Syncing photos (IPhoto) between two Mac devices

I have an Imac and a MacBook. Many of my photos and movies are stored in iPhoto on both devices. Is there some way to sync both devices so that both have the same photos without duplication?

  • Best solution to sync photo libraries between two macs?

I'm trying to help my father in law who has a new iMac, MacBook Pro, and dot mac/mobile me account. He wants the iPhoto library to be in sync on each machine. If he adds a new photo to one machine, he would like to see it on the other, and have his iPhoto album and preference settings match.
I've tried to accomplish this using iDisk syncing, but it really doesn't seem to work.
Is there a way to smoothly accomplish this via mobile me/dot mac?
If not, what third party application would anyone recommend?
Many thanks for any advice or help!
He's got about 7+GB in photos, and is using iPhoto '08 with two 10.5.4 Macs. I'd like to be able to sync to "the cloud", since he travels with the MacBook.

As Larry pointed out the only way to get two libraries to be the same is use iPLM to either merge the two libraries into one and then copy the merged library to the other Mac or just copy the Events from one library to the other and vice versa.
Trying to use a sync application will only damage both libraries, i.e putting photos in each library that the other's database file doesn't know about and maybe moving one database file to the other library which it's not associated with.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Sync Aperture Library between two Macs

I apologize if this is an obvious question; I've searched this community and can't find an answer.
My wife and I currently have iMacs, and we both have iPhoto, and the problem is that we both tend to import pictures we take into our respective iPhoto libraries, but there's no way to easily sync them so we both have all pictures.
I'm intrigued by Aperture's purported "sync" capabilities. Hopefully, an Aperture expert here can tell me if AP3 has the ability to do what I described above - keep two individual copies of Aperture across two Macs on the same network in sync automatically?

Unfortunately it will be difficult to do this even with Aperture. I'm thinking the the 'sync' capabilities you heard of are Apertures merge library command.
Merging libraries is meant to facilitate what happens when a single user takes all or a part of their library out into the field and then wishes to merge the changes made when they return. So for instance I take a part of my library make changes to it, add new things to it and then merge it back into the original library. When I do the merge I have to tell Aperture which library to use to resolve conflicts. That is one of the libraries has to be made the master.
In a situation like you are describing where two independent users make changes to their respective libraries and then try to merge them which library is designated the master? If you make changes to image A in your library and leave image B alone but your wife does the opposite what should the merged library look like? As Aperture is now one or the other would have to rule.
If its just a question of images you each add independent of the other to your respective libraries you could work something out along the lines of exporting the new project from one library and importing into the other but trying to sync changes between two independent users would be difficult.

  • Sync a program between two macs

I would like to have my accountant post transactions on her mac within the Quick Books program, then be able to sync the program with my mac at home and visa versa. Is that possible to do? The only thing that I could think of is saving the data file to my .mac account then each of us would have to download and update the data file every time we use the program. Is there something more realtime or dynamic than this?
Thanks in advance for any help.

when you say the size is now smaller do you mean you have copied the Iphoto Library file over from the TM . Are you any pictures missing does you keywords work ok. The Iphoto file is a package it does not show all files on the screen remember right click on the file on TM and select show package contents are the same amount of folders etc the same as in your Iphoto Library file on the Mac Hd .

  • How can I sync important folders between two Macs?

I've had a Macbook Pro for about a year and a half and love it so much that this Christmas I decided to buy myself a second Mac. I got a refurbished 24 inch iMac and just set it up last night. During the setup it occurred to me that there are certain folders on both computers (documents, pictures, audio, downloads, etc) that I would like to have available and synchronized between both computers. I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd like to do this. Does this functionality exist in Snow Leopard? If not, are there any 3rd party apps that will solve my problem?
    Thank you for reading.

no. not unless you want to use a command line tool like rsync.

you can use Chronosync or ForkLift. also, you can sync not directly between computers but via a cloud. there are many services that do that. there is apple's own mobileme. another very popular one is DropBox.

  • Syncing Email messages between two mac

Can I get my email to sync between my imac and macbook?
For instance, if i delete an email on one mac, i want it deleted on the other as well.
or if i move an email to a different mailbox on one mac, i want it moved on the other mac as well.
    Thanks
    Chris

Nerowolfe, Thanks for helping...I do not have it set to remove the messages from the server.
I actually want the all the emails to come to all the computers, i just also want each computer to recognize if i have already taken some kind of action with an email. like if I have deleted it, i would like for the other computers to go ahead and move it to the trash folder. Or if I have moved it to a different mailbox, i would like the other computers to also go ahead and move it to the different mailbox.
As another example, I have a mailbox (not smartbox, just regular) called 'Saved Mail' When I get an important email that I want to save I drag it into the Saved Mail box. I would like my other computer to also move it to 'Saved Mail'
Maybe I am asking too much.....???

