Syncing my devices on iCloud

I received an iPad for Christmas and now I'm trying to sync my Mac, iPhone and iPad. When I went to System Preferences on my MacBook Pro, I couldn't find the "iCloud" icon. There's a "MobileMe" icon though. Where do I find it, or how do I install it?

The minimum system requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.2 - you will need to upgrade your Mac to Lion, or preferably Mountain Lion, provided that it meets the requirements. You can't use iCloud with Snow Leopard except to access your email. You can sync your iPad and iPhone using iTunes and a USB cable.
Lion requires:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space

That's correct. iCloud handles only its own email, and has no relationship with other accounts. It's in the nature of a POP service that messages are downloaded from the server to the machine - it was really designed for single-computer use in the days when a second computer was an unheard-of luxury. You can usually set the email client to leave message on the server either permanently or for a specified period, so that other devices can also access the messages, but of course they won't see replies or sent messages.
IMAP (which is what iCloud uses) is the better protocol to use - the messages live on the server and the various computers and devices read them from there, like webmail - and a service which provides that will behave in exactly the same way as iCloud but independently of it. You should ask BT if they can provide an IMAP version of the account - some ISPs provide both, some don't.

I will be backing up my new Mac Pro to the iCloud along with my iPhone, iPad and iPad mini. I would like my music and music videos that I own from CDs to be stored on my Mac Pro hard drive but to be kept in sync with my Mac mini server in New York and my Mac mini server in Florida. So every time I add a new cd in NYC to my hard drive music collection, it is available on my Mac mini in Florida and NYC. Can I upload a new cd in NYC to the Mac mini and keep it in sync in NYC Mac Pro and Florida Mac mini? Thank you.

Before switching to iCloud my calendar synced to my desktop Mac, MacBook, iPad and iPhone automatically. Since switching to iCloud, my calendar has not synced to all devices. How do I get back to the automatic syncing of my calendar?

How can I make my photo albums sync between devices via iCloud?

I've recently started using iCloud to sync my iPhone 5 and iPad (original iPad). Problem is: new albums I create on my iPad in Photos are not appearing on my iPhone in Photos.
I thought they were meant to sync automatically but I've waited a week for them to sync and nothing has changed.
I just went into iCloud in my iPhone and did 'Backup Now' and upon completion, it's made no differecne to my missing photo albums.
Photos are turned on in iCloud on both devices.
Is there a way to 'force' iCloud to sync them up?

Is your phone number checked in Settings>Messages>Send & Receive at>You can be reached by iMessages at. If it is selected in there, make sure that nothing else is checked that would cause the phone number to not be used.
Sometimes all that you have to do is to close the app completely and then launch it again and that might jump start the syncing of your messages. In order to close apps in iOS 7, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
If all of that is set up properly, you may have to sign out of messages on your devices and start over again. Start with the phone first so that the phone number is accessible to use on the iPad. Maybe this will be of some help.

When I sync my devices with iCloud, iCal duplicates the appointments.

If you have a MobileMe account, also check to make sure it is not active. If you have an MM account on your Mac go to System Preferences>MobileMe and delete the account. You may need to turn off and turn back on the services you use on iCloud.

You can create a Quicktime movie slideshow of the book's pages and share that. Here's how to get your book into an iPhoto slideshow and then export as a Quicktime video:
1 - While viewing the book type Command+P to start the print process.
2 - click on the PDF button and select "Save PDF to iPhoto".
Note: If you don't have any of those options go to Toad's Cellar and download these two files:

Unzip the files and place in the HD/Library/PDF Services folder and reboot.
3 - select either of the files above (300 dip is used for photos to be included in a book that will be ordered).
4 - in the window that comes up enter an album name or select an existing album and hit the Continue button.
That will create a 200 or 300 dpi jpeg file of the item being printed and import it into iPhoto. Immediately select all of the photos in the new album and sequentially renumber them as "Page " using the Batch Change ➙ Title to Text with the option to add a sequential number to each title. This is to let you put the pages back in the correct order in the event they get sorted incorrectly.
Now you can proceed as follows: create the slideshow in iPhoto and export it out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar. Select Size = Medium or Large (480p with iPhoto 9),

Notification centre sync between devices

I seem to remember that when iOS 7 was announced that notification centre would sync between devices via iCloud and if a notification was marked as read on one device it would do so on all devices. This clearly isn't happening at the moment. Is this because it hasn't been switched on yet or has it just been quietly pulled from the feature set?
Is it working for anyone else?

The notifications at the top of my iPad are going away when I dismiss on my iphone but the badges are not going away likewise for unread emails. I get home from work and my iPad has a bunch of unread emails. Sometimes there is no words with friends notification on my iPad but there is on my iphone even before I address it on either device. I had a chat Friday night with an apple support person and was told the servers are overloaded. Perhaps Apple should stagger updates the way Google does.

What do you mean by "apple ID"? There's an ID you can use at the iTunes store to buy songs, apps, etc. there's an ID you can use for your iCloud account - the two can be different or the same. So which service are you referring to when you talk about an apple ID?

Plug it into your computer. Tell it to sync with "this computer" instead of iCloud. You shouldn't have to remove any apps. Otherwise, you can save the app data by using i-FunBox ( http://www.i-funbox.com/ ) just go to the "devices" tab and select 'user applications' and select all of your apps and tell iFunBox to "copy to pc" you're done! You have them all backed up.

Will I be able to disable the automatic icloud sync between devices?

What I want to know from looking at the keynote speech it looks like if I buy a song on my phone or ipad it will also get downloaded to my son's iphone even though he may not want the sond and vice versa. I hope there will be a way to disable the automatic sync between devices because in theory it sounds good but when you have several ios devices in the family they usually don't want to have the same music that I listen too. I have a MBA, Iphon4, and Ipad and would not mind all of them syncing together but my son's iphon 3GS does not need to be synced with the other devices. I didn't hear anything about being able to disable it and if someone knows can they let the rest of us know. Thanks.

That is exactly what I am talking about. I know you can share your purchases through several devices and some of the app store stuff my son and I share with no problem. I just hope that sharing is ok. Also using picture flow could be bad too. What if I want to take a picture that I don't want on any other device. This is all good but sounds like they didn't think this through all the way before implementing it. I am a mobileme subscriber and have been for 2 years and I liked iDisk. There was nothing wrong with the way it worked as I could set up iDisk only on my devices and my son's would not be affected. Like I said good idea but for some of us we may not want stuff out on the cloud automatically.
Also I can see some folks up in arms about privacy issues just like they did with the tracking issue. I am thinking I will turn this service off on all my devices until I get more information about it after it is implemented.

You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be "setup.icloud.com" which could put your confidential information at risk." I am not positive if this issue coincides with the update to OS6.0.

You should update to the latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.8 - you can download it here; however it's still not compatible with iCloud and though you can connect to access your email you cannot access any other of iCloud's facilities.
However some people have been able to set up calendar syncing by using the method detailed here - this is an unsupported hack and may not be reliable, and may stop working at some future point. I've not tried it: use at your own discretion.

Are you sure you can't upgrade to Lion? It requires an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, which you may well have, though it also needs 2GB RAM so you might need to add additional RAM (might not be worth it for what you want). The published specs don't mention 32 or 64 bit. You can buy Lion by ringing the Apple Store at the number at bottom left of this page.

Syncing with gmail and iCloud across 3 devices

I cannot get my devices to sync properly (MacBook, iPad mini, iPhone 5c). I use Gmail and iCloud, and it seems to muddy the waters. My contacts, for example, are a mess. As someone who is normally on top of the tech stuff, I feel confused and very frustrated. Is it time to get rid of Gmail? Do I need to wipe my data and start fresh? For some reason there just seem to be too many settings to get everything to work seamlessly. If anyone has faced similar issues please let me know if you have any solutions--whether it is a step by step process, or visit or the Genius Bar...

iCloud doesn't sync email; changing your iCloud settings won't effect your ability to sync email. Just set up the same Gmail account on all your devices. Unless you set it up as a POP account, it will stay in sync across your devices. (Only IMAP and Exchange accounts sync across your devices; POP email doesn't.)

How often iCloud sync between devices takes place?

Previously on Mobile Me, sync between devices (of contacts, bookmarks, etc...) was automatic and there was an option to trigger a sync manually. The automatic mode was very fast, and updates would occur in a matter of a minute or less.
With iCloud I can't find an option to intiate a sync. And automatic sync seems to take ages, sometimes hours.
It can cause problems, for example, I go out to an important meeting and I update the meeting address on my mac's calendar. Then on the way to the meeting I refer to my iPhone to check the details, but 15-30 minutes later they are still not there.
Does anyone else experience this slowness in updating, and has anyone found a way to force a sync?

To refresh on Mac iCal: View > Refresh all (see screen shot).
To refresh on iOS devices I find that to quit and reboot the app usually speeds things up (double tap home button > press and hold app in question > tap red minus that appears > then reopen from home screen).
