Syncing Aperture to Iphoto

I am running Aperture and my wife is on iPhoto, both of us on the same iMac under different logons.  I am looking for an easy way to copy all of my new photos from my Aperture library to the wife's iphoto library automatically whenever I add a new project in Aperture.  I take most of the pics but she wants to see them in her iPhoto library so when she syncs she has them on her IOS devices.
Any suggestions?

What are your Aperture version, iPhoto version, and MacOS X version? Can you use iCloud and Shared Photo Streams? Then you could send her your new projects in a Shared Photo Stream, see this for the requirements:
iPhoto and Aperture: Using Photo Stream
iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
What you need to do:
Create a Shared Photo Stream
Invite your wife to view the Stream
Share newly imported photos to the stream.
Your wife will see the stream as an album in her iPhoto LIbrary, and can import the photos she wants.

  • Syncing aperture and iPhoto, syncing aperture and iPhoto

I'd like to switch back to iphoto from aperture.  I believe Apple isn't supporting aperture very well.  Any suggestions?

Neither Aperture nor iPhoto do support synching of their image databases or even synching between databases generated by different applications.
The way from iPhoto to Aperture is a one-way road - to import iPhoto Libraries into Aperture is well supported, but back from Aperture to iPhoto you will have to export your projects and to reimport manually. This makes sense, since iPhoto only offers a subset of Aperture's features.
I believe Apple isn't supporting aperture very well.
I will not discuss belief, but Aperture and iPhoto share many frameworks and the database engine; so the only thing you'll get by going back will be a simpler graphical user interface and reduced funtionality.
    Good Luck

  • Sharing Photo's between Aperture and iPhoto and syncing to iPads, etc

    Here is my problem.
I have 5 Macs (1 iMac, 4 laptops.) There are 4 people in my family and we have the family pack of iLife. The iMac is where everything sits with a time capsule and Drobo hanging off of it - about 6 TB's of data. Each Mac sync's with a variety of iPods, iTouchs and iPads. All linked to a user. So for example, all my oldest son's devices sync with only his laptop.
Well, I finally fixed my media (songs, movies, TV shows, etc) problem by leveraging home share in iTunes and authorizing all my Macs. But not so lucky yet for Photo's.
Here is the my photo dilemma.
I like Aperture for the editing and ability to handle large libraries better. So I have Aperture installed on the iMac where everything sits. iPhoto is also installed on the iMac and iPhoto is on all 4 other laptops. Prior to moving to Aperture, sharing photo's between computers was relatively easy using sharing in iPhoto - although it appears sharing in iPhoto is different than home share in iTunes. I converted my iPhoto library on the iMac to Aperture - now sharing is a pain in the neck.
Ideally, a Home Share like feature would be built into Aperture and iPhoto with another feature that would allow you to "check for new photos" on the laptops and pull them into Aperture - but wishful thinking right now.
So my while my 2 new iPads are awesome - they are basically useless for Photo's as they are synced to 2 laptops that use iPhoto, but all my Photos are in Aperture on the iMac.
    Thoughts anyone????
    Thanks

    What was the question?

  • MobileMe gallery switched syncing from Aperture to iPhoto

I had an album on Aperture that synced with MobileMe. Friends added photos via email and via web upload, and all was good. Until one day when the Aperture web album was gone. MobileMe album was still there, but it says (under Info) that it's syncing with iPhoto (which I haven't used in 4 years). So I load up iPhoto and, voila, it starts syncing.
How can I tell MobileMe to sync with original Aperture? This is a real pain.

Actually this is an Aperture issue since this problem only occurs when I export and then import files from aperture into iphoto 08. When I import files off a disk or external compact flash disk directly into iphoto 08 and then upload to the web gallery they retain the same file size yet the files that were brought over from aperture somehow loose there size once they go to the gallery. Interstingly enough the file size of versions brought over from aperture appear to remain in tact in iphoto but drop off once on the web???? Does this have anything to do with Versions as reference files...but if so how does one retain the chaanges made in aperture to a master file and export it to iphoto 08 and then on to the web and still retain some semblance of file size??? Note I already did enable downloading prior to uploading to the gallery.. HELP!

  • Syncing photos from both aperture AND iphoto

    Hi,
I'm a user of iPhoto and Aperture. I use both but for different needs. I used to sync my photos to AppleTV from iPhoto. But now, I would also like to sync from Aperture... It seems that iTunes keeps the settings for both software but can only sync from one at a time... Is there a way to sync photos from both sources at the same time on AppleTV ?
    Thx !

    Hi,
To keep you informed of my findings...
I decided to export photos from Aperture and iPhoto that I want to be displayed in a folder under the Pictures folder. Then, I ask iTunes to sync photos from that folder instead of Aperture or iPhoto... Seems to work fine so far...

