Syncing iphone to a new laptop

Hi there,
I recently broke my laptop and lost all my hard drive data and nothing was backed up onto an external hard drive. I'm getting new laptop tomorrow and I've noticed a lot of discussions of plugging in iPhones to new laptops and losing all data on the phone. I'm not so worried about losing music and apps because I can retrieve all my purchases from itunes however I am worried about losing my contacts, messages and photo's. Is there any way of connecting my phone without losing all of these?

Follow the steps in this user tip: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive.  In iTunes 11 go to View>Show Sidebar to follow along with this.  Also, Transfer Purchases (step 5) is now located in File>Devices.

  • Need to sync iPhone 4 to new laptop; don't want to setup as a new iPhone, want to keep current settings

My previous Dell laptop is crashing and I have purchased a new HP g4 laptop.
I own a 160GB iPod, iPhone 4, and 32gb iPad. I am less concerned about the iPod because that is just my music.
    My problem is:
How can I sync my iPhone 4 & 1st gen iPad to my new laptop without having to set it up as a new iPhone/iPad? I want to keep all my current settings as well as my groups of apps.
    Any advice?
When I setup iTunes on the new computer, I had backed up all the music and iTunes folder to my external hard drive them copied from there to the new laptop. This process did not copy over my playlists (like I was told it would). iTunes is basically setup new and does not recognize that it is just on a different computer.
I set my iPod to sync and it said "was synced with other library...erase & sync?" I said yes, because it's just music. I imported each playlist 1 by 1.
Any help is appreciated; I really do not want to have to re-setup both iPhone & iPad.
    Thanks you,
    lavoie25

Thank you for the advice. I had done the backup of the whole library folder to iTunes, but I did not know I had to hold SHIFT down when opening it. I had already synced the iPod when I posted the previous message.
I ended up trying a few steps that seemed to work out in my favor.
When the iPad & iPhone were connected to iTunes, I first right clicked and chose to transfer purchases from the device to iTunes (I was not prompted by the "already associated with a library" message). Once that finished, I right clicked on the device again and chose to Back Up the device (again, not promted). Once the back up was complete, I went to each device and rechose my music, apps, movies, tv shows, books, photos and then clicked to sync. I was prompted here that the device would be erased first. I was then prompted asking if I wanted to Merge Information - I chose to merge and the sync continued.
Once the siny was finished it was as if I had finished a sync with my old laptop; all my settings and everything were in place - did not have to re-enter passwords in apps or set up mail settings again.
This worked on both my iPad and my iPhone.

  • Syncing iPhone 4 with New Laptop

I recently bought a new laptop and would like to transfer the music from my iPhone 4 to iTunes on this new computer. How would I go about this? I've heard it's not possible to sync a device with more than one computer, but I'd really like to figure this out so that I don't have to start from scratch and re-download 2,000+ songs since I didn't purchase them through iTunes! Also, I don't know if it matters or not, but both my old and new computer are PCs. Thanks in advance!

    Hi muneeb_s1,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Sorry that you lost your data through a HD crash and had to replace the HD. One of our other users posted a tip on how to sync an iPhone after you have replaced a HD.

  • Syncing iPhone & iPad with new laptop after old one crashed.

The computer (Dell laptop) I had originally synced my iPhone & iPad with crashed. I have a Toshiba laptop that I authorized with my iTunes account but I cannot sync my devices. When plugged in I receive the message waiting for my old laptop to sync.  Any suggestions?

  • I got a new laptop (Macbook Pro) and my IPhone is synced with my previous laptop. I've recorded dozens of very long (un-emailable) Voice Memos over the last few weeks and need to get them from my IPhone onto my new laptop. How do I do this?

