Syncing photos from both aperture AND iphoto

Hi,
I'm a user of iPhoto and Aperture. I use both but for different needs. I used to sync my photos to AppleTV from iPhoto. But now, I would also like to sync from Aperture... It seems that iTunes keeps the settings for both software but can only sync from one at a time... Is there a way to sync photos from both sources at the same time on AppleTV ?
Thx !

Hi,
To keep you informed of my findings...
I decided to export photos from Aperture and iPhoto that I want to be displayed in a folder under the Pictures folder. Then, I ask iTunes to sync photos from that folder instead of Aperture or iPhoto... Seems to work fine so far...

  • I updated to Mountain Lion and can't access most of my photo libraries , both Aperture and iPhoto

After updatiing yesterday I cant access my libraries, I get two different messages, one says :"Aperture can't access this Library' "to use this library , make sure its file permissions are set correctly".  The next one says "Unable to write to library iPhoto Library 2
check that you have permissions to write to the library directory.Any ideas what I have to do tho get access again.

I have been having the same issue, although the external drive is not an array. It's a multi-disk setup where the drives are manually duplicated using Super Duper, although it could be set up as an array. The suggestion to remove the external drive(s) from the system, spinning them down, then plugging them in worked ONCE. After that, the next time Aperture was relaunced, the problem resumed. And now spinning them down or taking them out and restarting them, even restarting the Mac, has no effect. I'm testing to see if moving the Libraries to another drive and reformatting the drives in this external enclosure before bringing the libraries back will have an remedy. It may be there needs to be a firmware update to the external enclosure in order to work properly with Mountain Lion.

  • Using both aperture and iphoto

is there a way to use both aperture and iphoto without duplicating all the pictures? can I just point aperture to the iphoto folder with my pictures? i would like to use both, but don't want to have to duplicate all of my pictures, my hard drive can't handle my heavy shutter finger twice over.

Fundamentally our need/pain drives our determination of the best solution.
iPhoto is great as you say for integration cross iLife, basic photo management and basic edits.
Once you start to use Aperture with any volume of photos, it rapidly dawns on you how basic iPhoto is. I have tried both, and used iPhoto from iLife 04 onwards. iPhoto becomes unwieldly when you start throwing 100, 200, 500 or a 1,000 images at it. Compares and selects, sorting on different metadata, all slicker than iPhoto. But when it comes to image adjustments, there really is no comparison. Highlights/Shadows, Levels with quarter points, spot/patch controls ... smoothing, etc. To say nothing of seeing your original and modified(s) side by side. Or how about non-destructive crops so you can create the best possible presentation of the object with the overall image? Organization and navigational structure? Built in backup (Vaults) so that it is easy to back up. Yes, I'm sold on Aperture and that's why I now export just my finished (keepers) results back to iPhoto and not the other way around.
As your volumes grow, and your experience with Aperture grows, I'm sure you will start to reconsider.
    Have fun.

I can't sync photos from my PC and get (-50) error

    Hello evilemma72,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you do not see a checkbox to enable syncing photos, and instead see a message the iCloud Photos is on, then it indicates you have iCloud Photo Library enabled on your iPhone, and the photos already exist on your phone.  To learn more about iCloud Photo Library, take a look at the article below.

  • Sharing Photo's between Aperture and iPhoto and syncing to iPads, etc

    Here is my problem.
I have 5 Macs (1 iMac, 4 laptops.) There are 4 people in my family and we have the family pack of iLife. The iMac is where everything sits with a time capsule and Drobo hanging off of it - about 6 TB's of data. Each Mac sync's with a variety of iPods, iTouchs and iPads. All linked to a user. So for example, all my oldest son's devices sync with only his laptop.
Well, I finally fixed my media (songs, movies, TV shows, etc) problem by leveraging home share in iTunes and authorizing all my Macs. But not so lucky yet for Photo's.
Here is the my photo dilemma.
I like Aperture for the editing and ability to handle large libraries better. So I have Aperture installed on the iMac where everything sits. iPhoto is also installed on the iMac and iPhoto is on all 4 other laptops. Prior to moving to Aperture, sharing photo's between computers was relatively easy using sharing in iPhoto - although it appears sharing in iPhoto is different than home share in iTunes. I converted my iPhoto library on the iMac to Aperture - now sharing is a pain in the neck.
Ideally, a Home Share like feature would be built into Aperture and iPhoto with another feature that would allow you to "check for new photos" on the laptops and pull them into Aperture - but wishful thinking right now.
So my while my 2 new iPads are awesome - they are basically useless for Photo's as they are synced to 2 laptops that use iPhoto, but all my Photos are in Aperture on the iMac.
    Thoughts anyone????
    Thanks

    What was the question?
    Regards
    TD

  • Can you sync photos to an iPad from both Aperture and Pictures Folder?  I know there are options for both but I have photos on both Aperture and Pictures Folder that I want to put on my iPad.