  • Can no longer sync aperture events through iTunes to ipad3

I can no longer sync aperture events through iTunes with ipad3. Mavericks/Aperture 3.5.1/ IOS 7.0.4
Have tried deleting Iphoto cache from Aperture Library.
    Worked once.
Itunes will sync a folder of images onto Ipad with sync.
But will no longer extract events from Aperture library.
Was hoping tonights Aperture fix grade in conjunction with IOS upgrade would repair issue.

  • How to transfer photo albums created on the iPad to Aperture or iPhoto?

    Hi!
I have created a photo album on iOs 5 with selected pictures of the Photostream features, now I'd like to sync back this album to Aperture 3.2.2 or iPhoto on the Mac, so I can share them with Facebook or MobileMe.
Is there a way to do that?
    Thanks

Thanks Fred, but the only photos that appear in Apertureare the ons of the iPad photo roll, not the Photo Albums created from the Photostream.
Hence, once pictures are in an album which was created directly on the iPad, I do not see any option to sync it back to Aperture or iPhoto. As the pictures are from Photostream, I do not see options in the photo album to save them back to the photo roll.
I created the album on the go, because, I was travelling without my computer and thought it would be great to make on the iPad the picture selections of the photos that I had put on my computer but did not have time to classify. I did the selection of photos, put them all in an album. There is no way to share back these 300 pics to Facebook or Mobileme or Flickr directly from the iPad, so I want to bring them back to my MAcbookPro to do it, but i can't find a way to transfer the album to the computer, and now, I have to do the selection again... Seems like Time wasted...

  • Aperture with iPhoto questions

    Hi gang,
The new integration of iPhoto and Aperture 1.5 sounds very appealing. I have a couple of questions regarding functionality. Let's assume that I have Aperture set to use my iPhoto library in referenced file mode.
    1) Will Aperture keep the two libraries in sync automatically? If I add photos to iPhoto, will they show up in Aperture?
    2) If I tag photos with keywords or ratings in Aperture, do those changes show up in iPhoto?
    3) If I make changes to a photo with Aperture, do those changes show up in iPhoto?
    Cheers!

I asked this same question and got total silence. I have/use Aperture and I don't see a way to make this work, that is the answer to all your questions is: No. While I praise the changes made in Aperture 1.5 I am surprised and disappointed that while Apple added iPhoto/Aperture integration they missed this most obvious requirement (to keep the Aperture and iPhoto databases in sync).
Copying the entire library in Aperture everytime you add a few photos to iPhoto (for example) is ridiculous.

  • Reason to use Aperture or iPhoto library?

A few months ago I purchase Aperture, on install I selected the option to let is use my iPhoto library. While "learning" to use Aperture, I didn't want to totally abandon iPhoto in case I wasn't pleased with it. Now I will be using Aperture solely, still doesn't do all I want, but better/close than iPhoto.
So, my question is, is there a reason to transfer all of the iPhoto images to a new Aperture library, or is there no real difference between the two types of libraries? I have already created an Aperture library for some commerical work that I am doing, whereas the iPhoto is primarily a personal/family album.
P.S., is the Aperture library accessible / sharable with my iPad? I take the iPad with me to show customers the photos I

Yes, I haven't tried syncing the two. I have imported into aperture, but haven't tried going the other way, or a two-way sync.
Syncing? Neither Aperture nor iPhoto supports syncing of photo libraries so far. Aperture can merge iPhoto libraries and Aperture libraries, but it cannot keep two libraries in sync with each other.
There would be one minor advantage, if you import your iPhoto library into a new Aperture library. Aperture is a bit more economical with additional files, like faces and previews. iPhoto will always scan imported image files for faces, and iPhoto will always create high quality previews. In Aperture you can disable faces and previews, or set the size of previews to a smaller file size. So, an Aperture library might be smaller than a corresponding iPhoto library, when you create it new.
And I am not yet quite sure, what will happen, if new Aperture versions and iPhoto versions will be released, that require a paid upgrade. To use an iPhoto library with Aperture, right now it has to be upgraded in iPhoto to an iPhoto version compatible with Aperture. You cannot open iPhoto '9 libraries directly in Aperture, you need iPhoto '11. If it stays this way, you might be required to buy a paid upgrade to iPhoto to upgrade your combined iPhoto-Aperture library to be used with a new Aperture 4, even if you are no longer using iPhoto. In this case, it would be safer to convert the iPhoto library to an Aperture library by importing the iPhoto library into a new, empty Aperture library.

