Syncing only Music - is it possible without wiping out contacts on iPhone?

I have my iPhone synced with my laptop at home but since we're allowed to use iTunes at work, my library at work has become much larger and I'd like to transfer my music here onto my iPhone but I'm worried it will wipe out my contacts. My apps are already synced with iTunes at work, and I tried syncing the music but a message pops up that says "this phone is synced with another computer. Are you sure you want to erase the contents and replace it with the contents of this iTunes library?" so I hit cancel because that message somewhat worries me. I do not have any videos or photos or podcasts on the phone so I'm not worried about that but if I lose the contacts I have no way of getting some of them back since I've entered some of them directly into the phone in the past few months. Help!!

Contacts are not affected by the erase. In fact, unlike music, you can sync contacts/calendars with multiple computers.

So you have all you music on the iPhone, right? and you want to transfer FROM the iPhone TO the computer?
You can't do that with iTunes as far as i know, but you could probably get by that going through "this computer" or something.. I'm not sure, but technically it should be possible.
    good luck!

Connect time capsule via ethernet to Mac for back-up only. Is it possible without internet connection ?

    Hi Bob,
I'm not certain the post I sent was posted correctly, as I added it as a reply to a 3-year old thread. Since this is a recently-active thread, though not specific to the issue at hand, I thought I'd post again:
Three years ago you helped me set up a roaming wireless network in my home. It's been rock-steady and I'm forever grateful to you for the time and guidance you gave me. I'd now like to swap out my AirPort Extreme base station for a time capsule. As I understand it, I should be able to unplug the base station and replace it with the TC without problem, so long as I use all the same settings on my TC... network name, security protocol, password, etc. Given the complexity of my network, I thought I should check with you first for any advice you might have. I don't want to set up a new network or make any changes to the existing one-- with the exception of using the TC in place of the AE. I'm already using Time Machine for backups. As a refresher, my current setup has the AE as base station and 3 expresses hard-wired with Ethernet connections elsewhere in my home. I have a 4th express set up wirelessly to use with my stereo system at the front of the house. All AXs are 'n's and are set up, as per your instructions, in Bridge mode to extend the existing network. I'm running the most updated version of Mavericks on my MBPro. Any suggestions you might have will be, as always, very much appreciated! Sincerely, Phyllis Sommers

  • How do i sync only music

i'm using my boyfriend's itunes and trying to sync only music and not apps or anything else.  how do i do this?

There is no selective restore from backup so set it up as a new one and then sync your music.

You may have inadvertently synced an app to your phone that was purchased with her ID.  That would trigger a prompt for her ID password when updating.  If that's the case, you would need to delete it from your phone.

  • I have an ipod touch that i first recieved in the united states, now i am currently residing in canada. my question is can i have an itunes account from both countries without wiping out all the songs and apps. on my ipod??

please help, i am wondering if i can have both an itunes account from the usa and canada on the same ipod without wiping out my music and apps.???

You can retain the apps and music for the USA account.  However, you can only use the iTunes store in the country you are physically located.  Thus, you can't update the USA purchased app when in Canada.  See the following too:

If you previously synced to the computer then you may be able to recover use of the iPod without erasing the iPod by following the instructions here:
      Disabled Recovery-must use syncing computer.
Otherwise yo will have to reestore and thus erse the iPOd

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

    To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode.

I have an ipod touch (4th gen) and just bought a clock/charger/player. It says I need ios 4.3. I keep getting a message saying I can download ios 6.? but that it will wipe everything off my ipod.  Is there any way to get the ios without wiping out my files?

There is no supported method to "downgrade" iOS on any device.  If you update, you will get the latest iOS for your device, which will be iOS 6.1.3.  You cannot go backwards to iOS 4.3
If you have never backed up in either iCloud or iTunes, then upgrading to iOS 6.1.3 will involve restoring your device as part of the upgrade.  Without a backup to restore from, you will loose everything that is on it.
You should first connect to iTunes with your computer, sync your device without upgrading and create an up to date backup of everything.  Then use the upgrade option in iTunes to update your iOS.
However, if the dock device strictly requires iOS 4.3, it will not work, as you cannot downgrade iOS.  There simply is no mechanism from Apple to do that.

  • How do I sync only 40 of my 500 photos in iPhoto to my iPhone?

Question: How do I sync only 40 of my 500 photos in iPhoto to my iPhone?
    This is what I did:
1-Created a "New Album" in iPhoto
    2-Named it "iPhone"
3-Dragged in the 40 photos (of the 500 photos in my iPhoto library) into the "New Album" named iPhone
    4-Synced.
Result: Now when I go to the "Photo" widget on my iPhone I see:
"Camera Roll" "iPhoto (40)" and "iPhone (40)"
Why is it showing that I have the same 40 photos in under "iPhoto" and "IPhone"?
Shouldn't it say only "Camera Roll" and iPhone (40)"? Thanks!

