Syncing for the novice user

I'm going to 'fess up here. I have never used iTunes. Our children do, but so far we have managed our music with our CD collection. But all that will change now we've got an iPad and can have our music on the move like the rest of the western world. I have a wifi network, but I've connected my iMac to the router with an ethernet cable for speed.
I've just been looking at my iPad user guide to find out about my next step into this new-fangled world where my iMac and iPad can share all they have. There's a new word 'syncing' and it appears that I can sync via iCloud or iTunes, so now I'm completely confused, and a bit nervous because it says that I shouldn't sync my contacts, calendars, bookmarks and notes with iCloud if I've synced them with iTunes. Why are there two ways of syncing? Is one better than the other? Or are they better at different things? How do I choose? What if I get it wrong? Help! I don't understand!

Syncing with iTunes will transfer content from the iTunes library on your computer to your iDevice - your iPad, iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch....
I recommend using iTunes in order to get started with learning how to do this and leave the iCloud stuff for later on when you have a better understanding of how the process works. That is just my opinion - others will feel differently than I do.
All of these kb articles will give you a basic understanding of what is involved. You should prbably start with these before you sync with the Mac.

You can connect the iPad to the Mac with the supplied cable in order to sync and use iTunes that way. You do not need to sync over WiFi if you don't want to do so. Again, I would recommend holding off on WiFi syncing as well.
If you have never synced with your computer yet and you have content already on the iPad that you downloaded, you will get a message that iTunes will erase your iPad and replace it with the contents of your iTunes library when you try to sync the first time. You need to make the iTunes library on the Mac your own syncing library before you can sync with iTunes.
Syncing contacts and calendars with iCloud is over the air WiFi syncing and it will keep all of your other iDevices in sync if you choose to do that. You add an event on the iPad calendar and it will show up on your iPhone. That is just one example of what iCloud syncing does. The same thing will happen when you add a contact on an iDevice or edit that contact.
Why don't you start by reading those articles, then come back with more specific questions ... a couple at a time....rather than a whole laundry list of "how do I ..." types of things.

    I will store user Id in "HighPriority" Roaming data. When user will install app in another computer (with the same Microsoft Account), app will get user Id from Roaming data. Then I can implement all data sync over my cloud service.
    There are 2 scenarios:
    1. User downloads and installs app in another computer, but roaming data syncs/downloads for the first time only after several minutes -
    It's bad for my app :(
    2. User downloads and installs app in another computer and roaming data syncs/downloads at the same time (then I can get user Id immediately)
    - Its great for my app :)
    Which scenario is real in practice?

    Umm no not that i remember. It just randomly started happening. I reformatted the hard drive for mac (journaled) but it was working fine since i did it until now

It doesn't give me an option to change the user ID, only a link to reset password.  I reset it, but it did not change the problem.  Can someone help me?

    It's not an ID problem, it's an ownership problem.
    When someone uses their personal Apple ID to buy and download content, the content is licensed to them and has their Apple ID engrained in it's DNA. It is an anti-piracy program. And when that personal Apple ID is used to setup a new Mac, it involves the Mac itself, the shipping OS and any pre-installed apps as well.
    It's not the correct way to handle Macs that belong to a business or an institution. And had it been handled correctly they would not now be in this predictument needing a drastic remedy.

    I think it would be easier to enable session time out settings using GPO considering you work in a domain environment..
    Having session timeouts settings you could say... hey after 15 min of inactivity disconnect the user and then after 15 min of disconnected session log him off

    I think I have to copy certain library files in the Terminal. Which files exactly? From where to where? What is the correct Terminal syntax to do so?

  • Microsoft Word Has Not Been Installed for the Current User

    Hi, everybody
    I'm just starting our attempt to put together ZfD app packages for MS Office 2007. I've tried 2 different route with poor results for each. I'm looking for guidance and suggestions and, hey really, the simple final solution. :)
    Objectives: Each app package will install locally one of the Office apps (e.g., Word) if it is not installed and then launch it, otherwise it will launch it. It gets installed locally to the C: drive using all the MS default choices, but runs from the desktop ZEN/NAL shortcut. All desktops are XP, not Vista or W7.
    Routes tried and failed...
    1) Simple app, uses distribution and run scripts to figure out if already installed, then installs using network shared drive and config.xml file for just the one app. The result ought to work -- no particular error in the package, those are fixed -- but what happens is something different each time with the MS setup.exe, and it never does complete without its own error (various and different each time). So, this appears to be completely unreliable because launching MS's setup.exe from a simple app is unpredictable and incomplete.
    2) Snapshot of a successful setup.exe and config.xml install. This ALMOST works... well it does in fact work but the snapshotted app gives an error once it finishes launching -- "Microsoft Word Has Not Been Installed for the Current User" -- and exits. From the research I've done on this message, the MS program sees the "wrong" Windows profile on the destination environment, compared to that in the snapshot, and figures it's now been installed from a bootleg copy of Office 2007.
    At this stage all I can think of is expletives. We've paid for everything, I've followed all the usual and customary steps, played by the rules, been polite (and also used the necessary computer swear words), and now I just want to insult everyone in Microsoft's marketing department for ruining everyone's life yet again. Can't we just do this, is it too much to ask!?!
    Please help me. What is really going to work for distributing and maintaining Office 2007 apps using our ZfD environment? ALL USEFUL SUGGESTIONS WELCOME. Thank you. Bless you.

    Novell did not design Microsoft's Office Install.
    I have nothing against snapshots, but it does not work great with the Office
    installs, which you yourself know since you are posting here with problems
    based on that.
    And your other method you are trying with the break out is not working well.
    We also know that from experience.
    We can tell you that the way most people install it and the way most people
    succeed doing it, is by doing it the way recommended and designed by
    Microsoft.
    ZEN does that just fine.

    It's going to be impossible for anyone in this forum to help with your issue if you don't provide any more detail about your environment and Apex installation. However, from your post it looks like the Apex database objects are missing or invalid.
    Did you follow the Apex installation guide step by step? For example, did you run apexins.sql?
    It's important to follow the documentation. The script you are running to change the admin user password should not be run until after the Apex installation is complete.

    After a system crash your Aperture Library may be corrupted, because Aperture may not have been able to finish the ongoing database transactions.
    Have you tried the Aperture Library First Aid Tools?
    Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
    Try "Repair Database", and if this does not help: "Rebuild Database"

  • Changed Ulimits values for the Oracle user and getting error -bash: ulimit: max user processes: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted when logging in.

    I'm trying to increate the ulimits for max user processes and open files for the oracle user.  I've set the values in limits.conf, /etc/profile and in oracle's environment scripts. Now when I log in as oracle I get the below errors. If I change the ulimits back to the original values errors go away but ulimits aren't changed.

    I modified the /etc/security/limits.d/90-nproc.conf and added a line for oracle and also modifed the oracle.sh file.  The ulimits are setting correctly when I su - oracle but they are still wrong when sshing in as oracle.

    We have recently implemented BI/BO infrastructure. Scope of the inital implementation was an executive dashboard based off COPA data. We have used Xelcisus for dashboard and BEx tools for query design etc.
    We would like to set up some of our key business users (analysts in respective functions) to be able to write their own queries off this COPA cube. The discussion point is whether to roll out Crystal reports for business users or have them trained on BEx tools i.e BEx query designer/analyzer.
    Any inputs to my question "Crystal Reports or BEx tools for the Business users - pros and cons", is appreciated.

    Hi Joseph,
    I am assuming that the user actually has the iProcurement responsibility assigned to them. If so, try the following solution from note 1560400.1:
    1) Logon with System Administrator responsibility
    2) Navigate to Profile > System, click on User and enter the user name
    3) Search for profile 'Applications Start Page'. Delete the value set at user level and save
    4) Retry

    we have a Citrix XenApp 7.5 Farm with Windows Server 2012 R2 Servers and multiple (english, german, italian, spanish, french...) languages installed.
    I've created a GPO with settings 'Restricts the UI languages Windows should use for the selected user' to for example 'German'.
    Now when a user logs on to the server, the UI language is in german, but when i open Control Panel\Language: There is still English (United States) with Keyboard Layout: US, German.
    It seems that the GPO is not changing all settings correctly to german.
    Does anybody know what could be wrong?

    Based on the description, the policy setting should have been applied successfully. Here, did we logged onto the server via remote desktop services? If yes, what's the keyboard layout on the computer we used to RDP to the server? Before going further,
    I assume that this can be caused by Auto detect Remote Keyboard layout feature introduced since Windows Server 2008.
