Syncing my two Macs... HELP!

Hello,
I am trying to learn how to keep my Macbook Pro and new iMac synced so both of my computers can be "on the same page" at all times. I want to keep everything synced. I have never used iSync before. Usually I have no problem using Mac software. However, I am not sure how to get this to work. I created a pair using the iSync but I am not sure how to turn on the Blue Tooth. Also, when I start iSync it says there are no devices even though I have set it up several times. It says that it's not connected on the Blue Tooth. I cannot figure out how to connect. I thought this would have to do with the Sharing so I went and turned on ALL of the sharing options for both computers. Is this necessary and will this allow other people to access my computer? When available I only allowed my name and administrators. I don't want to create a security risk, I just want to sync my macs. Please help!

The problem is that iSync is not for syncing Macs. It is for syncing Contacts and Calendars between a single Mac and supported third-party mobile phones and PDAs.
No matter how hard you try, you cannot add a Mac as a device in iSync.
MobileMe will keep your Contacts, Calendars, Emails, Bookmarks etc. in sync across multiple Macs.

For keeping files in sync have a look at ChronoSync (google it).

can Lion server keep my photos in sync between two macs?  Where should I keep them, we have Aperture 3 and my wife still likes iphoto '11.  I've already tried plenty of 3rd party solutions with little success.  I simply want my MBP to "mirror" the imac with the exception of iMovie footage.  Is this what the server app can do?  I am bad enough with computers, but even thinking about a server gives me migraines!

  • Staying in sync across two Macs

I use Lightroom 4 on two Macs and try to keep them in sync. I keep my Lightroom data in my Box sync folder so that it syncs with the Box servers, and between the Macs. That way I, in theory, have the same data on both machines and backed up in the cloud.
The trouble is, the same data doesn't appear on both Macs. I've tried navigating to different Lighroom catologs and backups, but don't seem to be able to find the right files. I think I'm a bit confused as to how catologs work and how to find the most recent file.
    Any ideas? Thanks.

What do you mean when you refer to "Lightroom data"? That could mean a lot of different things.
How quickly is this software able to upload changes from one computer so that they can be read by the 2nd computer? I would imagine that a large catalog file might take a while to upload from one computer and then download to the 2nd computer.

  • Lightroom 3.5 - Library automatic syncing between two Macs?

    Hey there you Lightroom-Masters!
I am diggin' deeper and deeper into Professional Photography and am now using two Macs two develop my my .DNG RAWs.
In my Livingroom stands a 27" iMac, which is great to develop them further, and when I am on the road I am using a 15" MacBook Pro.
Thing is: the iMac has a Library of roughly 40.000 Pictures, the MacBook Pro is mostly used when I am not home for editing. Is there
any way I can sync my Librarys via Ethernet to each other? That way I wouldn't need to re-edit my shots again on my iMac, or export my
whole catalogue and push them around via my own network...
I hope one can understand my problem, if not I'll try hard to explain it further...

Given the amount of images and the idea to stay portable (I am carrying around 10kg of Equipment + the MBP) it is not an option to keep the catalogue saved on a portable FireWire (or Thunderbolt Drive). I just need a solution to sync the processed images with my iMac, best would be via my home network (as I don't need to sync it when I am abroad or else). Simple as that...
The second idea from you, Hal, is more feasible for me. I'll test that out as soon as I can.
I am still wondering why Lightroom hasn't got that function right away... I can't believe that I am the only one wanting such a feature?
But thank you very much, Hal!

  • Automatic sync of two macs.

I have 2 macs (iMac desktop and Mac Book Pro) I would like two sync the two every evening to be identical. Including the applications and system folders as well as users and documents etc. The sync will need to be done every day to update files that have been modified on either machine. Is it possible to do this via Time machine or is there a third party software that is capable of doing the same thing? if possible at all.

Time Machine is a backup application, not a sync app. There are some apps that will do some of what you want, but including applications may be a bit much for them.
You can't really synchronize the system folders, as they aren't entirely the same -- they have different drivers, and different preference panels, among other things. This is why you can't successfully do a full system restore of one Mac's TM backups (or bootable clone) to a different Mac.
An Apple MobileMe account will do some automatic synchronization: http://www.apple.com/mobileme/ I've never used it, so can't recommend for or against. You might want to browse and/or post in it's forums, in the +Digital Life+ section: http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=116

  • Is there any way to sync my two macs iTunes libraries?

I have two Macs a Macbook Pro and an Imac.  I'd like to sync the iTunes libraries.  Is this possible?

