Syncing Apple TV without Internet or Wireless Modem

Hi
I am new to ATV and not very tech savy.
I have an iMac, iPhone and recently got ATV. My wireless broadband won't arrive before two weeks and I am impatient to hook up my ATV to the LCD.
I heard that there is a way to create a wireless network using the iMac and get the iPhone to hook up to it and use it as a remote control to drive the ATV. Then I can connect the ATV to iMac using the internet-free wireless network and then I can start playing whatever is on my Imac.
Can anyone please tell me where and how I can create this internet-free wireless network on the iMac?
Thanks in advance

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
If you have a wifi symbol in your menu bar, choose 'create wireless network', if you have no such icon in the menu bar go to system preferences/network where you can create a wireless network from the network name options.
If you have no internet there isn't much point in turning internet sharing on. You will of course be unable to use any features that require an internet connection.

  • Is there a way to display movies purchased from itunes from my ipad to my apple TV without internet (still using wifi)

I am going on vacation and will have a wifi network, but no internet access. I have tried to display downloaded movies from my ipad purchased on itunes to my apple TV, but get "Unknown Error -3". I can use mirroring, but not show the video. I am signed into the same account on both devices and the movie is downloaded to the ipad. The only issue I can think of is some DRM check, but I am not sure.
Has anyone been able to do this? It would be nice to be able to use my purchased movies on vacation without needing internet.
    thanks for any help

Will the lightning to HDMI dongle work?

This was a big advantage of AppleTV1 - generally it did not need internet authorisation for synced material on its internal drive and was great for holiday/vacation.
I tend to use a Mac Mini these days when going away.

  • Can I play photos from my iPad to my Apple TV without internet, just a network?

    Hi
I'd like to know if it will be possible to play the photos on my iPad 2 to my Apple TV 2 via a wireless home network that has not internet connection.

    Hey A Silverstone,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you want to use mirroring on your home network. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
    iOS: Use AirPlay Mirroring
To enable AirPlay Mirroring on your iOS 7 device, follow these steps:
Connect your iOS device and your Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a great day,

  • NTP Sync with switch (without internet)

    Hi,
We have 20 switchs around our network, all switchs without internet and if we set the clock it will be till restart.
      Please advice.

We have 20 switchs around our network, all switchs without internet
Cisco appliances do not come with built-in "clocks".  The clocks that came with routers and switches can and will drift.  So you'll need something for the appliances to synchronize NTP/SNTP with.  IF your appliances don't have access to the internet, then you'll need something like a GPS-based NTP server.

  • Running Apple TV without Internet

Hey guys. My business has 4 apple TV's that will be hooked up in 4 different offices. All of which will not have internet connection. I'm trying to make them display training videos for employees. Is it not possible to load video onto the apple tvs and then hook the apple tvs to TV monitors to show the videos without connecting to a network? thanks in advance for any help.

You'll need to introduce the tv on a LAN (network) which includes the mac/pc that you wish to sync data from, this LAN does not need to have internet access.
Once you have done this and synced all the content to the tv that you wish to, you can then remove the tv from the LAN and simply connect it to any compatible tv in order to playback the contents on it.
There are a few provisos here about DRM inclusive and rented content, but it appears you intend to show your own videos on the tv which shouldn't be a problem at all.
Can you be more specific in your reply in terms of your use of the phrase 'internet' and 'network', it makes quite a difference when we try to provide an answer. Internet (WAN) implies you have a connection to, well, the internet; network implies that you can connect to local devices (macs/pc's etc)

  • Using Apple TV Without Internet?

I have successfully set up my Apple TV2 by logging into my iTunes account. Now I would like to take it with me on vacation, and use with AirPlay to run videos off my iPad on the HD TV where we're staying.
Is it possible to run AirPlay without having an internet connection - once the Apple TV has been successfully registered? Or is the Apple TV going to fail to operate if it cannot log into iTunes or the internet?

If you have an Airport Express router or really any small portable router you can use that to create your wifi network between the Apple TV and the iPad. No internet needed.

  • Syncing Apple TV without duplicating video intended for iPod

I am converting video for both Apple TV and iPod with iTunes. How do you prevent Apple TV from syncing the converted files intended for iPod to avoid two copies of the same video displayed on the TV set?

I have 601 video items at the moment in my master iTunes library. Many of them, but not all, are duplicated -- once for iPod and once for tv. Every movie now has a comment field containing "iPod Codec" or "AppleTV" or both as in "iPod Codec / AppleTV".
Then I built two sets of smart playlists, using this field as a filter along with my other smart playlist rules.
Each device is configured to only pick up the proper playlists, and voila!
Just be sure you're showing the "Comments" field in your iTunes view options, so you'll know if you missed adding text to one of your movies.

  • Can I Connect Apple TV Without Internet?

I just ordered my Apple TV Sunday. Today is Tuesday and they emailed me that it will come Thursday. I live way back in the woods so I only have dial up. So I am wondering if I can connect my Apple TV to my HP Notebook with an ethernet cable. that would create a connection between them. Then will iTunes reconize it and sync all the stuff to the Apple TV? Will this work??? Please help me.. Will this work???? Thanks in advance!

Oh god thanks!!! My hert dropped because i was searching google and they said no... Then I realized that it was the older Apple TV's... lol... Thankyou SOOOOO much!
there is no "older" appletv. they are all identical.
appletv "take 2" is just a software update.

Thanks for the info. You are correct. I was speaking in general terms here based on my experience with the two devices in day to day use, and not in terms of exact specifications.
A better choice would have been to say that the "coverage" is about the same with the edge going to the Extreme....due to the newer mutliple antenna design.
We sure could use more help on the forums. Hope that you will become a regular.
    Hi Bob
RF is a minefield, but one that I have worked in for ages, the most critical factor in my experience is location, location, location!
Better routers have more intelligently designed antenna systems, output power as I said is the same, radiation pattern (coverage) is dependent on antennas and physical location more than all other factors.

