Syncing in Manual Mode with 2 PC's...

I just got a refurbished 30Gb iPod yesterday. I charged it up at work, and manually synced it and it continued to say "do not disconnect" from the start...for hours...even though I only synced maybe 40 songs. I had to disconnect when I shut my computer down. When I got home, I synced it with iTunes manually at home. Got tons of music and videos no problem.
Today when I brought it back to work and plugged it in, it says it's in restore mode. I don't want to restore b/c most of my content is on my PC at home. When I eject the iPod, it's not in restore mode, and it works fine.
Why is the second computer insisting that it needs to be restored when it works fine? Is there a way to avoid this when syncing between 2 PC's?

"and manually synced it and it continued to say "do not disconnect" from the start...for hours."
It is operating normally. If you have your iPod in "Manually manage music and videos" mode, the "Do not disconnect" will not go away until you manually eject it.
"Why is the second computer insisting that it needs to be restored"
If you just unplugged it without ejecting it properly, then that could be why it's acting that way, not sure. You may not be able to get around that. I would just make sure that your iPod is backed up on the computer in question, then just restore it as usual, then just put it back to "Manual" mode.

You cannot.  Copy everything you want form the old computer to the new one, then sync it.
it basically says you have to erase your iphone to sync to a new itunes!
Correct Iphone will sync, or manually manage, with one and only one computer/library at a time. Syncing, or manually managing, to another will indeed erase the current content.

iOS device backups are stored in your iTunes library.
Move your iTunes library to an external drive.

  • Help with manual mode of Menu Widget in Muse

I'm building a family web page in Muse and I'd like to create a menu of my secondary webpages only. Since the Menu Widget's "menu type" options are Top Level pages, All Pages (neither option will work for me), and Manual- it seems like I should be able to use "Menu Type: Manual" and simply type in the menu items I would like- which I've done. What I can't figure out is how to link those menu items I manually created to the sub pages of my website.
A bit of background on my website structure. My top Level sites are: Welcome, and then 3 separate pages for each family member- and each member page has a few secondary pages (about, photos, contact):
    Welcome
    Member 1
    about
    photos
    contact
    Member 2
    about
    photos
    contact
    Member 3
    about
    photos
    contact
My main site navigation- i.e. the menu widget for top level pages- is above my header (Light Gray). Below my header, I would like a horizontal or bar menu for ONLY the sub pages of that member: ie. About Member 1, Member 1's Photos, Contact Member 1 (Dark Gray)
I've created a menu widget in the Manual mode- I just can't seem to figure out how to link each menu option to the correct page. Currently in preview none of these manual menu items work.
    Thanks!

    Hi Scarff.
When you opt to use manual mode for the Menus, you need to manually link the pages to menu items. To achieve this , you need to have the menu item selected and then using hyperlink option as shown in below screenshots link the corresponding page to it :
    I hope this helps.

  • How do I sync a single iPhone with music on one PC and apps on a different one?

I have an iPhone 4.  I currently sync with only one Windows PC; my work PC, where I keep my apps, calendar, email, etc (my work PC does not have anything BUT apps, calendar, email, notes).  I want to add all of my music to the same iPhone, though, and it is stored on my home PC (the home PC does not have anything BUT music on it).  Therefore, I want to sync the same phone with one PC for apps, etc., and a different PC for music.
Any idea how I can do this?

You may be able to do it this way.
    On you WORK PC.
Connect your Device to Computer. Select your iPhone under "Devices" on iTunes's left Pane.
On the right pane, under the Summary tab, scroll down to make sure the box "Manually manage music and video" is checked.
Then click the APPLY button on the lower right Window.  You are done.
So anytime you connect your iPhone to your WORK PC, your iphone will be synced but without the music from work PC.
On your Home PC, before connecting your device, go to iTunes menu EDIT/PREFERENCES/DEVICES tab and make sure "Prevent iPod, iPhone, iPad from syncing automatically" box is checked, then OK.
Next connect your device, and same way on the right Pane, under the Summary tab, scroll down to make sure the box "Manually manage music and video" is checked.
Then click the APPLY button on the lower right Window.
Now you are in manual mode, to add songs to iPhone, just highlight the songs in your iTunes music library and drag them over to your iphone under "Devices" on the left Pane.

