Syncing downloading and streaming

Like a lot of others I am having problems since v 2.0. While I work it out I have several short questions.
1) During streaming video should I turn off sync at ITunes? It will otherwise be syncing for the next 20 years since it is so slow (took an hour for 12 photos yesterday)
2) Does downloading movies (podcasts or from ItunesU) interfere with syncing and/or streaming? Should I pause this if I want to use streaming on my apple tv upstairs?
3) Should I bring down the little apple tv and hook it up by ethernet to get content synced to it? Does that retain when it connects later wirelessly?
4) If I download an HD movie from ITunes store how long does it usually take? (Again this is wireless)
5) If I decide I am not interested in doing #4 should I go back to version 1 of Apple TV?

I don't have a lot of (or any) answers for your questions, only some more information. I am having a lot of problems also since "upgrading" to 2.0 - basically any syncing is going at a snail's pace.
First, a new "feature" according to an Apple TV product specialist I am working with (he just discovered this in the process of trying to solve my slow sync problem) is that whatever iTunes library you are synced with (the Main Library) also allows you by default to stream, and there doesn't appear to be a way to turn this off. You can turn on and off other Shared Libraries.
I have well over 160Gb of content, so I am only syncing 1 playlist to the Apple TV. So I obviously chose Custom Sync. My synced content is uploading over 802.11g at the rate of about 3 hours of content per 24 hour period (about 30 times slower than before the upgrade), on the other hand, the streamed content becomes playable in about 1 to 2 seconds and I don't notice any untoward delay (e.g., I can fast forward through it pretty well).
In addition, I get strange behavior when checking the "Show only the synced items..." check box. I have started syncing again so it first shows only the message "No Content". Trying again gets a long message about how I should sync or download from iTunes to get Content." Trying a third time (meaning selecting My TV Shows from the menu) shows ALL my iTunes Library content available for streaming, however the show names get randomly replaced with Unknown Artist - and which shows get displayed as Unknown Artist changes at random also. They all play (as does music and movies, none of which are synced).
I am about ready to "downgrade" (upgrade?) back to 1.1
So
1) I don't think you CAN turn off syncing
2) Don't know
3) I don't know that this will help, my WiFi connection is WELL under saturated.
4) Don't know, and it depends on your connection - however you can start playing back before it is fully downloaded
5) There are some nice features implemented in 2 (I like that they finally added ratings control so that I can block content for my children), but if it is unusable, I will downgrade to 1.1 and wait for 2.1

  • Any ideas on how to step up my internets download and streaming speed?

I just purchased a NEW computer 10 days ago and every since it's installation, my internet (specifically downloads and streaming) is slower than it was on my previous computer. Downloads on my xbox take a lot longer as well as it's setup in my wireless network. I live in Buffalo NY and have Verizon DSL with a westell 6100 modem and a Netgear router. I have done 3 speed tests in the past two days with these results:
    #1 - 1.01 Mb/s download 0.65 Mb/s upload 50 ms latency
    #2 - 1.01 Mb/s download 0.67 upload Mb/s 48 ms latency
    #3 -  0.52 Mb/s download 0.62 Mb/s upload 58 ms latency
    #3 being the most recent.
Any ideas on how to step up my connection speed? The stop and go of video buffering is driving me insane!

Does the speed improve when you remove the new PC from the mix? What operating system does the old computer and new computer have?

The first to bring me 1Gbps Fiber for $30/m wins!

  • Sync music and stream photos??

Anyone know if it is possible to Sync itunes music and stream the photos from the same computer?? Or even better sync some pictures and then have the option to stream more pictures from that computer as needed?
    Thanks

  • Brand new MacBook Pro has really slow download and streaming speeds

I'm new to Macs, and don't know much about computers in general. But I got a 13" MacBook Pro almost two weeks ago and have been experiencing really slow download and video streaming speeds. Pages load one image at a time, Netflix is almost impossible to use because the videos will stop buffering every five minutes even if I let them buffer for more than ten minutes. I haven't been experiencing any issues with wifi on my phone, and I've troubleshot our router. I'm not sure what it could be--but then again, I don't know a whole lot. Before I go running off to the Apple Store or call support, is there anything I can try in the meantime? Thanks!
    Here are the system specs:
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Memory  4 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  Intel Iris
    Software  OS X 10.9.3 (13D65)
74.23 GB free out of 120.47 GB

Check with your isp regarding your download & upload speeds as well as streaming.  You need to determine if the issue is on their end.  You can also check on the speedtest.com website.  Compare what your isp tells you to the net speed website.

