Syncing contacts creates duplicates

I would be grateful for any help. I don't sync my iPhone 3GS as often as I would like because when I do, I end up with all my contacts being duplicated. What I want is for all new/edited/deleted entries on my PC to be appropriately adjusted on my iPhone, and all new/edited/deleted items on my iPhone to be appropriately adjusted on my PC. (It would be even better if it asked which version is the correct one.)
When I sync, my entire contacts list ends up being duplicated, so I have 2 of almost everything.
I don't understand the collected Contacts concept. At one point my collected contacts was a 90% duplicate of my Contacts folder.
I am clearly doing something wrong. If anybody can help, that would be awesome.
Thanks!

I am using Outlook 2007 on my PC.
I am not using Mobile Me; rather I am running the sync on my PC using iTunes. The duplicates were on both my iPhone and my computer, but they didn't always appear to be identical. It is somewhat complicated by the fact that I use Plaxo to update my contacts folder(s) on my PC.
I worked with Plaxo to combine all contacts folders, and then I went through each item and deleted all duplicates. Then I synced with my phone, and finally got it down to one unduplicated list. This was tedious, since I have over 1,000 contacts.
Now I am getting ready to sync, and I am not sure what to check on the sync menu. It asks whether I want contacts added on the phone synced to my Collected Contacts folder. Why add it to a separate folder instead of my main contacts folder? Does this add a separate item that you then use to update the main folder?
Thank you and sorry for all the questions.

  • Syncing ical creates duplicates

How do I stop creating duplicates when I sync iCal or Contacts to my iPad? I'm using Mountain Lion and iOS on iPad is up-to-date.

Usually that happens because you're syncing both with iCloud or another CalDAV server and with iTunes. Choose one or the other.

  • Google Contacts sync - Contacts created on phone not being sent to Google

    Hello,
I have setup my contacts with my Google account, and I can see all my Google contacts on my Z3 compact. If I create a contact in Google contacts, I will see it on my Z3.
However, if I create a contact on my mobile phone, it isn't being sent to Google. For the life of me, I can't see any options or setting to send new phone contacts to Google, either manually or automatically.
Shouldn't a sync work both ways? On my last phone this "just worked".
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

  • SYNC CONTACTS - REMOVE DUPLICATES

I have the latest version of OVI on my PC which I use to SYNC CONTACTS. Problem is it DUPLICATES the contacts on my NOKIA 5230 even if I DELETE all the contacts listed on the PC OVI list. My understanding of SYNCing is that the PC and the NOKIA should have the same information. Either the SYNC is not working or there is a setting somewhere that needs to be changed? MY NOKIA is showing over 500 contacts when it should be half. Manual deletions to remove all the duplicates is a long job and the SYNC process always returns it back to over 500.
I have set my NIKA to save all contact to the Phone Memory (not the SIM). Any ideas of to avoid and remove the DUPLICATES

    Hey,
U hav 2 b too careful if u wanna use 3 way sync, change in 1 place will affect all ur contacts.
My few suggestions.  Always do hav a backup of your phone contents. Regular backup-ing of your phone contents r always recommended.
Open Nokia Ovi Suite, log in ur ovi(nokia) account.
Nokia Ovi Suite > Tools > Options > Contacts > Sync your Nokia account in Ovi.com
(Above will be enabled if and only if u hav logged in ur Sign into Ovi)
Once sync is successful, ur contacts will get updated on your phone, Nokia Ovi Suite and on ur Ovi.com as well
    3 way = Phone, PC and Ovi.com(Cloud)
Again, i recommend u 2 take a backup of ur contacts always, Sync conflict or 4 any reason, if ur contacts get damaged, same will b reflcting on all 3 places.

  • Contacts creates duplicates and loses data

Contacts has been causing problems: I created a new entry; this created over 36,000 duplicates. I entered data into the Notes section; this seemed to save - but when I returned the following day, it had disappeared and reset to an earlier version. The biggest problem is that it loses new data and does not update.
I also had to Force Quit in Activity Monitor an AddressBookSync app (I'm unsure of the specific name of the app), which had been hogging over 96% of CPU memory for over an hour and slowing everything else down. The core app and its supportive apps seem to have some fundamental bugs in them.
    Can anyone please:
    1. identify the likely causes
    2. identify the likely solution, based on (1)
    Many thanks.
PS I've an iMac and an Airbook, both running Mavericks.

