Syncing Leopard iCal/ Address Book with a PC?

I have a mac at home and a PC at work. Now that Leopard is here, is there an easy way to sync my contacts and calendars between the two? I am a .mac member but I doubt that will help me here.
I've been reading a little about LDAP/CalDAV and I assume the answer may rest in those two solutions but the technical goes a little over my head. Are there any cheap or free LDAP/CalDav servers with which I can sync Address Book and iCal on my mac and then a program on the PC that will sync with the server?
Right now I'm running Firefox and Lighting on the PC, but I would be open to other programs that may be better suited for this. I've been looking at something called Chandler which looks like it perhaps could be used as a bridge between the Mac & PC but I'm utterly clueless on how to make that work.
I would also love to be able to sync Leopard notes and To Do's with the PC but I'll happily start with my contacts and calendars. One day at a time.

Hi,
as I had exactly the same problem, here is the best workable solution I found (in absence of any workable, cheap online solutions):
If you have a Nokia Series 60 phone (e.g. N73 or N95), you can use the phone to perfectly sync contacts, calendar and to-dos. Just sync it via iSync with your Mac, then sync it via PC suite with Lotus Notes or Microsoft Outlook on your PC. There you go, everything's perfectly in sync.
I'm still looking for a good solution to share calendars online with multiple users, as phpicalendar does not work any longer for me in Leopard. Hope that some free CalDAV servers are offered soon.
Michael

  • How to sync Notes, iCal & Address Book between iPod & Mac?

    Hi, there:
Could someone please be so kind to teach me how to sync Notes, iCal & Address Book between my iPod Touch (with iOS6) & Mac (with OS X10.6.8)?
What file format would it be in when Notes is synced from my iPod Touch into Mac, if possible?
How may I drag photos in my regular photos files (not using iPhoto) from my Mac into iPod Touch?
And........HAPPY NEW YEAR of 2014 to Everyone!!!!!!!!

Thanks so much for your detailed reply.  Much appreciated!
Just to confirm my understanding that 100% clear on the solution, if my wife gets her own iCloud account, on her phone she'll receive her own emails & iMessages (makes sense) but not contacts.  Calendars though we could share.
Without two separate iCloud accts though -- iCloud on my phone, and her email through Gmail on her phone -- we could share all the common iCloud data (contacts, calendar, notes, reminders, etc.) by enabling the appropriate settings on her phone.
Am I correct to conclude then that the sole benefit of her adding own iCloud acct is email through iCloud (and I guess the free 5GB)?  It would not be possible to simply and easily have one common 'family' address book (i.e. since while Calendars are share-able, contact libraries are not)?

Now I want to sync my Address Book with my partner's iCloud account. I have his account marked in my iMAC's Address Book Preferences, but it is not syncing. What to do?

  • Only want2use iCal+Address book with iSynch and Memos+Tasks with Palm T/X

I was using Tungsten T2 and isync happily. I was using isync to use the address book and iCal and when I synched it also synched the palm info in the Calendar and address book in my Palm desktop. The memos and tasks in Palm desktop also worked properly.
I upgraded my palm to T/X and have had many problems with deletion of categories on the handheld, duplication of task and diary entries, address entries with weird symbols added that need to be deleted, desktop memos and tasks not updating. iCal seemed to work OK but the palm desktop calendar did not display any future entries. Is this normal.
I removed isync and after resorting everything on the device - enabled all conduits for palm and resynced. So now everything seems to work properly.
My main questions are: what did I do wrong for this to happen which led to me spending hours sorting everything out on the palm device manually?
And: Is there a way to keep everything synching on the palm device AND iCal and address book for palm?
And: If not: Is there a way to use iCal and address book for mac AND keep you tasks and memos synching on the palm desktop? As I prefer the palm software for tasks as I have several categories for my tasks and do not allocate tasks on given days.
Thanks for reading and I hope to hear some quality advice from you soon. Matt