  • Icloud synced devices and streaming music

Please excuse my novice questions, but i need help understanding how iCloud influences my data usage. I have iPhone 5, iPad and MacBook 2011. I have checked the iCloud sync so that all devices talk. Also, i signed up for iCloud back up - $25 or whatever it is for the annual fee.
When i listen to music from my iPhone (which i do frequently at my job) - am i hearing music that's native to my iPhone OR am i "streaming" every song from the cloud and incurring data fees?
Also, when i signed up for iCloud, did it copy all of my music from my computer Hard Drive or is that music still there?
Lastly, i signed up for NPR Podcast and somehow i don't think it's actually "downloading" to my iPhone. I think it only streams. How can I set it up to actually download the information so that i can listen even when i don't have WiFi and so that i'm not burning up data allotment?

    RodeoQueen wrote:
Ok, i see that my iTunes Match button is OFF. Does this mean i'm listening to music directly from my iPhone? If i turn the Match button ON, will it play from albums native to my phone or stream from iCloud?
Yes to both questions.  If you have iTunes Match turned off, you can only listen to music actually stored on your phone.  You could also just leave it on, and just go to Settings>Music and turn Show All Music to Off and accomplish the same thing.  With this set to off, it will only display songs stored on your phone.
When you have iTunes Match turned on, and you play a song that is already on your phone, it does not stream from iCloud (since the song is already stored locally on your phone).  If you play a song that is not on your phone, it will stream from iCloud, but still downloads in the background.
I do understand that when I have WiFi on, i'm not using data from my data plan. However, at my office there is no WiFi, so i would be streaming.
If possible, download the music you plan on listening to while you're on wifi at home so you don't have to use your data plan to listen to it at work.
On you podcast question, I only download them to iTunes and sync them to my devices.  I don't have any experience trying to "stream" them.  I think if you did the same, you would experience the interruption in playback when you're away from wifi.

  • ATV - sync music and stream movies

sorry if this question has been asked before, but i've searched high and low and haven't been able to sort my particular issue...
i would like my itunes music to be synced with my ATV but i would like to stream the same itunes' movies. is this possible?

Content (tv shows by way of example) which is streamed from a primary library is listed under my tv shows not shared tv shows, content streamed from a secondary library is listed under shared tv shows.
    (Please excuse my unsupported nomenclature)
Also ensure that the option only to show synced content is not selected in the sync options on itunes.

  • Download and stream music

I'm building a flash website with a music section. I want the
user to be able to click on a track to stream a music file or have
the option to right click and "save as" to download it. Anyone have
any experience with this? Not quite sure how to set it up.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,]
    Sean

    You can NOT downgrade iOS.
That said, millions people have updated to iOS 5 without experiencing the problems you report. Why don't you try some basic troubleshooting before you resort to drastic measures.
Restoring from your backup will NOT revert the phone to iOS 4.
First, try to reset all settings. This will re-set the network settings and clear any personalization (wallpaper, custom assigned ringtones, etc.) but you will not lose any data.
Then, try a simple re-set. If that doesn't work, try restoring from your last backup. If that doesn't work, Erase all content and settings and set it up as a new device.  It's possible one or more of the apps you are trying to use

  • Data rate when creating Quicktime h.264: difference between download and streaming ?

I've got a question on data rate setting when creating a quicktime movie with h.264 codec:
In the Compression settings dialog I can restrict the data rate to a certain value (e.g. in my case I use 20.000 kbit/s for creating a HD1080i movie).
There is an additional drop box "Optimized for" where I can select between "download", "streaming" and some other value.
Is anybody aware of the exact meaning of these settings ? My impression is, that using "download" I set the average bit-rate, allowing much higher bit-rates in peaks, while "streaming" sets a maximum bit-rate. Is that correct ? or are any other parameters affected by this setting ?
I now discovered, that the output file when using "streaming" with restriction of 20.000 kbit/s leads to a file with average bitrate of only approx 17.000 kbit/s (while it's more or less exactly 20.000 when using the "download" setting). Does that mean, that the overall quality of my output file would be worse ? or would only peak rates be affected (e.g. scenes with a lot of movement) and the overall quality remains the same ?
Happy to learn if anyone has any experiences / best practices on this topic.

