Syncing iPod in Vista

I wish Apple would clearly address this issue on their support page. From what is written there, it seems as though iTunes IS compatible w/ Vista (aside from a few 'compatibility issues'). I've called Customer Support on several occasions and have been told, finally, that iTunes is NOT COMPATIBLE with Windows Vista. If this is the case, then please just say this on your support page and make it very clear that syncing iPod on a Vista-based machine is just not possible yet.
And is it just me, or is this issue taking Apple WAY too long to get resolved?? I would really love to get back to using (and updating, specifically) my iPod!
iPod w/ Video 30gb   Other OS

And its worse than that ... it seems its something to do with the memory management in the iTunes program and not the USB connection as I first suspected. Here was my issue... I could not sync more than about 1 gb of data to my Video iPod. Now when my big back log of podcasts is downloaded ... BSOD with the message KERNELSTACK_INPAGEERROR.

  • Syncing Ipod on Vista Buisness N

I have Vista Buisness Edition N. Not the beta, the full version. I tried to update my ipod, but (while I was installing itunes) it told me that the ipod helper could not run. Now I can't update my ipod. It reads it, but I get a messege saying that I can't update it (-50 error). I checked and ipod helper is not running and I cannot tell it to run. Also I can't even reset my ipod. Tried everything from the 5 r's to reinstalling.

I have had a similar issue where iTunes will get part way through updating one of my iPods and then say that I do not have permission to my Music folder. If I keep trying to run the sync, I get the same message about not being able to update and the -50 error.
I know that Vista was just released, but it have been in preview for a year now. Apple does not even have a statement about when it will be supported. There was an article posted last week, but it was taken down and they have not posted any additional information on it since.
I keep checking back to see if they will have something posted on supporting Vista, but nothing...

  • Cannot sync ipod to vista

    I am having 3 problems -
    1. my ipod does not show as a device in itunes
    2. the synch ipod selection in file is greyed out
    3. the computer will not recognize my USB cable.
I have tried reloading 7.3, buying new USB cables, using different ports and also the reloading in the computer mgt USB section - it reads my USB driver as an unknown device and when I download it tells me it is all current. Then if I plug it back in, I get the 'doesn't recognize driver message'
Help - I'm not a techie and I've tried researching everything but can't figure this one out!

  • Ipod with Vista - Will not sync

    Hello!
I am having trouble with my Ipod syncing with my computer. Before I got this new computer (with Vista) I didn't have a problem and now I don't know what is going on. Basically, when I plug the USB cable in and plug the Ipod to it the computer will not bring up Itunes to sync. Itunes is not recognizing that the Ipod is plugged in. When I plug the USB in, the computer tones, signaling that something has been plugged in. So the computer IS recognizing that something is attached...it's just that Itunes doesn't. When I open Itunes and go to File the option to Sync Ipod is not available.
    Any help???? TIA!!

I was able to figure out this problem.
That error message regarding access privileges has nothing to do with what the actual problem is. I've reported this to Apple Support and hopefully, they will change the error message to something more meaningful.
In my case, I originally had a Dell laptop running Windows XP. It crashed, but I was able to salvage the hard drive. I bought this Sony with Windows Vista on it and recovered my iTunes Music folder and restored iTunes with all my music as it looked originally on the Dell running XP.
Even though my playlist was setup correctly, the problem turned out to be that I had stored some of my files in the My Music folder on my Dell. The path to that in Windows XP is \Documents and Settings\User\My Music. In Vista, Documents and Settings has been changed to just Users.
So, what this turned out to be was that it had nothing to do with write privileges on the iPod, it's that iTunes simply couldn't find some of the music listed in my Playlist.
To resolve it, I deleted the entries in the Playlist that were pointing to Documents and Settings and added them again from the new music folder in Vista.
Since doing this, I can now sync my iPod with no issues whatsoever.
I hope this helps anyone else having this problem.

  • ITunes/iPod stuck at "Syncing iPod Do not disconnect" using Vista

I've moved about 40GB onto my 160GB ipod classic without incident. After my latest manual transfer of mp3 files iTunes and my iPod are stuck at "Syncing iPod Do not disconnect". I have installed the recommended windows Vista patch that allegedly fixes the Vista corrupting the iPOD at eject.
I Never had a problem with my windows xp and ipod 80GB Gen 5.5.
I'm pretty disappointed with apple's engineering. I think I'll go back to my Archos 605 160GB (much more reliable!) and return the iPOD to the store.
It's taken days to move 40GB onto my ipod I really don't want to do a total wipe of the ipod using the factory setting restore. Anything else I can try?

As a follow up. I reset the ipod. I plugged the ipod classic 160GB into a computer running windows XP and got the same result: stuck at "Syncing iPod Do not disconnect" and iTunes hung. My conclusion is that the bug is in the ipod and not Vista.
I agree with the poster that concluded that Apple released this ipod too early with inadequate testing.
Anyone else notice that each generation of ipod comes packaged with less extras?!
ex. with gen 5.5 you got a nice sleeve and a hard case with belt clip, with gen 6.0 you got neither. Seems to me Apple's policy has become: "we've got loyal customers, time to screw 'em over"

Try removing and then reinstalling the Apple software using these instructions.
Removing and reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows Vista or Windows 7
The above containes a link for XP. Also. make sure you install the correct Apple software, It comes in 32 and 64 bit and you need the one that is the same as the computer OS

  • TS4062 Cant sync Ipod touch. Itunes 11 cant determine apps on ipod.

Recently upgraded to Itunes 11 and tried to sync computer (windows vista) with my ipod touch. Started to sync then stopped with meassage"apps installed on ipod could not be determined".  Would not let me drag and drop apps into home screen either, showed zero apps.  I have 9 working apps on my touch. Can anyone help? Thanks.

You need to buy OS 10.5 or later. If you have an Intel Mac, you can buy 10.6. If you have a PPC Mac, you can find copies of 10.5 for sale on Ebay and Amazon.

When syncing iPod touch to MacBook, I have selected to sync only events newer than 360 days. Yet I get message that sync will change 8000 events on "this computer"  most of which are years old and many are recurring events.  I'm afraid to proceed with sync.

Having the same problem here. As a first time mac user, Apple has certainly made a bad first impression.
For me, the issue seems to occur when transferring files between computers that are connected to the same access point (when transferring files from wired computers on the network there is no issue). My vista laptop and every laptop I have tried has worked perfectly fine with this access point so I am 100% convinced it is the mac. Basically when I copy the files, after about 100mb, I am unable to access anything on the local network or internet until I restart Airport. The weird thing is that even though I am unable to access anything, the airport utility says it is connected. I might also note that the wireless signal strength is full.
If I can't get this figured out in a few days, this computer is going back to the store where it came from and I will officially label myself anti-mac. This type of issue is just unacceptable for something so main stream.

  • Can't sync iPod on Windows "Can't find file" message

This is my umpteenth problem with iTunes since getting Vista. Can't resist sharing that.
Problem: I sync my iPod (bought it two years ago; audio and video, it downloads some of my music, shows the progress on the "bar", then it gets stuck on one song, will sit there for five minutes trying to download and then gives me the error message "Can't sync iPod. Can't find the necessary file" or words to that effect. I try ejecting my iPod and while my iTunes goes back to normal, my I have to wait for my iPod to run out of power before it returns to normal.
I uninstalled iTunes and downloaded it again and got the same result. However, the newly downloaded iTunes still kept my old play lists so maybe it was not completely downloaded even though it disappeared from my computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

. when i plugged my ipod shuffle g1 in a few days ago itunes said the i had to restore my ipod. i did not want to but i had no choice cauz it already deleted my songs. after 5 trys it said "cant restore ipod"ipod". unknown error occurred (1418))(itunes did it by it self, i just put it in one very fateful afternoon. i spent 5 hrs on the computer and i still cant fix it) well i went to this web site to see if they could help me. i found something. it was a program for my ipod but by the time i downloaded it, it was too late. after a while plugging in my ipod "my computer" no longer reconized it as removable disk. a pop up comes up and says this device malfunctioned then my ipod disappears off the face of the earth. i would send it to the apple store but my warranty expired. bummer what should i do?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!umm i dont think anything can work towards our problem