Starting with your last question about first synchronizing with the Palm Desktop calendar and then later with the Mark/Space Events conduit, the answer is no. Your first synchronization with any of the three Mark/Space conduits—whether one, a pair or the more conventional all three—requires that you overwrite the handheld with that data type using that Mark/Space conduit.
You should read this article about the limitations between the display and transfer of calendar events between Palm devices and iCal:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93172
Understanding those limitations, you should selectively 'fix' the events in iCal so that they are represented properly in iCal. You will have to live with the limitations of such event display on your Palm. If you 'fix' them on your Palm, you will only create additional issues when they are synchronized with iCal using either iSync or the Missing Sync.
Old repeating events can be 'rescheduled' in iCal by selecting the event and changing the end date, or they can be deleted, though that will result in their deletion from your Palm device. That's one reason that it is important to take that last 'snapshot' with the Palm Desktop, so that you can refer to historic data if you need to.
It's also important to think about why you would want to carry possibly hundreds of aged events around in the Palm of your hand. Realistically, why would you want handheld access to data older than say, one year? After installing the Missing Sync, you can double-click on the Mark/Space Events conduit and optionally limit the transfer of events from iCal to your handheld. You simply select the drop-down menu labeled Ignore desktop events older than: and choose from an interval of 1, 2, 4 or 8 weeks, 6 months or 1 year, instead of the default Sync All option.
That technique is another method to deal with historic data, because the 'misrepresented' events older than will not be transfered from iCal to your handheld even during that initial synchronization where your handheld data is overwritten, if you select one of those delimiters.
Mark/Space recognizes groups and categories in iCal and the Address Book when using a Palm OS 5 or later device which supports them. iSync ignores them, because groups and categories are not mapped in the iSync Palm Conduit.

  • Sync *part of* address book with google contacts

Within the Address Book I've seen it's possible to share contacts with a googlemail account.
However, is it possible to share part of an address book (say, a group or a smart group)? I'd like to share some contacts with colleagues at work but I don't need to share all my personal contacts etc.
    All thoughts gratefully received.
    Edward

    Thanks Julian.
I had not thought to click on the cell phone image/icon in the iSync window so as to be given the choice of Group folders to select to sync with my cell phone.
Before posting here I used the online iSync Help and did not see it mentioned anywhere.
It would be nice if Apple made this apparent by including a menu item in iSync that would take a user to that options window.

  • How to sync contacts and Address Book with New IPad?

    Hello!
I'm having no luck syncing Contacts. I've set iCloud settings to sync Contacts, as shown in the iPad manual. I want to sync Contacts on my new iPad with Address Book (5.0.3) on my laptop (10.6.8) and with Address Book on my iMac (10.5.8).
I've had some success by 'manually' using iTunes on the iMac and the laptop (iTunes>Devices>iPad>Info button>Sync Contacts>All Contacts). But this is not pulling contacts from the iPad to the iMac or laptop; not syncing, just one-way traffic.
    Thanks
    Potty

You'll have to update to Mac OS X Lion.
It's in the requirements listed at the bottom of this page -> Apple - iCloud - Your info up to date on all your devices.

  • Why can't I sync my .mac address book with my address book on my imac?

Ive read all the instructions made sure all my settings and preferences are correct, but my .mac contacts simply wont download into my contacts book on my .mac
    Very very frustrating!
    Please help!

here's some more information from michael lafferty, a frequent contributor:
"You also need to understand that now is not a particularly good time to be dealing with .Mac Sync issues, because server side changes have been made to accommodate the release of Mac OS X 10.5, and synchronization between Mac OS X 10.3 and any later version of Mac OS X is no longer supported. Substantial performance problems evident over the last few days have also made life difficult for many .Mac users.
"And, now more than ever—despite the likely slower response due to these changes and the large numbers of those likely affected—you should work with a .Mac support representative to resolve your registration or connection issue before attempting to reset your synchronization data. You've got the right idea, but you cannot proceed until you are able to connect and exchange information is a session with .Mac.
"To trigger a support request, fill out the web form on the lower part of this page. The status indicators at .Mac show that the synchronization update is still in progress, and that users may not see expected results."

  • Sync Address Book with Google Contacts

    Hi,
recently I am syncing the Mac Address Book and my iPhone with Google Contacts.
If I add a birthday to one of my contacts on my iPhone, the birthday also will be added on Google Contacts. If I sync my Mac Address Book with Google Contacts now, the birthday doesn't show up on my Mac Address Book.
So my birthday calendar in iCal always is empty...
    Any solutions?
    Regards and thanks,

    Hi,
Google uses Google Sync to synchronize your contacts with your iOS and OS X. But this, from Jan 30, 2013, is only available to the paid versions of Google Apps (read more on http://support.google.com/a/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2716936).
You can continue to sync on both iOS and OS X using the CardDAV protocol, which, IMHO, is even better.
Follow the instructions in this post: http://support.google.com/mail/answer/2753077?hl=en
Mountain Lion Contacts also supports CardDAV accounts. All you need to do is add the CardDAV account with your account credentials and it will synchronize again.
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers,
    Ramses

  • Syncing Mac Address Book with iCloud

Hello, I am trying to sync my Mac Address Book with iCloud. All contacts that are created under iCloud on Mac Addess Book are immediately synced. But if I create a contact on the Mac book exclusively, that contact will not get synced with iCloud.
Does it mean that if we want to sync Mac address book contacts with iCloud, they should always be created under the iCloud category on the Mac? Can someone help me with this. I have checked all sync options are switched "on" and sync is working fine across all other apps.
    Thanks,
    Farhan

