Syncing metadata across devices using the Cloud

I decided to authorize my work computer for iTunes Match. My main library is on my home computer. Once I saw all my music in the cloud on my work computer, I decided to do a little tweaking of the metadata. I didn't download the songs first, just changed the metadata. When I updated Match, the metadata went back to the way it was before. Do I need to download the songs to the local machine first before metadata changes will stick and sync to other devices? Or can I only make metadata changes on the home library?

Metadata changes (which can only be made from iTunes) are reflected immedietely on other Match-enabled iTunes libraries, but cause duplicates to be created on iOS devices.
For example, I changed the genre of song after it had been matched. It now appears under the old genre and the new one. I deleted the song from iTunes and iCloud, which removed it from my iPhone. However, when I added the song back in to iTunes and uploaded it to iCloud the duplicates appeared on my iPhone once again.
It's as if iCloud keeps a copy of every version of every song we match/upload just like Photo Stream. I just wish there was a Reset iTunes Match button.
Apple really needs to fix these bugs if they're going to take money from people and not extend ther subscription.

    Hey Janice Lucoff,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like you are experiencing issues backing up your iPhone 4s in iTunes, which is causing issues finishing the sync of your device. The following resource should help resolve your issue, as it refers to the exact error message you described:

  • HT1386 I am trying to sync my iPad with my phone. I don't have a Mac so I can't use the above info. How do I sync iPhone and iPad using the cloud?

Syncing my iPad with my iPhone via wifi

It depends on what you mean by "sync the iPad with the iPhone". Technically, you can't sync the devices like you would sync with a computer anyway, so you can't think that way. You can keep the two devices in sync, but if you want two devices with identical content on them, you have to restore one device from the backup of the other device for starters.
After  that, you would have to download the same apps on the one device that you have on the other device, download all of the same songs, movies, TV shows, podcasts, and so on. The you would have have iCloud enabled on both devices in order to keep app data in sync, if the apps work with iCloud. So enable iCloud on bit devices and go to Settings>iCloud and turn on all of the items in there...mail, notes, reminders, Safari, calendar, photo stream, contacts, documents and data, etc.
You would also have to turn on automatic downloads in Settings> iTunes & App Store>Automatic Downloads> on for songs, apps and books so that whatever you download on one device downloads to the other device.
If you have any apps that do not work with iCloud for the purposes of syncing app data, it will be impossible to keep the two devices identical total in content.

  • Domain joined Windows 8.1 using OneDrive to sync passwords across devices

Background : Domain joined Windows 8.1 devices using OneDrive to sync settings across devices, including "Passwords" under Other Settings. Domain user accounts are NOT local administrators.
Issue : When one drive goes to sync Wireless network security settings (passphrases etc...), a User Account Control (UAC) dialogue pops up from "Program Name : Networks" to enter administrator credentials. Domain users do not have administrator access
to local computers by strict policy.
The only way identified so far to stop the dialogue pop-up is to disable the password sync by group policy. However, that turns off ALL password syncing, including passwords desired to be sync'd, that do not encounter this issue.
Can the UAC be suppressed? Is there a way to NOT sync the wireless password settings?
Welcome any thoughts, direction, assistance, etc... :) Thanks much and have a good day!

    Hi,
I searched around but haven't find one way to achieve this, thus I'm afraid that we're unable to prevent the specific network password setting. the syncing settings for all passwords are combined together.
To suppress UAC, we can turn off the UAC under control panel\User Account or via GP  Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options ,but we don't recommend this.

  • HT4910 I have 5 apple devices that are using the cloud.  Do i need to have ALL of the devices backing up to the cloud since they are all on the same USER LOGIN or do i just need to buy more space?

I have multiple aple devices ( Ipad2, Ipad3, Iphone 4, Iphone 4s, Mac Mini, and Apple TV)  I am using the same apple login to sync to the cloud.  My question is do I need to sync ALL of them to the cloud or just one of the devices since I have them set up to sync anyway, or do i just need to buy more cloud space.  Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You should sync all of them, if you want them all to share the same information.
Syncing is not the same as backing up. I suggest you continue to back up your mobile devices to your computer, unless you have a good reason to do otherwise.