Ah.. in that case you're referring to *.Mac Sync*, rather than iSync.
The *.Mac Sync* forum is here: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=957
It's probably better to post in there as that's where the .Mac Sync experts are!

  • PC Sync / Synchronize created duplicate address bo...

I just Synchronized two 6126 phones to pick up changes to my Contacts (MS Outlook). The first phone worked fine, but on the second phone I see that I now have duplicates of every entry in my address book. To fix this I would like to blast the current address book on that phone and then copy a fresh copy of my contacts from MS Outlook (like a one-way synchronize). How would I do that?  I'm afraid to delete every entry in the address book and then Sync with my PC as it might then delete every entry in my MS Outlook Contacts.

    HI
If you want to have both Contacts entery seperately,Then you have to make two profiles on your MS-Outlook SW.
t hen you can have both your enteries seperately.

  • Is there any way to sync contacts created on iPhone that saved to Outlook through an exchange account without CSV migration?

I thought setting up my work email on my iPhone would be a wonderful help in making after-hours labor easier...I had no idea how much I would be blending my business and personal life. I didn't know it would set Outlook as the default account for new contacts so, all newly created contacts became outlook entries. The second I noticed some really random numbers in my work account virtual roladex, I did the research and immediately made the change. (It would be really difficult to explain that "4/20 Josh" is legitimately a brewery friend to whom I was introduced on April 20th, at a special beer release event.) Needless to say, I am hoping to separate the work and non-work friends.
Now I'm wondering if there is a way to migrate or backup those contacts to an alternate account other than through a CSV file migration. A lot of contacts are saved with photos and strange fields of info, it would be great if there were a better way to transfer the content than by way of commas.
    Thoughts or suggestions?
    Many thanks!!!

Worked like a charm and resolved my problem totally. The only issue I had is that, unlike the Computer (Mac OS). the iPad doesn't give constant visibility to what it is doing (feedback), so I wasn't initially sure it had done anything.
When I opened my emailed message with .vcf file attached, and tapped the .vcf attachment icon, I saw activity on the icon for just a few seconds, then it reverted to the original with nothing apparently happening. After about 30 seconds, the secondary menut popped up indicating the transfer of 1200 addresses would be completed, if I approved the action. Another 10 to 15 seconds then transpired before the completed Contact list appeared on the ipad. So you must be patient, if you have a large Addressbook. That's reasonable, but unexpected lack of feedback left me wondering, like so many other things on the iPad.
THank you for the assist. Apparently Apples Mac Genius people did not know this procedure, and I will pass it on to my local Apple Store Instructor.

  • Firefox with Profile-sync-daemon creates duplicate cache directory

Apparently I suck at symlinking. I wouldn't want to waste anybody's time. I'll revisit the topic once I learn the basics of symlinking. I'll use ASD in the meantime.

graysky wrote:@OP - Yes, since v21 of firefox, it uses ~/.cache for the caching just like chromium.  The simple solution is to mount ~/.cache as tmpfs in your fstab.  I documented this is psd's man page.  Here is a link describing how to do it.
I'd rather preserve contents of ~/.cache between reboots. Especially because it holds nautilus thumbnails. I'd rather keep my Firefox cache as well.

  • Contacts created on iPhone won't sync with exchange, only via USB

When I create a new contact on my iPhone from within the phone app, it doesn't get synced to my exchange server, in fact it doesn't show up anywhere in the contacts app or under contacts in the phone app. If I create a new contact from the contacts app it only allows me to create it in my exchange contacts folder but it does sync properly. When I create a contact from within the phone app I am not given a choice of group at all and unless I have a recent call from that contact, it is nowhere to be found on my phone or computer. So the question is how do I get new contacts created on my phone from within the phone app to sync with exchange? The only way I have been able to sync contacts created within the phone app thus far has been with iTunes via USB which works fine but I want to sync contacts bidirectionally via exchange ota.
    Thanks for any help