Restrict isn't, it seems, a hard limit. When I specify 18Mbps it seems to run up to 21Mbps. But, that's fine since it's certainly isn't excessive and if I really cared I could set it at 15Mbps.
I suspect it might be more accurate with 2-pass. Also, i never ever use the Apple codec. i use x264 which allows more encoding tools. And, even it is not a super good H.264 encoder.
Using rates under 2400Mbps is IMHO asking for the near impossible for good quality SD video.

  • How to setup Sync and Stream for Different Photo Libraries?

I've read through most posts, but still can't get ATV to both sync and stream photos.
On my MBP I have my iTune library with music, movies, etc. I also have several iPhoto libraries for each year ('05, '06 '07, etc). I initially set up ATV to sync to my MBP iTune Library and my iPhoto '07 iPhoto library and everything went fine. Even if ATV->source->my music->photos, I get the photos streamed fine.
The question is how do I stream the other iPhoto libraries? If I go into MBP-> iTunes->Devices->ATV->Photos and deselect sync, I can't select any other Photo Albums and lose the ones I just sync'ed. If I try ATV->source->my itune lib->connect to new iTunes->sync #, but then when I go to MBP-> iTunes->devices->ATV there is no window to insert the # to stream.
What am I missing? Usually Apple is very logical, but this has me stumped. Basically I would like to sync and store my music on ATV, but be able to stream different photo libraries, the photos don't have to be stored on ATV. If I could sync some and stream others that would be better.
Can anyone give me a step-by-step on how to do this? I must be missing a step somewhere. Thx

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
It's debatable whether you could ever sync and stream photos from the same library. tv v 1.1 gave that impression because it showed photos in a synced source and a streamed source when the source was the same library. However as they were effectively the same photos it was never really clear what was happening.
Now that synced and streamed content is in the same menu under v 2.0 it really doesn't matter. If your itunes library is synced to your tv then you must sync your photos, if your itunes library is stream only then you must stream your photos.
Moving on, because this doesn't actually address your problem, which is that you want to sync or stream multiple iphoto libraries from the same itunes library. Well you can't, although you have a couple of workarounds.
If you must have multiple libraries, then you could open additional user accounts, stream the itunes libraries in those user accounts and allocate a single library to iphoto under each user account. This is quite messy if you have more than a couple of libraries and will not work with more than 5 libraries, which you may well have if you are working by years.
Your second option and I don't think you'll like it too much is to put all your photos in one library. To be honest I'm not really sure why you split your photos up as you do, I would have thought that iphoto was more than capable of coping with photos from all years.

  • Syncing AND streaming from one computer

I admit, I'm an Apple novice; however, I'm doing my best to catch up! Just got a 40GB ATV for xmas and have synced up all my music but thinking about just streaming my video content. Is there a way to keep all my music synced but stream the video or is it an "all or non" type situation?

    Hi There,
I have the same setup (40gb ATV) and have all of my music sync'd and stream all of my video.
You need to select the ATV in your iTunes devices list (on the left hand side). On the "Summary" tab, click the "custom sync" button, and make sure the "show only the sync'd items.." checkbox is empty. On the "Movies" tab, everything should be blank, on the "Music" tab you can choose what you want to sync. Once your ATV has sync'd again, all should be fine.
If you want to avoid a long list of video files, you can create video playlists in iTunes, and then turn on "all" playlists under audio/video settings on the ATV.
Don't forget that to stream, you need your iTunes library open at all times.

  • Slow iPlayer downloads and problem streaming

I bought a iPad 4 largely to use to surf the web and to download and stream from iplayer and itv player then broadcast to Apple TV via Airplay.
It has always been painfully slow trying to stream with lots of stuttering but it did work and downloads were OK - I could download 3 or 4 programs in an evening while web surfing. We recently upgraded our internet to 20MB/s and upgraded to iOS7 thinking that would fix it - it's now got worse!
Speedtest shows that I have a download speed around 4.3 to 4.8 MB/s - which is pretty similar to the speed on my boyfriends MacBook Pro over the same network.
However, the effective speed I get is more like <0.1 to max 1MB/s when downloading from iPlayer and it won't stream at all, buffers all the time and is totally pixilated. In contrast my boyfriends MacBook plays beautiful high res videos from the same site with no problem. We use a DNS service as we live in Malaysia but my boyfriend is using the same DNS on the same WiFi network through the same router with no problems. Trying to download a program it will start to count down time then jump up, then down a bit, then way up, mess around for a while then just sit at 'more than 3 hours' for the night
Being in Malaysia I am usually trying to load in UK mid-morning, which I wouldn't have expected to be the most peak time.
We have changed the route settings to disable QoS and MVV as suggested on here with no effect.
It's not in a case and I have it propped up near the router to try minimise any blockage of the signal.
Any ideas for why the iPad should be so much drastically slower at downloading and unable to stream (same problem with ITV player, no difference between using the Apps and the website) ? Any suggestions to fix?