  • Sharing photos from two iPhones and one photo library between two macs

Does anyone have a best practice about how to share one photo library within a family?
My wife and I each have iPhones (a 5s and a 6).  She has an MacBook Pro.  I have a MacBook Air.  We would each like to have access to any picture taken on either of our phones on either computer.  Is that possible?  Does it require duplicating photo libraries on each computer?
We also have a DSLR.  We would like to import picture from that camera into the same photo library.
I purchased an external hard drive which I have attached to my time capsule.  I have created another photo library on that and I know how to select a specific library when opening iPhoto.  But then I don't have access to photos when I travel, unless there is some way for me to access the external drive remotely.
Thanks for any help you can provide on some/all these fronts!

The way to do it is to have one Library on an external disk formatted Mac OS X Extended, Journaled. But that disk must be directly connected to the computer,  not by wireless.
Note that the upcoming Photos.app - due in 2015 and designed to replace iPhoto and Aperture - may offer other possibilities.

  • Sync iTunes-library between two Macs

Today I´ve got my library on my Mini-mediacenter, which is very convenient as this is connected to my speakers in the livingroom. Also I have my MBP and my iPod. What I´m looking for is a soloution to always have the same library on these two machines. The two machines is connected in my home network, and I am today using HomeSharing, but that seems to only sync item bought in iTMS, not items added by myself.
Is there a soloution to this problem?

  • Sync iphone between two macs

How do I sync my iphone between two macs. An imac at home and a macbook pro. I want them to work equally if possible
    thanks

I want to be able to sync my iphone to both the imac and the macbook pro. Everything equally. Apps, music, photos etc.
When I updated to ios, using the macbook pro, it wiped everything out. I had to go to my imac and do a restore from a previous version to get things back. I want both macs to be equal when I synch with them.
    Can I do this?

Thanks. You said: "When you setup iCloud the On my Mac contacts should've been moved to iCloud I think (can't remember what happened in my case)."
Actually that does not happen, or at least it didn't happen to me.

  • Synching iPhoto on two Macs

I've read some older discussions on synching iPhoto between two Macs but is there anything new on this. I'd like to have the same library on both Macs.

Brie Fly is right. You can't do a straight sync. Doing so will make sure each folder in each library has the same files but it can't sync the database files that tell iPhoto which photos are where. Each library will just appear the same and may eventually have problems with all those "unofficial" files in it's library. You can use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to merge photos from each library into the other. It would not be automatic in that you'd have to know which are new. You might use the "Last X rolls" feature to do that. But it will copy them and maintain the rolls, album, keyword and other metadata information. I've not used it but many users have reported successful merges with it.

  • Can I sync iphoto library between two Mac's?

I have two Macs (an iMac and a Macbook Pro) and want to sync the iPhoto (6.0.6) library between the two so whenever I change one the other is updated. I thought about using iDisk but my library is apx 5gb. I am new to Macs- is there a utility built into OSX 10.4.9 or hopefully some freeware or very-cheap ware... preferably automated. Thank you very much.

    brettjbyers
No you cannot sync an iPhoto library between two macs. If you do you will corrupt the iPhoto Library file. iPhoto is a consumer level app, and this feature is not supported.
What you can do is share the photos but not the library. Each machine will need to have it's own library file.
The easiest way to do it this is to enable sharing (in the iPhoto Preferences) on both machines (one sharing the library, the other looking for the share). When you do this the shared library will appear in the Source (or left-hand) pane and pics can be dragged from that to the library in the other machine.

  • Can Lion server keep my photos in sync between two macs?

can Lion server keep my photos in sync between two macs?  Where should I keep them, we have Aperture 3 and my wife still likes iphoto '11.  I've already tried plenty of 3rd party solutions with little success.  I simply want my MBP to "mirror" the imac with the exception of iMovie footage.  Is this what the server app can do?  I am bad enough with computers, but even thinking about a server gives me migraines!

  • Sync folders between two Macs

    Howdy,
I want Mail on two of my Macs to be in sync. I have a lot of rules set up and once the rules are applied the mail is sorted in local folders so it disappears from the inbox. This of course causes it to no longer be available on the other Mac.
Looking for an application that can sync files I select between two Macs whenever a change is detected on either of them, in this case my Mail folder and peferences. This can go directly or through an OS X server that's running 24/7. I don't want to move my folders to the mailserver but keep them local.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.
