Syncing clips from two cameras

This must be a fairly common thing, but I have been unable to find the answer I'm looking for, so maybe I have a terminology problem. But here is what I want to do...
I shot my wedding using two cameras one a Sony HVR-A1U on a tripod and the other a Sony PD-170 handheld by a friend of mine. I would like to put them both in the timeline and just cut back and forth between the two cameras. Is there an easy way to match the two, so I get clean edits? Also I'm going to use the audio from just the camera on the tripod as it's better.
I hope I explained that clearly.
Thanks in advance for your help.

You should've synched them to a clock or some such thing when you recorded the event, but it's too late for that. The best way to do what you want is multiclip editing-- which, (sorry for more bad news) is not a function of Express. You'll have to layer them on top of each other and sync them some other way, then just cut back and forth as you see fit.
As a sidenote, while FCP does have multiclip editing, I would not consider upgrading to it just for that. It is widely known as one of the weaker functions of FCP (at least as compared to other NLEs).

Probably best if you could post screen shots of the Inspecror window in extended view with a couple of the clips you using for the 2 angles.
If you have audio from both cameras and have identified them separately, the sync is usually pretty reliable.

  • Synchronization of multiple clips from two cameras using TIMECODE

    Hi there and greetings everyone,
I'm new to the adobe forum, but I'm quite familiar with premiere pro and generally with filming and editing.
My question is simple, yet complicated:
I have 2x 5D mark III synched via timecode to the second and I have an event of about 30 minutes, where each camera recorded individual clips in an alternating way (so there are gaps between clips from the same camera, but almost 100% coverage with the 2 cameras together - we used this method for a more creative / interesting end result)
HOW DO I import the clips from the 2 cameras in such a way that there will be two different video tracks (so for exemple track 1 for cam 1 and track 2 for cam 2) yet I will be able to sync them via timecode in my timeline ?
    Aditional info:
    - the only thing I managed was to select all the clips, create a multi-camera sequence and open that in a timeline format (everything is synced up, but each individual clip is on a different track, so I have 61 video layers basically instead of 2)
I've asked lots of people, red tens of topics, watched lots of tutorial videos, none seemed to answare my question
    - I know there is the Multi Camera Monitor, but that option is designe for editing and synching clips when there is 1 long clip / camera, and where you actually watch the entire recording and do the editing real time, which is not my case.
    - Some sugested me to use plural eyes, but I don't see any point in using andio based synchronization if I have excelent timecode.
    - I also need it done the way I described because for me it;s more manageble that way, I can edit it faster, and I already know what to look for, so it;s again nonesence to use the multicam feature.
The bottom line is that I am looking for something similar to pluraleyes (when you import everything in one timeline) and use the audio info to sync it, but in this case I would use the embeded timecode.
I've red a post where someone mentioned that in other editors its just select all / sync / done, so I can't believe it;s that complicated in Premiere.

There are currently better sync features in the works!
I know your frustration. For a similar and more in-depth discussion, see another thread I posted in here: Batch syncing audio and video using timecode
Unfortunately in CS6 (what I currently use)  it creates a separate track for each clip, which can be a mess if you have hundreds of clips. The best way I have found to make things easier is to create a separate TC synced multi-cam sequence for each individual cameras footage.  For example, I follow the same steps you did for each of my cameras footage independently so that I have a TC synced sequence for camera A, a TC sequence for camera B, etc. Then you can select all the footage of each sequence, nest it, and copy each nest into a master sequence to work with. What you end up with is a single clip for each camera. MUCH easier to work with!  To keep track of where clips start and/or end in the nested sequences you can go into your original sequence and place a marker (shortcut "M") at each clip. These markers then show up in your Mastertimeline clips for reference.
I know things could be easier, but this is currently the best option I know of. I already put in a feature request and was told by the Engineering Manager of Premiere Pro that new sync features were in the works. (see thread link above)
    Hope that helps!
...and for the record, here is my TC sync process:
SELECT ALL clips you wish to sync from your Project Tab/Window.
RIGHT-CLICK and SELECT "Create Multi-camera Source Sequence..." In CS6 it is the next-to-last option in your popup window.
A dialogue box will appear. For the Synchronize Point, SELECT the box that says "Timecode" and UN-CHECK "Ignore Hours"
You will now see a new multi-cam sequence in your Project Tab/Window.
RIGHT-CLICKyour new multi-cam sequence and SELECT "Open in Timeline"

