Syncing macbook and network drive
ok here it goes, I have a macbook, i also have a dell desktop. i take a large volume of photos and have a large amount already. My macbook hd isn't big enough to hold everything I want as well as all my photos. So I have an external hd. now, i use my macbook and pc for photos, and i'd like all my photos on my external hd and on my pc, but i don't want to have to copy them from my camera on to my mac then onto my pc. so i'm looking for a way of syncing my external hd with a shared folder on the pc. i'm happy to always copy photos from my camera onto the external hd via my mac, but would like a way of automatically syncing this hd (obviously while still connected to my mac) with the networked windows folder.. (thought of automator??)... having it copy any new files from the folder on the pc to the external hd would be a massive bonus..
any suggestions please??!!
hope i've made sense.

Kernel Panic while transfering data between MAC HD and network drives
Kernel Panic while transfering data between MAC HD and network drives. it's an iMAC 24" 2011. Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I can't seem to find the cause to this.Thank you guys !

You might now create a new temporary user account. Log into the new account. Do the panics still occur?
I would also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. Sometimes they can be difficult to track down. Looking at each new panic log would help determine if it's cause is associated with the same extensions. -

Syncing photos from network drive
all my photos are stored on a network drive and itunes successfully syncs all photos from this drive to my iphone. however, the next time i turn on my computer and re-sync, i see from the photos tab that the location of my photos has been changed to the iphotos library, which i don't use.
this may be happening because i run itunes so soon after booting that the computer hasn't had the chance to find the network drive yet. and that's fine. but if i re-select the source of photos to the same network drive, itunes insists that it is a different library than on my iphone and wants to sync all the photos from scratch.
is there a way to indicate that this is the same source and not a new source?Same results here... I have an Infrant ReadyNAS RAID file server that I bought to be my 'master' vault for all my data. My computers don't store any important data locally. Their "My Documents" shortcuts point to the fileserver.
When I tried to sync Apple TV to the My Pictures folder, iTunes would think for a few seconds and then give me the little exclaimation mark inside the triangle instead of the synching icon, and would go no further.
I was occasioanlly able to sync very small picture subfolders from under "My Pictures", but that was it.
Since I don't plan on moving the master copies of my photos off of the fileserver, I am just going to use a batch file to periodically mirror the x:\mypictures folder to c:\appletvsuckspicturemirror. Then I'll just set up Apple TC to go get the photos there instead.
robocopy "x:\my_documents\mypictures" c:\appletvsuckspicturemirror /e
I use robocopy for lots of other stuff because it only copies new or modified files (it's a free microsoft utility)