I believe the duplicate address books stems from the move from MobileMe to iCloud.
In system preferences I found an iCloud icon and also a MobileMe icon. I was logged in under both.
    1)  In the Address Book preferences I selected iCloud and unchecked Enable this account.
    2)  In the Address Book I selected iCloud and clicked on the minus “-” to remove that account – leaving only the local Mac address book.
    3)  I went into system preferences and logged out of MobileMe
    4)  In system preferences I opened iCloud and the “Contacts” was not selected (from above) and I selected it.
I got a dialog box asking if I wanted to merge the iCloud contact with the local contacts – clicked YES.
… spinning wheel for a minute … voila – only one address book account – iCloud with syncing to iCloud and my iPhone.

  • Sync address book with two different google accounts

Im trying to sync my address book with two separate google accounts. I understand how this works normally through mail preferences and have it working with my personal email account but my university's emails are through gmail as well and i wanted to sync the same address book with me other gmail account. Please help, any info is much appreciated!

I've only found workarounds for this. It amazes me this isn't available, but I've seen a lot of chatter about this throughout the web. The best temporary solution is synching your iPhone with Google as an exchange server and then synchronizing that with your computer through iTunes. Assuming you have an iPhone.

  • Synching desktop Address Book with my .Mac Address Book. Is it possible?

Can i sync my desktop address book with my .Mac address book?
    Thanks.

I am also having this problem with my address book synching to .Mac. But my calendar and bookmarks have appeared with no problem so I'm not doing anything wrong -and I haven't created custom profiles either. Do you really think this is due to the lead up to Mobile Me? If so, why did the bookmarks etc sync with no problem? It is frustrating because this is what I really need to access.

  • Sync with both Outlook and iCal / Address book

    Hi,
I had an Exchange account, the contacts and the calendar was syncronized with my iPhone.
The Exchange account was deleted, so does my outlook client (actually, it was in my old company notebook what I had to give it back ...).
The conatct and calender entries are still in my iPhone, actually I need those very much.
But - if i delete the Exchange account from the iPhone, it will delete all the contacts and calendar entries - no option to merge to an other source. If I leave it as is - I can not save/ sync or edit these entries in my mac, because they are not synchronised any more ...
Do anyone has any idea how to save this entries to my mac directly, preferably to iCal / address book (without the Exchenge server and without the outlook client)?
    thanx a lot

    Hi,
after following a couple of threads and hints about this, I decided to research the issue myself. Posts like http://www.entourage.mvps.org/syncservices/ical.html seems to be out-of-date compared to my Entourage 2008/Leopard 10.5.1 configuration, but the hints provided are translatable to newer configs (with some imagination). No warranties, but this worked for me:
    1. Open Entourage, choose preferences and disable all sync services. (By now, you should have all your events within Entourage Calendar, and being prepared to loose all data i iCal and PDA.)
    2. Open iSync, choose preferences, and reset sync history. Close iSync.
    3. Open iCal, delete the Entourage Calendar. Close iCal.
    4. Navigate to ~Library/Application Support and delete
    a) The folder Calendars and all its contents
    b) All contents of the folder iSync
    c) All contents of the folder SyncServices
    5. Navigate to ~Library/Preferences
    a) Delete com.apple.iCal.plist (if you find any other iCal files, those should probably be deleted as well)
    b) Browse this directory for any files containing iSync or SyncServices. Delete'em all.
    c) Repeat this excercise for the ByHost subdirectory.
    6. Restart Entourage, choose preferences and switch the desired sync services on.
    7. Restart iCal, and watch the Entourage calendar reappear (could take a minute or two).
    8. Restart iSync, and synchronize your PDA. If the sync process asks to add another Entourage calendar to iCal, approve this. This happened to me, but no events ever made it to this calendar, and I was able to delete it from iCal directly following the sync. It hasn't reappeared.
Note: These hints are for calendar sync, and provided you have all events in the Entourage Calendar. I chose to empty iCal and PDA for the first sync, and to overwrite them with the information from Entourage.

  • Entourage Sync with iCal & Address Book - Fixed!