If I select Aperture as the option to sync for photos I can't select photos from the Pictures folder.  Currently I have my photos synced to Aperture but I want to add photos from Pictures Folder.  It doesn't really look like it's possible to add stuff as it would delete my photos from Aperture if I resync with the Pictures Folder.  Really frustrating because I don't want to have to add those photos to my Aperture library as I'm currently moving away from using Aperture to Lightroom.  So all my older photos are in Aperture but most of my newer images are saved in my Pictures Folder.  Thanks for any help with this.
    Darci

    Hi Lawrence,
Thanks for that... I thought of that, of adding my iPad Pix as a subfolder of Pictures and syncing to Pictures but I remember many versions of iTunes' ago that I could add folders. Can I still do that or has that option gone? If the option doesn't exist then I suppose I will have to use folders and subfolders.
The thing is, I have iPad Pix as one folder then another folder of Pictures with various subfolders within it. It's a couple of those different subfolders I want to sync as well as iPad Pix and I don't want the hassle of moving and syncing specific folders etc... it really would be easier if I could sync more than one folder at the same time. Hope it's possible...
    Thanks,
    Maz

  • Syncing Photos from iPhone 5 to iPhoto on Macbook Air

I have synced my photos from my iPhone 5 to my Macbook Air through iPhoto to free up storage.  I do not have a single picture in my camera roll, but on my iPhone in storage settings, it says that Photos and Camera are still taking up 7.2GB of memory (Specifically: Photo Library - 7.2GB, Synced from iTunes Library - 0.7 KB, and Shared Photo Stream - 4.1 KB).  How do I completely delete this photos off of my iPhone to free up storage without erasing them from my iPhoto on my Macbook?

Check Settings > Photos & Camera > iCloud Photo Library (Beta)  = "Off"
You may then need to reset the iPhone.  Hold the on/off and home buttons together for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
iCloud Photo Library is not on your Mac yet.

  • Using both Aperture and iPhoto '09

This might sound unnecessary, but I am sure that people do it. I use Aperture to import, store and manage my master files. However, I would also like to keep images in iPhoto in order to utilize and play around with faces and places.
My question is what is the best way to get images from my managed aperture library into iPhoto? I know that you can open iPhoto creating a new library and then show the Aperture library to import from. My question centers around what are you actually importing? My assumption is that you are importing previews and not master files. Is so, what is the best way to set the preview so that you don't take up too much extra space on the hard drive?
Also, there are some photos in which I would like the master to get imported to iPhoto. I say this because the red eye tool doesn't seem to work all that well in Aperture, but it seemed to work a little better in iPhoto. Again, maybe I am going about this all wrong. My thinking is that unless I edit the master for the red eye, I won't be able to print it out, if I am just editing a preview image. Unless of course, even though it is a preview, when I try to print it will still reference back to the original data minus the red eye.
Any thoughts on the best ways to go about this, or whether it is even necessary? Maybe best to do initial import with iPhoto and then move things to Aperture? I only have a few hundred pictures in my library. Also, my library is backed up to a Time Capsule.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Terrence,
Good stuff. Makes sense about how to run a referenced library, and also about the quality of the preview. I was wondering though, even if I set the preview quality to be 12 and didn't limit the size of the preview, would it still be less info than the original master file? I suppose if I really wanted a master file to print from within iPhoto, I could always just export from Aperture and import into iPhoto. I was just wondering in case I brought all my images into iPhoto as previews and then wanted to print out a photo book from within iPhoto. I just want to make sure that the images are going to be of the best possible quality.
On a side note, without posting a new topic, perhaps you could answer another question for me. I just set Photoshop as the external photo editor in Aperture, because I was having some issues with the red eye feature not working so great in iPhoto. For some reason, Photoshop seems to get the red eye a little bit better on certain photos. Anyway, I noticed that it only gives you two options to save as: TIFF, TIFF 16 bit, PSD and PSD 16 bit. Why can't you save the files as JPEG's, or like the original master file when you use an external image editor? The size of the version edited externally is astronomical compared to the original master.

