Syncing edited songs without creating duplicate files ... ideas?

I'm thrilled you can now move songs via iTunes to different computers. My issue is that I want to move songs when I change info for a song (ie. star rating, comment, etc.). If the song already exist on the other computer moving the song via iTunes creates a duplicate on the receiving computer. Ideas?

While also time consuming, the Consolidate command will do it and is automatic.
What you would do is go into your iTunes preferences and change the iTunes Music folder location. Pick something like a spare external drive or if you have enough room on your internal to duplicate your whole library, another spot there.
Now invoke the consolidate command. What this command does is copies any files not in the currently identified iTunes Music folder location into that location and updates the database so the song is now accessed from that location. Since you just change the location to somewhere else, ALL of your library is outside that location and will be copied into it.
So here is the part that helps you. All those 19 gigs of orphaned files are left behind. If the file is not used by iTunes it is not copied. So the new iTunes Music folder location ends up being a clean folder with only those files actively used by iTunes.
As that point you can either continue to use this new location and delete the old location from your computer. Or if you want everything back in the same place, clear out the old folder then change the location back to that folder and consolidate everything back. Again, will take a fair bit of time for many many gigs, but you can start it and go to bed, go to lunch, work, go watch a show as it is done automatically.
Cheers,
Patrick

  • HT2513 Older iCal calendars (used with MobileMe) now won't sync with iCloud without creating duplicates. How do I sync to my other devices without iCloud?

I've been using iCal for years for my business and have over 15 calendars on it (to color coordinate projects) and used to sync them with MobileMe.  Now that I've upgraded my mac and have Mountain Lion and can only use iCloud to sync Address Book, Notes etc - iCloud doesnt even acknowledge my 15+ calendars unless they are DUPLICATED.
I've turned OFF iCloud and tried to sync via iTunes telling it to sync to iphone/ipad from "Calendar on this Mac" - but it sees nothing.  My device Calendars are blank (iCloud off on them too).
    HELP!!!

I share a similar situation (usb iTunes sync with Outlook with my corporate laptop; personal calendar on icloud).
With IOS7, at first, iTunes/Windows does not propose Outlook sync anymore. I need to switch off calendar from iTunes to enable usual usb sync with Outlook. I had to sync it twice while checking "replace iphone data" to get a stable behaviour (like before) IOS7.When I try to re-enable icloud calendars, it proposes me to merge them...
I did not test merging so far...
IOS7 and iTunes 11.1 are not completely polished ;-)

  • How to make iTunes add a folder without creating duplicates?

    Hello,
I have a PC running windows 7.  I keep all my music in one folder on a NAS device.  I am getting more and more fed up with Windows Media Player (WMP) and I would like to move to iTunes.  This move, however, appears to be as painful as using WMP.  Please help if you can.  I have used iTunes before so I have an existing music and video library and I also have a number of playlists both with music and videos.  I cannot afford to start from sratch, i.e., to remove and readd everything; it would be too costly.  I have two major problems with iTunes:
    1. When I try to add files that already exist in the iTunes library iTunes happily adds these file and creates duplicates.  I cannot find a knob that would prevent iTunes from creating these duplicates and simply ignore any found files if they are already present in the library.  All such duplicates point to the same file on disk.  I am really scratching my head over this as I would think that this would be a very basic thing to do/allow, yet it does not seem to be possible.  Is it me missing something simple here or is it Apple telling me that this is how it must be...???
All I want to do is to add the top folder that contains all my music without having to deal with thousands of duplicates.  I cannot add the files one-by-one because there are too many of new files there and if I remove all the files and re-add them all my lists will likely become empty (tried it on one list and, as expected, the list got emptied once I removed the files that were in the list).  Hmm, is this asking for too much?  Please help.
    2. I do not seem to see a way to tell iTunes to monitor for new media files.  WMP allows you to specify folders to monitor.  You add a file to the folder and the file gets added to the library.  What is wrong or bad with this concept (other that it would not work if duplicates were handled)?  Why does iTunes not seem to support that?
    Thank you,
    Peter

tt2, thank you for your reply.  Let me restate your answers the way I see them.
Problem #1:  You said that "iTunes only creates duplicates if you ask it to...".  Well  my goal is not to create duplicates but to avoid them and the problem with iTunes is that it does not seem to offer an easy way to do this.   Do not get me wrong, I like iTunes but let's call black black and white white.  So the way I read your answer is: no iTunes does not support a way to add the same folder twice without creating duplicates.
Problem #2: The answer to the second question is also no, iTunes does not offer any way to monitor for new files in a folder or folders.
I wish the above were incorrect but from what I hear and from what your wrote I conclude iTunes does not support any of that.
You offered external to iTunes solutions for both problems.  Thank you for that!  I did not know about this tools.  Having said that my iTunes music files are on a NAS device (files not copied to iTunes library), my video files are on NAS but (because of the necessity to convert to iTunes supported format) they were transcoded and stored in iTunes library, my iTunes Store purchases (music) are in the iTunes library and on the NAS (backup - likely duplicates).  In short it gets messy very quickly and after reading the NAS and multi-path warnings for the DeDuper tool I am just not jumping on the idea of using it - there would be physical duplicates and I would not want any physical files to be deleted.  tt2, do you know if the DeDuper offers a mode where it would present the user with a list of duplicates and allow the user to decide which dups to remove before doing anything?  I basically would want to remove the dups from the library but without deleting any physical files.
I will have a closer look at the iTunes Folder Watch program.  Unless I am misinterpreting something I think it should do what I want to do.
So again, thank you for your answers and suggestions with the external tools.  It is just too bad that iTunes does not support what I (and many others) need natively.

Bought an iPod Classic.  First iPod, had a Zen for years, I want to transfer my music library, approximately 15,000 songs without creating an iTunes Media library.  All of the music is currently in WMA format.  As you can imagine, 15,000 songs takes up a lot of space and I do not wnat it duplicated on my harddrive in an iTunes Media Library.  What are my options?-Shawn

Change your mind, or change your device.
You can't put wma files on an iPod classic. You can't put files onto an iPod without adding them to a media library first.

  • ITunes and I seem to have created duplicate files.  How do I clean this up?

Hello experts.  I have a conundrum I'm too inexperienced to reason out.  Hoping to tap your creativity.
I have a huge iTunes library I've created over the years.  50,000+ songs.  No problem, other than my desire to whittle through it slowly and pare it down to only the 22,000 or so I want to keep as my primary library.  I haven't gone through the effort of creating multiple libraries yet, I simply delete songs or albums from the library as time permits without deleting the original file.  I figure iTunes' database will be my primary and in the long-game, I'll create a new library that holds everything, but for now I'll just keep whittling the dB structure away until I get what I want (this is a slow, multi-year project I'm undertaking -- no rush here).
    Here's my problem:
Most of these songs are physically saved in the iTunes folder on an external hard drive.  Some of the songs I added to my library from the iTunes store when the external hard drive wasn't connected to the Mac - so they are on the Mac's hard drive under the standard iTunes folder structure.  I have the "Keep iTunes Media folder organized" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" checkboxes checked.
As I said, I've deleted songs from the iTunes app, but told it to "Keep Files" so that I could listen to them in the future if I decide to re-add them.  Yesterday, I ran out of space on the startup drive of my mac, so naturally, I figured I could consolidate any files on my hard drive over to my external hard drive and delte them from the mac.
In iTunes, I went to File -> Library -> Organize Library.  I checked both boxes for "Consolidate files" and "Reorganize files in the folder..."  I let this run overnight to consolidate my library into one place.  Today, I found that the function was unable to complete due to lack of disk space on my external hard drive.  When I went to check the external hard drive, I found that iTunes had duplicated all of the songs that were on the external hard drive in their existing folders.
For example, now I have a file under the structure:  iTunes library -> Music -> Blue Oyster Cult -> Heaven Forbid -> Cold Grey Light of Dawn.mp3
And I also have a file under the structure: iTunes library -> Music -> Blue Oyster Cult -> Heaven Forbid -> Cold Grey Light of Dawn 1.mp3
So now the immediate problem...  The consolidation didn't finish, so I don't know exactly how much duplication iTunes created.  I checked my library, and sure enough, the song in the library is pointed at the duplicate file (the one with a 1 at the end).  I don't have the option to just copy the iTunes library to another external drive temporarily (or not easily, at least).  I checked out a bunch of duplicate file cleanup programs, but the ones I found (and I even purchased Gemini's dupe file finder/cleanser) don't seem to inherently choose the correct duplicate file that is linked to iTunes library dB.  I can't realistically pick and choose from the thousands of files that have been duplicated.
I decided to change the advanced preferences in iTunes to an entirely new folder on the External hard drive.  Then I could just go back into File -> Library -> Organize library and select only the "Reorganize files..." checkbox without selecting the "Consolidate files" checkbox.  I figured this would just move all the files that are in the iTunes dB to the new iTunes folder.  Ummm.... but no.  Apparently this "Reorganize files" checkbox is only available if you select "Consolidate files"...?   To be clear, "Reorganize files" is greyed out.
    So to summarize:
    1.  Why did iTunes create copies of existing files in the exact same location they were in?
    2.  What is the right (and I pray easy) way to get my library back to the right size and consolidated into one place?   I'm still dangerously low on disk space on the mac...
    <sigh>
Thanks for reading through all this!

    Mac Mini  OSX 10.8.3; iTunes 11.0.2 (26)

See this thread for background on why iTunes can end up with duplicates and how they can be systematically removed. The script there is for Windows users and the "show duplicates" menus have moved around in iTunes 11,  but the advice on clearing recently made duplicates should still hold.
As given in my older post "Reorganize library" is meant as a one time command to change the structure of a pre-iTunes 9 library into the newer layout that places music in its own subfolder of the media folder. Once used, if the option becomes available again that suggests that a file called .iTunes Preferences.plist in the media folder has been deleted or editied.

  • IPod Touch won't sync/edit song information Windows 7 64

I've experienced multiple problems after connecting my new Touch to my laptop. First, I think my computer was attempting to sync to the device, but my Touch remained unresponsive. I found that I was able to get the two to sync to each other if I disconnected my wireless mouse that was plugged into one of my usb ports while the sync was occurring. After getting past that first obstacle, I found that at some times, I would be able to sync music to my device through iTunes, but at the moment, I can't do so. After managing to place a few songs on the device, I attempted to change the information to a some tracks and change the album art, but after trying to apply these changes, I received a message saying that an unknown error had occurred (0xe8004006). I've spent the better part of two days scouring the internet to find a solution, but I've found nothing definitive. I've found suggestions that it could be something regarding the computer's usb. I've tried reinstalling iTunes, restoring my Touch (when that decides to work), updating my usb drivers, disabling usb enhanced host controller (as was suggested while I looked for a solution), and probably a few other things. But like I said, I've found nothing definitive. Any help would be appreciated.

Having the exact same issue as the OP....really frustrating. I'm also using win7 64bit. I have tried reinstalling iTunes as well as resetting my iTouch back to factory.
Whenever I try to sync my iTouch or add music I get errors such as:
    1) "Attempting to copy to the disk "My iTouch" failed. A duplicate filename was specified."
    2) "iTunes could not copy "[insert song title]" to the iPod "My iTouch" because an unknown error occured (-48)."
    3) "The iPod "My iTouch" could not be synced. A duplicate file name was specified."
    4) "The iPod "My iTouch" cannot be synced. An internal device error has occurred."
It seems as if all of these issues are related to people using 64bit win7. Any insight on how soon until this problem is fixed or alternative methods to add music to my brand new 32g iTouch would be much appreciated.

  • Saving tiff or jpg files within a single, existing psd file without creating new files

Hi, I just bought CS5 and I wonder if it is possible to save multiple images that are created within a single psd file in jpg or other image file formats without creating new psd files, but rather saving them as "embedded" within the single psd file in whih they are created. For example, one could select a portion of an image that one has created, and save just that selection as a jpg without leaving the existing psd file, and after that, one could select another portion of the same image and save it as a tiff, etc. Is this possible?
    Much thanks.

    No and Yes!
You can do much of what you want, but not exactly as you described it.  You can certainly make multiple selections and have them saved in the psd file. You can also save jpg version of those selections, but you have to do a little extra work.
Lets say, by way of example, you have an image and you want to make three different selections within that image, save each selection as a jpeg, and save those selections along with the full image as a psd file. You can do the following, which is just one way of several to proceed, with your image opened.
    1. Make selection 1, hit Ctrl+J to jump that selection to a new layer
    2. Make selection 2, hit Ctrl+J to jump that selection to a new layer
    3. Make selection 3, hit Ctrl+J to jump that selection to a new layer
    4. Alt click on the layer with selection 1. This makes only that layer visible.
    5. Click on Layer > Duplicate Layer > destination New > give it a name
    6. This creates a new (temporary document). Open it.
click Image > Trim > transparent pixels
click Save for Web & Devces, select your parameters and save your jpeg
Close and discard this temporary file.
    7. Repeat steps 4,5 & 6 for selection 2 & selection 3
    8. Save your psd file
You now have three jpegs and a psd file with all the information to create or modify the original selections

  • ITunes creating duplicate files under a hidden folder named "Volumes".

It seems my iTunes program is secretly making a duplicate file in a hidden folder called "Volumes" on my laptop hard drive. It's now maxxed out my drive and I need to both remove the "Volumes" folder and make sure it doesn't get created and happen again.
    Details:
Using a Powerbook G4 with an 80gb drive. Using iTunes 8. The iTunes library program is in the usual place on the lap top hard drive but the music library folder, where all the files get saved to, is on an external drive labeled "Media".
Clicking normally and searching around my laptop hard drive, I do not see or am able to access the folder named "Volumes". But I know it exists as I ran a scan program called jdiscreport and it clearly shows a huge folder, 45gb, named "Volumes". There are also a few old flacs in the "Volume folder also. The iTunes duplicate files are in identically named folders as the external drive: iTunes Music located within Media, located within Volumes.
When I rip a CD in iTunes (or the iTunes-LAME program I sometimes use), the files do go to the proper external folder as expected and as I've set in the iTunes preferences section. So why is iTunes also saving the same thing to this mystery "Volumes" folder on the lap top hard drive? How do I get rid of this folder without wiping my drive? How do I stop it from continuing?
Help, I have 2gb of free space left!
    Thanks, James

Hi I am having a similar issue, It all started when I tried to restore from the Time Machine and it threw a error back stating that there is no disk available. I was wondering how come and went to find out what is happening and was shocked to find out that actually my entire Macintosh HD has a duplicate copy inside the /Volumes folder. I went to the XTERM to investigate and found that the / (root) has a Users folder where all my stuffs like pictures, music, movies, documents reside and the same data or content is duplicated in the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users folder
I first thought that it was only a link, but I later found that it is not a link and it is indeed a physical copy of all my User folders inside the /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users folder and actually occupying my Hard disk space.
I am not sure how this happened or how it is duplicating itself. I am also afraid to delete the stuffs inside the /Volumes folder as it might crash my system (it is already hidden - I assume it is hidden for some purpose). Please suggest any options, how I can get rid of these duplicated data and how to avoid such duplication in the future.
    Thanks

  • IPhone 4s set to manually sync, but every time I try to put a single song on my phone it downloads my entire library. How do I sync individual songs without downloading entire iTunes library?

I recently purged my iPhone 4S of most of its music because I didn't have enough gigabytes of free space to download the latest iOS (my phone was actually completely full). That ticked me off but I didn't have time for a backup. I transferred all purchases to my library and I deleted the music from my phone.
Since then, I've been annoyed that I don't have all my music but I've been enjoying the free space that I have, so I prefer to restore songs from my library individually now, depending what I'm in the mood to hear, and I don't miss having a full phone.
However, whenever I try to manually sync music that was ripped from a CD, music I didn't download from iTunes, but is playable in my iTunes library, iTunes thinks it has to download the entire library, which I don't even have the space for, anyway. However, my iPhone seems fine wirelessly (I have Home Sharing turned on) syncing individual songs which were purchased in the iTunes store.
So whenever I try to sync a single song, or an album perhaps, which was not purchased on iTunes, I get the message "updating files on iphone" and it says it's copying all the thousands of songs in my entire library. But my settings are for manual sync only. I wind up cancelling the sync every time, because I would have to wait for it to finish copying thousands of songs before it got to the one I selected. Why on earth is it doing this?
How do I regain the ability to sync a single song at a time?
    This has been exasperating me.

While your iPhone is synching in iTunes, do the following:
    1.  Click on your iPhone's icon on the left.
    2.  Find and click on the "Tones" tab on the upper right of the iTunes display.
    3.  Choose the synch option you would like.

  • Guidance on importing 1000's of tracks without creating duplicates?

I am helping a friend consolidate his music library.
He has an existing library that I organized and is currently in great shape, no duplicates, tags are all good.
I have collated about 40,000 tracks from various sources he had into another library to work on. Once I have it cleaned up I would like to add it to his existing library, but there are thousands of duplicate albums spread through out the library.
Is there any way to import this new library into his existing library without creating a LOT of duplication?
    Thanks very much
    Henry

while dupes are easily dealt with (IMHO), you might want to take a look @ SuperSync.
the developer claims the app is able to *Compare and merge any two music libraries*, and more besides.
