Syncing iPad & iPod...  device USB port cable connector question

I have an iPad & iPod 4th gen.... both syncing cables look identical..no identity markings on either. I'm not sure now which came with which device.
QUESTION: Are the syncing/charging ( know I can't charge iPad off USB port) cables given with purchase interchangable for these 2 devices?
Thanks!

Yes, the cables work the same. It is an Apple proprietary 30 pin connector.
The chargers are different. The iPhone/iPod charger is 5 watt. The iPad charger is 10 watt. But you can use the iPad charger with iPhones/iPods because it is self limiting.

You will not be able to see what version you are running until the iPad is activated. It will be in Settings>General>About >Version when you can get to the settings app.
The slider bar that you are describing sounds like the screen lock side switch and that has no bearing on setting up the iPad or connecting to WiFi.
Why don't you try rebooting your router? Unplug it for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again and see if the iPad will recognize and join the network.

  • I want to update to my iOS. Old iPad has no USB port.

I have an old iPad. All new updates for my apps require iOS 5 or greater. The fix involves hooking my iPad up and using iTunes, but there is no USB port on my iPad.

No iPad has a USB port, you use the same port on the bottom edge of the iPad as you use for charging it, and plug the other end of the cable into your computer's USB port and update it via your computer's iTunes. If you haven't synced the iPad to a computer's iTunes before then this page may be of help : https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141
Before starting the actual update, first copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11). You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes (on iTunes 11 you can enable the left-hand sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
If it's an iPad 1 then it will update to iOS 5.1.1, an iPad 2 will update to iOS 6.0.1

  • Does Ipad have a usb port?

Does the Ipad2 come with a usb port or a plug in that will allow you to support usb hook up? And does garage band for ipad allow vocal recording or just instrument?

The iPad does not have a USB port built in. There are some third-party audio devices, though, that use the Dock connector. And of course the iPad 2 has a microphone built in. If you're looking for a serious audio device, the Alesis iO Dock might be worth considering:

Lexicon's Omega is another option, one that apparently works via Apple's Camera Connector Kit:

  • Syncing ipad, ipod and iphone to a new itunes library

    Hi,
I need some guidance on how to achieve what is in my mind a relatively common problem... how do I sync my iPad, iPod (x2) and iPhone to a new computer without having to erase everything.
The scenario is as follows. I have one iTunes library on an old PC. In my family we have an iPad, 2 iPod Touch's and an iPhone, all synced with that machine and that one account. The old PC has seen better days, so I have bought a new machine. I thought it was as easy as just installing iTunes, copying the music over, downloading the apps with my apple id, and bob's your uncle.
Guess not, the first time I plug in the iPad it says that I need to erase the darn thing. You can imagine the drama in the house... one is about to lose their Smurf farm, the other is about to lose their levels in Angry birds, etc, etc. Don't worry about my contacts and emails, nobody cares about that. It's all the data that is stored with the various apps of the various members of my family that has everyone up in arms.
So my question is how can I basically make this whole lot work with my new computer? I am sure that I am not the first one buying a new computer, so I am (hopefully) sure that Apple has build this bit of logic somewhere in their software and devices. Just can't find it, and judging by the amount of blogs, articles and posts dedicated to this it appears that there are a couple of million other people that are equally unable to find this bit of functionality.
Please help... my kids and the wife are not allowing me to get rid of this old PC until this is resolved.
    Thanks.

This is copied from another thread. I think it is pretty clear. Here is the link to the thread as well. You will need to do this for each device if they all have different content on them.

    1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
    2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
    3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
    4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
    5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
    6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
If you have more questions, post back.

  • Disk write error, can't see iPod in usb port, could not format or restore

I have had them all folks. I won this schuffle in a golf tourney with closet to the hole, I wish I could take that shot back and shank one. In short the iPod new sw releases are crap. Here is what I did:
Plugged the ipod in a usb port in the back of my desktop to restore, would not restore from the high speed usb's in the frt of my Gateway, why? who knows.
I did not update the ipod when it asked me to upgrade after the restore, however, I did upgrade iTunes to version 6.0.1.3.
This config seems to be working, I can go into the ipod, delete the songs that are there and use the autofill and it has worked several times now. Prior to this I would get a disk write error, could not see the ipod in the usb, yada, yada, yada.
Apple has a serious problem with the latest sw as is evident from this forum. If I helped one person out with this post I am thankful as I am a tech kinda dude, not too much and have played with this, reinstalled the sw, faced east and chanted to Mecaa while rubbing the side of my machine, to no avail.
While I type this email message it's still working, put a pound in the till folks. This is a first kids, have not been able to do this several times in a row without some sort of error.
It's all trial and error, hope this helps some of you, let me know.