  • Few questions related to moving from aperture to iphoto

i have decided that i want to move from aperture to iphoto,
    a. provided iphoto can meet some basic needs that i have in mind. assuming it can,
    b. the next question will be on how to make the move easiest and effective.
    why, you might ask:
aperture is great but is more difficult to edit in. further aperture does not have some fun and easy edits - apply styles for instance. not to mention faces and places (although one can expect these features to find their way in aperture over time).
anyhow i am realizing that if my photo software was as simple as iphoto, i would share more and enjoy more . therefore moving. but moving is tough - need to think through. help appreciated!
    Couple of questions:
    0. i have looked and looked. did not find any solution that is thorough. these two links are the most relevant. http://bit.ly/1WSexN (this one is more of a sync solution, i need to research if it accomplishes what i need done - which is to abandon Aperture. at some point be able to delete Aperture library and the photos that Aperture refers to because the set will quickly get outdated) and http://bit.ly/zc7mC (this one does not answer the questions i have below, although it does seem to suggest that one can do export of projects such that nested folders are created)
    1. i would like to move my projects (comprising of images in aperture) into folders on the hard disk, such that the IPTC tags are stored in the images on the HDD. I assume that masters will already have the tags and versions - no idea? anybody know about this. i will try test it too.
    2. i have rated images extensively in aperture. anybody know how to transfer those ratings to iphoto? one kludgy way i can think of is to save an IPTC tag for every rating level and that hopefully will get transferred over to iPhoto.
    3. importing folders into iPhoto - i am assuming that folders can be imported (by reference, without copying the image file into iphoto library) into iPhoto as events. how will i get the albums from aperture - not sure. kludgy way will be to enter album name as IPTC tag and then create smart albums. too kludgy and painfully slow in my opinion... anybody have ideas?
3.a. if i import nested folders of images into iPhoto, how would iPhoto treat that? again i can test, but if somebody knows, will not mind the commentary.
    4. simple question - when i edit tags in iphoto, does it edit IPTC tags or does it have non-IPTC tagging approach?
    5. simple question - when i make an edit in iphoto, where does it same the edited file? or is it a virtual version of the master image as in Aperture.
    and that is all

    0. What do you want to move? Use the Show Aperture Library in iPhoto will access your Aperture Previews not your actual files.
You need to export from Aperture to folders on the desktop and thereafter import to iPhoto. You need to decide if you want to export Originals - which means you'll have to start editing from scratch all over again - Versions, (which will be the edited photos, but you won't have your Originals) - or both. But if you import both to iPhoto you will have a large amount of duplication.
. i would like to move my projects (comprising of images in aperture) into folders on the hard disk, such that the IPTC tags are stored in the images on the HDD. I assume that masters will already have the tags and versions - no idea? anybody know about this. i will try test it too.
When you export from Aperture you will need to explicitly choose to write the tags to the output file. This is a setting in the Aperture export dialogue.
    3. importing folders into iPhoto - i am assuming that folders can be imported (by reference, without copying the image file into iphoto library)
I strongly urge you not to run iPhoto in Referenced Mode. IPhoto works best in the default mode. Should the path to the files change at any point in the future - especially if you move the files to a new disk - then you may find yourself resolving the location of each individual photo in your Library.
Is there a particular reason you want to run a Referenced Library?
how will i get the albums from aperture - not sure. kludgy way will be to enter album name as IPTC tag and then create smart albums. too kludgy and painfully slow in my opinion... anybody have ideas?
    That's the best way.
3.a. if i import nested folders of images into iPhoto, how would iPhoto treat that? again i can test, but if somebody knows, will not mind the commentary
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'. Now each folder will be created as an Event. There are no nested events.
If you don't uncheck the box, then each folder will be broken by date and time into Events.
    4. simple question - when i edit tags in iphoto, does it edit IPTC tags or does it have non-IPTC tagging approach?
IPhoto works exactly the same way as Aperture. It does not edit the tags on the pic, but stores them in the database. The tags are written to the IPTC on export.
    5. simple question - when i make an edit in iphoto, where does it same the edited file? or is it a virtual version of the master image as in Aperture
When you edit a pic with or via iPhoto it creates a new version of the photo. This is stored inside the Library package.
A Note about the iPhoto Library Package:
In this folder there are various files, which are the Library itself and some ancillary files. Then you have three core folders
Originals are the photos as they were downloaded from your camera or scanner.
(ii) Modified contains edited pics, shots that you have cropped, rotated or changed in any way.
(iii) Data holds the thumbnails the the app needs to show you the photos in the iPhoto Window.
Remember: iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.

  • Sync aperture 3 between 2 computers

How can I sync Aperture libraries on 2 computers (my laptop and my desktop)? Apple says:
    "Merge and Sync Libraries
To merge two or more Aperture libraries, simply drag one Aperture library into another. If any of the merged projects match those already in the library, Aperture automatically updates those items with the most recent changes."
Question--Will this drag-and-drop method work between 2 computers?
    Thanks for any help.