Finally found a solution that really works.
    Background
I had the infamous issue of trying to get Entourage Calendar and Contacts to Sync with iCal & Address book for the purpose of syncing with iTunes on my iPhone.
I've had most of the symptoms listed on this site.
It only syncs one way, Entourage Calendar shows up in iCal, but it's blank, Entourage Calendar does not show up at all in iCal, but contacts show up in Address book.
I've read nearly every post about it and tried all the various fixes listed, but none of them worked, or at least not consistently.
    My setup:
OS X 10.5.5 MacBook Pro (latest updates)
    Entourage 2004 (latest patches)
(If your using Mobile me, log out before you do this)
Here's what you'll need to do:
    1. Backup your Main Identity which contains all your entourage info, email, contacts, calendars, etc. (Just in case you goof something up)
It's located in your home user account ~User/youraccount/documents/Microsoft User Data (Backup this whole folder)
If you don't know all your email credentials such as username, password, smtp, pop info, jott it down as it will save you some time later.
    2. Launch Entourage and uncheck the Sync Services. Quit Entourage and all Office Apps.
Also you should archive all your entourage data if you want to copy it to the new setup.
Archive the contacts and Calendar Events separately.
    3. Launch iCal and manually delete the Entourage Calendar (if present) Quit iCal.
    4. Now open your documents folder and locate the folder named Microsoft User Data and rename the folder to Microsoft User Data Original
    5. Create a new OS X User from the System Preferences... Accounts
    6. Logoff your current user account and login to your new user account.
    7. Launch Entourage and enter your email info.
    8. Now create a single calendar event.
    9. Go to Entourage Preferences, and check the Sync Services. (click OK, etc.)
    10. Wait 5 minutes, then launch iCal and you will see the Entourage Calendar with your single event.
You should also see your contact that was created when you setup email in the Address Book.
If this worked you've isolated the syncing problem to a corrupt file in your user account or corrupt data in your entourage account.
You can go back to your original user account and delete all the info from entourage to see if you had corrupt data in entourage, (youd did back it up first, right?) or you can follow the procedures below to move all your stuff over to the new login account.
Now you'll need to migrate your data from your Old login account to your new login account.
(I've tried just moving the new Entourage identity back to the old account, and it didn't always work)
The easiest way to move data between accounts is to login as root.
To enable the root user, Go to Utilities, Directory Utility, and under the edit menu, select enable root user, enter a unique password, later you can disable root login when your all done)
Logout of your new login and login as root with the new password you just created
When it prompts for a username type "root". If you don't have that option click the Other login and then type in root as the username and the new password.
Once your logged in as root, be careful as you can pretty much trash anything without any warnings.
Now Open your original user folder located in ~User/youraccount as well as the new user you just created
    (not the root account)
Open the folders side by side and drag the contents from old to new:
    Desktop
    Documents
    iTunes
    Movies
    Music
plus any other info you need.
Log back into your new user account, and run a repair permissions from disk utility.
Launch Entourage and enter a new event and contact. Then wait a few minutes and verify that it made it over to iCal & Address book.
If it did, and it should have, you can then import your entourage archives, do contacts first, then wait a few minutes and verify it shows up in Address Book, then do your Calendar events and verify.
When everything is syncing between entourage and iCal/Address Book you can connect your iPhone and enable syncing.
    A few important notes:
-If you have Years worth of Calendar Items in entourage, you will most likely run into problems, so archive your old Events and only restore that which you need.
-You may also need to retrieve old application preferences.
-Once your sure you've got everything, you can delete the Microsoft User Data Original folder that we renamed and put in your Documents Folder.
    Hope this helps somebody out.

Entourage calendar does not sync as you are expecting, with iCal.
Turn your Entourage sync services on (to sync your calendar) and you will notice in iCal a new calendar on the left, called Entourage. Mind has a purple color to it, for example.
Now, in iCal, create a new appointment and assign it TO the Entourage calendar. Now sync, and hey presto it shows up in Entourage.
This is by design, Entourage does not sync ALL of your iCal calendars, it will only sync the Entourage calendar which is created in iCal.
For example, I have Home, Work, Personal and Entourage calendars in iCal - appointments I make with my Home, Work or Personal calendar will not appear in Entourage, period. Only appointments made in iCal using the Entourage calendar will appear in Entourage (after a sync).
Likewise, appointments made IN Entourage Calendar, are sync'd to iCal and are only visible if you show the Entourage calendar in iCal - (it's switched ON by default, but can be switched off by un-ticking the calendar in the left pane of iCal).
    Does this make sense?

  • Problem with Entourage to ICal & Address Book sync

I have recently has a problem with syncing information logged in Entourage's calendar & address book across to iCal & Address book, which then in turn syncs with my iPhone.
For some reason the information is not now being sync'd across to iCal & Address book. I have checked that I have set the preferences correctly both in Entourage & Mac sync preferences but still it doesn't transfer the info.

Since the issue with is with Entourage, and it's not an Apple product you should consider posting your question on Microsoft's own forums as they would be geared more toward your issue than an Apple forum:
