Syncing multiple macs

Hi
I do have 5 computers running Leopard with all the same accounts and running all TimeMachine but for different purposes. However, I wish I can synchronize all the ~/Documents directories, using a remote repository such as some wifi hard disk (like Timecapsule), because this directory is always altered and I wish to work with it up to date on any computer. How to ?
Since all computers have the same accounts, is it also possible to sync the keychains user per user ?
Thanks for you answers

Hi Jérôme, have you found a way?
When I find some time I'll try a setup with Carbon Copy Cloner and maybe an automated folder script?

  • Sync multiple Macs to 1 iWebsite

I use Automator to sync my Powerbook and iMac projects (amounst many other things) through my iPod and just thought I'd let everyone know how it's done in case you'd like to use the technique to keep your iWeb projects synced between two or more Macs....
    1. Open Automator and open a new project then in the Library column click on the Finder button then Double-click on the Action "Get Specified Finder Items"
    2. Click on the plus icon located at the bottom-left of the "Get Specified Finder Items" window and in the pop-up window navigate to your "Domain" file located at ~User Name/Library/Application Support/iWeb once you've highlighted your "Domain" File click the Open button.
    3. Double-click on the Action "Copy Finder Items" in Automator.
    4. In the "Copy Finder Items" window that appears click on the "To:" bar and navigate to the syncing device you'd like to copy your domain file to (be it a flashdrive, iPod, iDisk, etc.) then click the "Replace Existing Files" option.
    5. Now you have a workflow set-up that will find your domain file and copy it to a specific place so save it as a Plug-in for Finder so that way when you're in the Finder you can right-click (or Control-Click) and scroll down to Automator then click on your workflow and it'll do it all automatically!
    - Just set-up ANOTHER workflow pretty much the same as the first workflow that takes the updated "Domain" file from your source (be it ipod, Flashdrive, iDisk, etc.) and copies it back to the other computers' iWeb folder (User Name/ Library/ Application Support/ iWeb)
I name one workflow Copy 2 iPod and the other Copy 2 Mac and pretty much what I do is when I'm done using one of my Macs I run the Copy 2 iPod Workflow then when I first get on my other Mac I run the Copy 2 Mac Workflow and all my stuff is synced up... much easier then having to manually find all my specific files every time and then have to manually replace all those files everytime I get on my other Mac....
I'm kinda GLAD iWeb saves its files the way it does 'cause it's forced me to explore Automator as a syncing alternative and it's not only been sucessful in its original intent which was to sync my iWeb projects between multiple Macs but it has made syncing of ALL my files via my iPod very simple.
If you haven't checked out Automator for your iWeb syncing needs you really should. I mean, that's part of what makes Tiger the best OS there is!
    1.8 gig "20 iMAC G5, 60 ipod video, 1.5 gig "17 Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   1 Gig RAM - iMac 512 MB RAM - Powerbook Airport Express

If you think Automator is great, you should look into AppleScript. After all, Automator is a dumbed-down version of AppleScript
    http://www.apple.com/applescript/folderactions/
AppleScript has something called 'Folder Actions', which can be used to detect your iPod. And if you do it correctly, you don't even have to do anything but plug in your iPod, and AppleScript does its magic.

  • Will Time Capsule sync multiple Macs?

I have a MacBook Pro laptop.  I back up to a Lacie Time Machine 1TB with Firewire.  I want to buy a new iMac and wireless Time Capsule.  I want my iMac and MacBook Pro (both will have Lion OS) to hold the same files and Apps and for these to be updated on both machines as I go. I want them continuously synced. Can I do this?  How would I go about setting this up given my current and new hardware?  What sequence should I follow to accomplish this?

  • One Apple ID on multiple macs to use for iCloud?

We have one "business" apple ID for multiple macs in my office for ease of purchasing. Now, we'd like to use the same apple ID to sync our data via iCloud. I was wondering if it would create conflict if we only used one apple ID to sync multiple macs and would it create conflict with iCloud?

I don't believe there would be any conflicts. I'm not sure whether you intended sharing your contacts or some of your contacts between you but you can do either (indeed you don't need to share contacts if you don't want).

  • How do i sync iphone with multiple macs? and few questions

    Hi
I would appreciate if anyone would help me.
    1. I would like to know how to sync my iphone with different macs. I have a macbook 13 and a macbook 15 and would like to use BOTH to be able to transfer data without losing them. (address, apps, photos and music)
would like to use this feature if I were to be suddenly on a trip and a friend would like to share some of his files (audio, apps, photos..etc)
    2. is it possible to use internet tethering on multiple macs or example a "spontanious" mac? (ex. if I were suddenly to use internet through usb on a friends mac while we were on a trip but it were programmed on my mac at home)
    3. my internet tethering is only working on one mac which I usually use to sync everything... i tried just using tethering through usb on the other mac wihtout any sync but somehow it didnt work... usually i just plug and play and start using firefox... by automatic detection...
    4. is there also a way to copy files from iphone onto a mac which would not be one of my libraries?
    5. why cant i use iphone like the ipod as a disk use?
I am aware that these things are somewhat possible because i have read quiet a few artivles but they are sadly enough not so current... any help appreciated.

#1: As has been said, you can't get around it. An iPhone cannot be synched to more than one computer for any media content (it can be for contacts and calendar information, I believe).
#4: You can transfer items purchased from the iTunes Store to another computer but only if you disallow synchronization and authorize that computer to your iTunes Store account. There are third-party utilities that can transfer non-iTunes Store content.
#5: there is no disk mode in an iPhone and no way to enable one, at least not in the sense of disk mode in earlier iPods. There are third-party apps that allow some file transfer to and from an iPhone.
I can't help with tethering questions.

  • Sync multiple icloud accounts to mac

Can I sync multiple icloud accounts to a mac

You can add additional iCloud accouts to your Mac as secondary accounts by going to System Preferences>Internet Accounts (Mail,Contacts,Calendars)>iCloud and entering your credentials.  Secondary accounts will only sync mail, contacts, calendars, reminders and notes.
Additionally, you can sign into different iCoud accounts in different user accounts.

  • Syncing safari tabs across multiple macs

I have a Mac Mini as my primary mac and a MBA as my "leisure" Mac. I thought with syncing that all my Safari tabs would be the same in both, like is done well with Mail, Contacts, and Calendar. However, I've just changed my Mini Safari tabs, and I went to my MBA expecting to see the same framework, and it has not updated. What do I need to do to sync across multiple macs?

The tabs are not synced, just the bookmarks. Tabs are not data or content, just a window frame for different URLs.

  • How to sync Address Book with multiple macs

What are the methods for having 1 address book and having them synced over multiple macs.
    I have:
    - 1 iMac (24 inch)
    - 1 Powerbook
    - 1 iMac (dome)
    - 1 iPhone
I'm using all of them (sounds weird, eh?) and I want to be able to have them synced automatically. One update on my iPhone reflects the other Address books.
    Cheers!

Agreed, $99 a year seems like a bit much if that's all you want to do.
If you trust web-based free email services like Gmail, you can export your Address Book(s) and those on other platforms and manage it from there.
Downside is that there is apparently NOT an 'export' back at the present time if you decide to change.
So, for now I use MobileMe for the convenience, because $99 a year is easier than wading through three or four different programs and operating systems on multiple platforms.

  • Syncing contacts over multiple macs

I'm linking up multiple macs and one iphone and syncing through icloud. the calendars work. but the contacts are not syncing. the laptop has old contacts that i need to update to the main computer contacts.
Any ideas on what I'm not doing or why they are not syncing?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
This user tip might help you understand how accounts work with Contacts (Address Book).
First check that all your settings are correct, that contact syncing is checked on all devices (system preferences > iCloud on a mac and settings > iCloud on a iPhone, iPad or iPod).
Make sure the contacts you are adding are added to your 'iCloud' group and not an 'On My Mac', 'On My Phone' or other non iCloud group (you can do this by checking in groups), non iCloud contacts will not sync.
If you are sure that everything is set up correctly and your contacts are in the iCloud group, you might try unchecking contact syncing in the iCloud settings, restarting your device and then re-enabling contact syncing.

  • Sync iCal with multiple Mac systems - How to ?

I have created a system over the years that finally worked for me using my Palm. I use missing sync and will sync my iCal at my office Mac and also at my home Mac. This way if over the weekend or anywhere else in-between my schedule changes, everything gets updated.
It also helps that I use .Mac to sync everthing in-between the computers as well.
So... I am now taking the plung into the iPhone... but I want to set this up correctly.
I cannot only sync my schedule at work OR home. Too much changes throughout the week for me. I also rely on syncing things on Sunday evening and then using .Mac to publish it around to various people (I am using the Mac technology as it was intented to be used!)
Since it appears that syncing is only acheived via iTunes and not using iSync, how can I acheive this?
Or could I use iSync via Bluetooth???
The ONLY thing I really need to sync on the work computer is the iCal ...everything else can sync at the home computer (well I would like to sync other items from time to time, but I can live with this solution if I have to!)
I am also concerned reading here what appears to tell me that I can only have one calendar... again I am a busy person who receives .Mac feeds with other people's iCals and sometimes has them sync and I currently have them sync to my Palm lifedrive (all color coded to clarify).
I really hope that going "all Mac" will be easier and simler than the cobbled together mess that I finally created over the years with the Palm with my macs. My wife and I finally know what each other's schedule is!
    any thoughts?
    thanks
    Rich

I see what you are saying and understand how allowing .mac to update the other computers will work.
But what will update the iPhone until I reach the office computer (say I sync at the offic, I just updated things on the home computer, synced via .mac so things are OK for the computers, and it is the Friday evening... )
I will have a couple of days of outdated schedule in my pocket until Monday.
I want to keep a current iCal on my iPhone.
    Is this possible?
    Rich

  • Same Account on Multiple Macs?

