Syncing Contacts using iCLoud

Why is it that I can see all my contacts on my iPad2 but I can't see them on my iPhone 4Gs? Both running iOS 5.01 and using iCloud to sync.

On the iPhone tap Settings > iCloud
Switch Contacts off then back on then reset the iPhone.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

I have an iPhone 4 and the latest 32gb iPad running 6.0. I have had the phone for about 18 months and the iPad for about 3 months. Contact sync is turned ON on both devices but I am missing several contacts on the iPad that are on the phone. Any suggestions? Thanks for any help.

a) Export them to CSV in the googlemail web page, then import this file into Thunderbird's Address Book. Take care to align the data fields.
b) Use an add-on such as Google Contacts or gContactSync to create a live link. I refer the latter add-on; both have to contend with a fundamental mismatch in the way googlemail and thunderbird handle street addresses. This synchronizing approach is much the better way if you are trying to keep multiple address books in synch. I found it worthwhile to create a googlemail account purely for the purpose of associating a phone-related address book with my phone, which doesn't ''need'' all the email addresses, street addresses etc, nor all the contacts for whom I know only an email address but no phone number.

I don't believe that is possible.
iCloud was released after iOS 4. And your iPhone 3G cannot run any iOS past iOS 4.2.1. So you're out of luck until you purchase a newer iPhone.

A customer of mine is having issues syncing her Outlook 2003 contacts with her iPhone and iPad using iCloud. Personally, i only use iCloud for my iPod Touch, and have had no personal experience with syncing contacts or using Outlook to do so.
I assisted her remotely in upgrading her iPhone 3GS to iOS 5, and during the initial iCloud setup, i'm not sure what she did, but it ended up pulling all of the contacts from her husband's Outlook profile into her iPhone, and from there to iCloud, and her iPad. She freaked out, and when i assured her that it could be fixed just by turning the Contacts syncing in iCloud off, it also removes her current phone numbers and such saved prior to the update.
Her Outlook 2003 is set up with two profiles, one for her husband and one for her. Each profile has it's own contacts databases, but iTunes is syncing it from her husband's, despite no defaults being set. She, of course, wants the contacts from her Outlook account synced instead of her husband's, but Outlook 2003 cannot export contacts to the vCard format, which would be the obviously easiest way to import them into iCloud, using the web portal.
What would be the best course of action? Sadly, upgrading her PC wouldn't be worth the money at this point, it's an aged machine, and running Windows XP, so the iCloud control panel isn't compatible, and has to be accessed through the web portal.

As far as I can tell, there is not one post anywhere on this forum about how to get contacts from outlook into icloud via importing vcards or any other method. Nobody who knows anything at icloud is on this forum.

Maverick won't permit syncing Address Book or Calendar by USB to iPhone or iPad and permits only syncing by iCloud, which I don't want to use. Any ideas on how to sync without using iCloud?

ymcneil - thanks for the work around. But isn't it amazing Apple forces us to do this to maintain our privacy.
I live in Australia where there are good privacy laws protecting citizens. I do not want to be forced to use iCloud when the data sits in the USA with weaker privacy laws and also able to be seen by the US Government under the Patriot Act. Further I suspect Apple will interrogate my contacts and calendar for commercial purposes and I do not want that either.
I chose to synch my calendar and contacts with my iphone and ipad. I have relied for years on carrying around my phone with my diary on it. I can no longer do that.
Whoever made this decision at Apple has to be someone who knows little about the world. I can actually see EU regulators getting very annoyed by this.
I too woud like the itunes mac to iphone/ipad local backup given back.

Unless your contacts are stored in an iCloud account, you should not expect them to transfer simply because you say you "synced using iCloud."
iCloud (or iTunes) backups of iOS devices do not store contacts.

Hi guys,
At the first, I have synced the contacts to iCloud using my MacBook from iPhone4. Some months back, I deleted some of my contacts in MacBook's Address Book that were synced. But, did not deleted contacts in iPhone. I guess, Mac & iPhone got synced while in Internet and I can't figure out those deleted contacts in iPhone.
Please help to retrieve those deleted contacts!

I still remember I back up using iTunes in MacBook. I think, it was 2 months back. Is there any chances of losing apps if I restore the back up?

My G5 with OSX 10.5.8 can't be upgraded further and is my main computer. Is there a work around to sync my iPhone 4 with address book contacts and calender without using iCloud? Is there a third party software that lets contacts and calendar events to be sync? P/S a newer computer is in the works but not just yet.

Ok this may be a dumb question but since I got the 5 and having issues with it skipping to a song instead of playing the one I want. When I try and create a ACC version of the song to test it I get the message saying I can access my music over the cloud. Can I sync without the cloud? if so how. I am not connected to the wifi or anything if that matters.

Syncing contacts without Icloud

I have zero interest in Icloud... I have different things on my Iphone than on my computer and on and on..bla bla bla I don't want the phone syncing with Icloud and often shut off the access to the phone when traveling and such for security reasons.. isn't there a way that I can just transfer my contacts and mail info only when plugged into my computer anymore? geesh why would I WANT to use Icloud when i can just plug it in and it'll trandfer faster and safer?

With that sort of fear, you have no business with a smart phone or with one that connects to the internet in any capacity.
You darn sure don't speak for the millions of users out there.
I'm no "big exec" type but I have a Mac at home, personal iPhone, business iPhone, personal iPad, and business desktop PC at my office. I'm able to sync my business Exchange account email, contacts, calendar events, notes, and reminders over the air with my business PC, personal Mac at home, and with all iOS devices without needing to connect all iOS devices to my PC at work and to my Mac at home on a daily basis, and the same for my personal iCloud account that is accessed on all.
You mean to tell me what I do is unusual among the millions of users throughout the world and is only for the "big exec" types, and how about for those without a computer that use an iPad in its place along with an iPhone?
If you have a Mac running OS X 10.9, you are no longer able to sync contacts direct with the address book or contacts app via the iTunes sync process, and email account mailboxes and email has never been synced with iTunes and never will.

E61 - complete failure to sync contacts using PC S...

I just bought an E61. I have 1151 contacts in Outlook. I originally tried to use Exchange to sync contacts but after getting about 300 or so across, the process failed. So I figured, oh well, I'll try PC Sync and get my contacts in that way. Repeatedly I am getting the following log error: "PC Sync was unable to insert the following entry to the mobile phone". For EVERY SINGLE CONTACT. When I watch the phone during the sync process there is definitely a connection and it looks like the phone is receiving the contacts... I have checked the memory on the phone and there is certainly room to hold all of my contacts. I have Googled every permutation of 'Nokia E61 Symbian contacts not syncing' etc etc and found NO solutions anywhere. Maybe I am the only one in the world who has got this problem out of the box? I have tried 3 resets on the device to try and start from scratch. Nothing has worked. Please tell me there is a solution to my problem.

As promised, here's the definitive response from Vodafone - it does appear to be a ridiculous constraint imposed by Nokia.
Vodafone support stated; "...reason for this is that the Nokia handsets have shared mamory but also only limited memory allocated to each functionality (calendar/ contacts etc). To troubleshoot this simply select only one functionality to synchronise and try each one. When it fails on a specific one then they know which one is too big. They can then reduce the size of that particular database and it will work..."
In practice, this means that less that 3.9kB is allocated by Nokia to handling contacts. My phone only have a modest number of entries in each function and the total memory in use is ~6MB, leaving 59MB free but unusuable.
How crazy's that!!!!!!
Vodafone are investigating possible alternatives.