Ovi Suite to sync music from Network Drive
Ovi Suite will not allow me to select a Network Drive as the source folder for music - is this just a problem for me, or is this a fetaure of OviSuite ?
Tksmikewm wrote:
You stated in JANUARY 2010 that this was a much-requested feature, and yet it is STILL NOT incorporated into Ovi Suite. This is absolute rubbish. Many of us have networked media drives and cannot sync them with ovi suite. What century are you guys living in??
I have always copied my music to Nokia phones with file system. Today I tried for the first time in a loong time if Ovi suite is no longer **bleep** and understands this wonderous thing called networking.
It doesn't.
I don't get it, I don't get whats hard about it nor why it is not concidered to be priority problem to be fixed. I guess Microsoft is coming up with the new sync application and development of Ovi is halted? -
OVI Suite STILL cannot sync to a network drive
What is the point of having a support forum when everything gets ignored!
What is the point of having a feedback system when it all gets ignored!
I tried to select a network drive to sync photos and videos to but it wouldn't let me! I google it only to find that in this same forum, the question has been asked and AN EMPLOYEE from Nokia suggested they'll add it. This was over 10 months ago and still in this new version, nothing has been done on that front!! I still cannot select a network drive to sync photos and videos! I can't sync to the local drive cause frankly, the space available on the N8 is more than on the local drive!!
For how long will you go on ignoring us like this???
I have been a passionate defender of Nokia since 2001 till literally 5mins ago when after downloading the new OVI suite, a simple task like syncing contacts crashes OVI time and time again.
I can't select a network drive to sync to, all my support posts for the N8 have so far been ignored!!
Do you guys actually have any software testers in the company?? Why is it that anything to do with software, you get it so horribly wrong. Whoever is running that bit of the company needs to be fired and new brains brought into the mix!
I love Nokia as a company as they're full of ideas and potential but the software guys will spell doom for you! If something so simple like syncing contacts can be missed and the software is allowed to be released to the public with that very obvious bug!! Can't you just have it so things JUST WORK?!?!
My N8 is riddled with very simple and obvious bugs that I don't know how it passed. e.g screensaver not coming on when you lock the phone - you have no idea how annoying this bug is. Also for some reason, all my widgets are now about 20% bigger meaning the contents don't fit within the confines of the widget space and information is cut off!!
I am so **bleep** with the whole company right now I'm on the brink of just throwing it all away and saying goodbye to Nokia for ever!
But fortunately, my hatred for Steve Jobs is even more and can't be bothered with Android!!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SORT ALL THIS NIGGLING THINGS OUT!!!you can find the path in the windows registry:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Nokia\Nokia Ovi Suite\{D995DE8A-1556-45a3-BC7A-568E63663F25}\PcPath]
or just search the registry for the path shown in the 'Photos folder location' shown in the ovi suite.
or search the registry for the value 'photos path' -
"Files not found" and network drive
I'm new to iTunes, and I think there's something fundamental I don't understand about it. I'm hoping someone here can clue me in.
Here's the situation: I have iTunes 7 on a 2.8GHz laptop running WinXP. It's connected via ethernet-based home network to a 400MHz desktop running WinXP. I have a lot of MP3s and M3U playlists created with Winamp on the desktop, which has a much larger hard drive than the laptop -- IOW, I'm not willing to move the MP3s to the laptop, but I want to run iTunes using the laptop's faster CPU (it also has the high-speed USB port my wife's "new" 4G iPod requires).
So what I did was to point the iTunes music folder to the mapped network drive on the desktop and then import all the M3U playlists into iTunes. So far, so good. I can then sync the iPod and all the songs get copied over. However, the next time I reconnect the iPod, all the songs have the "!" symbol next to them, indicating iTunes can't "find" them. When attempting to sync, I get the message that the songs were not copied because they could not be found. I can manually re-point the files to the directory on the mapped drive, but what a pain! The files in the mapped directory are in multiple sub-directories, but iTunes doesn't seem to have trouble searching recursively through sub-directories, so I doubt that's the issue.
I don't see anything in the documentation about problems of this nature with network drives. Is this a "known" issue in the sense that everyone else knows about it except me? If this has been discussed elsewhere on the forum, let me know.
TIA,
Eric
Dell Windows XP ProI too find it disturbing that this software is not "home network friendly" I have a similar setup and have digitized 200+ cd's including everything that my kids listen to as well. There are also several wirelessly connected computers in my house, and the last thing I want is a half-dozen copies of every song scattered throughout the house chewing up disk space. So far, I have 3 iPods in our household and my goal is to centrally store music files and allow network access from remote pc's on my network to sync our iPods with music that we own. Windows Vista has this capability with media player 11, and if I were so inclined, I would buy generic mp3 players that are compatible with MS MP sync, but I would like to give Apple a chance to add this feature. If not, the iPods can always be sold on ebay and replaced with MS compatible devices. I don't really want to do this because we do like our iPods.

I updated my Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion and have had only minor issues with some software but I plugged in a USB flash drive and went to format it, it now appears only in disk utility and not on the desktop. I have tried restarting and reseting with the drive in and out, I tried it into my macbook and it does exactly the same there. I can't do anything in Disk Utility so can't access it in any way and it says errors if I try to eject it from DU. I'm not normally stumped but I can't figure this out at all. I'm hoping that someone here could give me an idea that I haven't thought of as it's a large Flash Drive and I really would like to keep using it.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer. If it has the same (bad) behavior on two different systems then there is a very good chance that the drive is toast.
BTW you'll get better response to your questions if the question actually reflects the problem you are having. In this case it would have been better to say you couldn't access the drive rather then that it doesn't show on the desktop.