The wireless cellular device would need to have an Ethernet port, to provide an Ethernet signal to the Time Capsule's WAN port.

  • I would like to use my iPhone 6's wifi hotspot to provide Internet at home (I do not have home internet) via a Time Capsule which I currently use the TC simply as a home wifi network without Internet to enable things like printing wirelessly and back

I would like to use my iPhone 6's wifi hotspot to provide Internet at home (I do not have home internet) via a Time Capsule which I currently use the TC simply as a home wifi network without Internet to enable things like printing wirelessly and backing up data wirelessly via time machine.
I have a Mac Pro, iPhone 6, iPad, Apple TV and Time Capsule. No home Internet.
Is is possible to have my iPhone 6's wifi hotspot used to provide Internet to my wifi network on time capsule? Has anyone else had success doing this? I'm not a tech head and really know very little about things like this. Thanks. Jen

You can have a go using a wireless bridge.. eg the airport express will do this.. you can join it to the iphone wireless running as a hotspot.. and then plugged into the TC wan port.. the TC has to be setup in router mode.. so this is going to give you double NAT errors.. and of course errors for all the time the hotspot is turned off.. but it can work. However you might find it requires you to manually connect up each time.. If you are really going to try and do this you will manage it.. but how fiddly it becomes might put you off after a week.
You will chew up your 5GB very fast using any streaming media even radio. So be very careful to track the usage.
Apple should have built in the TC the ability to plug in a wireless 3G modem.. via the USB but Apple have ceased to do adventurous stuff.
If you give up the TC as main router there are plenty of better products on the market that will handle multiple wan connections.. !!

  • I have a Power PC G4 which is running on OSX 10.5.8, it has the AirPort utility but cannot connect to the internet as my iMac can, I think I might need an AirPort Card? Is that the case or do I need something different to connect to a wireless modem?

    Welcome!
Only one variant of the PowerMac G4 could use the faster Airport Extreme Card. The rest used the original Airport card that is pretty slow.
To get fast wireless without buying more than one thing, consider this:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Edimax/EW7722IN/
It goes in an available PCI slot
There are USB solutions also. However, all PowerMac G4 towers had only slower USB 1.1 ports, so any USB wireless adaptor can only run at about wireless 'B" speeds (slow) unless you also install a PCI USB 2.0 adaptor card. Doing that would allow a USB wireless adaptor to run at its maximum rated speed. These items working together would accomplish that:
    USB wireless "dongle:"
Newer Technology MAXPower 802.11n/g/b USB Adapter + Plug and play direct or with extension cradle
    USB PCI adaptor:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/Search/Search.cfm?Ntk=Primary&Ns=P_Popularity%7c1&Ne=5 000&N=7069&Ntt=USB+PCI
Each approach has its advantages. The PCI wireless card is a one-piece solution that takes up no desk space. The USB2 card+USB2 Dongle gives you more fast ports for transferring date from other external USB devices (primarily cameras and external hard drives) at hugely faster rates than can the original ports. I have a USB 2 PCI card in my G4 tower strictly for transferring images from my digital SLR camera in a timely manner.

  • I have changed my internet connection to Huawei e586 modem 3g 4g wireless modem my Air Play not working any more

I have apple TV 3rd generation it use to work fine through the previous modem(THOMSON TG585 v7)
I have changed my internet connection now using Huawei e586 modem 3g 4g wireless modem
At the moment There is internet connection in the apple TV  I can manage only through the apple remote. But I can’t  AIR PLAY or mirroring from iphone
I can see the AIR Play but I can’t play any music or video in the apple TV. Also I am sure I have activated the home sharing in  I tunes/Remote app/apple TV
Personally I think because the connection setting, but I do not know how to fix it can someone advise please?

    MOG,
I have a similar problem with this HG8245, but I can't even see the airplay icon in my iOS devices nor my MB Pro. However, I discover by accident that it works very well if I connect the ATV through the wifi interface (tested with my iPhone 4 and iPad 3Gen both w/iOS 6.0.1, and my MB Pro w/OS X 10.8.2). But as soon as I connect the ATV through the ethernet port, it disappears from all my devices.
So my guess is that there is some issue (i.e. undocumented filtering)  between the wifi and the ethernet interfaces. I have reviewed the HG8245 configuration  but I haven't found how to solve this. Have you figured out how to solve it? I will try to use some port scanner to see if there is some difference im using the wifi and the ethernet ports and will post the findings.

  • Time capsule 2 wireless networks one without internet

    Hi
i have a airport extreme and time capsule setup via ethernet to extend the network in the lounge room - i have setup a wireless network which has full internet access
my question is >> , does anyone know how to setup a second wireless network (without internet access - so it can be used for watching movies from a my cloud hdd via the my cloud app - ) so basically a second wifi network with only wifi -no internet ?
    Is this possible ?
    thanks

Yes, it is possible.. but you will need another wireless router to do it.
Setup the wireless router as a Static IP device running DHCP and running a different wireless name to the apple routers. You will need to swap your device that is watching the video from the airport network to the new network to watch the movie.
This could be done better with a more sophisticated router.. Apple provide no functionality beyond the most basic but lots of routers that allow you to run secondary IP and vlan will allow this without needing multiple networks.. For now though it is easier to just get a cheap wireless router.
Even an Apple router can do what you want.. just set it up as router without a WAN connection.. something like a Gen5 AE would work well and fairly cheap.