I have more information to share.
When you launch the Contacts app on the iPhone, hit the "Groups" button in the top left. What I see on that page are these 3 sections:
    All Contacts >
    From My Mac
    All From My Mac >
    Group A >
    Group B >
    Group C >
    etc
    Foobar (Exchange)
    Foobar Global Address List >
After many hours of trial and error, I have come to the understanding that the iPhone Contacts app has potentially multiple data stores which seem to correspond to each sync source configured (eg AddressBook, Exchange, etc.) Refering to my example above, I have enabled Contacts syncing with my AddressBook (via iTunes) and an Exchange mail account, so my iPhone shows 2 separate sections with the generic "All Contacts" appearing as the first section at the top.
Entering the contact listings page via the "All Contacts" button will show an integrated list of contacts from all sync sources (in my case, two: contacts from AddressBook on my Mac and contacts from my Foobar Exchange account).
If you click the "+" button to add a new contact when you have entered the listing page via "All Contacts", it seems the record is only stored on the iPhone and does NOT get sync'd. Specifically, it does not get synced to the Mac AddressBook nor to the Exchange account.
However, if you have entered the listings page via any group in the "From My Mac" section or "Foobar (Exchange)" section, and create a new contact via the "+" button there, that contact DOES get sync'd to the appropriate sync source (AddressBook or Exchange in my case).
Furthermore, if you enter the listings page via a specific group in the "From My Mac" section (eg "Group A") and create a new contact from in there, it will appear in "Group A" in AddressBook after sync. If you enter the listings page via the generic "All From My Mac" button, then the new contact will be added to whatever group you have specified in iTunes (under the iPhone Info tab etc. as mentioned in the prior post).
All up, I guess, there may not be a bug here after all. I must simply always remember to add new contacts when I am in the "All From My Mac" section, if I want them to be synced to my Mac.
However, I do think that it's a confusing and poor user experience (and may lead to loss of data) if you add new contacts from the generic "All Contacts" entry point, because they will NOT be synced as you'd expect them to. I am guessing this also might only happen when you have multiple sync sources defined, simply because the app doesn't know which sync source to associate them with: AddressBook or Exchange? But, at the point of adding that new contact, the app should prompt you for the sync source to use, or at least WARN you that your contact is going to be an orphan record solely residing forever more on your iPhone. If you ever reset your iPhone those contact records would be lost forever.

  • Every time I sync my iPhone (IOS 7) in iPhoto it creates duplicate images

Every time I sync my iPhone (IOS 7) in iPhoto it creates a duplicate, but not on my Mac, how do I slove or fix this? even if I delete all of the duplicates manually on my phone or Mac, if I sync, it creates duplicates

Have you ever had all 7 of them synced before? Are these ringtones you made yourself? Is there a chance they could exceed 30 seconds in length? Is there a chance you have moved the original file location on the computer? May need the answers to a couple more questions to try and determine an answer.

  • Icloud sync created duplicate contacts...can't get rid of them

Ever since I began syncing my iPhone via iCloud, multiple entries have popped up in my Contacts.  In some cases I'll have 4 or 5 duplicate Contacts when I started with just one.  I tried deleting them manually (which took forever) but they just come back.
I tried shutting off iCloud sync and doing it the old way, but I realized that many contacts were missing.  (i.e. I must have deleted them from locations other than iCloud, and that's the only place where they reside now.)
I feel stuck.  This is very frustrating.  iCloud was supposed to make my life easier and it's screwing things up.  Any suggestions?
PS - I have an iMac running OS X 10.8.4 and an iPhone 5.

My Contacts Backup Pro has a 4+ rating, but it's up to you if you want to try it or not.  If you haven't done so already, you might want to take a look at Apple's KB article on duplicate iCloud contacts: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4147.  It's not a very common problem, and can be caused by things like attempting to sync contacts with both iCloud and iTunes.
If you have cleaned up your contacts only to see duplicates reappear on their own, you might need to get iCloud support to help you with this one as it's a rare problem.  Then may need to have a senior engineer take a look at your account to determine what's causing it.

how can I avoid duplicates on contacts and how do I get contacts created on iPhone/ipad synchronized on my mac? so far it doesn't work correctly, just sometimes. same for icalendar

On your Mac, for duplicates, switching Contacts off then back on in System Preferences > iCloud may prevent duplicates.
On the iPhone / iPad tap Settings > iCloud. Make sure Contacts and Calendars are swtiched on.
Try restarting your Mac and your iOS devices when items won't sync as they should.
To restart an iOS device:  Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

I assume iCloud should do same that "Sync with this iPhone over Wi-Fi" in iTunes does.
    How do they coexist?

Thanks for reply but somehow desagre as I just drow attention to the iTunes that Sync iCal Calendars indicates:
