Syncing & Music Storage

Do I have to keep my music on my computer once I transfer it to my iPod? I've tried deleting music from my computer, manually syncing only new music, only to have all the music then removed from my iPod. I backup all my music to disc and just don't have enough space to keep music both on my iPod and on my hard drive. If there is a way to do this please be specific (include steps) as I have tried everything (including manually syncing only new music) and must be doing something wrong.

I have a second generation Nano, 2GB. Okay I went and checked...the music I deleted was in the "Purchased" playlist under Store. I restored the music to my iPod (it was still in itunes even though I deleted the "purchased" playlist). What I meant by 'new music' was I went to the music tab, checked the boxes on the music I wanted to sync, then pressed apply, then sync. It deleted everything.
So on options, which do I check? __Open iTunes when iPod is connected, __sync only checked songs, __manually manage music, __enable disk space? so that I only transfer songs I recently downloaded?
My last question is, can I put my entire music collection on an external portable drive rather than keeping it on my computer's hard drive? If so how do I tell iTunes where to look for the music when it's time to sync? Sorry if I seem so lame!

I can't sync music already on my computer to my ipod touch; the ipod shows up under Devices in itunes but does not show buttons (Summary etc.) when I click on it. I've read through all the Help tutorials but none of them say what to do if the sync options don't pop up when you highlight the device.  I've already spent way too much time trying to figure this out and it's driving me crazy!  Thanks for any help you can offer.

This is correct.  It will not show in finder.  It is not an external storage device.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The only exception is itunes purchases.  Open itunes connect ipod, do not sync, click File>Transfer Purchases

how can i delete the sync musics in my ipod..well in fact i already changed my settings..i already use manual choosing of musics and videos..how can i delete the sync music?? beacause i really dont like the sync musics, pls help me...

go to settings > general > usage > music app under the storage section > slide across the bar that says 'photo library' and a red delete button will appear
you can also plug the device into your computer with itunes, go to the photos tab at the top center and uncheck where it says 'sync photos.' then press 'apply' in the bottom right corner. this will erase the photos that were synced to your phone from the computer

  • I can't sync music to my iDevice without it removing what is already on it

I have recently gotten a new computer, because my old one broke and we did not find the want to fix it just so it would break again (it was unreliable), and so now that I have new music on this computer that I would like to sync to my iPod and my iPhone it won't allow me to do that without iTunes first removing everything on my iPod/iPhone.
Considering that if I were to do this.. I'd forever lose all those files that are on my iPod/iPhone.  I have been suggested to go back onto my old computer get all of the song files onto a storage device and transfer them to this computer, but the problem is.. my old computer is broken, and I'm fairly sure it's not even around my household anymore.
So, if there is any kind of way to get around this on iTunes or someway I can get my songs and such from my iDevices onto this computer, but not necessarily iTunes (first), it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I can see this is an old question but I had this problem this week and spoke with tech support for an hour + to get the answer.  The problem is visible within iTunes when you are connected to the mac and  try to sync music, but are unable because the screen says: iTunes Match is Turned On, even tho it is indeed turned off on your computer settings, and you have not renewed the subscription in the iTunes Store account settings on line.  The fix is on the iPhone or the iPad.  By the way, since this is an older post let me mention I am on Yosemite, and iTunes 12 and ios8 on the iPhone.
I tried several steps that didn't work, some that were listed on help sites and some the senior tech people had me try.
The fix worked like this.  I plugged in the iPhone to the mac with the sync cable and with iTunes open and on the music setting it says, "iTunes Match is On" then I went to iPhone touched "settings" then "iTunes & App Store" then at the top of the next screen where it says Apple ID: in Blue  - touch your ID.  Then a menu appears that says, View Apple id, Sign Out, Forget and Cancel.  Touch the Sign Out Item.  Now you should be signed out of the iTunes store on your phone.
Next unplug the iPhone from the computer and plug it back in.  Now when you go to the section in iTunes to sync music it will say, "Sync Music Manually" and you can now sync as you want to do.  When you are done go back to the settings on the iPhone and sign back in.
I have an iPhone and 2 iPads, I had to do this procedure on each of my devices.
The phone no longer has a toggle setting to turn off "iTunes Match" like the help pages say. I think the phone is supposed do identify that you are no longer subscribed all on its own, but if for some reason it doesn't, then this may help.

  • IPod touch will not sync music

I have my ipod touch 4g plugged in by usb to the computer.
It does detect it, but when I press Sync, it will update everything including transferring purchases.
It will transfer Music purchases, but not the other way around.
iTunes will not put music in its library into the ipod. (shows up in itunes library but not on ipod)
The notification bar thing at the top will say Syncing "ipod" and then determines which apps and music to sync.
BUT IT WILL NOT ADD THE NEW SONGS.
Another note is that the bar that shows the storage of the ipod: Audio 6.6 gb
i press sync --> Audio 7.5 gb --> (wait for a minute) --> somehow reverts back to Audio 6.6gb (see pics below)
The notification bar will revert back to an Apple logo and doesnt do anything.
I tried many things: reinstalling iTunes, hard reset of ipod, etc. (except restore, which i will not do since it wont sync music)
I have all the latest updates to all my stuff.
Anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

I'll try Restore but I was doing some testing and this issue only affects PURCHASED MUSIC FROM ITUNES.
I deleted a song from both ipod and itunes and readded it through "Add a file to iTunes..." and it worked for music that I get from CDs and internet but NOT THE ONES ON ITUNES.
^ just a good note to put down and yes i'll try a restore when i have time.

  • I can't sync music and iTunes no longer recognizes my early nano.

I have an early nano, 2G storage.  Original install was on my desktop, which had a harddrive crash.  Reinstalled on laptop while desktop was being fixed, no problems for a while.  Put back on desktop once repaired.  I can no longer sync music to my nano from either computer, iTunes on the desktop does not recognize the nano when it is attached, and iTunes and iStore don't recognize my name or password.  I'd really like to update my playlist.  What are my possible solutions?

  • IPod 5 not syncing music

I've tried to sync music so many different ways, I've tried how you usually would do it through the music tab but it starts and stops right away. Then I tried to click and drop the songs but it won't let me. I originally got some songs onto it by using auto fill And it put music on the iPod but now that I've downloaded more music and was hoping to add it to my iPod, none of those are working, when I try to auto fill it now with music it says preparing to update files and then after two minutes it stops again. Help pls??

Assuming the songs play OK in iTunes on the computer:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Itunes will not manually sync music with my Iphone 5

I am trying to manually sync music from ITunes and my Iphone5. From the Info screen I have selected the option to manually sync music and video files. From the music screen I have selected the option to sync selected artists, etc. I selected some of my music and was conscious to leave room for all the other items on my phone (per the storage bar at the bottom of the screen). When I select 'Sync' at the bottom of the screen, ITunes goes through all of the steps to sync and seems to complete. However nothing is copied over to my phone and I do not see any of the titles being transferred in the status bar. Additionally, I am receiving an error message that states I do not have enough disk space to complete the transfer and that an additional 4GB is required. However, I have a very small amount of music scheduled to transfer and the status bar that tracks available space still has over 7GB available with my selections made. I appear to have ample disk space yet the phone will not update any music at all.  Please help if you can. Thank you.

I have the exact same problem. My Iphone is always synced by connecting to my computer because I don't want anything on the cloud. All of the sudden the yellow "other" part of the bar showing what's on my phone  will fill up the right half of the bar even though I haven't added anything. I have emptied the phone  of all it's content one category at a time to try to identify what the "OTHER" is. I remove all the apps, them Music and so on. It doesn't work and the yellow bar stays showing it is taking up half the space on my phone. So then I put the settings back the way they were, which should leave about a quarter of my storage space free. Then I do a reset of my phone and after two hours ( that's how long it takes) The "other" yellow bar goes back down to taking up about 1/20 of space on my IPhone even though I haven't made any changes. The only reason I sync at all is to add music to my phone that I've added to my main library on ITunes. This is so frustrating and a huge wast of my time! Can someone tell me haw to stop this please?

  • Unable to sync music from PC to iPhone 5 after installing ISO8

I really hope someone can help me as I have been struggling for over 30 hours trying now (in between studying and sleeping). I have been using iTunes for years, and I regularly create new playlists and sync them.  Last weekend I installed ISO 8 and deleted some music off my iphone to create enough room.  After installing it I connected my iphone 5 to my PC using a usb lead, selected the tracks and playlists I wanted to sync and hit SYNC. It ran through the steps 1 to 4 as usual, but then instead of listing the tracks it was syncing at the top (like normal) it just finished, completed, but the tracks are not on my iphone. I have been doing this for years, I am not an expert but I know how to sync music, it is just not working and I really need the playlists for a dance project at college tomorrow.  I have received a couple of error messages, one stating "The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. The disk could not be read from or written to" and another about syncing error. I am really desperate, any suggestions would be most greatly appreciated.

  • ITunes 11.1 wont sync music to iPhone 4s

I'm having a problem with getting iTunes to sync music onto my iPhone 4s after updating to iOS 7 and iTunes 11.1. Tried restarting both devices and it didn't help. Hoping someone can help me with this problem.
    Thanks in advance,

Hey everyone, I have also been having this problem and have finally found a solution that is not quite what anyone else has posted yet.
I actually haven't seen the "Syncing Music to iphone" since the new ios update so im quite happy..
Here are the steps that I took to solve:
    1. Turned off auto lock and password on iphone
    2. After connecting iphone on the summary page the only three boxes I have checked are Automatically sync when iphone is connected, sync only checked songs and videos, manually manage music and videos
    3. Now, click the On this iPhone tab. In the bottom right there are "setting" and "Autofill". Under "Settings" select replace all items when Autofilling. I also arbitrarily selected "reserve 1.12GB for disk use".
    5. Then I clicked "Autofill" and selected Replace Songs.
    6. Lastly I pressed "Sync" while I was still on the "On This iPhone" page.
    7. I was actually about to leave the computer and then I saw something magical..."Syncing Music".....Holy Sh...!!!
Notes:On the iPhone: WiFi, Bluetooth, Cellular, personal Hotspot and VPN are all disabled. I use PC. I have about 5000 songs. I do not use Match.
Before today I was also having a disc space issue with a large block of "other". I deleted the music data from my iphone and that fixed that problem, however, the phone was still not syncing the majority (4800 of 5000) songs.
I do not pay for icloud storage, I have never restored my iphone
*I also do not have the "Sync Music" box checked under the Music tab, however, simply doing this did not solve the problem

  • Itunes keeps turning on 'sync music' to iphone

Everytime I plug my iPhone in to my computer, iTunes will by itself toggle on 'sync music'. When I untoggle it and go back and hand add songs to the phone, it starts a sync process again and low and behold the sync music button is toggled on again! And the songs that I've just added by hand are removed from the phone again.
I recently used the sync to be able to delate some songs that had auto-download to my phone when I upgraded it to iOS7. These songs weren't appearing on the list of music when I hooked my iphone up and I wasn't able to delete them striaght from the phone either. I turned the sync off as soon as I got the songs deleted so I could go back in and add only the small number of songs I wanted to be on my phone.
I'm really at wits end at this point. I'd stop plugging the phone into my computer if I could, but its my only means of charging at the moment. Anyone else have this problem?

  • How to sync music to the N8's MicroSD card

I bought a 32GB MicroSD card for my N8 so that I had enough capacity to store all of my MP3s. Unfortunately I can't convince Ovi Music Player to sync music to that location. It always tries to sync the music to the N8's 16GB internal storage area despite there not being enough capacity to do so.
Is there any way to configure either Ovi Music Player or the N8 to use the MicroSD card exclusively for the music library? It's making me very frustrated.

Whilst I hear what you say, carman, just search for the number of threads relating to the problems many people have (and I have had corrupted libraries, album art missing, etc, and I am a fairly experienced user) just trying to get music into a library.  IF it was working, as it should, then the facilities provided by Nokia should just transfer the music in a easy standard way, complete with artwork, to your desired location, and you should end up with a working music system and a completely updated working library.  There should be ONE recommended way of doing it, which should be fairly automatic, simple, reliable, safe and should just work.  That situation does not exist.
Now, I am not saying providing flexibility by providing other alternatives is not desirable. What I AM saying is that Nokia should be able to say - "if you do it this way, then it will work correctly."  From the number of people who have problems with music transfer and libraries, it is obvious that this message has not reached the mass of the users. Whether that is an inability to provide such a feature, or an inability to communicate what it is, and how to use it, Nokia is falling down somewhere. To be honest, after trying to transfer my music to my sd card, unsuccessfully, and then getting advice to go into the file structure and delete files, I gave up and just loaded it onto the phone.  Why should an end user (most of whom, like my mother, are not as technically competent as me) need to start searching for and deleting files just to get their music library working? No wonder the restrictive practices implemented by Apple have been lauded (although I don't like that company because of it!).  At least they have made their product relatively user-friendly, which is a BIG plus when you are dealing in this sort of area. Not everybody is capable of dealing with the sort of problems people seem to encounter doing something as simple as loading music (in fact, probably the majority ....). It should just work!  This lack of ability to 'keep it simple' has been the downfall of Nokia. Their developers provide superb bells and whistles, but seem not to have grasped the fact that bells and whistles are fantastic to have, AS LONG AS THE BASICS ARE ROCK SOLID. And from my experience, transferring music to an sd card is no way a simple or rock solid process, without you doing a lot of digging to find out how to do it successfully - hence all the posts. • 0 songs synced music; yet 1.75 GB space for audio taken

    Hello guys,
I was recently using itunes in the cloud but for the moment I went back to good old syncing as I needed to free a lot of space and the manual delete of all the albums I had already offline appeared to be a pain.
However, unchecking the cloud in the iPad settings and connecting it to my macbook and there checking the "Sync Music" and "Selected (...) songs" and unticking _every single one_ of the old preferences be it in albums, artists, playlists, what-so-ever yields "0 songs" at the top right. However, the storage indicator tells me that still, 1.75 GB of space will be taken up by "audio". Tones, iTunes U and Podcasts are also not checked to be synced. What can I do to free up more space?

  • Ipon nano 3rd generation red. Sync and storage problems.

I have just got the new iPod nano (product red) 8 GB capacity. When i started to sync with my Intel Macbook i got suprised with a sync and storage problem. It starts syncing and suddendly it stops and lock the iPod and the Itunes. The must surprising is that happens every time the storage capacity reaches about 300 mb of music. Does anybody got this kinf of problem?
I have tried all the solutions I have found: formatting the iPod, connecting on a PC, restoring the factory settings and nothing works.

You'll want to copy what is currently on the Nano to your iTunes library on the laptop.  Your iPod can only be synced with one iTunes library at a time. See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.