I got a new laptop (Macbook Pro) and my IPhone is synced with my previous laptop (which I no longer have). I've recorded dozens of very long (un-emailable) Voice Memos over the last few weeks and need to get them from my IPhone onto my new laptop.
    How do I do this?
(when I click on the Sync option I get the warning: "Are you sure you want to sync music? All existing songs and playlists on the iPhone will be replaced with songs and playlists from your iTunes library." I fear that if I click this I will lose all of my important Voice Memos as well)

Just to add to what ChrisJ4203 said.  You can sync them to your new computer using iTunes by selecting to Include Voice Memos on the Music tab of your iTunes sync settings and syncing.  However, you still need to re-establish syncing with the new computer without iTunes erasing all the iTunes media from your phone (as the warning mentioned).
If you copy your entire iTunes folder (not just your music) from your old computer to your new one, along with other non-iTunes media you may be syncing with iTunes (such as contacts, calendars and any photos synced to your phone from your old computer) by using migration assistant of following one of these methods: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527, then when you sync again with your new computer it will recognize your phone and sync as it did before.  You will still have to authorize the new computer for any Apple IDs used to purchase from the iTunes and App stores (in iTunes>Store>Authorize this computer).
After that you can sync your voice memos to your computer as mentioned earlier.
If you want to archive your voice memos before you do anything with iTunes, you can use a 3rd party program such as PhoneView or Touch Copy.

  • Hi my laptop with my itunes lubrary has crashed so i got a new one but i dont want to sync my iphone to the new laptop incase i lose all my songs on my iphone. how do i sync to a new one without losing everything

hi my laptop with my itunes lubrary has crashed so i got a new one but i dont want to sync my iphone to the new laptop incase i lose all my songs on my iphone. how do i sync to a new one without losing everything

The right way is to restore the backup that you kept of your old computer onto your new one. If it is too late for that before you do anything set up a backup process for the new one so when it crashes (note I said "when", not "if") you won't be faced with this problem again.
In lieu of that the apps already mentioned will help you get content off the phone if it was not purchased from iTunes. But it it WAS purchased from iTunes just connect the phone to your new computer, Authorize iTunes on the new computer and choose "Transfer Purchases" from the iTunes file menu.

  • I have sync'ed a folder of photos from my other laptop to my iphone 4, i couldnt copy it from the iphone to my new laptop, even when i go through as normal internal storage the folder doesnt appears

i have sync'ed a folder of photos from my other laptop to my iphone 4, i couldnt copy it from the iphone to my new laptop, even when i go through as normal internal storage the folder doesnt appears

Correct. The iphone is not a storage/backup device.  The photo sync is one way -  computer to iphone.
You need to copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

There are multiple reasons that lead to issue. You should read the troubleshooting guide to get the right solution to solve the issue: iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch not recognized in iTunes for Windows - Apple Support

how to deactivate from old laptop so that i can sync my iphone4 to new laptop?

Copy your entire iTunes folder from your old computer to your new one using one of the methods outlined here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527, along with any synced non-iTunes data such as contacts, calendars and photos synced from your computer to your phone.

  • My Laptop was stolen. How can I get my photos from my iphone onto my new laptop that are in albums, not the camera roll?

I have photos in albums that are stored on my iphone. My laptop that I had everything backed up on was stolen. I would like to be able to re-sync my iphone with my new laptop (Windows 8) without losing the photos that are in my albums. I'd prefer not to have to individually email them all to myself and I have everything off the camera roll already. I would appreciate any and all help. Thanks.

Also, ALL of the photos were taken by my iphone.

  • Syncing iphone on a new computer

My hdd on an old computer crashed and is not recoverable. All my iPhone syncing was done on that laptop and all info is lost. Now I want to sync ALL my info (contacts, photos, calendar, apps, everything) on a new laptop (vista). Every time I try to sync with the new laptop I get a message saying "your laptop is already synced with iTunes on another computer, syncing to this computer will erase everything on your iPhone." Murphy's law says anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Now that I cannot sync my iPhone, I am sure something will go wrong and I will lose everything. Please suggest a way to sync ALL my info from my iPhone to the new laptop. Thanks, FS

By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software:
    http://www.wideanglesoftware.com/touchcopy/index.php
Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
    1. Disable auto sync when an ipod/iphone is connected under preferences in itunes, which in windows is under the edit menu.
    2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in whatever programs you use for that purpose on your computer. The entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
    3. Connect your phone, itunes running, do not sync at this point.
    4. Store>Authorize this computer.
    5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).
    6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
    7. Right click again and select backup.
    8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
    9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
That's as good as it gets without a backup of your itunes library.
