Syncing Calendars and Contacts without the complete home folder on the server

I've been trying to set up syncing of calendars and contacts using Mavericks server. I've read a lot of posts on various ways of doing this but am at a loss as to the how the various parts of the solutions work which may be why I haven't been able to get things to work.
I've installed Server.app and got Open Directory set up. I want to sync the calendars for two users on a couple of client machines (both running Snow Leopard at the moment) and three mobile devices. The clients were set up before the server and so the user accounts are local. Putting the home folders and all the files they contain on the server is not an option as there's not enough disk space. Ideally I'd like to have all the user files on the local machines and only the data I need to sync on the server. Is this possible? All of the information I've read on migrating local users to network users suggests that their complete home folder needs to be put on the server and I've not found any way to set up the syncing successfully without making them network users.

Thanks for the answer Simon. That seems simple enough but there are some things which aren't clear.
If I create accounts on the server for the users independently (ie not ownership of the home folder) they're going to have different UID's. Surely this means that even with the same account name and password, they're going to be treated as unique users. Does that not affect who has write access? I don't know how the Calendar and Contact servers work so this may be irrelevant.
How do you "have the server host their calendar and contact details"? Copying the files for the existing local users to the new users on the server will leave them with invalid permissions.
I have read that using the Calendar and Contact components of Server.app is not a supported way of syncing across machines and that they're intended to be used for shared information rather than syncing. But maybe there is no way to avoid an "unsupported method" without moving the home folder. Is this a method you're using?
I'll do a bit of testing with this but would also be grateful for any additional hints.

  • TS4147 Is there any way with the latest version of iTunes to restore the ability to sync calendar and contacts WITHOUT using that cloud?

Until I got to the latest version of iTunes, I always synced contacts and calendar directly.  Now that option is gone.  I have shut off iCloud but still don't have anyway to sync these, apparently, without going to the cloud.  I don't want to share my information with Apple.  Further, in the past any time I have attempted something like this it was a complete mess with entries duplicated.

You can if you install OS X server (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/os-x-server/id714547929), as discussed here: http://www.macworld.com/article/2061183/itunes-ios-syncing-gone-solve-it-with-se rver-.html.

  • Can you sync calendar and contacts over the air to...

I'm considering getting an E71 or E63, but apart from email I really want to be able to sync calendar (and contacts)over the air, not just from to/from Outlook on my PC - is this possible ? It's not really explained clearly in any of the specs and doco I've been reading.
Also, if I receive a calendar invitation as email, will it appear on the Nokia and can I accept it, and is it written to the calendar locally and at the POP server, or is this kind of behaviour only supported by Windows Mobile devices?

POP (post-office protocol) is only for email retrieval (and SMTP, simple message transfer protocol, for sending).
If you want to sync calendar/contacts, then it is done over SyncML (synchronization markup language).
Also "proprietary" synchronization protocols, like Microsoft's ActiveSync allows message/contacts/calendar/tasks synchronization.
Nokia supports ActiveSync over-the-air through the Mail for Exchange software.

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • How to sync calendars and contacts between ios 3.1.3 and Mountain Lion?

I have a 1st generation iPod touch under iOS 3.1.3 and a MacBook Pro under Mountain Lion 10.8.3 with iTunes 11.0.1.
Since the upgrade to Mountain Lion syncing calendars and contacts between the iPod Touch and the Mac no longer works.
I don't want my personal information in Apple's or anybody else's Cloud and anyway iOS 3.1.3 can't use Apple's Cloud.
So I can no longer sync without a) replacing my iPod Touch which itself works perfectly well and does not need replacing and b) using Apple's Cloud which I do not wish to use for personal data.
This is a MAJOR AND DAMAGING step backwards by Apple, which they should correct IMMEDIATELY if they wish to keep their increasingly fed-up older customers.
    Time-wasting work-around:
As I never trust operating system upgrades to not destroy something that "just works", I have Snow Leopard still on another bootable partition on my machine, and Lion on a bootable partition on an external Thunderbolt disc.
In order to sync, I backup Calendars and Contacts under Mountain Lion under which I do all my normal work, switch to either Snow Leopard or Lion, update iCal and Address Book from the backup files saved under Mountain Lion, sync the iPod Touch, and switch back to Mountain Lion.
Lots of time wasted with 2 successive re-boots, but at least HERE IS A SOLUTION THAT WORKS - I have seen lots of posts protesting bitterly about this totally unacceptable backwards step - what on earth do Apple hope to gain from this? More sales of newer equipment to replace perfectly functioning older ones? Certainly not from many of us.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Why can I no longer sync iCal and contacts without iCloud?

