Syncing Issue after changing Hard Drive

Hi, I believe people have been asking this same question couple times, but I couldn't really see anything that will reallyl answer my question.
So here it is.
I have replaced my laptop's hard drive which I have my iPhone sycned to.
I know I can copy everything under "iTunes" folder in "Program Files" folder, and some copule more under "Users"
Though that way I think it'll keep everything. (which is not really what I wanted)
I would like to keep only the Apps, so that way I can reset the way I organized my songs and videos.
So I was wondering, if I should copy everything under those folders, then delete all the songs.
Or is it possible to just get the Apps files back.
My problem is more concerned with that I don't want the Apps to be recynced to my iPhone as I believe that way I will probably lose my savings and settings in the game after re-syncing as a new one. (or will it?)
I hope I have made my questions cleared enough to answer.
Thanks.

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your phone. Only if you back up manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone  and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your device without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPhone for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

I am having sporadic issues after new hard drive install and recovery using Time Machine. The same sluggish response, start up screen pixelating...If I reinstall Lion will it wipe out other applications? My HD was formatted and partitioned correctly, I have a late 2009 iMac.

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Drive Partition causing issues after new hard drive and recovery disks installed

I have an HP Pavilion Media Center PC m7640n running Windows XP Media Center Edition.
My hard drive failed and I had a computer guy install a 1 TB Hard drive as well as additional memory.  I purchased the recovery disks and he installed everything for me.  I have two issues:
    1.  After updating to XP Service Pack 3 and all other Windows recommended upgrades the computer deleted all my drivers and would not "plug and play" install anything.  I had the computer guy back to fix this--he did get all my drivers to work, but when I plug in anything new for the first time (such as my iPad), I have to go into the device manager and manually update the drivers.  The computer doesn't recognize it and automatically prompt me to install it.
    2.  The hard drive partition defaulted to my C drive being very small and my D drive being large.  Since software usually defaults to the C drive for installation, I quickly ran out of space.  I had the computer guy back and he programmed something so that everything now defaults to the D drive.  Unfortunately all my program files (including Microsoft Office) are still on my C drive including everything I put on my desktop.  My C drive is now full.
Here is an example:  iTunes shows that it is defaulting to the D drive for anything I load into it.  Yet I tried to download the new operating system for my iPad and it said my hard drive was full.  When I did a file search to see what files had changed in the last week, it shows iTunes on my C drive (and my D drive).  Yet all the files that were "changed" due to my upgrade were defaulting to the C drive, even though in the setting in iTunes it shows it should be saving to the D drive.
    D:\Documents and Settings\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media
Is there an easy way to fix these issues?  I've already spent more than I anticipated when I chose to rebuild this computer vs buying a new one.  Now I'm regretting the decision and I'd like to try and fix this myself and not pay my computer guy to come back at $90/hour.
    Thanks!

Here are the original specs of your computer. The specs state that the original hard drive was 320GB. You have since replaced the factory drive with a 1TB (1000GB) hard drive. The HP recovery routine seems to have issues with hard drives that deviate from the original size. The partition issues you are experiencing may be a result of this. As for the rest of your issues, it sounds like the SP3 install went bad.
If I were you, I would consider reinstalling the OS using your recovery discs by doing a complete "destructive" reinstall/recovery. Afterward, I would post the size of both the c: and d: partitions... and go from there.

  • HELP:  Sync Issues with External Hard Drive

Since I have moved all my music to an external hard drive I am having issues syncing. My Next Gen Ipod syncs, but never gets rid of the syncing notification. I have to disconnect it and restart it. Also, when it syncs it leaves two copies of the songs on my library, one copy has the explanation mark on it. Can anyone help me stop this?

