Syncing mail between 2 bootup drives

I have one bootup drive for video apps and another for print graphics apps. both disks are available from the other.
Because I spend a good deal of time working from each—sometimes days at a time—I end up with the same incoming mail on both, but I have to deal with the spam twice and open each message twice. Not to mention the fact that "sent" messages from one bootup drive don't appear on the other.
Is there a way to sync them so what I've done with one is reflected in the other?

Mail stores all messages within HOME/Library/Mail/. At the root of this folder there is a subfolder for each mail account. The name of these account folders begins with the account type (e.g. POP, IMAP) and continues with the name of the account as specified in Preferences... > Accounts > Account Information > Description.
So, what I think you're after is:
1. Quit Mail.
2. Move the account folder from HOME/Library/Mail/ to somewhere else.
3. Put an alias to the new location of the account folder in HOME/Library/Mail/ and make sure it has the exact same name the account folder had before.
I haven't tried it, but it might work... until some day you decide that you want to change the name of the account. I have no idea what would happen if you try to do that when the real thing isn't there.
The above is for sharing just one mail account. I you want to share all accounts as well as the messages stored in custom mailbox folders, then you may just move the whole HOME/Library/Mail/ folder and put an alias to that in HOME/Library/. This is probably much easier and less error-prone -- and I haven't tried it either.
And yet one more caveat (this is the second time I edit this post). I wouldn't be surprised if putting the real thing on a different volume confuses Spotlight and searching in Mail doesn't work as expected anymore.

    AFTER I asked the question, then the answer presented itself in a list of previously asked questions!  (And I had looked before too.)  It involves "Signing Out" of iCloud with the iMac, and with the iPhone.  Then I signed in again. It was scary (took a long time) getting the mail loaded again, but it seems to be working now.

    Can anyone help? I own a MacBook Pro, an iMac, an iPhone, and iPad. I have managed to sync mail between the iPhone and the iPad using Microsoft exchange, so that if I delete an e-mail on the phone or the iPad then it is deleted on the other.
    However I can't sync the two computers in the same way, can anyone help and tell me how to sync Mail across all 4 units?
    (I used Exchange because the e-mail account is a Hotmail account and I was told, that's the only way I can do it).

    Microsoft publish the settings needed for Hotmail Imap, they work, use them.
    They are:
    For incoming connections:
    Server address: "imap-mail.outlook.com"
    Server port: "993"
    Encryption type: "SSL"
    For outgoing connections:
    Server address: "smtp-mail.outlook.com"
    Server port: "587"
    Encryption type: "TLS" ("SSL" can be used if TLS is not an option)

    To sync mail between two macs (also with the web browser and iPhone) yo need to set up the email accounts using IMAP. .Mac is automatically set up as IMAP. For gmail account the setup instruction can be found at

    For POP server sync is not possible, you simply can read your email within an email client. Check with your email server, if they offer any IMAP access by any chance.

  • Problem syncing Mail between two computers

    I know this is a well worn topic and I've read the posts on syncing mail between two computers. Overall, I've gotten it to work pretty well. Whenever I move from one computer to another, I copy my ~/Library/Mail folder to my thumbdrive and sync it w/ the same folder on my other computer before I fire up Mail on it.
    But here's the problem: I rebuilt the "sent" mailbox on one of my computers (let's call it computer A). This apparently gives new message numbers to the messages. Things worked great on computer A after that.
    Then I synced the mailbox with my other computer, computer B. On computer B, the change in mailbox numbers apparently was not recognized. Every message in the "sent" folder gave me the message that I needed to go online and download the message. So I rebuilt the "sent" mailbox on computer B. Things then worked great.
    Then I synced back with computer A and the same thing happened. Every message in the sent folder gave me the "download from server message."
    It seems that I'm in some sort of infinite loop. The rebuild on one computer is not recognized by the other computer. Clearly, there is some file somewhere that contains info that's not being conveyed when I sync the ~/Library/Mail folder.
    Any suggestions??