  • Still unable to sync ipod in vista32

after installing newest update 7.2 I still can not sync my ipod in vista. I have have solved that problem by purchasing anapod. I can now sync my ipod but really wish that apple would solve this problem or atleast direct me to a work around.
      Windows Vista

    Pygar:
I have the same problem, I have a Click Wheel Ipod (4th Gen) and ever since I upgraded to Windows Vista I have not been able to properly sync it, it just stops at 150+ (no error message, sync is supposed to be complete) songs and I actually have 3400+ songs. However my 2nd Gen Ipod Shuffle works flawlessly.
Anybody else having this problem that was able to resolve it?

  • Synced once with Vista and now is apparently hosed

I installed iTunes on my new Vista PC and loaded all my music. I then synced my 60 GB iPod and it worked fine. Now when I connect my iPod iTunes tells me my iPod needs to be restored. So then I go through the steps and it tells me my iPod needs be restored.
I've tried different USB ports but I continue to get the "needs to be restored" message.
    HELP

Usually when an app. hangs, it means that the database is corrupted but if it syncs ok on Vista it may indicate that the database on the XP may be corrupted. Can you open Palm desktop on the XP PC with no problem?
If you sync with Vista with no problem, try changing the conduits on the XP PC to handheld overwrites desktop and then sync to see if it hangs on calendar.

  • ITunes Freezes While Syncing iPod!

    Hello,
I've seen tons of unanswered "itunes freezes" posts, but I'm hoping to get lucky. Before I even upgraded iTunes, a freezing problem started happening.
Anytime I copy some mp3's to my ipod, I see it add them all and then it goes into the "Syncing iPod - Please Wait" message, and iTunes freezes every single time. In order to use iTunes again, I have to completely CtrlAltDel and close iTunes then disconnect and reconnect my iPod. After I'll be able to reopen iTunes and use it until I have to sync my iPod again.
I'm using an iPod classic (160GB) and Windows Vista.
I've already tried completely uninstalling iTunes and all other programs by Apple Inc. and reinstalling iTunes and the problem still happens. I even upgraded to the latest version of iTunes and the problem still occurs.
I've tried changing the drive letter of my iPod that doesn't help either.
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks so much!

OK, I read your first message again and can't seem to see where you wrote you didn't have all the music on your PC, but never mind, at least we got that straight before you went and restored your iPod!
I'm afraid you've run into the situation where it is risky to only have a copy of your music on the ipod, because everyone needs to restore their ipod sooner or later....that being said, you can get a 3rd-party utility to copy your music off your ipod onto an external hard drive, perhaps?
Or else try an ipod reset (which will NOT erase the music on your iPod), but I don't think that is going to help your syncing woes.

  • Do you need Bonjour to wirelessly sync iPod?

I accidentally uninstalled Bonjour.  Right after I added some songs from my PC to my itunes library and wanted to sync my Touch 4G with iCloud to put the songs on.  But the iPod wont find my laptop and iTunes usually has my device appear whenever its asleep and I wake it up.  The wifi-sync is turned on.  Everything to allow it to synce with iCloud is turned on...Any Help?

Do you need Bonjour to wirelessly sync iPod?
Yes, and if you deleted it you may have to uninstall iTunes and reinstall it again. This will not delete your iTunes library.
To see if Bonjour is installed and enabled:
Start > My Computer (XP) (or "Computer" if you're using Windows Vista / 7) right click and select Manage.
The Computer Management window will open
In the left column select "Services and Applications"
    You should see the following
In the Services pane select Bonjour Service, right click and select Properties. Make sure the "path to executable" and "startup type" are selected as shown:
If you make any changes click OK.