You only have 40 photos on the phone, and there are not 40 duplicates.
What you're seeing is not unlike iTunes, where you have Library, and under it, playlists. Think of the album "iPhone" as a playlist, and "iPhoto" as the Library.
If you added another album called "iPhone2" and synched again, you would see "iPhoto", "iPhone", and "iPhone2". "iPhoto" would show all the photos from both "iPhone" and "iPhone2".
    Make sense?

  • I have 1 ipod but  have diffrent acounts. my computer is setup for my ipod 4th gen that i had stolen and i would like to sync all of that music to my older nano. is there a way to do that without wiping out all my old songs that were on my nano?

so i have one ipod and it is a 2005 ipod nano. i have plugged into my computer and i cant get to the music on it. i am trying to burn it onto a disk or even a diffrent folder on my computer so i can just have select songs on my ipod. the reason i have 2 diffrent accounts is because i made a new account for my ipod 4th generation and it got stolen. so now i have my older ipod. is there a way to get it onto my computer with out wiping all my old songs on it?

iPods do not work with "accounts."  They work with your iTunes library.  You don't have to set up a new iTunes library for each iPod.  One iTunes library can sync with as many iPods, iPhones, and iPads as your own, at the same time.  iTunes connects to and treats each device separately.
However, if your iPod nano is set up for automatic syncing with an iTunes library that is NOT your current iTunes library, you cannot sync your current library to it without replacing its existing content.  Do you have access to the previous iTunes library, the one the iPod currently synced to?  If so, you should transfer your song files from that iTunes library to your current iTunes library.  Then, sync our iPod to your current iTunes library.  You can post back to get more info about the procedure.
If you don't have access to that previous iTunes library, the approach is to first offload the song files from the iPod to your computer's drive, then add the song files to your current iTunes library.
You cannot use iTunes to transfer song files from iPod to computer, except for songs purchased from the iTunes Store.  However, there are third-party methods and utilities that can transfer from iPod to computer.  If you do a Google search on something like "ipod transfer," you should get some links.
You can then sync your iPod to your "consolidated" iTunes library.

  • How do i unsync my iphone from itunes library and sync it to a different one without wiping my phone

I bought an iphone 5c and synced it to a windows 7 thinkpad laptop. I backed it up on this device and transferred music off there to my iphone. I recently had an acer aspire e15 laptop and downloaded itunes so i could now do everything i did on my old laptop on to this one, but it isn't letting me unless i sync my phone and wipe its memory. Although i can restore my phone it doesn't restore the music. So is there a way to unsync from one itunes library to another without wiping my data, or is there a way to transfer the music off my phone to my new itunes library so when i restore my phone its easy to restore the music i had on it previously.

The warning message provided is all iTunes content on your iPhone will be erased, not all settings and data. The same applies when selecting to transfer any photos from the new computer. If you had a computer backup for your old computer that included your iTunes library and all photos on your iPhone that were transferred from your computer that could be transferred to your new computer, this wouldn't be a problem.
iTunes includes an option to transfer all iTunes content on your iPhone that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes Store. With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. Or with your iPhone connected, right click on your iPhone under Devices in the iTunes source list and at the menu window that appears, select Transfer Purchases.
There are some 3rd party utilties that provide for transferring photos from an iPhone that were transferred to the iPhone from a computer, but the original resolution of these photos will be lost. When transferring photos from a computer, the photos are optimized for viewing on the iPhone. The same utilities provide for transferring music from an iPhone that was not purchased from the iTunes Store.
Contacts, settings, and photos/videos in the iPhone's Camera Roll are not affected by this.

  • Sync only music to ipad

Can somebody tell me if there is a user friendly way to sync my music with my iPad (from iTunes on a PC) without syncing my apps?
I think I have tried to select and deselect every combination there is, but every combination results in iTunes attempting to sync all of my apps, even deleted ones.  This "will install/install," "will remove/remove" button system does not seem to work the way Apple says it will. I am at my wit's end trying to figure this out and all I wanted to do was free up some storage by removing some music I don't listen to very often.

    Hello joyride68
The easiest way to do this is to go to the iTunes Preferences and go to the Devices tab and check “Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically” so that iTunes does not sync anything. The next thing is to make sure that Manually manage music and videos is check, then you can drag and drop the music you want on there and remove anything that you do not want.

  • I have a iphone 4 with IOS 7.2 and i have a imac g5 and i want to sync my music is it possible?

hi i got a Iphone 4 and it has the newest IOS which is IOS 7.1.2 and i have a imac g5 which is running on os x 10.4.11 and i have itunes 9.1.2 and i want to update my Iphone and sync my music and everything wiht itunes but can i? since its kinda old thanks in advance. C:

No.  iOS7 requires iTunes11 and that requires an Intel Mac which yours is not.
Options if you cannot upgrade: iTunes Store purchases can already be downloaded directly. Use iTunes Match to put non-Store music in iCloud, then download to your device from there. Backup your device directly to iCloud over a wireless connection. Photos can be downloaded from the Camera Roll using iPhoto or Image Capture.  True syncing is not possible.