  • Help!! Ipod Video usb Port Not recognized !

Could anyone tell me what's going on with my ipod video 30g?
My friend borrowed my ipod for a file copy to his desktop, when I got it back and pluged it in the dock, the computer said: usb can't be recognized.
I am sure that the USB hub of my IBM is perfectly okay. And It is okay for the ipod to play music, photos and videos.
By the way, My friend's External Portable Hard drive also had the same problem after connecting to his desktop.
Have we got the Ipod usb port burned? Is there any way we can fix it?
    Thank You!

Your Windows PC doesn't recognize IPod:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61711
It seems that many people are still getting the 'USB Device not Recognized' problem from time to time. Unfortunately there is no easy fix.
Firstly, it's recommended that you make sure every one of your motherboard drivers are completely up-to-date, but you probably already knew that.
In XP, after a USB port isn't used for a long while the USB driver built into the OS sets the OHCI controller to suspend. When you plug a device back in, it can sometimes fail to 'wake up' properly. This problem was supposedly fixed in SP1 but there is a related registry hack that may still be able to help.
    Run regedt32.exe and navigate to;
    HKEYLOCALMachine\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Usb
Create the Usb key if it doesn't already exist. Under this key, create a new DWORD value called DisableSelectiveSuspend and give it a value of 1. Then restart the PC.
A long shot perhaps, but I recall having similar problems with a USB hub built into my Microsoft keyboard and adding this key seemed to solve it. It wouldn't hurt in trying .
Alternatively, removing all entries relating to USB in Device Manager and all associated USB drivers will force XP into refreshing the USB driver stack.
    Begin by unplugging all USB devices, then use Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to uninstall any USB driver software. Next, boot up into safe mode and go to Device Manager. Once in device manager make sure 'Show hidden devices' is checked under the View menu. Uninstall all device entries in this order;
    1. USB peripheral devices (printers etc.)
    2. HID and/or Composite USB (Human Interface Devices) You're using PS/2 input devices so you may not have this entry.
    3. USB Root Hub(s)
    4. USB Host Controller(s) (Universal or Enhanced Host Controllers)
Then boot back into Windows (not safe mode) and it should populate the Root Hubs & Host controllers again. Proceed to plug your USB devices back in, starting with your powered hub. Be aware that most USB printers and scanners need to have their drivers installed first before you plug them in.
Hopefully some of this may be of help, let me know how you get on.

  • Syncing iPad & iPod

I have been syncing an iPod for couple years with no issues. Recently added an iPad to my house. After syncing them both for a month or so, I am now seeing both iTunes and iPhoto open when I attach either the iPod or iPad. I do not remeber seeing this before.
Is there a way to prevent iPhoto from opening when I attach iPod or iPad?

You can set the  preferences in iphoto not to open when a digital camera is connected.  This will cause it not to open when any digital camera is attached.

  • Does the iPad have a USB port

Is there a USB port on ipad2?

The CCK ONLY sees photo and video files. (it works quite well with SD cards, so-so with cameras - there have been different brands that work better than others) It can also pull the files off USB flash sticks, but with limited success. I've had a 2 gig stick that does work, one that doesn't.
It seems to depend on whether or not the stick has big LED or preinstalled software like the sandisk or kingston do)

I'm having a  problem  using a MBP with MacOsX 10.6.8. My iPad2 will not sync with iTunes i keep getting "iTunes could not sync information to the iPad because a conection could not be establised to the iPad" error I tried restarting the Computer and resttting th iPad but no luck. I was able to sync before with iTunes 10 but after updating to iTunes 11 it worked once and now I get the error. I'm using the usb cable instead of the wifi but I get the same results.
The iPad shows in iTunes and charges with the USB cable also shows in iTunes with wifi.
I'm a Mac user with 17+ years of experience.

  • Ipod Mini - USB Port

I am thinking of getting an Ipod Mini but my laptop only has a USB 1 Port and I was wondering if the Ipod Mini will work with a USB 1 port as all of the literature about it only mentions using it with a USB 2.0 port. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

As Jeff said, you will be much better off if you get a good Firewire PCI card such as the Adaptec Fireconnect 4300. Firewire is normally faster and more reliable than USB (1 or 2). Note that a Firewire iPod cable is also needed if you take this route.

  • 515 sync using only a USB connection cable (no cradle)

While traveling, my 515 connects to my laptop via a non-cradle USB cable - however - the Palm program doesn't allow me to hotsync without the cradle - that I can find. The sync manager menu gives no options to sync. Is there some other way to order a sync from the palm window?
    Post relates to: Palm m515

Tap the big Hotsync icon in the middle of the window - it's actually a button!