I dont use iCloud basically because by doing so all your data - specifically your contacts and calendar - gets uploaded to an Apple server where it sits for ever. If you decide you want to stop using iCloud (like you decide for some weird reason to use windows instead...or you move somewhere where there's no internet - its possible) it deletes your data from the device you have unsubscribed from. This basically means once you are on iCloud there is no going back. Apple basically acts as if it owns you and your data and inorder to access it (excude me but my calender and contacts list belongs to me) its obligitory to use Apple and iCloud...if you dont it gets deleted and is gone for ever.
So I sync via USB/WiFi...but now after 'upgrading' to Mavericks this option is no longer permitted? You MUST use iCloud.....WHY?? - I dont want to!
I run a business and use iCal to make all my business bookings - these used to sync easily between my iPad and my iMac. Now it doesnt unless I hand over the rights to all my data for all enternity to Apple inc.
This is my stuff and it doesnt belong to Apple - I want to keep it that way
How can I sync iCal and Contacts without signing away ownership of my diary and contacts to Apple?
Am I going to have to ditch my Mac?? Why wasnt this more widely publicized??
    Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks

Thanks for the reply Arthur. Actually, I just got off the phone with an apple rep telling me you can't downgrade, and that yes, apple actually IS forcing you to use iCloud - if, that is, you actually want to be able to sync your contacts or calendar. Apparently you are special and know something different, so please enlighten the rest of us.
    Here is one way
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-6311
    Here is another
    http://www.apple.com/au/osx/server/
    Here is yet another
If your Mavericks came with anything other than Mavericks pre-installed
OS X Mavericks: Revert to a previous OS X version
Also there are a host of other Cloud services you can use. You do not have to use iCloud at all. Although there ARE over 320+ million iCloud presently active, so it is extremely popular with users.

  • HT1535 sync calendars and contacts to laptop- Windows 8.1

I just bought a new laptop running Windows 8.1 and tried to sync calendars and contacts to my iPhone and iPad to the laptop. Contacts were OK, but my iPhone has developed a second calendar called  'Outlook Calendar' and none of the entries in 'Calendar' [which is the one I use] will sync.

  • Syncing calendar and contacts from windows phone 8...

How do I set up my windows phone to sync calendar and contacts with BT mail
    Thanks

Outlook 2003 and 2007 is supported. Outlook 2002 is not supported.
You must select Outlook for syncing contact information and calendar events under the Info tab for your iPhone sync preferences.
And copied from my previous post.
+If Outlook does not include any contact information or calendar events, before syncing enter one contact and one calendar event. Make these up if needed which can be deleted later.+
+This should provide a merge prompt when syncing, which you want to select.+

  • How to sync calendar and contact with Galaxy S2 and iCal and Address Book, how to sync calendar and contact with Galaxy S2 and iCal and Address Book

I have a Galaxy S2, gmail account, hotmail account and want to know the best way to be able to sync calendar and contacts from the Galaxy S2 with iCal and Address Book. I want to be able to make changes on any device and be able to sync the changes.  Hotmail is my main email account and would prefer to use tha account but I know that the Galaxy prefers Google.  Any ideas?

You have several ways to sync your phone to a mac.
You can use Samsung Kies for mac. You can download it here.
You can also use Google for it. Open Adress Book, click Adress Book on the left top of the screen, click Prefferences and open the Accounts tab. You'll see a "Synchronize with Google" checkbox, click it, enter you mail and password and you are good to go.
On iCal go to Preferences (top left, click iCal to see it), open the Accounts Tab, you'll see a blank list on the left, at the bottom of it there is a "+" sign, click on it and select Google on the Account Type dropdown list, enter your account details and you are done.
Third way to do it is by using third party software such as SyncMate.
Hope any of these alternatives solve your problem!
(The iCal and Address Book instructions are for Snow Leopard, but it should be almost the same on Lion)

  • HT1386 I sync all songs, photos and videos between my computer and iPod classic with no problems, but when I get to sync info I get this message: "iTunes cannot sync Calendar and contacts to iPod. Try logging out of Windows adn then logging back in".