  • Syncing footage from two cameras

I will be filming a wedding tomorrow with a friend and we will be using two different cameras. I am wondering how to sync the footage so that when we go to edit it, we can use the sound from one camera and the footage from both, specifically we want to have some close-ups and some footage from further away. I have previously only used one camera to film. Any suggestions on how to do this in FCP?

Thanks for all the help! Sounds like we'll just make sure we get the exact same shot to start, then film from there, making sure we don't turn our cameras off at all. From there, I'll use the multiclip on FCP 6. Correct me if I'm wrong about any of this please Thanks!
Umm, okay. In that case, plan on spending about three hours trying to figure it out. Capture two short clips, about 5 minutes, from each camera.
There is nothing intuitive or elegant about FCP's multicamera paradigm. It's lame compared to every other product on the market. But we're stuck with it.
It works. but it requires many silly and seemingly unnecessary steps to get anything done. And when you open your project later, you'll have forgotten all the silly steps. Have the manual at your side. The gotchas are numerous and difficult to find. Just got through the setup one step at t a time. Over and over, eventually it will work again. Remember this: it really does work and 99% of our questions here are easily resolvable and simple user errors.
Tip: There is a huge difference between the terms CUT and SWITCH. Cutting makes an edit in the timeline. Switch merely changes the output. See? It's a lame.

  • Sync photos from two libraries

How can I sync photos from two libraries? after syncing one of them I close that library and open the other and choose to select certain albums and the warning pops up that if I sync the current selection all others will be replaced with the current library. So it appears that you can't add to the ATV hard drive additional photos from the second library without losing the content you already have from the first one.Is streaming the answer, and if so how do you do that?

You can't sync more then 1 library with the apple tv. Your only option would be to sync with one and stream with the other. Just make sure on the second library that you set it to share and then go to computers on the apple tv and select the shared library. ATV will give you a code that you will set on the second library when you have itunes open. Put in the code and you will be able to stream

  • My clips from my camera became completely different  later

I had clips from my camera that I put into imovie and it's just fine, then later on out of nowhere when I start it it says something like "this imovie projact is made for an older version of imovie, would you like to upgrade it and make it match your current version"
Strange thing is i never upgraded my imovie or anything and now I open it and the videos are in the trash, but isntead of the clips I have, it's dragonball z clips with the filename of my files which makes no logical sense. How can I get my clips back and why did this happen?

    hi
how can I sync dates from 2 cameras. From a wedding, my camera had the correct date, the borrowed one was about 11hrs out but not exactly. I want to change all the pics from the 2nd camera to sync with the first. I've already imported.

    Use "Metadata→Adjust date and time".

  • Syncing two video clips from different cameras.

When both video clips are on the timeline filmed with two cameras to get different angles, is there a a keyboard shortcut to move either clip one frame at a time, or while listening to the audio a way to move the clips incremently until both videos are in sync. Some of the filming I used a 'clap' method, but wasn't able to always do this. Basically I think I am asking for fine adjustments along the timeline via the keyboard, frame by frame.

You can select the clip in the timeline and press:
"." (dot) to move right by 1 frame
"," (comma) to move left by 1 frame
":" (colon) to move right by 5 frames
";" (semicolon) to move left by 5 frames
If you keep the key pressed the clip will slowly move either wy.
You can also select one clip in the timeline and type a number n: this will appear in a small window labeled Move; when you press Enter the selected clip will move n frames to the right. For example type 8 and Enter and the clip will move right by 8 frame. To move left by 8 frames type 8, left arrow, "-", Enter (to enter negative numbers (to move left) first enter the value and then add a "-" in front of the number).
Make sure the tool is the Selection Tool (arrow) otherwise instead of moving the clip you apply other actions (slip, roll, etc.).