  • Syncing iPod w/ iTunes with reinstalled OS

I just reinstalled my OS (again) and now my iPod will not sync. It gives me the option of erasing my iPod or transfering my purchases. I am using the latest updates of iTunes and OS X. Some of the songs on my iPod are no longer on my computer because my computer crashed and I lost a good third of my music library (I know I should have it backed up!).
    TIA
    Rob

"I just reinstalled my OS (again) and now my iPod will not sync. It gives me the option of erasing my iPod or transfering my purchases"
Actually it will sync, that's the point of the message you are getting. However it will erase and sync so you just need to be careful connecting if your iTunes is empty or hasn't got the same content as the iPod. Connect your iPod and when you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected instructions on how you can transfer any purchased content back using iTunes can be found in this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Senuti Mac Only
    iPodRip Mac Only
    PodWorks Mac Only
    PodView Mac Only
    iPodAccess Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac & Windows
    PodUtil Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac & Windows
Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Can't set to manual mode if it's not listed in iTunes!

    Hi,
I'm struggling with this infuriating "feature" where iPods can only be synced with one computer to ensure everything being up-to-date.
I just bought a new computer and want to copy new music to my iPod shuffle (2nd gen).
I don't need auto-syncing, I just want to copy music one-by-one, and I keep getting the Erase and Sync option when I connect the iPod. I've read other threads and it sounds like manual mode is what I need, but once I hit cancel at the Erase and Sync box the iPod doesn't appear in iTunes anywhere for me to change to manual mode! How can I get iTunes to recognize the iPod so I can set it to manual?
The iPod still works fine and I can see the files in My Computer, browse the iPod_Control directory, etc. So I don't think the iPod is broken in any way.
Also I tried editing the preferences in iTunes (I'm on v8 on Windows Vista) to stop auto-syncing with iPods and iPhones (that's an option somewhere in preferences) but it didn't help.
    Any ideas!?
    Thanks,
    Raphi

An iPod shuffle cannot contain music from more than one computer at once; the manual mode referred to is present on other iPod models, but isn't available on the iPod shuffle.

  • 4S: How do I keep camera in regular mode with "Invert Colors" to on?

On an iPhone 4S w OS7.1, how do I keep the camera in regular mode (not negative image) and keep the "Invert Colors" swith to active or pink or (1).

" (1) how do I transfer the files from my PowerBook G4 to the nano? "
In disk mode the Nano will mount on the desktop like any removable dive, just drag the files you want onto it
"(2) How would I transfer them back again if I ever need to?"
Drag them back from the Nano to your computer
"(3) should I try to go back and find out if "optimizing" was completed, and finish it if it wasn't? How?
You would probably need to restore it to factory settings to start the process again
"(4) How do I keep the nano from automatically updating from my music files when I charge it"
You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box. It won't update automatically in manual mode. You can also remove the tick from the box which says "Open iTunes when this iPod is attached".

  • Games in manual mode help

I put my ipod to manual mode so that I dont' have all the songs on my computer for more space.
I'd like to keep it in manual but I can't put my game back on the ipod, cause it used to be there.
My question is. If I turn back on the auto sync for games will it turn everything to sync and whipe out my songs? Because I've had to re-add everything twice because I didn't have it all in manual. So does anyone know for sure that it won't touch the music?
    compaq presario v2000 Windows XP

No, it wil not affect your music's syncing settings.
I've tried this kind of thing myself. For example, setting "Podcasts" to "automatic-update" didn't affect my music settings, which where on manual.
In addition, I've never heard of that happening, and your settings will be safe if nothing weird happens (the computer promptly shuts down, for example..which I've never heard of with your situation either.)

  • Ipod is in manual mode... help

My iPod is in the manual mode and has music & apps that are different from the ones in my iTunes. Is there a way to change it to the automatic-syncing mode, and not lose all of the things in my iPod?

    Thank you so much.
But just in case I have to buy another one. (This one is about 4 years old). I don't need anything fancy, no video or anything. And I don't want to shuffle anything. I just want to go walking, select the tunes I want and do my thing. So if I have to buy a new one, do they still sell the IPOD nano. Or do I have to buy some fancy updated version. I know there are 1st generation, 2nd generation, ones with videos, etc. Do you have any idea how much a simple Ipod Nano would cost??
Four years ago I paid $149 for mine. One would think (with all the newer versions), that maybe my little Ipod Nano would now being sold for half the price? Do I have a shot here?
Thank you so much for all your help!!!

