Syncing iTunes on a new PC with my existing iPhone

Hello
My friend has a new Windows 7 PC. His old one (with his old iTunes) died. He downloaded iTunes on the new PC and is trying to sync his iPhone to it. He logged into iTunes and the music store using the same info he uses to download apps on his iPhone.
When he tries to sync the phone with the PC, it asks him to erase the iPhone in order to use it with iTunes. but he has no apps or music on the PC.
How can he sync his new iTunes with his phone's apps, music, movies etc?

Some of the items are not purchased (things like MP3s).
What should he do about these?
Also, if he does this and syncs, will it save his favorites lists, addresses, and other info?

I tried to sync the music on my PC with my old iPhone, but all of my songs on iTunes were deleted, How do I get them back? When I go to the iTunes store and look at the songs I hade before, it says I already purchased them, but when I go back to my library, they are all gone. I thought it was just removing the songs from my phone, but now I have no music on my phone or PC. Please help!

The sync is one way - computer to iphone.
You need to copy everything from your old computer to your new one.

  • I have an iPhone 4.  Am I able to sync this to the new iPad with Retina Display?

I have an iPhone 4 with iOS 5.1.1.  Am I able to sync this to the new iPad with Retina Display?  I'm considering purchasing it!

The iPad will be $329 AUD if replaced via postage service or $309 AUD if replaced at an Apple Store. Yes they will give you the replacement and take your old iPad so I would suggest if you can back it up to iTunes so that you can restore the back up to the replacement.

  • I have downloaded the most recent itunes on my new computer with windows 8        but a message pops up saying "the itunes library.itl file is locked, on a locked disk or you do not have write permission for this file. How do I fix?

I have downloaded the most recent itunes on my new computer with windows 8 but when I attempt to get in I get this message "The itunes library.itl file is locked, ona locked disk, or you do not have write permission for this file."  How do i fix this?

    Repair iTunes Security Permissions
Right-click on your main iTunes folder and click Properties, then go to the Securitytab and click Advanced. Use the Change Permissions... button grant to your account (or the Users group) and SYSTEM full control of this folder, subfolders and files, then tick the option to Replace permissions entries... which will repair permissions throughout the library. When complete switch to the General tab, click in the Read-only check box to clear it, then click Apply.
If you don't have the option to change the permissions then use the Owner tab and Edit... button to take ownership from an account with administrator privileges. Tick the option to Replace owner on subcontainers and objects.
Repeat with the media folder if it isn't stored inside the main iTunes folder.
If you've brought over the library from another computer you may also want to remove any "mystery" identities (S<string of dashes & digts>) that have come over from the old computer...
The images above are from Windows 7. Hopefully the system isn't too different in Windows 8.

  • Problems with syncing iTunes - Partly - losing new information

My iPhone 3GS just worked fine for a long time but since a few weeks I got this annoying problem:
Syncing with iTunes works superficially fine but after looking deeper into some programms (means using them) on the iPhone I've discovered some strange things.
    Two examples:
    1. After syncing with iTunes, all my Podcasts loaded with the iPhone are not any longer on the iPhone. They just vanished and I've got to download them again.
    2. Some programms lose the changes I made into them (for example some highscore in games or destinations in my navigation app) after the sync. It seems that iTunes is backup them with older files/data. But why? On many other programms everything works just fine as usual.
I'm very thankful for every idea to solve this problem because this is very annoying. Thank you!

    Hey Mrs. Dorf,
It sounds like you have two separate questions, to address the first:
iTunes Store: Associating a device or computer to your Apple ID
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4627
Your Apple ID can have up to 10 devices and computers (combined) associated with it. Each computer must also be authorized using the same Apple ID. Once a device or computer is associated with your Apple ID, you cannot associate that device or computer with another Apple ID for 90 days. You can view which devices or computers are currently associated, remove unused devices or computers, and see how long before they can be associated with a different Apple ID from the Account Information page in iTunes on your computer
To address your second question, the issue of your device not displaying in iTunes:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Now that I moved my itunes to a new computer why will my iphone and ipod touch not sync?

I just switched my itunes to my new laptop from my desktop (which no longer works).  Everything seemed to be ok after I updated to the newest version of itunes.  Now I cannot get my iphone (3G) and my ipod touch to sync at all.  In fact when I plugged in my ipod touch it erased everything I had on there.  I know these are older devices but I had no problems with syncing previously so why now?  Even the backups will not work.

You can only sync to one computer/iTunes library. If you switch iTunes will erase the iPod and replaces the media with what is in the iTunes library of the new computer.
    You should have done this:
Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive: Apple Support Communities
You said "Even the backups will not work.". What happens when you try to restore from backup?

  • HT202213 what steps do I need to set up a new pc with my existing itunes library?

I just purchased a new PC.  I have itunes set up on my old PC.  How can I bring iTunes into my new pc?  Do I need to start with installing/downloading iTunes and then transfer over the libraries?

    Additionally...
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • Moving iTunes to a new PC (I have an iPhone that I use with iTunes)

I just just a new PC, it's much better than the old one. Moving the music should be no problem, I think I can just copy all of my music to the new machine using a DVD burner or a external hard drive. How can I actually move all of the other stuff that iTunes does though? For example, my "Applications", and my podcasts. I sync with google mail, so I can just set that all up I guess.
Any tips from anyone that has done this would be MUCH appreciated. My old machine is windows xp, my new machine is windows vista, both 32-bit if that makes a difference.
    Thanks!

The following article tells you how to do it using an iPod.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1329?viewlocale=en_US
In fact the method works just as well with an external drive - obviously you don't have to do all the iPod specific stuff.
The basic method is to install iTunes on the new PC and then replace the iTunes folder in the Music which iTunes creates with the iTunes folder from your old PC.
The catch in Vista is that Vista may think that the iTunes from the old PC does not belong to you so you don't get write access.
You have to adjust the permissions for the iTunes folder so your account has full control.