I'd say bad power supply (if it has an external power supply).
Two external enclosures have done that to me already (but one is almost certain to do it while the other just started to do it recently), if the HD I have in the enclosure is a bit older (and noisier) I can even hear the HD spin down a little and spin up again, of course that whatever I was doing explodes in the process.
Mind you that the HD is confirmed to be working properly by connecting it inside a desktop pc.
I have couple other power adapters I can try. I got the same enclosure for my dad. I have a brick for a LaCie drive too. (I bought the lacie drive a year ago, but the power supply buzzed loudly. I put in a support request, but ended up returning the drive, and they sent me a new power after that)

  • Folders locked in Time Machine after changing hard drive

    2008 iMac running Lion 10.7.5
I have had a larger hard drive installed on my iMac and all the data migrated to the new drive.
Time Machine has done a complete new backup but I can't access any of the older backups on Time Machine from the old hard drive.
The error I get trying to open any folder in TM prior to today is (Movies is an example)
The folder “Movies” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.
My local Apple expert states that - "The backups get protected using the Hardware UUID of the hard drive. In your case, your old backups are protected using the UUID from the old hard drive. OS X is supposed to 'adopt' the old backup once it confirms that the data is the same as what is on the new drive. However, it doesn't always work."
I have since found a workaround on techsurvivors - by changing the permissions in Finder/Get Info on the Time Machine Drive ie
Open Time Machine drive in Finder
Do get info on any locked folder for specific backup date.
Unlock it but do not close the Get Info window.
Click on the black plus sign in the lower left corner of the Get Info window.
Click on the administrators or your account if it is bolded, then the Select blue button.
Click on the little arrows to select "Read and Write" for the account.
After doing this on one folder - Movies - for one backup ie June 11 2013 I was able to restore some movie files using Time Machine as normal.
I don't really want to have to repeat this for all the locked folders for every backup.
Is there an easier way to change the protection of the backups on the Time Machine drive? Or am I stuck with this workaround.
    Thanks

  • Speaker problem after changing hard drive

    Hi,
Yesterday I changed my powerbook's hard drive to a nice big 250Gb one and proceded to install Leopard on it. However, ever since I've changed the hard drive my speakers have been making a horrible loud noise. When I plug headphones in to the jack the noise from the speakers stops and I get perfect sound through my headphones. The noise starts as soon as I turn the powerbook on but stops for a short period during the boot sequence.
    Any ideas ?
PS: I'm not 100% sure I put the screws back in the right place but I had no screws left after putting the powerbook back together.

    Bienvenue!
First, try resetting your PMU: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431
If that doesn't do it, recommend you reopen the powerbook to ensure that all cables are securely attached.

  • Experiencing strange performance issues after a hard drive failure - Help!

I bought my mid-2012 i5 Macbook Pro in December of 2012. I realized when shopping for computers that I wanted an SSD installed, but that it would be a lot cheaper if I bought the SSD and installed it rather than customizing it in the Apple Store. So I bought a nice Samsung 128GB SSD (820 or 840 - can't remember which) and did the installation. I went ahead and installed two 4GB sticks of RAM while I was at it. Everything was just dandy: my boot time was just under 9 seconds, and all of my data-heavy apps booted in no-time at all. Then all **** broke loose.
About two weeks ago, I opened my computer and I got the dreaded "? File Folder" notification with a gray screen. I immediately thought hard drive failure. No matter how many times I tried to boot, the computer just would not talk to the SSD anymore. I used Internet Recovery to get into my Disk Utility, and the entire partition was gone. I assumed the worst but wanted to be sure - I bought a hard drive enclosure and hooked the SSD up to an older Macbook, and lo and behold: it worked perfectly. I was not only able to recover data, but I could write data to the drive. Nothing appeared wrong with the drive when I plugged it into the old Macbook, but my newer Macbook still would not recognize it. Even my fiance's Windows 7 PC recognized the drive as "?" (since it was formatted for Mac, but hey - it recognized that it existed!).
I decided to re-install the original HDD that came with the 2012 Macbook Pro (the one I removed in favor of the SSD). I was able to re-install the OS and I can boot up at will, but everything is different. The performance issues are extremely noticeable. I can't have more than two programs running at one time without the spinning wheel of death appearing. My boot time went from 9 seconds to 2 minutes. I know that SSDs increase performance, so there is some slight performance downgrade to be expected since I am using a mechanical drive now -- but these are not normal issues. Sometimes I can't even type a web address into Safari without the wheel appearing. iTunes, and specifically the App Store, take minutes to open - and I have no media is on iTunes.
Here's the thing: I have tried just about anything to fix this problem that Google can pull up. I've verified the HDD, I've booted into Safe Mode, reset RAM and cache, run benchmarks and other performance tests, entered all sorts of weird language into Command Prompt, and studied Activity Monitor - I can't find a single red flag that would indicate anything being wrong. It appears to be a perfectly functioning, updated computer.
I'm thinking a piece of hardware failed that triggered the error with the SSD. I'm not really sure though since all of my performance tests indicate perfectly functioning hardware. I'm a little afraid to take it to the Apple store because I know they'll tell me it's my fault for opening the computer and replacing the hard drive in the first place.
Any ideas? At this point anything to salvage this computer would be helpful.

    Spin Cycle,
were those other computers which were able to recognize your SSD in its external enclosure also Macs? Do you know if your SSD has its most recent firmware revision installed? (If it doesn’t, its installer can be downloaded from the Samsung SSD firmware page for burning onto a bootable DVD.) I haven’t used the 830 myself, so I don’t know what its reputation is with Macs. I have an 840 PRO in my MacBook Pro, which has been trouble-free for me, but my understanding is that the 840 EVO has had trouble with Macs in its earlier firmware revisions — so I’m wondering if the 830 has a known track record with Macs, good or bad.

  • Problems after changing hard drives

Hello, I have a Toshiba L655 part.no PSK1JE (if necessary also put the serial no).I changed my hard drive by putting a new SSD, but I have problems in choosing the right drivers. I tried on the site, but I downloaded the drivers are not installed, as if they were incompatible. Could you kindly link me all the drivers needed to run my notebook? So save them and next time I have them all available. Thank You.

For the laptop to work as designed, you need to install essentially all of the drivers and utilities at that site. The order is important. So start with a fresh install of 64-bit Windows 7. You should install the Intel chipset utility followed by the ATI display driver. I would install the other Intel drivers next.
Install the Value Added Package before any other Toshiba utility.

  • Can't boot OS X 10.6 dvd after changing hard drive

    Hi everyone!,
I upgrade my hd on my 13" Macbook Pro 2.26 today. Now when i try to Install the DVD that came with the box called "Mac OS X Install DVD Mac os VERSION 10.6 dISC VERSION 1.0. My question is: Do i have to buy the Snow Leopard OS in order to install the OS in a new hard drive or is it something wrong on my computer? Thanks in advance!

It would be helpful to tell us what happened when you tried to install OS X. At this point I can only make broad suggestions. First, boot from the installer DVD as follows:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
    1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Prepare your new drive as follows:
    1. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    3. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    4. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    5. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    6. After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.

  • Complex issues after new hard drive installed

I have an older white Macbook (MacBook2,1  2.16 Core 2 Duo  2.16GHz).  The harddrive was failing, so I took it to a local repair shop (not an Apple store).
They replaced the hard drive.  I brought it home and restored it from my Time Machine backup.
The Time Machine restore worked (my accounts are all in place, my files are all in place, almost all of my 3rd party software is working).
Most (but not all) of my Apple software won't work.  I've been trying to figure out the root cause but can't pin it down.  It's running Mac OS 10.6.8, but before the disc replacement I had been running 10.8.
The most up-to-date OS installer disc I have is for 10.6.  I had upgraded to 10.8 using the App Store and so I don't have a disc for this version to restore from.
App Store won't open; I get an error message that says "You have Mac OS X 10.6.8. The application requires Mac OS X 10.7 or later."

Without App Store or iTunes working, I don't know how I can upgrade my OS back to 10.8.  And without doing that, most of my Apple software won't work.  It's a catch 22.
Any advice on how I can upgrade back to 10.8?

Thanks. This seems to have worked.
I ran the reinstall and then upgraded back to 10.6.8 via software update, and App Store and iTunes both work now.  I was able to log into my iTunes account and my old purchase of 10.7 was there.  I'm downloading it now as I type this.
I still have to deal with the fact that iLife and iWork and Xcode aren't working (and probably other things too), but the biggest hurdle seems to be crossed.  I'll deal with the other apps tomorrow.
    Thanks again!

Plug the external drive into a computer by usb or whatever box you have available..
When you say blank, is it correctly formatted.. we recommend HFS+ which is Mac OS Extended (jorrnaled)
Make sure you use GUID type disk setup not MBR if it came from PC world.
Copy the files via finder from TC to the external drive.