  • Can I sync the same ipod with a PC and a Mac?

I have been syncing with my MacBook, and now would like to sync also with my PC. Can this be done?

You can't "sync" that is automatically update an iPod from multiple libraries or computers. If you want to connect and use an iPod on more than one computer you need to change the update preference in the iPod Summary tab to "Manually manage music and videos" and click Apply.

If your iPod is formatted for Mac it won't run natively on a PC because Windows operating systems don't recognize Mac OS-formatted disks (HFS or HFS Plus formats): How to determine your iPod's disk format
Macs can read Windows drives so you could restore and reformat the iPod on your PC. iTunes will allow you to use an iPod formatted for Windows on a Mac. Apple currently only fully supports using the iPod shuffle in FAT32 format on Mac, in other words all future software updates for the iPod would have to be carried out in Windows to maintain the formatting. Alternatively there are third party programs that will allow you to use a Mac formatted iPod on Windows, this is one for instance gets good reviews. It's a commercial program so you'll have to purchase a license to use it:: XPlay 2
You can read another user's experience of using XPlay at this link: iPod on Mac and Windows
Something else to be aware of when using an iPod in manual mode is that the "Do Not Disconnect" message will remain on the display until you physically eject the device. In that case use Safely Remove Hardware icon in the Windows system tray on your desktop or check this link: Safely Disconnect IPod

  • Switching from manual mode to automatic mode

After a year of using manual mode, I'm planning to switch back to automatic mode. I've recreated my iTunes library and I've also saved a backup of the whole thing.
In the Apple knowledge base, I found an article that told me what to expect switching from automatic mode to manual mode ( http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61675 ), but I'm not sure how the switch in the other direction is going to work.
Right now I have the same songs on my iPod and iTunes, but they aren't synced. Also, I'm near my space limit on the iPod. If I switch to automatic mode, will it first delete everything on the iPod and then replace it with what's in iTunes? That's fine if it happens in that order.
I've got close to 40GB of music on the iPod, so I'm pretty nervous about making this switch. Any advice is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

You should be fine. The only reason that I think it would wipe everythingis if the song information has changed. (Like the artist name is spelled different, or the song name is now capatilized, etc). Since you are still syncing with the same library, it probably won't wipe everything. Also, it's a great idea that you have everything backed up and also on your computer!
Another option is just to restore your iPod and then resync it from iTunes, basically starting over if you like that better. For more info on that, look here... http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60983
I've seen computers wipe everything before, and then I've seen them just work with the iPod and its songs fine. As long as it is on your computer everything will be fine

  • Sync 2000 songs libary with nano

Ok. I plugged my nano in for the first time, and iTunes said theres not enough space on the iPod for all my tunes. Fine. But i dont want iTunes o create a random playlist. I want to add selected playlists and songs and podcasts to it.
    Any hints?
    *nathan

For almost all cases, I would recommend not using manual sync mode. It is more powerful and easier to manage if you choose "sync to selected playlists only"
(auto sync is brainless and is the wrong choice once your collection grows...manual mode is too much work to manage on the iPod because there is no automation)
    Why selected sync is good:
    1) you can sync against as many playlists as you want (manual and smart); playlists do not need to represent playlists, but rather "content categories" of music that you want on (for example, a 1G smart playlist of random Jazz and Country songs selected by rating and playcount, or another playlist of holiday music....now you can load/unload those songs onto your iPod through adding and removing that playlist from the sync set)
    2) the playlists are visible and managable in iTunes whether or not the iPod is connected and docked...manage them whenever you want, or if you are using smart playlists in most cases there's nothing to do but rip/buy more music and resync
    3) because the playlists are in iTunes, the can be used to sync across more than one iPod, and they can be backed up with your computer files
    4) if you want manual control, simply add an additional manual playlist(s) to the selcted sync set...now you can manage that one manually in iTunes whenever you want
    5) if you lose/sell your iPod, simply plugging in a new one and syncing against the old sync set will bring back the contents exactly
Only those people who must have two or more iTunes libraries need manual mode.....
