud or System Preferences>iCloud.

  • How do I sync Pages docs between my Macbook and a PC?

I want to sync Pages documents between my Macbook and a PC, for when I don't have the Macbook with me. I created a Pages file and saved it to iCloud, but it doesn't appear in the iCloud Pages web interface, even though other docs created in the web interface do.
Sorry to ask such a basic question, but I can't figure this out. If I'm working in Pages on my Mac and save the document, it's like it goes someplace different than when I create a Pages doc on the web interface...
Seriously confused, and not understanding how this works. Apologies for being such a beginner. This is really the only thing I want to use iCloud for.

Thanks, Rick. I have identified another part of the answer -- my husband and I both use this MacBook. We have separate IDs and iCloud accounts. But apparently only one account is allowed to store iWork files on iCloud. Apparently when his iPhone was set up, or maybe when he borrowed the MacBook for a business trip, or when he took some pictures with his new iPhone -- who knows how or when -- the storage capability got attached to his iCloud account on my computer. I started to sign him out, then was told that if that was done, the photostream would be deleted.
At this point the complexity is beyond ridiculous. We have 3 Mac devices, two computers and a phone, and I can't figure out the logic behind this limitation. I wish I had spent the hours that were invested in this effort in something more productive. I don't think iCloud is ready for primetime yet.

  • How to sync a folder on a Mac and a PC ... how and with what limitation?

Most of the time I work on a Mac (when I work from home ... love the Mac), but sometimes I need to work on a PC running Windows XP Professional (when I m in the office company policy).
My question now is how I can automatically sync my work folder between my Mac and my PC? I would prefer the sync process to run on the Mac, but I am open to suggestions.

Where is your work folder being stored? On a flash drive or on a server on your company network? Somewhere else?
Provided your company's server is set to allow "offline files" Windows XP has built-in sync services. You can usually select a folder on the server and right-click it and then look for the synchronization option. This works great for Windows. Possibly your files could be synchronized to a flash drive.
On the Mac side Synchronize Pro from Qdea has been a reliable way for our company to synchronize files between two servers during migrations. It would probably be worth looking into.
Some folks might suggest a .Mac account, which will allow you to store files on .Mac and then have your Mac automatically synchronize. I suggest against anything that stores company files on the Internet, but it's your prerogative.
    Hope this helps! bill

How do I sync my email between my iPhone and iPad?

A razmee209 said, set up your email in settings on both devices.
iPhone email will always be up to date.
The iPad will update when it has internet connection.   If it is a wifi only iPad, it will only update when connected to wifi, but will do so automatically.

  • Can I use the same apple ID to face time between my Mac and ipad2

I have tried to use FaceTime between my Mac and iPad 2 using the same apple ID and I cannot connect. Do I need two separate apple ID's to do this?

OK SO My original email on my ipad is a .mac ( which is my email from my apple ID)
After reading your advice above I added another email which is a  .me  email  I tried to facetime my husband on his airbook and it would not work. Do I have to eliminate one of the email addresses? And if I do remove it from my Facetime settings on my ipad will it be removed from my macbook pro as well?

  • Syncing Mail messages between 2 Mac book pros

What is the best way to keep 2 macbooks synced up identically, especially with mail messages.

With an IMAP account which is designed for access with an email client on multiple computers keeping all server stored mailboxes synchronized automatically with the email client used on different computers.
As an example, a .Mac account can be accessed as a .Mac type account, IMAP or POP account with Mail or as an IMAP account or POP account with a different email client on a Mac or Windows PC.
A .Mac type account with Mail is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way.
I access my .Mac account as a .Mac type account with Mail on myu Mac and as an IMAP account with Outlook Express on my Dell laptop running Windows XP at work.
When checking the account with OE on my Windows PC at work, all server stored mailboxes are automatically synchronized and identical to all server stored mailboxes with the Mail.app on my Mac and the same in reverse.
You can also store Sent messages on the server with a .Mac type or IMAP account.

  • Can icloud sync an app between 2 iphones and an ipod?

I was wondering if the icloud can sync an app between 2 iphones and an ipod under the same ID

Yes per http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4946 setup iCloud on all devices under the same account and backup to the cloud. If its two iPhones, are they both one owner? If not,it's best to not setup iCloud on a device that is not the same owner.

  • Having problems with syncing my iPod to my mac and trying to purchase a song but iTunes keeps saying "can't connect to server??

just got a new mac- been using PC. Having problems syncing my Ipod to my mac and when i try and purchase a song, itunes says "network connections timed out"-  what am I doing wrong??

Try a hard reset by pressing the Home button and Wake / Sleep button at the same time, keep them both pressed until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.
This does not lose any data on your iPad.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Starting as far back as I know about. Mac versions of Microsoft Office:
    Office 98
    Office 2001
    Office v.X
    Office 2004
    Office 2008
Office v.X was basically the same as Office 2001 but ran on OS X rather than OS 9. I am running Office v.X right now. Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage all have version numbers starting with 10.something.
Office 2004 is currently onsale and is the latest version but is only optimised for PowerPC processors. Since early to mid 2006 Apple has used Intel processors. Office 2008 will be Intel native. You can purchase Office 2004 today and obtain a free update to Office 2008 when it's released early net year.
If you are running PowerPC Macs then Office v.X may well be suitable in fact Office v.X still runs fine on my Intel iMac with Leopard.