A not-infrequent question and as yet the answer is pretty much no, there isn't an easy way to do it.  One way is to keep your library on an external drive and move it between computers so you are really using just one library.  Apple has, of course, come up with you being able to download media to various locations as long as you buy all your music from Apple, or you subscribe to Match.  Still, this is just downloading media. It isn't synchronizing the library since that involves more, such as ratings, playlists, playcount, etc.
There's: iTunes: How to share music and video - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2688 - about Music Sharing and Home Sharing.  Still, that just facilitates media transfer, it doesn't update the complete library which is more than just media.
PowerTunes - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/powertunes/ (commercial software)  - doesn't really look like it does what you want.  I have a link for sync-o-tunes which does, but that won't work on modern Macs.

  • How can I sync my two Macs & iphone?

I am using MobileMe before and everything is perfect. I have two Macs running OS10.5, one in my office and one at home. I have an iphone running ios 5.0.1.
Can I sync them all together, eg. Contact, Calendar, Bookmark, Mail etc. How can I sync the calendar on my Mac/iphone with icloud Calendar?

I have two Macs running OS10.5
Your Macs must be running Lion v10.7 in order to setup iCloud.
First, you would need to purchase and install Snow Leopard v10.6 >  Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store
Once Snow Leopard is installed, you can download Lion 10.7.2 from the App Store.
Before you do anything, make sure your Mac meets Lion's requirements.
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
OSX v10.6.6 or later (V10.6.8 recommended)
    7GB of available spare

  • Sync between two macs?

I have 2 macs at home. iMac G5 and a PowerBook. Is there a way to sync the two computers?
Here's why I ask this question.
I was working on my iMac G5 thinking that when I open iweb on my powerbook it will open the same files. Nope...there's no way to even import (or none that I know of anyway). Is there a easy way or is this function not available yet.
I would love to take my powerbook out and update my iweb pages and be able to go home and work on the same pages on my iMac.
    Patrick

I wish Apple would implement a "login"
function next so that we can just "login" to our
account and be able to make modifications to our
    files.
I haven't tried it, but you might be able to keep the latest version of the Domain file on .Mac, copy it to whatever machine you were using, and then replace it each time with the modified version. This process might even be automated via some kind of backup or sync program.

  • ICal Sync between two macs

Is there a way to sync iCal between two macs without having a .Mac account?
    Thanks,
    "D"

As far as backing up your calendars, I use the A/S below (scheduled daily) to backup my calendars. It places a copy of (~/Library/Calendars) in your (~/Library) folder.
Can be modified to locate the backup to an external drive if desired.
    --pick up directory path
set WhoAmI to ((path to library folder from user domain) as string)
set the_date to date string of (current date)
    tell application "Finder"
--make our backup folder if necessary
if not (exists folder (WhoAmI & "CalBackup")) then
make new folder with properties {name:"CalBackup"} at folder WhoAmI
         end if
delete every folder of folder (WhoAmI & "CalBackup")
         delay 3
make new folder with properties {name:the_date} at folder (WhoAmI & "CalBackup")
duplicate files of folder (WhoAmI & "Calendars") to folder (WhoAmI & "CalBackup:" & the_date)
         --check file sizes
set FileList to every file of folder (WhoAmI & "CalBackup:" & the_date)
         repeat with ThisFile in FileList
set TheSize to (size of ThisFile) / 1024
if TheSize < 0.2 then display dialog ((name of ThisFile) as string) & " may be empty" with icon caution
         end repeat
    end tell
Copy the script and paste it into your Script Editor. I saved it as an app called "iCal Backup" which I schedule to run daily.

  • Can someone help me on how to sync between two mac?

I am using a macbook and recently purchased a new imac. First. I want to know how can i transfer a copy of all my file/music/photo into the new imac?
and how can I transfer the whole itune library and keep both computer in sync?
and finally.. is there any software or easy way I can keep both document in sync between 2 computer? I have around 80G data in total ( music/ doc/ pic/ application)
    Many thanks.

I have chronosync installed in my macbook since I use that for backup into external harddisk.. will that work if i connect my imac to my macbook?
I'm not familiar with the program. If it offers synchronization between folders then it should work: you need to decide which folders you sync, of course (don't try to sync the whole computer).
and how about itune libaray.. if I copy the whole itune library to imac.. when I start the application, will all the songs loaded up properly? or will I need to manually load all the songs again?
I would expect that if you synced (user)>Music>iTunes it would work provided both versions of iTunes are the same. However I would advise testing it: move this folder somewhere else temporarily on one machine, and copy the same folder from the other machine into the same position, and check that it works OK. If it doesn't you can always replace the original folder. If it does then syncing ought to work.
and can my Ipod and iphone only allow to sync with 1 computer?
In theory yes, though you might get away with it if both computers have the same name and the user name is the same. You might like to ask in the appropriate forums, someone may have tried this.

  • Keep Podcasts in iTunes in sync with two Macs

I see the guide on MacRumors on how to keep music library in sync, but I don't want to loan the entire music library on both Macs. I just want to keep all the Podcasts in sync. Any thoughts on how to do this?

Alan, you could always use a cell phone. I do this with both a Nokia 6230 and 6280. Both are supported by iSync.
That said I agree with Rich.... dot mac works well, I use that as well to keep 4 macs running the same copy of iCal and AddressBook

  • Syncing between two Mac through .Mac not working

I work on a G5 at home OSX 10.4, I have calendars set up for work, home and hold (hold dates for clients) I sync to .Mac from the G5 OK, when I open iCal on my G4 iBook (signed on with the same .Mac membership info) only previous dates appear in the G4, future dates are blank. Calendar names from G5 show up on G4 no problem just no events. When I go to the URL of my calendar from my G5 I see the current calendar no problem, when I go to the URL of the same calendar on my G4 there are no events listed.
I thought I was supposed to be able to see my calendars on all of my Macs, am I doing something wrong?

Does each computer have a unique registered identity? Do both identities appear in the .Mac Sync pane when you press the Advanced tab? While one account is used to synchronize multiple clients, each client must have a unique identity.
You can get more help in the forums regarding .Mac Sync issues by browsing, searching and posting in this forum area:
    http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=957
You can also submit a support request on .Mac itself under the Help section, by using a web form accessed when you press the Sync icon.

  • How can I keep Mail in sync on two Macs?

One of the beauties of .mac seems to be that you can work on your email from various computers.
Both my wife and I each have a Mac laptop, which we sometimes want to use interchangeably (webcam, size, portability reasons). We each have an individual @mac.com email address but would like to have both email accounts combined and visible on each computer. What sync settings would I need to choose to achieve this?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

POP accounts can be set up to leave mail on the server. Thus this mail could be accessed from several different computers.
I used Eudora a while ago, and set up 2 accounts, one left email on the server, and one did not. I would normally check mail from the one that left it on the server (accounts like this on several macs). When I was ready to download the mail, then I would check it from the other account that existed on only one of the macs.
So in Mail, you could set up for POP and leave mail on the server. Then when ready to download (and not be able to see mail from various macs) you could switch to another user account, where Mail would be set up to not leave mail on the server.
However, iMap makes this whole process easier.
Normally, iMap mail can stay on the server forever. But I do like to get my mail and store it on my Mac after an arbitrary period of time. So I have set up a smart rule in Mail.
    It is GET MAIL:
if Date received is less than 10 days old
perform the following actions: stop evaluating rules
So every day the mail is received, and of course it is less than 10 days old, so the rules stop evaluating.
When I am ready to download the messages I select all in the mailbox, and use command-option-L to apply the rules. Any messages less than 10 days old stay on the server, Older messages then follow the other rules which are listted after GET MAIL. Usually these just filter mail into specific dumb mailboxes on my Mac. And/Or they could color the mail, or whatever else I choose to do with the mail.

  • IPhone syncing to two Macs at the same time

Hi there, iI'd be really grateful if others have found a solution to this... Basically, I just transferred all my photos and music over to a new Mac Mini because by MacBook was getting a bit full. I've also connected my iPhone 5s to the new Mini and got it to sync. Having done all that, I started deleting photos and music from my old MacBook to free up space. However when I went to delete songs from the old Macbook iTunes library I was warned that these would delete them from my phone too I synced. 'Fine' I thought, I won't sync them again. However, I just connected my phone by lightning cable to the Mac Mini and asked it to sync and the MacBook (which is sat on, behind me) started syncing (I assume by wifi).
What are my options here please? Do I, for ever more, have to keep the MacBook off when I sync my phone to the Mini? Or can I decouple the phone and MacBook (whilst keeping the MacBook attached to my Apple ID?
Thanks in advance for any advice, I've scoured the forums and can't find others with this issue!

I don't run the newest iTunes, nor do I have any devices I can sync, so I cannot check things for you.  There's a bunch of settings in the sync window and possibly also in iTunes preferences regarding syncing.  I'm sure a bunch of them relate to keeping devices in sync through iCloud and probably wireless syncing.  Look at them and figure out which ones you need to disable in your scenario.
It's going to be a nightmare keeping your things in sync and knowing which files are on what and whether or not to sync.  I don't envy you.
