Syncing list not listing the ipod

I've searched the discussions but cans seem to find any other reference to this problem.
I have a 60 gig video iPod and an iPhone and sync both to my iTunes. In the preferences>syncing, it lists the most recent backup of the iPhone but the iPod is not listed.
I have restored both devices recently but can't seem to find any solution.
I would like to have confidence that the iPod is backing up so does anybody know how to resolve this?
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.

Only iPhones and the Touch are listed in that screen as they are the only ones that are synced and back up in that way. The non-media content (calendar, address book, etc) from those two devices is backed up. You older iPod doesn't have the same applications and doesn't get backed up.
I am currently syncing three iPods to the same account, a Touch, a 3rd gen Nano and a 5th gen 60 gig. Only the Touch appears in that list. What you're seeing is completely normal.

You can sync your iPod with multiple computers, but what can be synced is very limited.  See this article for more details.

  • Itunes does not recognise the ipod after update to itunes 8.2.0.23

Hi, Now find, after putting new songs in my play list, that when I plug in ipod to update songs on ipod itunes does not recognise the ipod.
The version of iTunes I updated to was 8.2.0.23 - everything worked fine until then. I see there is a newer version 8.2.1 now available - do you think by installing this the "unable to recognise" problem would be fixed???
    Thanks for your thoughts!

I have a similar problem with the iPhone. Tried everything you can think of and then some. There is apparently some devastating bug 7.6 introduced into normal USB device recognition. I've been able to force the phone into recovery mode; the boot recovery USB driver does still work. Restoring the phone every time I need to sync is both scary and time-consuming.

  • "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet" Help?

Hello all, new to the forums.
I've been recieving the error message "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet". This problem didn't occur at all for the past 2 years of using itunes.
I've already scanned through numerous websites and forums for help, but none of them worked.
This  set of instructions resulted in no change to any of the problems, though iTunes lists that as the supposed solution.
    # Open Internet Options from control panel.
    # Click the Connections tab.
    # Click the LAN Settings button.
    # Select the Automatically detect settings checkbox.
Others include installing IE7, which that didn't work either.
    Can anyone help?

Hello, well im having some problems with my ipod 4th gen it will not turn on and when i plug it in to itunes it will not come up saying i need to restore. when i try that it will not complet. the ipod will not do anything at all... please help me i havent got  extra money to spend..

Just what happens when the restore does not complete?
    Error message?
Does it freeze? Is so what is listed in the status bar of iTunes?

  • Setting Up iPod sync options without having the iPod connected

Is there any way to do this, to be able to set up what will sync with my iPod, what playlists to load for instance on my nano, or onto which nano, without having it connected?
    Thanks.
    All the best,
    Tom

You need the iPod connected to make the changes. To prevent a sync when plugging in the iPod - hold down the 'option' and the 'command' keys when plugging in the ipod - key the keys down until the iPod is listed under the Devices list in iTunes - this will prevent a sync from taking place and you will be able to change your settings.

  • ITunes could not restore the iPod . . . because an error occurred

I recently upgraded my iPod Touch (3rd Generation) to iOS 4. I an effort to enable the hardware encryption functionality of the device, I followed Apple's instructions to backup the iPod, erase it to factory settings (using the "Restore" button on the status pane of the iPod section of iTunes and attempt to restore from the backup I just made. Unfortunately, the restore now fails 100% of the time with the error "iTunes could not restore the iPod [iPod name] because an error occurred." There are no error numbers listed.
Any assistance anyone can provide would be much appreciated. A decent chunk of data that was local to my device now seems to be missing.

I had this exact problem, just as described by the original poster. I went to the Apple store, but the Genius Bar was totally unable to help. I am glad I went, however, in that they did have a possible explanation, which was as alarming as it was unexpected: the backup files are probably corrupt (in my case, perhaps by an (unwanted) simultaneous iOS upgrade to 4.02?). Apple had no solution, but the only choice I can see is restoring a previous, good version of the backup image to your computer, and then trying the restore again. Hopefully you have Time Machine or something similar--for once in my life, I am prepared. The files in question are located in different places on Mac and PC. See:
    http://forums.macnn.com/103/ipod-iphone-and-ipad/355013/iphone-backup-file-locat ion/)
Restore the entire folder, just to be safe. iTunes now accepts the backup and seems to be working normally. It has reset, and the full restore is in process. I won't know for a few hours if my all app data is intact, so I'll have to report back.
PS: Do to some panicky monkeying around earlier in the day, I also had to restore earlier versions of these 3 files to make it work, as iTunes was no longer recognizing the old image files as belonging to my iPod. I'm not sure which one is truly responsible for the confusion.

  • I tunes could not contact the ipod software update server

Hello all,  I am running a Dell laptop running windows 7 professional with mobile broadband.  I have the latest i Tunes software installed.  I have a ipod touch that I am trying to update the software but keep getting the same error.  i tunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet.
I have seen many potential solutions and have tried them all.  What can I do to remedy this situation?

    Thank you Illaass
None of the suggestions in your link fixed my problem.  HOWEVER, I did find something that did!  I used the network diagnostic tool in i Tunes.  It was not recongizing the internet connection.  It offered some solutions, which include the ones at the link you provided plus a few more.  The fix seemed to be to de-select the option "check for server certificate revocation*" in internet options -> advanced -> scroll down to the "Security" section, 5th item in the list.  I am not a computer guy and I'm not sure why this worked, but it was a suggestion from i Tunes network diagnostics.  Hope this helps someone else.

I recently bought a new laptop because my old one crashed.  The only backup I had for my music was on my ipod.  My new computer will not recognize the ipods music and I can't transfer anything.  It keeps asking me to sync the ipod to this computer, but I'm scared to lose all my music.  I want to transfer some of the music onto my iphone but I can't.  I'm very frustrated and wish I knew more about computers at the moment!?!?  What do I do???

You will need the help of some sort of 3rd party software to help you copy the content from your Shuffle back to your PC.  Once you have done that, you can reimport this music into iTunes and configure it to sync to your new Shuffle.

We'd better check on that, kris. If you enable iTunes in your Windows firewall, does that help with your connection? See the following document for instructions:
