Syncing iPhone to Laptop (previously synced to Desktop)

Hi All.
I've gotten some great technical assistance here and am hoping this is on-topic enough to get some more assistance for this newbie.
I have a Desktop (MB) and a Laptop (MBP). I also have an iPhone.
I have been organizing my photos (previously they came from a PC) on my Desktop and am now traveling with this iPhoto Library stored on my external drive. I access this library from my Laptop via iPhoto and am organizing and uploading new photos to the database. My intention is to overwrite the old Library on my Desktop when I get home with the new one on the external (I think this is OK).
The issue I am hoping to address is that I have a Music Library that I am organizing in the same way on the Laptop. It exists on the Desktop but I now have time to organize it on the laptop. Again the intention is to overwrite the old Library with the new Library when I get home.
Is there a way to now sync my iPhone with the Laptop whereas it has previously been synced to the Desktop? Since I now have the correct library on the laptop this information will be the current info. however, will I lose all my Apps since this phone was previously synced to the desktop? Is there any way around this? Is there any other information I would lose?
Also, my impression is that Photos and MobileMe are NOT AT ALL affected by which computer I sync to the IPhone is that correct?
Thanks for any help as I get up to speed.

Hi Terence.
I was hoping that someone that was dealing with multiple libraries might also have experience with this. However, upon reflection you are probably right.
Is it possible to ask if there are any issues related to iPhoto with this issue?
For instance my understanding is that I can set a folder in iPhoto to d/l to the iPhone and have this as my iPhoto gallery. Is there a way to get some understanding as to how this would function in a case such as this?
For instance, if I sync my phone to the laptop - and I am accessing my iPhoto library off an external hd, does that mean that I won't be able to sync these photos to the iPhone (since it is accessing the data from an external). Or I suppose I would just have to have the external connected when I sync...
Also, is it correct to think that it doesn't matter a lick which computer my phone is synced to when uploading photos? I mean, I can just "hook up" the library I am accessing off my hd and upload the photos to the library, yes?
Then when I get back home I can overwrite the library on the desktop with the laptop?
Are there any issues here?
Thanks.

  • "An iPhone has been previously synced with this computer" error on sync

I recently resurrected an old original iPhone to use as an iPod touch (no phone contract) and started syncing it to my home Mac Mini, which is where I sync nearly all of my iPhone 3G data from. I can't honestly say which was the last iPhone to successfully sync, but I just docked my iPhone 3G for the first time in a few weeks and got an error, "An iPhone has been previously synced with this computer". It's only allowing me to either set it up as a new phone, or to restore from either my 2G or 3G iPhone backup.
I don't want to restore; I've added a load of apps, notes, photos, etc since the last archive on that Mac Mini.
NOTE: This home Mac Mini syncs all the iPod content to my 3G. My MacBook Pro syncs the Pictures to the 3G. And all calendar/contact data is synced OTA (over the air).
(I have been regularly syncing/backing up to my MacBook Pro while I've been on the road. So I do have a valid archive on that system.)
I don't understand why I'm getting this error. It's almost as if I can't sync multiple iPhones to the same computer, but AFAIK that's not correct.
I suppose I could move an archive from the MBP over to the Mini and restore from a valid archive, but that seems obtuse.
What would cause this error? I can't update my music/tv/podcasts on here until I get this sorted out… bugger!
    thanks

Thank you for your response will2b but I am looking for a solution for the problem that I cannot sync the same phone with the same computer I have been for a couple of months now. It shouldn't matter that I did not sync my phone for a couple of weeks. I should still be able to sync the same phone to the same computer. This is obviously some kind of software glitch and I am looking for a solution.
    some advice from blacksheepia:
I had been having issues with having good reception in a suburb within close proximity to Los Angeles. Called ATT and they were able to synchronize my phone while I am at home to a closer cell site and that has improved things a great deal. Also I was told that you should turn the phone off at a minimum of once a week and if possible more times to reset it and give it time to rest and cool off. The other thing I have discovered may be the actual way that the phone is constructed. Today I was using it at home in the same room and noticed the bars go down and come up when I changed how I held it. I thought their was no possible way that it could be that simple, but after changing the way I held it 5 times alternating from gripping my whole hand around the back with my palm and just finger gripping from the sides and making sure I was not blocking the back of the phone, well as much as possible, the results were that I had 4 to 5 bars of reception. Now this may seem crazy, but there is a possibility that this could be the cause of bad reception if the antenna is in the back shell of the phone and by blocking it with your palm you could interfere with the reception. Crazy I know, but I have heard of much crazier things with new phones and technology.

  • An iPhone has been previously synced with this computer

When I start iTunes and select my iPhone device, I get the message: "An iPhone has been previously synced with this computer". It's the same phone that I have used on the same computer since I bought it. ITunes is giving me two options, neither of which is acceptable. One is to erase the whole thing and set up the phone as new and the other is to restore the phone from a backup. I don't want to lose all of the data I have acquired since the last backup. Please help. Using Mac Book Air iTunes 10.6.3.

  • I installed Firefox (10) sync on my laptop instead of my desktop. How do I uninstall, so I may install on my main computer? In tools the only sync option is "sync now."

    Question
I installed Firefox (10) sync on my laptop instead of my desktop. How do I uninstall, so I may install on my main computer? In tools the only sync option is "sync now."

It won't let me install it on the other computer as a new account, saying that my address is already in use (on the small one) -- that is the crux of the problem.
When I try to set it up as a not-new account (clicking that I already have an account), there are different problems.
Am I right in assuming it needs to be installed on the main computer first (so that the smaller one doesn't wipe out the (more extensive) stuff on the main computer as they sync? I would love to be able to uninstall it on the small one, and start from the beginning on the big one.

  • IPhone-to-Laptop iCal syncing

I know that items added to my iCal on my laptop will automatically migrate to my iPhone.  Can I set things up so that it will also go the other direction (iPhone iCal -> laptop iCal)?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
First check that all your settings are correct, that calendar syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the calendars you are using are in your 'iCloud' account and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud account (you can do this by clicking/tapping the calendar button in the top left corner of the application ), non iCloud calendars will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your calendars are in the iCloud account, you might try unchecking calendar syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling calendar syncing settings.

  • After syncing iphone 4s all previous music gone

Hi - I recently uploaded some CDs to my itunes library and the synced my iphone 4s. Now, all the music that WAS in my library is gone from my computer and from my iphone. I searched my PC - none of them are there, not in the recycle bin either. And they are not in the cloud either. In fact there is not even a music folder in my icloud. This represent ALL of the music I had on my library since about 2007.
I have exhausted every search for help in Apple support and otherwise. Please help.
Note: I am not a novice with computers, but I admit that I find iTunes confusing.
Note: I also have an original apple TV, which still has most of the original music.
    Thank you.

Me too.  If I sync again, and during the sync, drag and drop an App over to the right, i.e. on the phone, it will appear on the phone correctly.  This only works 1 at  a time.  I have 16 apps in "Waiting" mode.
    Anyone?

  • Trouble syncing iPhone 4s with iTunes (sync won't start)

When I plug my iPhone 4s into my computer, both my computer and iTunes recognize it and nothing seems out of the ordinary until I try and sync the phone with iTunes. After pushing the sync button, the top of itunes says "Syncing iPhone (step 1 of 7)", and under that "waiting for sync to start", but after a minute or so a pop up box appears that says the sync could not be completed because it failed to start. I've tried all my USB ports, multiple cables, both my phone and itunes are completely up to date. Any idea what could cause this problem?

Is 10.6.6 the current 10.6 version?

  • How can I back up my contacts and apps to Windows 7 if my iPhone has been previously sync'd to a Mac?

I have always used my iBook G4 to sync and backup my iPhone 3GS, until the screen went wrong on my Mac.
I managed to salvage the songs off the mac by turning it into a mass storage device (holding T on startup), and I'm currnetly using a Windows 7 laptop whilst saving up for a new Mac.
I'm trying to back up all my contacts and apps to iTunes but as it was initially sync'd to a mac, it is saying that all my apps, contacts etc etc will be lost!
Is there any way to download my apps and contacts (all contents of my iPhone really) to iTunes on Windows if it was originally run via a Mac?
I'm due for an upgrade to the iPhone 4 on Friday and I'd like to get all my stuff backed up before then please!
    Can anyone help?

Before you connect to a new PC, make sure that autosync is disabled in Edit/Preferences/Devices, otherwise your phone will be wiped during the following sync.
    Then back up manually:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to the new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your phone without syncing.
Transfer the purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the phone for the first time.

  • I started sync on my laptop first, then on desktop, but want to reverse that so the info on my desktop goes to the laptop. How do I change this?

I mistakenly began by setting up a sync account with my laptop. When I connected my desktop, the tabs etc from my laptop added to those on my desktop, but not vice versa. I'd like my desktop tabs to add to the laptop... how can I make this happen?
Is the only way to set up a new account starting with my desktop and with a different e-mail address etc? If so, perhaps the system should be tweaked to make such changes easier?

    Thanks Ibai!
The article you linked did not help... I can see the screen with the code in the boxes on my laptop, and the same screen with a different code in the boxes on the other computer, but I can't get an empty code box in either computer. Both offer me a code to transfer to the other, but neither will empty... so I cannot replace the code on either computer with the code from the other .
However... your second suggestion, that I pretend I don't have the other device with me, enter my account, password and sync key... then it all synced to the first computer. It seems an unwieldy/non-intuitive route to follow. Did I do something incorrect the first time?
But now... the next puzzle... the screen warns me... "Be sure to leave Firefox Sync connected so your data will automatically sync every day." but it doesn't suggest how I should leave it connected. As far as I know I didn't switch it off before, and I certainly don't know how to disconnect it.

  • HT1386 how to deactivate to sync from old laptop and sync my iphone 4 to new laptop?

how to deactivate from old laptop so that i can sync my iphone4 to new laptop?

Copy your entire iTunes folder from your old computer to your new one using one of the methods outlined here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527, along with any synced non-iTunes data such as contacts, calendars and photos synced from your computer to your phone.

  • Sync iphone G3 will not sync calendar

Have used iphone G3 long time but now iTunes on Mountain Lion goes through motions of Sync but Calendar and Contact changes are NOT realy synced. Items I change do not sync between Macbook and iphone.   Wonder if iCloud has sabatoged ability to sync since iPhone G3 does not have Cloud???

If new events added to her iPhone do not appear on her calendar on icloud.com, on her phone go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars>Default Calendar and be sure she has selected an iCloud calendar as your default and not something else like On My iPhone, a Google calendar, etc.  If she hasn't, make this change, then add a new event and see if it appears on her calendar on icloud.com now.
If her settings are correct and new events still aren't appearing on icloud.com, add any missing calendar events from her phone to her calendar on icloud.com.  Once her calendar on icloud.com is up to date, go to Settings>iCloud, turn Calendars to Off, choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted (they will still be in iCloud), then after a minute or so, turn Calendars back to On.  Then add a new event on her phone and see if it appears on her calendar on icloud.com (and her Macs) now.

  • 'iPhone previously synced with computer' error when I connect to itunes

I have a v1 iphone and yesterday morning upgraded to 2.01. That seemed to go just fine and I used it all day.
Last night the batter ran out and upon plugging it into the charger it seems as if the phone has been de-activated. I then connected to iTunes and received the message saying "An iPHone has been previously synched with this computer" and I chose to restore from my backup which seemed to work fine. I could use the phone no problem.
This morning I connected it to iTunes to move some music over and it gave me same "An iPhone has been previously..." message as before. So I'm restoring again, but I'm wondering what is up and if anyone else is experiencing similar issues

I also have been experiencing this issue since yesterday when I tried to upgrade to 2.0.1
Half way through installing the firmware update, my phone went nuts and kept disconnecting and reconnecting (hardware growler notifications) before throwing up an error (which I unhelpfully cannot recall now, but which I think was of the 0x800 'unknown error' variety). I cancelled the procedure and ejected the phone, before physically disconnecting it. Upon reconnecting, I was greeted with the same message as the original poster.
I went through the backup restore procedure successfully, but now every time I reconnect the phone to my computer it comes up with the same screen:
*An iPhone has been previously synced with this computer.*
*1. Set up as a new iPhone.*
    *2. Restore from backup.*
I've been through the backup option at least three times now (takes an age) and each time I reconnect the phone I get the same message. I've rebooted my Mac, rebooted the iPhone, all to no avail. I'm very hesitant to try option 1 above, which I feel may solve the issue but I'll lose all the phone data in the process. I'm aware I could write it all down and re-input it, and some things, like my contacts, can just be re-synced from my Mac address book, but there's plenty of other stuff on there that is unique to the phone that I would not be able to get back on it easily.
If anyone has any insight on this matter it would be gratefully appreciated...
For the record I'm running an aluminium 20" iMac, Leopard 10.5.4 with an iPhone 3G.