    Hey everyone,
I've been using iPhoto on my laptop (which was my main computer) since like 2004 when I first started on Mac. The iPhoto library reads as 150gb... so quite a lot.
I also have a desktop that I use for work (mainly Video editing station) but over the last year, my projects have gotten me into using Aperture on the Mac Pro and now any time I happen to go back to iPhoto... it feels "small". So i'm gonna be moving that over to Aperture as well.
Now... a fair amount of my personal stuff over the last year has been making it onto the desktop with aperture due to its better editing capabilities... but I'd like this stuff to be on the laptop as well. Last few months I've been using PhotoStream to push back the best selections that I can view now on iPhoto... but that has limitations (ie, video, large files)... so after doing some reading (and this thread)... i think I know the workflow that I want to setup, but I'm not entirely sure of the best way to go about it.
    What I want is this:
Desktop (Mac Pro)... to have EVERYTHING... all the masters, RAW files, projects, libraries etc (due to expanded hard drive bays, plus easy to keep external drives just connected and mount/unmount as I need).
Laptop (Macbook Pro).... to basically be a mirror of my aperture library... but at a much smaller scale. I don't need the RAW files, or the huge masters etc. I just want the images that 99% of the time will be for viewing or emailing, but I'd like to do this abroad when i'm not at the desktop.
I've figured out how to import my iPhoto library into Aperture on the laptop... then I need to move that onto the desktop so I have the last 8 or so years of photos on there... and then I can just merge it into my current on-going aperture library.
    So I have 3 questions:
    a) use different libraries? will it make things better? on the desktop... i just have one library, that has my personal photos and work-related photos... i split them simply by Project and that works fine enough for me. Will I gain anything if I split into a work-only library and a personal-only library? I dont really want to have to continually switch between the 2 depending on what I'm doing
    b) How do I have everything stored (referenced? im still a bit unclear as to how the referencing works in aperture...i just know that sometimes i have the "show in finder" option on a photo... and sometimes I don't).... on the desktop (whether it be an external drive or internal for the RAW/masters).... and then how do I only bring over what I need (including the aperture edits) over to the laptop? If I make changes on the laptop and desktop... how do i sync them to "merge" the changes/which edits does it take preference? from all the reading ive done (including the 2 links above), i'm still really unclear on this.
    c) I use some plugins which ive noticed just create new files in aperture... how/where exactly does aperture store those (ie, i often use a de-noise plugin), that will then bring it over to the laptop as well.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Impossible to sync photos with iPhoto

It is no longer possible to sync photos using iPhoto. With Aperture everything works well.
iPhone 3GS with iOS4 not JB, iTunes 9.2, MAC OSX 10.6.4

I found the problem. This is a new bug introduced in 8.1 of iPhoto.
    According to iPhotoManager:
Another recently introduced problem, which appears to only happen with iPhoto 8.1, has to do with music that you've assigned to a custom slideshow. If you have created a slideshow in iPhoto, and using the "Settings" button, have assigned a song from your iTunes library to be played with that slideshow, then if that song has an ampersand (&) character anywhere in the path to the music file (this can include the name of the artist, the album, or the song itself), iPhoto does not write it out correctly to the XML file and you get an error. If you do have a music file assigned to a slideshow, you will either need to assign a different song, or remove any ampersands in the path to the song and re-select the same song in iPhoto to update it to the new location. (make sure to click "Apply" in the settings window to make your change "stick").
This was my problem. I had a song from Simon & Garfunkel in a slideshow and the Path to the song had the & that was malformed.
I removed the slideshow and I am now working.
Apple please fix this bug. I wasted over 5 hours until I went and purchased iPhoto Library Manager and it immediately pointed out the problem.

    Hello everyone,
I have the application Aperture where I edit pictures and can not seem to open it today when I try the message "To open this iPhoto library in Aperture, it first needs to be upgraded.Verify that you have iPhoto 9.4 or later. Then open the library in iPhoto to upgrade it." I upgraded Iphoto and then tryed to open Aperture while Iphoto was closed and I got the same message. Then I tried to open the Iphoto library and now the message "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable.Shut down and restart your computer, and then open iPhoto again. If the problem persists, try rebuilding your photo library. To do this, quit iPhoto, and then reopen it while keeping the Option and Command keys pressed. You can also try restoring your photo library from a backup. Aperture was not open at the time so I shut down then restarted my computer. The same Message Appered. Then I tried to rebuild the library by holding down the option and command key I tried all of the rebuilding options and when I went to rebuild it the same message opened in iphoto. Help me! I am a photographer with a website and need to get this up and running fast. I wanted to cunsult with Apple Support Communities before I make the trip out to the apple store.

Also when I went to finder to see it the library existed its now labled Iphoto library copy. I have a time capsule and restored it back by a day and it didn't work I still got the same message in aperture and Iphoto.