Time Machine to back up MacBook AND External Drive?
I have a MacBook and a 1TB G Drive which holds all of my photographs and iTunes library (none of which is on my MacBook, since I ran out of space long ago), and where I have backed up my Documents folder by simply copying and pasting.
I bought another 1TB G Drive to use as a back up, but I have no idea what I'm doing. The first time I backed anything up I just copied and pasted again, from both the first drive and my MacBook, which is ridiculous and took hours and is pathetic.
I want to set up Time Machine so all of my applications and settings are backed up, in addition to my files which are in two separate places right now. I'm not sure how to set up the second drive to take care of both.
After looking at the FAQs at the top of this forum, I'm afraid that any partitions I set up may re-format the drives and thus wipe out everything I have. Any advice on how to set this up without losing my data would be appreciated. Thank you!1980qt50 wrote:

That may not be large enough. It varies greatly depending on how you use your Mac, but Time Machine usually requires 2-3 times the space of the data it's backing-up. So add-up the space used on your MacBook's internal HD and the amount used on the other drive. If that's less than 500 GB, you'll probably be fine. If it's between 500 GB and about 750 GB, it might work, at least for a while.

Most likely, piece of cake.
After looking at the FAQs at the top of this forum, I'm afraid that any partitions I set up may re-format the drives and thus wipe out everything I have.
No, Time Machine won't wipe out your data.
First check the Format of the media drive. You can do that via +Get Info+ in the Finder. In the General area of the Info panel it will show Format. If it's any variation of +Mac OS Extended,+ then Time Machine can back it up. If not, your best bet will be to switch drives -- format the new one for your Mac, copy the data to it, then erase and reformat the old one to be used for your backups. Post back for instructions if you need to do that.
You should erase and format the Time Machine drive with a single partition, per #5 in the FAQ.
When you're ready to start Time Machine, click the Options button in Time Machine > Preferences. See if the media drive is listed in the exclusions box; if it is, select it and click the minus sign. Then Time Machine will back it up.

Hi folks, I hope someone can assist. I have a Mac Mini 2011 running 10.8.5. All has been well. Suddenly, when I plugged in an external flash drive (USB), nothing showed up in Finder. Things I have done:
Confirmed SideBar and other Finder preferences are set to show/reveal external, network, and internal HDs
Tried multiple flash drives and hard drives, using drives formated in GUID/OSXExtended as well as FAT and NTSF. None show up.
Confirmed that the Hidden flag in terminal is not set.
Note: I can see the drives in Disk Utility, but the partitions/volumes are gray and will not be mounted.
Note: Network drives and internal drives appear and work as expected
Note: My network Time Machine also appears and performs as expected.
The only suspect I can think of is a small, free app I installed this morning called Caffein (which manages the sleep mode).
Also, I loged out and switched to another user account on the same machine (that I use solely for the purpose of troubleshooting), and it was similarly affected.
Thanks in advance!

