Syncing MBP and G5

So I just got a shiny new MBP and am very pleased. I have a networking question, though. I'd really like to find out what the easiest way, without a .Mac account, is to synchronize certain files and folders on my G5 with my new MBP. I'll be switching back and forth between the 2 machines quite a bit and want to keep everything in order as best I can.
Some of the stuff I want to keep current are a few work folders I have, the stuff in my Mail (not a .mac address), iPhoto stuff and so and so forth. What are the different ways that I can do this? Is Sharing something I should investigate? I want these 2 machines to work together in harmony, but I'll be the first to admit that I'm a bit of network know-nothing.
I do have a wireless network set up in my house using a Netgear wireless router.
Thanks in advance!
Brent

Hey TM,
I simply have Sharing turned on on each machine and my MBP can find my G5, see all it's files and vice versa. It's actually pretty slick. It's not a true synching solution, but it does what I need it to do. I can access a file on my G5, work on it on my laptop and save it right back to where it belongs on the G5, making that the master location for all of my work files. It's really pretty easy and super awesome.

  • Sync stickies on MBP and MacPro and iPhone?

i have finally settled on using notational velocity (which i love) to sync data between my MBP and my MacPro and simplenote to get these to my iPhone.
can i sync stickies between all three of these device? right now these only exist on my macbookpro and this is a big pain.
new user so thanks for any help with this topic as i get the final sort going.

It's either the connection from the laptop to icloud or from icloud to iphone that's the problem.  To find the answer, do the following...
Using a computer's browser log into icloud.com and then look at the contacts page.  If the edits show up there, then the problem is from icloud to iphone.  If edits are not there, then the problem is from laptop to icloud.
Whichever device the problem points to, verify that it is logged into the right icloud account and that Contacts is turned on.  (System preferences>icloud on mac or Settings>icloud on ios device.

  • Syncing Mbp itunes and iphone

Why does iTunes in MBP show 1124 songs and iPhone 6 show 1135 songs. They should be the same after sync. Surely sync means what is on iPhone should be on MBP, and vice versa?????

With Mavericks you sync via iCloud or you can try the below.

  • Moving Library to New MBP and restored iPhone

Shortly after I acquired a new MacBook Pro, I had to restore my iPhone 3G and lost all of the media stored on the phone. What is the easiest way to copy my iTunes library from my PC to both the MBP and iPhone. First inclination is to 1) sync the iPhone with the PC to get the music on it, then 2) sync the iPhone with iTunes on the MBP.
    Does that sound doable?

  • Help with new MBP and iTunes

I need some help fast. I bought my wife a new MBP and in setting everything up we inadvertently setup a new and wrong iTunes account. We haven't transferred anything yet, I want to get this account off her computer before I bring everything from her Win 7 machine.
Can't find any specific instructions, can somebody help me out?
    Thanks!
    Mark

It's late so this will be rather short:
    1.  Make sure you update the older version of iTunes to the latest version
    2.  Go into iTunes Settings and Authorize iTunes with your Apple ID and Password
    3.  In settings, turn off Automatice sync
    4.  Connect your iPad and once recognized, right click the device from the left side of the the iTunes screen
    5.  Transfer purchases
    6.  You can then sync
A lot to digest and I don't have the time to walk you through every step.  If you need to, google the points and you'll find lot's of information on where to find these in iTunes.

  • Brand new MBP and the user directory is corrupt?

hi, i just installd my new MBP and did a sync of my G5 settings (all except bookmarks) added a few things to my desktop and when i rebooted the desktop was cleared and the home directory was missing "Movies" "Music" "Pictures" in the left most column. all that is left is "Applications" and my user home symbol.
i tried to create a new user and when i did so was given a message that the "home" folder could not be located. weird.
anyway. i also installed a canon IP4300 driver. can anyone tell me what may be going on? do i need to erase the drive and do a fresh install?
UPDATE: i see what happened! the User directory somehow got into the Applications folder! no idea how. but i can't seem to get it out. can anyone help me out?
    thx

Open the Applications folder and drag the Users folder inside to the top level of the hard disk; you may need to press the Command key when dragging the item and/or provide an administrator username and password. When done, log out and back in. If only the home folder is present in the Applications folder, move it to the Users folder. Rename existing items as needed.

  • How can I safely transfer my 125GB of itunes music files to free up space, but still keep itunes on my MBP, and access the music with the cloud and match?

I have already backed up all the itunes files on two different external drives. And I have already set up icloud and itunes match. I am still paranoid about deleting the files from my MBP, but I need to free the space. What steps should I take to delete the files. And can I still keep itunes (w/o all the music files) on my laptop and access the music from the cloud? I know I can run them with the external drive plugged in, but looking for a way to do it w/o pluggin in.

I have tried that as well.  The purchased songs are not in my playlists and they are still there.  I manually deleted them on the phone but the sync puts them right back on there.
I only sync playlists and they aren't on there.

  • I joined iTunes Match on my MBP and added our MBA to the same Match account. What should the iTunes Media Folder Location be for iTunes on the MBA?

The iTunes libraries on both machines appear to be in sync, though I don't know if Home Sharing or iTunes Match is to thank for the consistency. But the iTunes Media Folder locations are different on the MBP and MBA, and I don't know if they should point to the same storage location (it's been on a drive connected to our Airport for years). I also don't know what options for Copying Files and Keeping iTunes Organized should be on the MBA. I certainly don't want the media files duplicated yet the devices sharing a cloud version.
I hoped the MBA would act like an iOS device using iTunes Match in that music would stream unless downloaded. Then downloaded music would have to be managed (deleted from the MBA's iTunes) for space reasons at some regular intervals-- just like we now do on the iPhones and iPad. The library entry for the song would remain... just the locally stored file would be deleted and the iCloud download would change back to the download symbol.
But if a purchase is made from the iTunes store on the MBA, the file is stored on the local MBA machine as well as the external drive because the MBP receives the song via Home Sharing and downloads the file.

Each iTunes client will expect a discrete iTunes library location.  The iTunes Match service will allow the libraries to be automatically synchronised along with any IOS devices that are also registered for iTunes Match.
Following making a secure backup for any given library it is possible, once Songs have been 'matched' or 'uploaded' to remove the local copies and play the Songs from the Cloud.  The behaviour on IOS devices is different, they will download each Song as it is played.
Note:  Apple is very clear that the responsibility for maintaining music files remains with the user - so it remains essential to ensure that you have your own Songs secure backed up prior to relying on the Cloud.  Should there be an issue with the Cloud resulting in loss of Songs you will need your own secure backup.

  • Sync MBP with external HD

    Hi all,
I'm looking at a MBP. Since disk space is at a premium I plan to keep my music library on an external HD. When travelling though, I'd like to take a selection of music (a smart playlist) with me on the MBP.
Is it possible to sync a playlist to an MBP like I'd sync a playlist to my iPod?
    Steve

Ya I understand what you would like to do, but I don't think it is possible. So while the external can be permanently the main computer's iTunes library drive, you can hook up the external temporarily to the MacBook Pro, tell iTunes to ADD which every folders or songs you want, they will be copied into the MBP and the external left unmodified, then put the external back on the main computer.
Unfortunately there really isn't another way that I can think of to do it.

  • Please Help - sync MBP to MacPro ?

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro and a Mac Pro (see profile for full details). I'm new to having a laptop AND a desktop... whenever I go on trips I need to use the laptop but then come back and use desktop. Ideally, a good idea, but...
What I'm missing is how to sync the files??
I have files on MacPro not on MBP and files on MBP not on MacPro. It's becoming a mess. Right now I'm doing transfers manually and it's horrible! Esp. cuz I have to transfer all from one comp to an external drive and then onto the other computer. Time wasting!
There must be an easier way?
Plus, the real issue is _I don't want to sync all files_. Just essential ones. Main big file system stays on Mac Pro, smaller travel needed files need to be on MBP.
    Please help?
Also, I have a major initial problem yet to be resolved, I posted here: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10625174#10625174
No one has answered it still! (Did I post in wrong section?) Hence reason why I cannot leave out the 'external drive' part because all files when I transferred came up with MINUS signs and I can't access them (unless I copy them THREE times to THREE different locations - makes NO sense to me!!)
Thank you so much in advance for anyone who helps! I'm really frustrated and want all to work ASAP!

Thanks AW - I might try to redo as per your advice, but when you say clean install, you mean to literally wipe the whole drive and reinstall the operating system? At this point, I'm not sure it's the best thing since there's only a limited number of files I need within the 'minus' folders. My main working folders transferred ok since I pulled them from the external fw drive.
The problem still would stand though, as to how I sync files after I use migration utility, if I try it again. Is migration utility supposed to be used every time I sync? I thought it was just for my initial set up.
Fortuny - I have heard of ChronoSync and had been planning on looking into it for backups. I didn't know it could be used to sync laptop to desktop though...
Can I use ChronoSync to sync user files? I am wondering if I could just avoid the migration utility all together and use this ChronoSync instead and not get all these weird permission issues... Maybe?

  • Art work for some album are misplaced in my MBP and also iPhone5

Artwork for some albums are misplaced in my MBP and also iPhone. What should I do to correct this?

    Hey there vtec99,
It sounds like you are syncing photos from iPhoto on your computer but not all the photos you set to sync are actually coming over, and they are disorganized. Based on what you are describing, I would recommend deleting the iPod Photo cache which stores picture information that iTunes uses to sync photos from your iPhoto library. The following article will help you do that:
iTunes: Understanding the iPod Photo Cache folder
When you use iTunes to sync photos to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod, iTunes creates a folder called iPod Photo Cache. The iPod Photo Cache stores photos that are optimized for display on your device. The location of this folder depends on the syncing options you select. In iTunes, if you change the selection in the Sync Photos From menu, a new iPod Photo Cache folder will be created (and the previous folder will remain).
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • THREE different counts of CONTACTS (iCloud, iPhone, MBP and MacPro)

i had thought that i extricated myself from the morass that was MM but now find myself with non-synced contacts on all three of my devices with the only device showing the same number of contacts as iCloud being my Mac Pro.
this means that i have THREE different counts for the number of contacts in my various devices and it is basically impossible for me to remember what was entered on which device and when.
is there some way out of this?
is iCloud Contact sync as unreliable as my MM contact sync or am i just doing something extremely stupid?
    TIA
    Jon

    hi csound.
i am on 6.1 on the iphone and i only see "All Contacts" i don't see any iCloud account listed. also, while i am on Lion on the Mac Pro and Mountain Lion on the MBP and i know there may be some differences in these two as it pertains to iCloud, i am currently doing an /extended/ troubleshoot of this with advanced mac technical on the phone. there appears to be some issue with iCloud where syncing does not occur or somehow is forced to occur (as in turning off a sync in Settings > ICloud), closing settings and then re-opening settings and having the option magically checked again.
i've done this kind of misery in MM and i am hoping to get is solved here soon.
in the meantime there also appears to be a problem getting my Notes back to sycing so i have simply moved these to notational velocity for at least the time being.
with the laptop i have and these sync issues i can't take much more i am afraid and will have to figure out a way to intelligently minimize the time i spend on this kind of thing.
i can't even get a capture data to complete on the laptop so they can send the issue to the developers...

  • Airport Express with a MBP and a Mini Mac

    Hey Apple Community.
Im think about buying a Mini Mac, witch i would use as my main entertainmentcenter, connected to my livingroom TV and my TV in the kitchen.
But i have some questions before buying a Mini Mac.
1# Its it possible to use AirPlay from the Mini Mac on the same Airport Express, that i use with my MBP to hear music over AirPlay....? And if both of them are turned on, will i be able to control iTunes from both of them. Meaning being able to fx. change music number from one to another number, if i move from the office, where i have my MBP to the kitchen, where i would like to have a screen, wireless mouse and wireless keyboard, connected to the Mini Mac.
2# Is it possible to share the same iTunes libary on both my MBP and the Mini Mac...?
3# Is it possible to synch data between the two, so they are identical in setup and in data..?
"so when i change something on either my MBP or the Mini, it also changes on the other one, through the wireless connection"
So all in all, i would like my MBP and the Mini to act as one "unite", when the both of them are turned on.
    Is this possible...?
I would really apreciate any help i could get on this issue.

    Thanks Gino, that really helped.
The main thing for me is to be able to control iTunes from both Macs, like starting a music number on my MBP in the office and then switching number in the kitchen with the Mini. I can always manually move the media files from one to the other Mac, when thats nessesary.
And since the Mini mainly will be used for entatainment, then it issint very importent that they are identical in every way.......just thought i could be cool if it was possible.
This: "You can however use an iCloud account to sync data such as calendar and address book and a mail account using the IMAP protocol will also be synced across both computers. iCloud mail accounts use IMAP as well as Google Mail and some others."
Is really great news, since i then will be able to acces these things in the livingroom as well, not having to open up my MBP in the office every time i want to check a mail or calender thingy.
"The only other way to get them to act close to being one computer is to install a Mac OS X server and use a network Home folder. That way both computers access the same home folder that is stored on the server and changes performed on one computer will be reflected on the other when the other logs in."
When you say "install a Mac OS X server" do you mean getting that Mac Mini with Lion Server..? Or do you mean i shall install a server program on the "normal" Mini, so it acts as a server...?
If its the last one.....will i then be able to use it as a "normal" Mac, surfing and stuff...while it acts like a server..?
    Again...really, really apriciate your help.

  • Can you sync iTunes and photos from AppleTV back to iTunes? HD Crash

I recently had a major HD crash on my MBP and I installed a new HD + Leopard. I have my iTunes library and photos on my AppleTV and I was hoping when I sync iTunes on my MBP with AppleTV that I can get my libary back into iTunes.
Is this possible in some settings trick?
(I'm currently trying DataRescueII to recover files that I hadn't backupped recently including recently purchased iTunes songs).

Unfortunately it isn't that simple, don't try syncing now, leave it disconnected until you know what you want to do. There are ways to recover the date yourself which involve taking the unit apart or other potentially difficult routines. If you are at all in any doubt about doing anything like this and the data on the tv is valuable to you, you might consider taking it to a data recovery specialist that has experience with  equipment.

  • "Templates" on Dropbox (for MBP and MacPro)

I am using MobileMe to sync Bookmarks, Contacts and  and I am storing some software data here so that it is available to /both/ my MBP and MacPro.
Can I do this for settings that I change for something like Pages or Numbers?
Is there other data to backup and/or share in this manner to streamline things?
    Thanks.

    OK. thank you.
if i am not mistaken Mountain Lion will not let me have the Mac Pro show up in this utility because it just doesn't support it so wired or not wired is not an issue it is just the OS i think.
also, for some very weird reason i was able to access the MBP from the iPhone App and then the MBP showed up on the Mac Pro in me.com.
i will try and check this again and post back if it is an issue again.
    THANKS randers