I am setting up a new Mac Mini to be used primarily as the "accounting computer". But it will also serve as a backup computer for the 3 users on my main Mac Pro when multiple users want on at the same time. So how do I handle the set-up of the new Mini? Should I create 3 identical users, with their same login names & passwords, on the 2nd Mac? i.e. So when I need to get on to check email, but my main puter is in use by another user, I can jump on the Mini & have updated access to my email??? Secondly, how do I keep Mail, Calendar, etc in sync on both machines?

    jdehnert wrote:
My best suggestion would be to set your people up on one of the computers and have then share their home directories with password protection. You may want to do this on whichever system has more hard drive space. Then set them up again on the alternate system and make sure that they can connect to the main system to access their home directories. If you can train and/or convince your users to keep all of their files on the home directory space that resides on the main system, it could work.
This is more along the lines of what I had in mind. The use on the alt computer will only be to do a quick email check... I am in the process of setting all email accounts up as IMAPs... or internet surfing, etc. Any tasks that involve files from the main box will have to be accessed through sharing, then saved back to their account on that main puter... and this will be on occasion at most. And now that I've said all this, I can think of several instances where I've needed to interrupt someone because I needed to check my calendar... have yet to use iSync - does something like this allow me to sync my iCal to another computer?
So how should I handle the users on the 2nd Mac? Should I set up all the accounts there too... even if it might be for occasional use? And if I'm setting up individual accts, can I set up accts with the same login names & PW's on multiple Macs that are networked, without issue?
It just dawned on me that if someone is surfing the internet on the alt box, they might need their favs over there... although I'm the only user w/an extensive favs list. Truth be told, my network is a home business network. So far, the only other users on the main Mac are my kids... the network serves for home biz/personal tasks. One of my kids is a college student who uses the computer for all basic tasks plus web design & Photoshopping. Point is, I'm just looking for the best, simple solution.

  • How do I sync multiple iPones on the same iMac

How do I sync multiple iPones on the same iMac

Use another account where?  Let's say phone A is being synced to Mac A, and now you want to add phones B and C to Mac A, then they will all be syncing using the same account, the one used on Mac A.  Phones B and C can share apps and songs currently on Mac A's iTunes, but they will lose any apps, etc. that were previously put on them from other macs that use different accounts.  That's the way it works. If you want to keep the apps on B and C, then keep syncing them to their original macs.

  • Syncing multiple iPhones/iPads/iPods for different users via WiFi on a single computer?

So my wife and I each have an iPhone running iOS 7.0.3 (11B511), she has an iPad (iOS 7, but unsure of the exact release), and my son has an iPod (also iOS 7, but unsure of the exact release).  I've also have a Mac mini running Mac OS X 10.9 (13A603) with Server 3.0 (13S440) and iTunes 11.1.3 (8) 64-bit.  I'd like us each to be able to sync any of our devices via WiFi when we're at home.  We each have accounts on the server with thier own iTunes Libraries and associated with thier own iTunes Store accounts.
I've seen posts that explain how to sync multiple devices to a single account with a single library, and I've seen posts that explain how to sync different devices to different libraries under different users when each is the only user running iTunes at the time.  Is there a way to allow each user to sync whenever they please without having to have the other users log out of iTunes, log themselves in, and then sync?
It sounds like, from what I've learned so far, that multiple users running iTues is not (or at least used to not) be enough to make this work.  I'm looking for a definitive answer here though, not a guess that it can't be done based on previous versions or speculation.  If you're not sure but want to share your thoughts and theories only, please indicate as much in your response.  Thanks.

    Welcome to AD!
Here is an article on using multiple ipods. I suggest method 1 and steer clear of method 3.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1495
For your point #1, sharing music on same PC between users, put it in a shared library & set permissions as directed here
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1203
For #2, itunes doesn't have the capability to monitor folders for new content. You'll need to get something like the free program 'itunes folder watch'.

  • Syncing multiple calendars to a Nokia N70

    Hi there
This is my first post and I hope I'm not duplicating any previous ones.
I have just bought a new Nokia N70 and I am very pleased with it - I'd highly recommend it as a solid phone. In the near future, I'll be getting a GPS for it and also hope to use some kind of Office package on it.
I'm using OS X 10.4.6 and found, once I'd activated Bluetooth, iSync worked straight away and synced my Address Book (with pictures) and iCal. My question is this though - has anyone tried syncing multiple calendars and kept the categories on the phone?
The built in calendar on the N70 doesn't appear to support categories, well certainly nothing you can customise, so I downloaded a trial of AquaCalendar which does. However, when I synced, all the category information was lost. Syncing back to the Mac, you can tell iSync to place items created on the phone to a specific calendar, so that's ok, it's just the other way around.
Basically I have 4 calendars on iCal, 1 for me, 1 for my wife, 1 for Birthdays and 1 for UK Hols (subscribed) They have a particular colour and love the way iCal shows them. What I want is to transfer this colour set so I get the same thing on the N70. Anyone had any sucess with this?
    Many thanks
    Simon

    langert3,
You would have to upgrade to Tiger to publish several calendars as a group.
Publishing calendars to .Mac: If you're using iCal 2.0 or later, you can create Calendar groups and publish them to .Mac. If you publish a Calendar group, all the events and To Do information from the calendars in the group is merged and published in one calendar. You can also choose to publish individual calendars in the group.Unfortunately that feature is not available in iCal 1.5.5.