I recently purchased a new 27" iMac. I want to be able to keep my photos and music in-sync with both my new iMac and my Macbook. For example, when I am on-the-go, I want to be able to open my Macbook and if I have downloaded a new song back home from my iMac; I want it to be available on my Macbook. I know I can enable Library Sharing via iPhoto or iTunes, but that only works with both computers on and running. I want something like MobileMe, where if one thing changes, it changes it on every device. However, I have gigabytes upon gigabytes of photos and music, therefore MobileMe or DropBox aren't useful to me. Please help me. I have read in some threads about using FireWire and such, but am illiterate when it comes to how to set this up.
Thanks,
Jeremiah House
<Edited by Host>I do exactly the same thing. But it's not as easy as one would think. I like to keep my MacBook exactly like my iMac right down to the desktop.
Music - If you use iTunes you need to turn on the home share option and let them sync when they see each other. This is automatic and built into iTunes. If you do not use iTunes, then syncing of your music should be no problem with ChronoSync.
Files other then in Mail - I use ChronoSync. I have it set to sync everything I want to keep on both machines automatically. The moment each computer sees the other they sync. Usually very quickly unless I have change, added, removed a lot of files.
Mail - You need to use an IMAP system to keep all mail synced as copying the files from computer to another will not put them back into mail. Like iTunes it has it's own database engine that everything has to go through.
Contacts, Calendar, notes, widgets, dock items, keychains, mail rules, bookmarks, and preferences - If you use MobileMe to sync then do not sync any other way. It will cause havoc... If you do not use MobileMe, then there are settings in ChronoSync to sync those too. -
I'm trying to achieve the simple process of syncing a macbook and a G4 both with the latest and greatest of everything. I have a usb bluetooth dongle for the G4 and was planning on just using iSync. Now thast I actually READ something, it looks liek this is no longer possible without .MAC. Is this true? I'm looking to sync all that I can, but most importantly the address book and iCal.
I suppose I could sync to my phone then take the phoen in the other room and sync the other machine. Since I've typed this much before I thought of that I'm going to post this anywya and see if anyone can tell me if it's possible to just isync the two machines directly.
Thanks!thanks, I'll definitely give it a shot.
I just plugged in a generic, off brand USB Bluetooth dongle to my G4 (which could be the problem - but that aside) and it works, bluetooth is there and on...BUT.....
when I try and pair my Motorola E-815 it shows me the key to enter but while it is still "gathering" information, the screen then says "this phone has no features avilable to use" or something similar to that. Then if I try to pair it again, it won't recongnize it, unless I power the phone off and back on (the phone, not just bluetooth on the phone) yet it doesn't show up in my devices list.
Any thoughts on what this coule be? Everythign worked fine rigth out of the box on the MacBook.
FWIW - The dongle is supposed to be V2.0 but I think it is V1.2. Any way to tell in the info on my computer?
thanks a ton! -
I am planing to set up a Drobo network drive and three mac work stations with PSCC and BRCC.
Can Bridge run as a network application?
In other words if the source files live in the network drive, when computer A makes a Br collection,
do computers B and C see the same Br collection?
When computer B labels a files do computers A and C see the same label?
When computer C makes a PSCC edit do computer B and C see the updated image preview? You have posted in the Scripting Forum…? This question is better suited to the General Forum…?

Interaction of Bridge and Network drive?
Hi All:
I just put a 1T byte network attached drive in my system and moved all my
photos and rebuilt cache for Bridge on that drive. I did this so I could
access my files from my main computer or laptop on my wireless network. All
seem to work as it should except that since I did this Bridge is crashing
often. There seems to be no pattern. Sometime with in seconds of opening it
will popup a message that it has a problem and needs to close. Other times
I will be in CS3 editing with Bridge idle in the background and it will do
the same thing. Is this a known problem, or am I seeing something new? Ive
not had a big problem with crashes before. It did crash but not very often.
Now its doing every time I use it. Im running XP on both computers with
2gigs of memory in each. The drivers are up to date on both computers. The
network drive is WD world book. This cant be that strange of a thing to do
so Bridge should be able to handle it.
John PassaneauIn most cases I am doing nothing in Bridge when it crashes. More that half
the time Im in Photoshop editing and Bridge is in the background idle and
it goes by by. One thing I notice, when I restart Bridge it comes up in the
folder or task that was were I was the time before it crashed. That is if I
was in directory A, then went to B and while I was in B it cashed. When it
restarts it will be in A, not B like it normally would. As for the drive
speed when I'm on the laptop it's a wireless connection. On the desk top
it's a hard wired connection to the router of about 6' or 2m you choose.
This is a local network and I'm the only user. I can notice the speed
difference when I load or save photos as there is no way a network drive is
as fast as a local drive in a computer.
But then I'm only using the network drive to store files and Bridges cache.
Photoshop and Bridges scratch disk are on local disks in the respective
computers. The desk top scratch disk is on a separate high speed disk which
is shared only with windows scratch file. These are both older computers
but they fast enough to run Photoshop well. My thought is there is some
interaction between the World Book network drive and Bridge but figuring
out what to do about it is going to be tough. A network drive is in essence
a computer/hard drive/network interface in a box. In this one the computer
is running Linux. In fact I can access this drive from anywhere even here
at work through the network. -
N8 Belle and Network Drive mapping.
Hello! Today I tried to move a large video file from my phone to a pc, but I didn't have the USB cable with me and nobody has the mini-usb cable laying around and Bluetooth is way too slow. Then I remembered using the convenient "Map Network Drive" option. I tried looking in the file browser where it was before, but then after googling it I found out that it was removed in Belle.
I hope it's coming back as I remember it to be pretty convenient as wi-fi is pretty fast and I see no reason in removing features with updates.