    Problem is, I don't know how to tell the script which version of mail data is older or newer. If you know of such a way let me know and I'll script it in, otherwise the user is stuck with manually choosing what to copy to where.
    And as we all know, any user choices are error-prone.

    I use two Macs and POP accounts. How can I sync Mail.app between two computers in Leopard? The Sync Service of Smart Folders is not enough for me.

    Both my wife and I have multiple macs and work at home and on the road - we've tried all sorts, and there are 3 approaches that work:
    1) IMAP
    I know you think this isn't the ideal solution for you, but it is unbelievably simple and rock solid once you get it working.
    Set your POP mail addresses to forward all mail to your IMAP address (I use .mac which is brilliant, I don't know about Gmail).
    Your mail is server based, so your laptop, desktop, iPhone, webmail from a PC etc. are all always in sync.
    You will still get your mail from your old accounts.
    You can set rules on any of your machines to filter your mail into folders according to which address they were originally sent to.
    HOWEVER the mail you SEND will be FROM your IMAP address, so your clients / friends may get confused if you don't want them to use your IMAP address as your main address.
    2)
    Leave POP mail on the server.
    In Mail preferences, highlight your POP account and click on the "Advanced" tab.
    Select "Remove mail from server" to a 1 day if you come home each night.
    If you are away for longer, make it 1 week or Never.
    This way, if you download mail on your Laptop, when you get home that evening, your desktop will download the same mail again, as it has been left on the server.
    It's sort of fake IMAP.
    The downside is you can end up with a full mailbox at the server very quickly as you are now leaving messages on it, and you may have to empty the server yourself sometimes (in the same menu you just adjusted).
    Also, if you are away from your laptop too long, you may download and later delete-from-the-server messages on your desktop, leaving your laptop out of date.
    Use Mac Sync to keep your rules, mailboxes and preferences synced up.
    This is the way it's designed to work, so it should work fine.
    3)
    Drag the Mail folder.
    Assuming you're only using one Mac at any one time, you simply move the main mail folder to whichever machine is current.
    Quit Mail on both machines.
    On your target mac, go to youruserfolder/Library and rename the "Mail" folder to something else like "Mail Old". This is just so you have a backup.
    On your source mac, go to youruserfolder/Library and copy that entire folder (not just the mailboxes) either to a drive to transfer to your target mac, or straight to it if you have it networked.
    When you start up mail you will find the messages, folders, mailboxes etc. are the same as they were on your source mac.
    Now you use your target mac (say your laptop) for a while.
    When you are going back to your original source mac (e.g. your desktop), you now repeat the process in the other direction, replacing your desktop's mail folder with your newer laptop's version.
    It's really important you use one mac at a time and swap the folder each time you switch.
    If you rename the previous version before you overwrite it, you know you have a backup if things get out of sync.
    It works really well if you only take the laptop out occassionally, or if you use it exclusively for days at a time (i.e you go away) and you only need to do the transfer every so often.
    Also, it helps if you don't have thousands of emails - if your Mail folder is under half a gig, you can do this quickly using a USB keyring or similar. Any bigger and the transfer can get a bit slow.
    I use option 1, and felt it was worth changing my email address for.
    My wife uses option 2 when she is using her laptop in the day and she can run her desktop each evening the download the mail left on the server.
    But she sometimes gets trouble with her popmail server filling up (she gets lots of video and audio attachments) so if she's going away or not planning to use her desktop in the evenings, she reverts to option 3 and removes messages from the server "right away", updating her desktop's mail folder at the end of the week and just using her laptop until then.

    I am new to the Mac world (I am a PC convert) and I now have an iMac and a Macbook for work.
    I have a couple of questions (some of which belong in this group and some elsewhere but I figured someone here could point me in the right direction):
    1. My company's email does not support IMAP, only POP. What is the best way to keep my email clients sync'ed? Ideally I would like my Inbox and all of my folders to be the same on my desktop and laptop and it would be great if it was automated somehow.
    2. What is the best way to handle my iPhone? Should I make my Macbook the "Sync Master" and only sync it to that?
    3. What is the best way to keep my folders and iTunes sync'ed between my iMac and Macbook? Someone suggested Martian Slingshot as the best way to keep them together. Do other people concur?
    Any other advice/experience that people may have on the easiest way to use a Desktop in the office and travel with a sync'ed laptop is appreciated.
    As I mentioned, I am very new to the Mac world. I can't really think of any great way to sync them in the PC World either but I am grateful for your help. I know I should have gotten a Macbook Pro but my boss didn't want to get me one so I am stuck with the hardware I have.

    What I've done with email in the past is set only one of the machines to delete email from the server (if your company allows you that option). But you need to make sure you check with the one that doesn't delete before the other. You may be able to delete manually as well, so don't delete anything from the server until mail has been downloaded to both (I think this can be done in Apple Mail under advanced prefs). But that won't help with tracking replies, etc. And you'll have to manage mailboxes seperately.
    .Mac has a bunch of syncing options, but you may not want to go to that expense.
    Sorry I don't have any advice on the other stuff, only running 1 Mac.

  • Problems with Syncing Mail between iPad and MacBook

    The mail between my iPod Touch and MacBook used to sync themselves perfectly. If I got a piece of mail on one device and looked at it or deleted it, it wouldn't show up on the other device. It was like both devices could access the same mailbox and not confuse messages with one another. I loved that!!
    This is not the case with my iPad. I'll get a piece of mail on my iPad, open it and/or archive it, and then it'll show up on my MacBook's mail as a brand new, unopened message...
    How can I fix this? Surely there must be some sort of solution...
    If it matters, this is a GMail account, and I'm using an iPad 2 (16 GB, WiFi)

    I think i have found how to solve the problem. I went into address book preferences and i noticed i didn't have icloud enabled here. As long as i use icloud contacts rather than 'on my mac' contacts it now seems to delete and add across the 2 devices. Many thanks

    I have 2 computers I use regularly: one is a G4 with Tiger, the other is a Mac Pro with Lion.
    I would like to be able to have my mail on the Lion installation, but will also need to have it on the G4.
    My question is: can I sync the mail from one computer to the other, so that they will both have the same contents, both sent and received..same mailboxes, same rules?
    The idea being that if the Lion Mac is handling mail for a week, the G4 won't have the sent and received mails on it.
    Would I transfer/copy the mailboxes from the Lion Mac to the Tiger Mac, or is there a better way?

    Go to Mail>Preferences>Accounts>Mailbox Behaviour.
    Make sure these 2 boxes are checked on all Macs.

  • Syncing Mail between two computers

    I use both a desktop and a laptop computer and need to sync my work files including my >10GB Mail folder between the two. For the most part I have been able to do this pretty successfully using Chronosync. I have a firewire drive that I plug in and sync the desired files, and this fire wire drive goes back and forth to work. For Mail I backup ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and ~/Library/Mail.
    The problem I'm having with my mail is that every so often the index gets corrupted and then Mail abruptly quits. I'm assuming this is the Envelop Index file stored in the Mail folder, but I'm not totally sure. To rebuild it I have to restart Mail so it can rebuild the Index. That would be fine if that's all it did, but actually it re-imports all my email messages again and now I have duplicate copies. After this happens, I have triplicate and even quadruplicate copies. I'm using a Mail script to remove these duplicates, but this situation is getting out of hand. For example, today it will take ALL DAY to remove the >30,000 duplicates.
    Does anyone know the answers to the following:
    1. Why does the index get corrupted sometimes but not others?
    2. What can I do to keep this file from getting corrupted?
    3. Where are all these email messages that Mail re-imports coming from? I have extensive filters to sort incoming messages; I delete junk; I empty my trash on a regular basis. Why can't the index be created based on the existing folders that have the messages sorted into them? WHy are a bazillion messages being reimported?
    I am currently using POP servers. I played around this morning with IMAP because my employer provides it, but I don't see how this will solve my problem with my local nested storage of messages on my two computers that I wish to sync. And I think that IMAP is going to give me troubles in a short time because my employer only provides 250 MB of storage space. So storing messages on the server really isn't going to be an option for me.
    Any ideas anyone? Right now I'm not syncing to anything mobile other than my laptop, so I don't need any of iphone fixes....