  • Photo stream in aperture and iphoto are not working for me.

Can anyone help?  I have been getting this message on Iphoto 11 9.2 (626) "iphoto was unable to connect to photo stream" and in Aperture "aperture was unable to connect to photo stream"  everything is working on icloud except this.

Well, after banging my head on this for a few weeks, I looked at my logs.
PhotoStreamAgent was crashing over and over again.
Looked araound a bit, found nothing.
So, I removed all the PhotoStream related files from ~/Library/Prefereces/com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.*
Please do this at your own risk.  It worked fine for me. I looked at the files before running this and saw nothing I couldn't live without.   Figured, worst case I wiped out iCloud settings, and set them up again (which I've already done anyway trying to resovle this).
Open up a terminal (you should probably stop here if you don't know how to do that, but it's in Applications > Utilities)
    cd Library/Preferences
    ls com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.*
The last line will show you the files we're about to delete.  You can stop now if you see something important.
    Lastly:
    rm com.apple.iLifePhotoStream.*
Go turn on Photo Stream in System Preferences and try again in Aperture.  Worked first try for me after nothing else had.

  • Syncing photos from iPad to macbook and vice versa

I recently synced my ipad with my new macbook air. I successfuly imported all my photos from my iPad to iPhoto on my laptop.  However, now everytime I connect my ipad and laptop iPhoto opens and asks me to import all the photos all over again, despite the fact that they are still all there.
I haven't synced my photos with another computer before. I want to be able to add a photo onto my ipad and have it on my laptop and vice versa.
This doesn't have to be done wirelessly, I am happy to only have it happen when I plug them togerther, but I want the same photos on both my laptop and iPad.
I havent really messed around with anything as I am afraid of wiping my photos. I understand that I may have to do this via a third party or something, any help would be great.
    Thanks.

Connect the iPad to your Mac then launch iTunes.
Select the iPad under Devices then select Photos from the menu.
    Deselect:   Sync Photos from
You probably have iPhoto selected from the pop up menu.
Deselecting Sync Photos from should prevent the prompt to sync every time you connect the iPad.

  • Syncing photos from Aperture to Apple TV

I have first generation Apple TV to which I sync music and photos from an iMac using a wireless connection.
Until recently I used iPhoto. Now I have installed Aperture and cannot get this to sync.
The dropdown menu says "Sync photos from:..."
    iPhoto
    Choose folder…
    Pictures
Aperture is nowhere to be seen.
How do I get Aperture to appear in the menu?

Syncing works by copying selected content to the tv HDD, after which you no longer need any connection to itunes to be able to play this content.
Selection is made either manually or automatically in your sync options within itunes depending on which you choose, automatic sync will sync things like the most recent unwatched items for you.
Anything that isn't synced to the tv can be watched through the streaming of content from your itunes library on your mac/pc, so for streaming to work, you need itunes to be running.

  • Trying to sync photos from iTunes (via iPhoto) to ipad and iPhone. The  Photo tab does not show up and no sync occurs

Trying to sync photos from iphoto to ipad and iphone.  Photo tab does not show up in itunes under devices.

    I had a similar problem (https://discussions.apple.com/message/24525903#24525903)
The solution in my case was to start iPhoto and let it update the library, even thu itunes was set up to sync with Aperture.

  • How do I transfer photos from aperture and iPhoto to bridge?

How do I transfer photos from Aperture and iPhoto to Adobe Bridge.  I am using Photoshop CS6.  Many of my original photos were stored as raw files.

Here's how to access Mac iPhoto images for use in Photoshop
and so that they may be viewed by choosing that folder in Bridge..
    1. In the Finder, navigate to Users > [user name} > Pictures > iPhoto Library.
    2. Control-click (Right-click) the iPhoto Library file and choose Show Package Contents.
    3. A Finder window opens that shows the contents. The Masters folder (or called Originals folder) contains all of the photographs that are in iPhoto.
Photoshop cannot access this folder, but if you make a duplicate of the folder, the dupe will be accessible -- so:
    4. Control-click (Right-click) the folder named Masters (or Originals) and choose Duplicate.
5, Drag the duplicate folder which is named "Masters copy" or “Originals copy” from the iPhoto Library Finder window to the Desktop.
    6. Open images in Photoshop from file on desktop or view them in Bridge.
7  Rename the folder and move it elsewhere (probably to the Pictures folder), if desired.
And here is a Forum thread related to Aperture-to-Bridge