  • How can I adjust video from two cameras that are out of sync?

Hi - I've just recorded someone speaking on two cameras with the intention of cutting clips in from the second camera while using the video and soundtrack from the main camera, however the two video files are out of sync by half a second or so by the end. How can I 'stretch' the shorter clip so they coincide properly? Thanks, David.

    David
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
    Typically, select the clip,
as you hold down the Alt key of the computer main keyboard, tap the left or right arrow key once. Each tap = 1 frame nudge.
as you hold down the Shift+Alt keys of the computer main keyboard, tap the left or right arrow key once. Each tap = 5 frames nudge.
If you are working with audio editing, consider Edit Menu/Project Settings/General with Audio Display Format = Milliseconds.
Please let us know if any of the above worked for you.
    Thank you.

  • Sync two audio clips from two angles of the same shoot?

I don't know if this is possible, however I was wondering if it is possible to automatically sync two clips from the same shoot. I have footage from an event which has two angles being filmed at the same time, I am currently manually matching the audio and video to make sure it's in sync however I wondered if there was a way of FCP doing this for you? Doing it manually is fine, but it would be neat if there was a way to automatically do it.
I think this may be a pipe dream, but I'm curious to know either way.

If you don't have matching timecode and you don't wish to purchase Pluraleyes...
then you can use FCP's multiclip editing process to sync in-points and out-points on video from the two cameras.
Since it appears this would be your first time using this feature I'd recommend reading the following helpful tutorial:

  • How to make a single multi-view clip from different cameras?

    Hi,
I recorded one conversation between two people with two different cameras (i.e., a camera per person) and I'd like to create a single video clip where the two clips from the two cameras are positioned side by side, i.e., one clip of the two people talking. I tried creating a Multicam clip but I didn't see an option to export the sequence as a single clip (also there was no option of how to place the clips which suggested that Multicam clip may not be the solution for this).
Is there a way to do that in Final Cut Pro X?
Of course, this would also involve synchronising the two clips based on the audio waveform and then detaching the audio from the non-master clip.
Any advice and recommendations will be highly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Katya

  • Editing a movie with video from two camera angles

I made video of the home birth of our third child using a miniDV and a Nisis DV6 camera. The DV6 has very lousy sound, but some of the DV6 video was critical to use for a period of time. I imported the overlapping clips, exported the audio on both, muted the DV6 audio, then moved the audio from the miniDV clip so it lined up with the DV6 audio. With a little more fading in/out on the audio from the two tracks I seemlessly/gracefully switch camera angles and preserved good audio.
I have a comment (a wishlist item) and a question. I wish I would have had the ability to take the two overlapping video clips, line up the audio waveforms and at the same time overlap the video clips on the timeline. I wish I could have then played both clips at the same time with the ability to switch between the two camera angles. I would take the ability to view both camera angles without the ability to switch between camera angles in real time, but then I'd wish I had the ability to specify which clip to use at any point in the timeline rather than having to manually insert the video from one camera angle or the other the other then insert a transition. Does any Apple-compatible video editing software thats provide some or all of the capability I desire? If Apple software developers are out there I hope you think this might be another great innovation.

As David and Karsten said: FinalCut Express is really the software, you are looking for. I have only worked with it twice (unfortunately I am still waiting for my - first - Mac now for two weeks, so as a Win-user I had no chance to have a more intensive look on FCE). But it is a great program.
What David said about the learning: It is quite easy. I have learned digital video editing on Adobe Premiere and on a Avid-machine, which is nearly the same as handling FinalCut. You'll perhaps need one evening. But after that you'll have the basic knowledge for editing your videos. The rest comes step by step. It is just learning-by-doing.
Another advice: Adobe Premiere Elements is also a good program for what your want to do. But it is much cheaper and a bit easier to learn. For editing simple home-movies perhaps the better choice. It has even a build-in DVD-authoring.