I sync all songs, photos and videos between my computer and iPod classic with no problems, but when I get to sync info I get this message: "iTunes cannot sync Calendar and contacts to iPod. Try logging out of Windows adn then logging back in".  Could you please help?

Correct. When you update via iTunes all synced media that is not in your iTunes library will be lost.
    As IO said before:
You can redownload most iTunes pruchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
I do not think it included audio books.

  • IPhone 3G doesn't sync calendars and contacts via mobileme

    Hi.
Since the initial setup, my new iPhone 3G doesn't sync up with MobileMe.
After some trouble in the beginning MM works fine now between my Powerbook and my iMac but although my MM-settings on the iPhone are correct and set to sync calendars and contacts, it simply doesn't.
I have tried everything on the iPhone:
    Push (nothing happens).
Disconnecting push, using manual or automatic (15 min, 30 min, 1 hour).
Deleting my MobileMe account on the phone, thus erasing all contacts and calendars, then retyping everything correctly (and getting no message to suggest otherwise).
ITunes too tells me, that calendars and contacts are sync'ed through MM and I can't sync iCal and Contacts using the cable either.
Also, when I open System/MobileMe/Synchronize/Advanced on either of my computers to see the list of devices connected to my MobileMe, it only shows my computers on that list - not the iPhone!
Can anyone help me with this or do I just have to wait for Apple to realize that MM doesn't work on iPhone 3 (2.2) - which kind of defeats the whole purpose of getting it in the first place?
    Thanks,

This is a list of registered computers with your MM account, not a list of registered devices. Your iPhone will not be shown in the list of registered computers, because it isn't a computer.
I thought so, but wanted to mention it in case I was wrong.
Have you tried turning Contacts and Calendars off for over the air syncing with your MM account preferences on your iPhone followed by turning both back on?
I have tried everything I can think of, and that includes the above.
When doing this, however, the phone prompts me to accept that all calendar events and contacts on the phone are erased in order to sync new information from MobileMe.
I accept, but trouble is that no new info comes the other way, although the "spinning wheel" is running for ages.
I can again say, that the iPhone has been set up to MobileMe using the correct password and addres.
Neither Push, nor set intervals or manual sync have worked at any time.
The only way, I can put my calendar and contacts onto it is by deleting the MobileMe account on the phone and syncing via USB

  • Desktop v 6.2 Lost Calendar and Contact functions, Handheld Tungsten E2 still has the data and functions

May 12, 2011 I decided to upgrade Desktop 6.1 to 6.2 on my home Win 7 Desktop,  the download and installation appeared to work correctly. Since I use the handheld daily (for everything) and backup at work and home every 2-3 days. I did not notice that the Calendar and Contact functions on my home desktop had disappeared for a few days. Normally at home I use the Desktop to make adjustments and additions to my data in other applications. I did not realize that Calendar and Contacts had dropped off the home PC, until I needed to update my calendar from notes at home..
I have tried to download the software and repair the installation. Still failed.
So after downloading ver 4.1.4, I uninstalled the 6.2 version.  I was unable to find the installation program for the prior 6.1. Version 4.1.4, lacks what I had for my home desktop.
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

I use the Tungsten E2 & had upgraded to 6.2 (Access) OS.  I had all filed backed up to another folder on the PD.  I lost the DATE, ADDRESS, MEMOS & TO DO categories on the Palm Desktop.  I tried to re-install 6.2 (the categories were still lost); I uninstalled 6.2 & installed 4.1 (but could not import files from my backed-up files).
The solution was to uninstall 4.1 (I used Windows uninstall) & to re-install 6.2.  The missing categories were still missing.  Right click on the Palm Desktop shortcut, click on Properties, click on Compatibility, put a check mark  in the Administrator Box, click on Apply & click on OK.  The missing categories returned including the data that was in them.