  • HT4864 Do I need to use Outlook as my email programme instead of Outlook Express if I want to use The Cloud to sync between PC and iPad? Can I transfer my contacts, emails and diary appontments from Outlook Express to Outlook?

Do I need to use Outlook as my email programme instead of Outlook Express if I want to use The Cloud to sync between PC and iPad? Can I transfer my existing contacts, emails and diary appointments from Outlook Express to Outlook? What is cheapest way to aquire Outlook?

iCloud only "syncs" data in the iCloud account, not data in other external accounts such as Gmail, Yahoo, etc.  If your email, contacts and calendars are hosted by another external account, such as Gmail/Google, you may want to not sync this data using iCloud as you would have import it all to the iCloud account in order to do so.  Instead, add your external account to your iOS devices and in Settings>Mail,Conacts,Calendars>Add Account and turn on contacts and calendar syncing with your external account.

With the exception of photo stream, iCloud doesn't sync your apps or photos between devices. You will continue to sync this content via iTunes in the same way as you do now.
Photo stream allows you to sync your most recent photos between all devices, you have the option to use photostream or not.

  • I just bought a brand new iPhone 4s from a Three store. When I used the cloud restore to put the data from my old 3gs onto the device, it's prompting me for an Apple ID login with an email address that isn't mine!

I just got a brand new iPhone 4S on a contract from my local Three store. When I used the cloud restore to put the data from my old 3GS onto the device, it's prompting me for an Apple ID login with an email address (hotmail) that isn't mine! My old phone has NEVER had any Apple ID other than mine log into it, and the new one's a sealed box that I've opened and set up from scratch. Can anyone please explain this? I'm worried there's some kind of problem with my iCloud data being mixed with someone else's or something... Since I logged in with my own ID, it's downloaded the data perfectly fine, but I just got the Apple ID prompt again a moment ago with this same hotmail address in it... I'd be very grateful for any explanation!

In iTunes on your computer, select the Purchased section under STORE in the left column. Click on the first track and choose "Get Info" from the "File" menu.
In the "Summary" tab you'll see details of the purchaser of the track. Click Next to go through all your purchased music one by one until you find the ones you need to get rid of.
Unfortunately, there are no smart playlist rules that can filter tracks by the purchaser that I know of.

  • Can two Palm devices use the same Hot Sync ID?

Can two Palm devices share the same Hot Sync ID using the same desktop? I presently owe a Treo 700p with a lot of purchased software. I'm considering buying a Palm TX handheld and would like to use both devices using the same Hot Sync ID. Is this possible and should there be any synchronization issues if they are syncing to the same desktop?

You will be assured of unpredictable device behavior, random crashes, spontaneous resets, and other delights described in one of the boxes in the Read This First flyer if you sync two very different device models (phone vs. PDA, different screen sizes, etc.) to the same Hotsync ID on the same computer.
This can be done but you will have to treat each sync as an Upgrade, rename the Backup folder, and reinstall third-party applications, reset your preferences, basically the entire process involving multiple syncs every time you sync. I don't think the headache involved is worth it.
Suggest you decide which third-party apps you want on your second device and get an additional licence and registration from the developers.

  • In mountain lion must you use the cloud?

I am reading different things about mountian lion and the cloud.
Do oyu have to use the cloud for things?
Can you opt out of using the cloud?

It's your choice to use iCloud or not. If you have more than one Apple device, why wouldn't you use the features that benefit you. You can choose the features you want turned on. You can keep you address book synced between devices, calendars, bookmarks, messages, or PhotoStream. You can use .me email either with or without iCloud, but it's a very simple setup using iCloud by simply turning it on.
What you want to use is your choice. Take advantage of the features that you can use.