    I'll just update to mention that I just noticed that the "Remove Duplicates" script isn't actually removing all the duplicates. I'm down from 3-4 copies of everyting to just two, and now I need a way to get rid of this one extra duplicate. Anyone know of any other ways to do this?

    Ok, I've been a Mac user for over 8 years but I have to admit I've never really understood how to best organise my Mac Mail.
    I have a Mac Mini and a Macbook Air and I choose to keep all mail in folders "on my mac". Both the Mini and the Air have matching folders.
    I don't tend to store mail in folders in ".Mac"... or .Me (online) as I prefer it stored on my hard drive.
    Problem here is that when I store an email in a folder on say the Mini... it obviously doesn't apperar in the matching folder on the Air. They are not synced as they are store on their individual hard drives.
    My question...... is there a way to sync these two computers and their mail folders? ... or is the only way to save everything to .Mac on both computers and not "on my mac"?
    Isn't there a risk that .Mac could loose all my mail?

    I have Mac Pro and MacBook Pro. I keep all mail on both machines by:
    1. Mac Pro set to leave mail on server for 7 days. MBP set to never delete from server. That means all mail is always downloaded to both machines. You may prefer/need longer or shorter. Having the MBP set to never delete means that if I am away from base, the Mac Pro will still always get all mail.
    2. Out going Mail set on both machines to bcc myself. This means all sent mail gets to both machines whichever machine it was sent from.
    3. Mail rules on each machine put any incoming mail from myself into sent folder. This means all mail I send ends up in the sent folders whichever machine it was sent from.
    Seems to work fairly well. Maintenance has to done on each machine separately, and you have two copies of sent mail on the machine it was sent from.

  • Syncing mail between iMac G5 and Macbook Pro

    I work at home on a G5 and regularly read and then delete or file my emails. I regularly sync between my G5 and Macbook Pro, which I use when traveling. My syncing routine works fine with the address book, calendar, etc., but when I go my Macbook Pro Mail account after syncing, the inbox is still full of mail that I have already read and filed on the G5. Is the syncing routine designed to replicate the mail accounts or do I need to reread, delete, and file the emails on the Macbook as well.
    PS: I am using email accounts with cox.net, i.e., not mac.com accounts.

    The underlying issue here is that you have chosen to use POP3 rather than IMAP mail accounts. Only IMAP mailboxes are 'synchronized' by default: it is virtually impossible to synchronize POP3 mailbox content.

    I am running 2 macs. I have one problem...is there any way that I can have my mail sync on both computers without .mac ... It can be quite a pain having to check then delete the mail on one computer, and then come on my other computer and have to delete all the same messages. Again, I would not like to have to subscribe to .mac ... I know it is a great program from mac, but the fees can be a pain, so if there is any way to do this, I would thank you!!!!

    With .Mac mail, it allows you to run it as a IMAP mail, which stores everything on the mail server.
    That is the kind of mail you probably looking for, to "sync" between two or more macs, you basically access your entire mail account, which is on a mail server, via an email program like Mail or Entourage.
    So if you do not wish to subscribe to .Mac, then you would have to look for another mail account, that supports IMAP.
    Incidently, if you are looking for a free email account, and don't mind accessing it fromt the web, (i.e. web-based mail) then there are a lot for you to choose from: GMail, Yahoo Mail and Hotmail

    Not possible to sync both inboxes. E-mails open on one device do not appear as such on the other. Appropriate buttons in the i-cloud preference menu are "ON", but no impact on mail. Calendar and contacts syn ok, notes do not.

    POP will download it to your computer and typically removes it from the server after download.
    IMAP pulls from the cloud and by putting both Macs on IMAP they will all stay in sync.
    The Mail application can handle any number of POP and IMAP accounts as you'd like. Obviously, you cannot have one account as both POP and IMAP at the same time on the same Mac.