I got same issue. any other solution to fix it . The advice solution is in vain. thx!
    Issues:
While download programs,   it began fast then slowly sometimes stop. The remaining timing will change from 2 min. to 1 hours.
My ISP is ok with 100MB . Anyone encounter the issues. thx
    IPAD2
    IOS8
Note: I install the BBC iplayer app on my smartphone with no issues. I also try to un/install the APP, but it is in vain.
    thx!

  • How to sync iPad and iPhone 4?

How do I sync an iPad and iPhone 4 so that they can both use my cellphone number?
Also when I try to update my iPhone 4 in iTunes, it says my iPhone software update server could not be contacted, what does that mean?

Just plug the two devices into the Mac, as if the other one didn't exist. iTunes will keep them separate and allow you control sync of apps and media content as you wish.
As to iCloud, for the iTunes in the Cloud feature, if you use the same iTunes Store account on both the iPad and the iPhone, you'll want to turn off the automatic download option in the Settings -> Store preference pane on your devices. Then you can sync, download and update as you wish on each device.
    Regards.

Hi you have basicly 2 Options.
1 -if you Switch One fotostream on all 3 devices of yours which are working on the same apple id -all Fotos you Take with your iPad will be synchronized via icloud to the other 2 decvices ( w-lan and battery depending).
2- If you select foots or a whole album in iPhoto on your air or iMac and choose than puplish --> fotostream --> new or existing event you can key in a friends mail. If this friend has iCloud and iPhoto ( for iMac or MacBook ) and click on the link in the email it will download this fotos in the fotostream section in iPhoto. If he has a iPad, iPhone,... It will do it in the foto app and if he doesn't have a iCloud account at all and you choose "public web site" while publishing he can see your fotostream on a website.

  • Places and faces not syncing with photo stream

    Hello,
I put some of my pictures from my Mac Pro's iPhoto library into Photo Stream with the intention of grabbing them into my MacBook Pro's iPhoto library.
They download and the events are generated but the Faces and Places information did not come along :-(
I'm wondering if this is by design (I sincerely hope not!) or a bug...
    Any thoughts?

    Here's the English version
    http://www.apple.com/icloud/features/photo-stream.html
    It clearly states
when you take a photo on one device, it automatically appears on all your other devices. No syncing. No sending. Your photos are just there. Everywhere you want them.
No mention of Faces and Places there.
    Or
it automatically imports every picture from your Photo Stream into your photo library so you can edit, delete, and share the ones you want.
Again, no mention of Faces and Places here, or anywhere on that page.
    It's not a bug. It's just not a feature.
    Regards
    TD

  • Best Way to Capture Streaming mp# for Download and Burn?

Anyone have any suggestions on capturing streaming audio in mp3 format for download and burning to a CD-R disc for private listening away from the computer (Intel Duo2Core)?
What I want to capture is definately legal download but it only seems to want to download into Quicktime, and I can't figure how to get that into a format so I can import to iTunes and burn to a CD so I can listen in my car when I drive.

Actually that is one of the reasons I use Audio Hijack. Maybe WireTap is different now, but earlier versions would record ALL sounds, including system beeps and application alerts. Audio Hijack can record on a per application basis, excluding sounds from other apps that don't belong in that recording.
Audio Hijack records a standard audio file in the format of your choice (MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, WAV etc). Once it's recorded, you can play it back in any sound app you like, or move it into iTunes so you can sync it to your iPod, or burn the file to a CD.
It records in real time, so if you want to record an hour of audio, you have to let it run for an hour, like a VCR. This is the only way to capture real-time streams. That said, if you wanted to record a program like This American Life that is also available as a ready-made podcast or audio file, you should download the podcast version instead of recording it, because it would be faster to download the ready-made file instead of recording it in real time.
WireTap and Audio Hijack are for when no easily downloadable file is available, and only streams are provided.
